The First American Prime Minister, Busted

Way to keep that campaign on message, Mr. Ignatieff!

The Liberal Party won’t stop using an ad that wrongly attributes a quote to Stephen Harper […]
The ad cites an Aug. 26, 2010 Globe and Mail piece for the first statement, and runs it with a headline that says “It’s Past Time the Feds Scrapped the Canada Health Act.”
But while that line did indeed appear in the Globe and Mail last year, it was in a column by writer André Picard. Picard was citing Harper from a 1997 statement he made as vice-president of the NCC.
A Google search makes it clear the line is oft-cited but never with a link to a recording or speech text. It’s usually sourced to a famous speech Harper made in Montreal to a conservative American group called the Council for National Policy (where he calls Canada a northern European welfare state).
Now it appears Harper didn’t use the line at all.

“Globe has corrected” original Aug. 26, 2010 column and is pursuing Liberal response.”
I knew that the appearance of Paul Martin over the weekend was foreshadowing.

  1. Editor’s note: In a column published on Aug. 25, 2010, Stephen Harper was quoted as having said the following when he was vice-president of the National Citizens Coalition: “It’s past time the feds scrapped the Canada Health Act.”
In fact, that statement was written by David Somerville, president of the NCC, in the June 1997 edition of The Bulldog.
The Globe apologizes for the error.

    Whoops.

  2. Not only does Harper have to run against the Lib/NDP/Bloc Separatist Coalition. He has to run against a corrupt Elections Canada, which allows Non Citizens to vote, all of MSM. The CBC The CTV, and most Newspapers. But also 3 former Prime Ministers. If the Liberals could get enough embalming fluid into Pierre Trudeau, he would be running as well. It’s like Harper is running against the whole last 50 years of the Liberal Zombie Elite. Trudeau, the Father of Quebec Separatism, Chretien “Da Little Teef”, Martin The Madoff of the Liberal Party. But also Brian Mulroney now coming out for Lizzard May of the Green Communists. Talk about a stacked deck…

  3. Oh Dear liberal media caught lying again I see, don’t expect the libs to correct their lying ways.

  4. Sun News Network can’t air soon enough.
Currently listening to Michael Harris and Eric Margolis on CFRA drinking each other’s bath water over how Sun News marks the end of the world as we know it.
Watching the MSM implode over the next few weeks is going to be exquisite. 🙂

  5. When are they going to bring back the ad about Canada getting an aircraft carrier?
By the way, for Bell Satellite viwers, Sun TV will be on Channel 213. At least in my neck of the woods in southern Ontario. I stopped watching CTV News and CBC News a long time ago. I welcome the Sun, despite global warming.

  6. I first became aware of the lying MSM when the star foenix published that photo cropped to exclude the flat tire, lest someone would make an metaphor out of this situation aka Robert Stanfield. I cancelled my subscription that day and became a card caring member of the club…. If you believe everything you read then maybe you shouldn’t read.
Thanks SDA for showing me the light!!!

  7. the liberals are famous for using misquotes or decietfull propoganda during elections in order to strike up fear among the electorate, Remember the Tanks in Streets & hidden adgendas?
those are just from this decade.
the liberals are desperate this time & with jack layton now breathing down there throats it will intesify.

  8. Take a read of some of Norman Spector’s/kady’s tweets on this..It is just shameful and embarrassing the depths Kady is sinking to ass-cover for cbc/Libs.

  9. another journalist too many:
dgardner: Politicos debating “accuracy” is like Cheech and Chong arguing who’s the stoner.
(senior writer and columnist with the Ottawa Citizen)

  10. The fact that the Liberals did not revise the ad and admit the mistake is a pretty clear sign of just what dire straits their campaign is in, despite the MSM’s best efforts to run interference on their behalf. They’re now going to wear this mess for the rest of the campaign.
That aside, things must be going quite badly if they had to drag Paul Martin and Chretien out of retirement.
We may well see the NDP as the official opposition when the dust settles.

