I dont disagree with Mr. Ignatieff on this point – to a point.
Depending on the issue at hand I am either a Newfoundlander first, albertan first, or Canadian first. If either of the first two is getting screwed by the last one then I am that otherwise I am the latter first (if you follow my logic). If the screwing/abuse is bad enough I would drop my canadian allegiance altogether and fight for the end of the current confederation.
I’m pretty sure almost everyone reading this would have a similar position vis a vis their province of residence/ home province and Canada.
However I think that mr. Ignatieff may have meant more than that – that it is okay for quebecers to consider confederation with Canada to be a union of equals – iow Quebec = canada.
And If he does – either because his believes that that is no big deal or he’s naive about the issue – then he is unfit for the office of prime minister.
(judging by the prior act of signing the separatist coalition document in ’08 that had in it’s pre-amble – “…Canadians AND Quebecers…”. I think that his comments indeed mean more than I and suspect those reading this are prepared to accept.)

Official multiculturalism is a disaster and it’s the Liberals that have made it a disaster by turning it into a “victims” issue.
Back in the good old days multiculturalism was a constructive celebration of Canada’s diversity — the different foods, dresses, music, literary and artistic contributions from Canadians with ancestry from around the world. It was educational and it was fun. After all, what Canadian does not dream of saving enough money to some day take a cruise or travel the world to experience other cultures or learn a foreign language? Experiencing one’s culture all one’s life becomes a total bore for many of us — including those of us who are in Canada from very different cultures! I’ll bet you can find plenty of people from more “exotic” places who are completely tired of their own cultures and want to learn about North America and the West for a change. But what used to unite us all is the fact that if we are Canadian, Canada came first.
But the Liberals have fallen into the Marxist victimization trap — multiculturalism for them today is all about how to get everybody fighting, in order to displace a unifying Canadian National identity with a class conflict system dictated by ruling elites appropriating the role of “victim” cultures (and ironically these ruling elites are usually White anglo/Western-Canadians). The Marxist process in fact destroys cultural diversity — it is absolute cultural homogeneity and official SAMENESS, either within the cultures or more broadly, defined by and enforced by the State. “Sameness” is simply not the same as equality nor diversity under a free democracy.

So why is he proposing the government take on the responsibility that belongs to the family?

I doubt 99.9% of Canadians have an issue with people self identifying with their ancestral roots. The problem lies with the one way street of “multiculturalism”.
Every culture in the world is encouraged to maintain its traditions and roots, regardless of how backwards or barbaric their practices may be. Except any so called European, North American “white” cultures. You cannot even say Christian culture because any non white Christian culture from abroad is accepted readily, to begin with at least.
The suicidal part of it is the unchecked importation of all the worlds’ personal vendettas, fetishes, intolerances and social practices that are not morally compatible with western values. Therefore the conclusion can only mean that multiculturalism is designed to destroy all white culture and supplant the indigenous homelands of “white people” eventually with anyone else available. Regardless of the problems they may bring.

When so called “white people” are marginalized to the fringes of world affairs, it’s the world that will lose out. Many intelligent non white people also see and fear this. Example – When Toronto is half Sunni and the other half Shia, people will be sorry. When the West Coast is divided by Chinese and Sub Continent Indian interests, people will be sorry. When the failing American economy brings in millions of Latin American illegal immigration and crime, people will be sorry.

Exactly Walter — in the Libs’ new TV ad they refer to the Liberal Party as “Your Family”. And in Iggy’s new “family” platform the programs he proposes actually diminish the role of the family and hand over the responsiblity of raising your children to the State. It’s a policy that’s also being pursued Provincially by the Libs as well, especially in the education system. Parents are saying “no” to it, yet the Libs keep pursuing ways to bring it in through the back door against the will of parents — e.g. activists pushing it are saying “we simply need to ‘educate’ parents first so they will accept the sex ed changes”, etc.
We don’t need to be deceptively “re-educated” to Lib/Left ideology about the family. “No” means “no” and parents know what’s best for their children — not the State.

Davenport, what is wrong with simply being a Canadian? No one said people can not take pride in their heritage or even delight in the aspects of another culture. But national identity unites. We are either unified or not. There is no togetherness in a country deliberately divided on ethnic or cultural lines, especially when these lines are largely superficial and are used to a certain party’s political ends.
I would like to apologize to you all in advance for the fact that this Halifax riding I live in is going to reelect the NDP. I’ll vote but it won’t make any difference. You all deserve better and I wouldn’t blame you if you seceded.
BTW – that CBC poll that tells everyone they’re a Liberal? They’re encouraging tutors to give it to all the “students” at the local library’s adult learner program (my friend volunteers there). These people are almost all retarded, borderline-retarded, of very low intelligence or brain-damaged; i.e. not people who would normally vote or who should be encouraged to vote under any circumstances.

I am not a political strategist but I think the following course of action would be prudent but expensive.
Book a series of times on CTV, CBC etc at important times. Have a number of political videos/commercials which ALL deal with the vision of the future, the economic progress that the conservatives have carefully fostered etc.
In short …here is what we have done….here is where we are headed.
I would also have a number of them with Mr. Harper talking about the same thing in order to personalize the positive messages and vision for the future and linking those messages to the person.
At the same time, I would have a team on standby 24-7 ready to produce videos that refute “the bomb” that might happen. These videos to replace some/all of the ones mentioned above if needed.
Any reaction to this?
Surely someone can find a photo of Ignatieff standing in front of a throng of Celtic dancers, South African singers, Sikh, South American, Ukrainian or any number of other “ethnic” groups in “customary” garb……..while the effort is probably not worth the result, it would expose the hypocrisy of his criticism of the poor Conservative campaign volunteer who requested by email that the multicultural heritage of Canada be visible at a campaign rally…..

Some of the journalists are now calling Harper ‘teflon, because Canadians are able to see through the ‘scandals’ that have been found to be set-ups, for eg., Awish Aslam, NDP supporter portraying herself to be something she clearly was not. The media emphasizes gaffes by Conservatives and downplays gaffes by Ignatieff and his team. People see this lack of integrity in the way news is reported and are fed up with it.