  11. yet another journalist too many:
ndmorrison: @dgardner isn’t it even worse than that? It’s like Chong getting all uppity about Cheech’s lifestyle
    (Network producer for CBC Radio)

  12. Fifth wheels were never meant to roll…rather tow.
Libs have never towed anything heavier than personal baggage.
Baggage is a piss poor platform.

  13. someone is ready for administrative leave:
nspector4: @ndmorrison in my academic/journo book, quotations are in a class by themselves
ndmorrison: @nspector4 yes, the question was, what’s the substantial difference? What line have the Libs crossed that the Cons have not?
nspector4: @ndmorrison i was surprised that you, a journo, asked the question.
ndmorrison: @nspector4 are the Liberals journalists? Is the diff btwn the Con ipod tax and the Lib healthscare the use of quotes in the latter?
nspector4: @ndmorrison quotation marks mean something in journalism. No?
ndmorrison: @nspector4 in terms of fairness and accuracy, how is this substantially diff’t from the Con claim of Liberals plans for a $75 ipod tax?

  14. You guys are just preaching to the choir. A small ripple will occur in the MSM, if they even correct it.
This election isn’t over by a long shot, because the Cons are not getting their message out via the MSM. All this “little stuff” is just smoke and mirrors to deflect from the big stuff. SUN NEWS TV will be more preaching to the choir and probably won’t be enough to swing the deal.
If the Cons can’t bring themselves to beat the liberals to death over page 46 of the Red Book (Cap and Trade) and the damage that policy will do to not only Ontario’s economy, where they need the votes, they will lose this election over the usual stuff: abortion, gays, health care whatever the Libs can dredge up and repeat ad nauseum in the MSM. They’ll die the death from a thousand cuts.
Ontario, this election is your’s to lose. The ROC have made their minds up years ago. Let’s see 100 Conservative seats this time ’round.

  15. Helena Guergis was just on with Michael Harris, she said about 3 words after getting on the air — in her best baby girl voice — and her phone died. It was pretty comical.
Harris seems to be a real Harper hater.
Oh, now she is back on.

  16. Everything should come to a screaching halt – now. The PM MUST call them on this and demand an immediate retraction and an apology.
The Cons need to make this a serious issue and broadcast it loud and clear.
I know they’ve run a smooth cautious campaign but the gloves need to come off on this as left unchallenged it could be very damaging. Sue? – yes, but that won’t help in the here and now.
If ever there was a time to go off script now is the time.

  17. No look this election is about the ground game. Look at the polls. They have not moved. This is of course not what the CPC war room planned but it’s not a disaster either. What needs to happen is we need 40% who said they would vote CPC to show up and vote that is all. If you’re a Liberal and the libs are sitting at 25-30% in the polls and your looking at Iggy are you getting off the couch to go vote? Hell no. That’s the strategy right there and it will work.

  18. There are 16% of voters sitting on the fence. Who have not yet decided how to vote. That’s the PRIZE.

  19. That picture of Martin is one of my favourites. The msm only showed the wagon box, not the flat tire…just like their videos of Martin only from the waist up so that his oddly pigeon-toed gait would not be apparent.

  20. Roger Smith from ctv is doing MAJOR ass-cover on the Iggy tour..making all kinds of excuses, for the Libs.At one point he was blaming PMSH /RCMP for ‘holding up the Iggy Rise-Up-a-palooza tour, then he had to do a retraction cuz darn it,it wasn’t that evil Harper..it was a car accident and RCMP were blocking traffic for the ambulance.Awwww, poor Roger.
Meanwhile,Fife was mocking PMSH for planning to do a sno-mo ride later today in Ont..he and Dan Matheson laughing about possibility PMSH would ‘fall off’ and ctv would be there to ‘catch it all’..can you even believe the stupidity of these clowns?

  21. “Sun News Network can’t air soon enough.”
Just getting our satellite dish installed as we speak. As my son would say, “Sweet!” 🙂

  22. Icky was just on CPAC, in Yellowknife – said he would not apologize for lies about what PMSH said in the liberanos new midicare ad – glob and flail and McLean’s lied first, he says, and he was just copying those honorable publications. He says the CPC owe him an apology (but was not specific about the CPC lies – maybe because the CPC ads quote Icky word for word), he says he will withdraw the slanderous Medicare ad if PMSH will withdraw all the Icky ads.
This creep must have been one nightmare of a prof. ‘Liberal lie if you must, liberal lie is not necessarily a lie!” Pity any real student in his class!

  23. A moment to remember when the Liberal ‘wheels fell off the wagon’.
The WINTER ELECTION BATTLE of 2005/2006 all caused by yours truly.
So far the family has left the battlefield in the vertical position every time, even though it may be unpleasant. And yes we can still shoot straight!
But then as a family, we have had much experience with corrupt and stupid governments…

Subject: Election Timing – Jack Layton
Thank you for contacting me with your comments about the timing of the
    next Federal election.
After careful and serious consideration, the federal NDP has proposed a
solution that we believe makes the most sense. The NDP will introduce a
motion on November 24th, our next opposition day. That motion will call
for an election to be called in early January for an election in
mid-February. Please find attached my full statement regarding our
    motion.
    The NDP’s common-sense motion will:
    – place the start of an election campaign -after- the holidays, likely
    early January for a mid-February vote;
    – give Canadians ample opportunity to read Justice Gomery’s second
    report -before- the next election;
    – enable the upcoming First Ministers Meeting on Aboriginal Issues to
    proceed outside of an election campaign;
    – allow for the passage of legislation presently on the order paper;
    – provide an opportunity to judge the scandal and culture of entitlement
    sooner rather than later
After Justice Gomery’s indictment of the Liberal Party, this government
doesn’t deserve to set the time of when it will be judged. It has not
earned the right to court voters again with their own tax dollars – this
isn’t an unaccountable majority and compromise is required on all sides.
And, we firmly believe our motion best allows our country to move
forward. In fact, Paul Martin could end the turmoil today simply by
    calling for a February election.
Again, thank you for registering your views with me. All the best.
    Sincerely,
    Jack Layton, MP (Toronto-Danforth)
    Leader, Canada’s New Democrats

  24. No Sun TV in the Northwestel cable areas. Northerners pay twice as much for one quarter the value – makes sense if the customer can’t think! NWT has a monopoly on N. cable/telephone/internet. This is the final straw for us though, we are buying a dish.
The NWT is in the tank for the Liberanos/Dippers/Blocheads – it is a known fact up here. The north will continue to wander the frozen tundra in the dark. Makes me think of Siberia in the good old gulag days.
Is their a live streaming Sun TV site on the internet? It would certainly help smooth the frayed nerves of those of us relying on Ceebeecee/seetv/CPAC for our election news.

  25. I caught the tail-end of a Grit ad yesterday that was implying that the Conservatives would be spending billions on bomber aircraft to kill innocent civilians by dropping bombs!!!111!!!
Shades of “Troops. On our streets. With guns.”

  26. RFB at April 18, 2011 1:44 PM
“It’s like Harper is running against the whole last 50 years of the Liberal Zombie Elite.”
That is one of the best lines I have ever read on a blog.

  27. @Jema 54
    No, unfortunately.

    From David Akin on Twitter:
To all who have asked: Sun News Network is not streaming its programming at this time. You’ll have to find a buddy with a TV!

  28. BTW @kady on twitter is getting beaten up pretty badly by her Liberal allies. I stopped following her after the second day of the campaign but funny stuff worth checking out.

  29. And thanks for the Channel 213 on Bell Fibe TV information, Ghost of Ed. I just checked it out and the channel is up and running the countdown clock and was even already added to my Favourites list without me having to do it manually.

  30. iggys theme song last week was (rise up,rise up)
this week its Slip sliding away, slip sliding away

  31. The Liberals are saying they won’t pull the ad containing a *false* attribution of the quote. That says it ALL.
Ignatieff is truly dishonest and capable of anything to get where he wants to go.
    UNREAL.

  32. “If the Cons can’t bring themselves to beat the liberals to death over page 46 of the Red Book (Cap and Trade) and the damage that policy will do to not only Ontario’s economy, where they need the votes, they will lose this election over the usual stuff: abortion, gays, health care whatever the Libs can dredge up and repeat ad nauseum in the MSM.”
Ignatieff’s plan for Cap and Trade, as he delineated in 2009, and his view that our military should take instruction from the U.N. clinch it for me. Harper should be emphasizing these two issues.
Another thing….I don’t buy the line put out yesterday by some news outlets that Canadians say health care is the number one issue. In my area, it’s jobs and thus the overall economy.

  33. @chutzy:
Layton is eating the Liberals lunch from the left
Harper is eating the Liberals lunch from the right
This is the classic pincer movement with an electoral twist.
The reason they have Paul Martin and Jean Chretien stomping the husting for Iggy is that the LIEberal house is burning down.
    Cheers

  34. “won’t pull the ad containing a *false* attribution of the quote.”
Dan Rather defended the fake TANG memos by saying that they illustrated something he wanted to be true. The Libs are using the same rationale.

  35. Chutzpah, Brother you have that right about the Liberal Cap&Tax on page 56. If the Libs can guzzle enough Viagra laced drinks, so Count Iggy an get the stroke he needs. KY Jelly will be the hottest retail sales craze in Eastern Canada. It will be the Ballad of Sam Magee all over again. “There on the floor with his a*sh*** tore lay Dangerous Sam Magee”. Sam Magee being everyone in Eastern Canada that buys gasoline or diesel or heating oil. These Stooges still haven’t figured out that when the Gubmint slaps on a tax, that it does nothing to the Oil Co., they just pass it down the food chain to the consumer. With the Lib/NDP/Bloc Separatist Coalition say hello to $2-3 Bucks per Litre gasoline.

  36. Know what would be PRICELESS. If some computer genius here, could take that picture of Paul Madoff, and have Chretien Da Little Teef, Count Ignatieff, and the embalmed corpse of Trudeau aka LENIN all on that wagon with the flat tire. With CBC and CTV banners on it along with CPAC. And the Toronto Red Star and the Gob&Pail all cheering them on. 50 Years of Liberal Zombies all in one election.

  37. Liberals makin’ sh*t up on the fly. But hey; we’ll give you the chance to make some more sh*t up. Just vote for the best sh*t we made up…and we’ll put it in an ad.
    Harper: “HERE FOR CANADA”
    Layton: “STRONG EFFECTIVE LEADERSHIP”
Iggy: “Whatevah you say, is whatevah it is!”

  38. The only adult leader in this campaign is Stephen Harper.
The coalition twits, Jack,Gilles and Ignatieff are acting like, well, twits. Having adult conversations with that lot would be impossible and they’re hoping to seize power if the people don’t give Stephen Harper a majority.
What a fine mess we’d be in with the Seppies all riled up in Quebec if the Bloc got to be Official Opposition.

  39. Those who think that health care should be the #1 issue must not understand that you cannot increase health care spending without a strong economy.
Somebody has to pay for it and all the other stuff. That’s just the way it is.
And I have absolutely no problem with a combination public/private partnerships in the delivery of health care services. It is part of the solution.

  40. Hans Rupprecht, very true, but what has me worried is the spectre of the coalition, being justified and legitimized now by our duplicitous Canadian leftist media.

  41. I read some of the comments by the leftards at the Gob and Spew, sweet mother of gawd they are in full panic mode. The stench of desperation from the media and the leftards is gagging and over whelming.
