That has to be one of the stupidest articles ever. Let’s think about the differences between someone who wants to run our country, and someone who writes music. Would you think that you should have a grasp on the nuances of Canada before attempting to run it? In a country as complex geographically, politically and ideologically as Canada is – well – I sure want someone who knows the subtleties of the farce of equalization payments, or Alberta’s dirty oil, or the challenges faced by Ontario’s mining sector or the east coast fisheries as they have evolved over the years.
As opposed to someone who thinks of an emotion, puts it to music and writes it down. Or someone who plays hockey. Easygoing internationalism indeed.

It’s not that living elsewhere makes you a worse Canadian, it’s that it’s not the sort of background that makes you an ideal choice to be Prime Minister of a country, and consequently, I think is fair game for criticism.
And as far as what he calls “Canadian Parochialism” goes, All I can say to that is “HELL YES”. I’m all in on that!

Objectively, I am more than aware of sympathies I harbour for the American and French military, that I lack for the Canadian military….but that is the result of being in the ranks one those and not them.
I recall my own father’s attitudes and loyalties….he was in his 70’s before he had the abrupt epiphany that he was Canadian not British….the result of a too long delayed return to the land of his youth. When he boarded the jet for England, he was going home….when he returned he WAS home.
I understand it is not unreasonable for the French or Americans to have reservations about my loyalties…….as well as the Canadians…….

Emotions are funny things. I recall the irony of the scuttlebutt at the start of Gulf I. The, more or less obsolescent, Canadian Navy arrived but having guns had no difficulty making Iraqui merchantmen stop for inspection while, state of the art, USN units had no choice other than utterly destroy with an anti-ship missile. I also recall the humour when Brit Royal Marine boarding parties shocked the USN by being armed with cutlass….something us “second-hand lions” thought appropriate.
That said it is difficult to assess whether MI would be more Canadian if he had spent his career as a cloistered academic at U of T or U of O.

In the US, the MSM throws around the the racism charge in response to Obama opponents. In Canada, our media cheerleaders prefer to ramble on about being unCanadian and ignorant. In both countries the aim is the same – to protect their candidate from criticism and inconvenient questions.
What I object to is journalists arbitrarily dictating the boundaries of debate. There is no reason why discussions about a coalition or Ignatieff’s long absence should be off-limits.
For instance, a government combining a center-left, hard left and the separatist left is a big deal. Would Nfld. get its loan guarantee for Lower Churchill? Would government meddle in oilsands development? What about a carbon tax and/or Montreal carbon exchange market? By excluding speculation on a coalition of losing parties, the media precludes any uncomfortable discussions about areas of policy overlap between the three parties on the left, leaving voters with unanswered questions.
The most frustrating part is not that progressive and liberal journalists are attempting to circumvent these discussions, it is that journalists I really like so willingly comply to these demands.

You make a good point except that unlike Misters Young and Howe, who come back to collect second rate rewards (if you recall Gordon Lightfoot’s cool response to getting a another Juno Award). Mr. Ignatieff, however, is not returning merely to accept laurels but is running for Prime Minister. A second rate prize, perhaps, but they won’t let him be president of ‘his” USA.
I don’t care for the ads much myself but the constant media attacks and vilification of Mr. Harper and all things conservative is even worse. This isn’t even tit for tat, all things considered.

One small detail he seems to have missed(or ignored), Neil Young and Gordie Howe are US citizens. Living abroad is one thing, relinquishing your citizenship is a bit more permanent. I’m not sure if dual citizenship still exists, but I doubt that anyone who stays in the US after his career is over has much interest in retaining his Canadian identity.
The Conservatives are just returning the favours of previous campaigns where libs played the ‘hate the U.S.’ card. Kanadians all know how evil the Americans are…. Count Iggula is just gettin’

The trick for the Conservatives in this election is to keep its base interested despite the leftward drift in budget and policies while broadening support from moderate liberals, Bloquist’s etc. Keeping Lizzy strong helps split the potential coalition side of the ledger. This could very well turn out to be another groundhog day minority CPC election.
As R.Ed Neck says, the column is a very good example of the specious reasoning used by some of the MSM to make the facts fit their perceptions.
There IS a big difference between an entertainer and a politician who wants to run the Country he’s not lived in for thirty years. If Fulford can’t see that,there isn’t much sense trying to discuss it with him.
Michael Ignatieff,has made it quite clear in his many utterances over the last 35 years,that he has absolutely NO connection with ordinary Canadians or the Canadian experience, we are as foreign to him as the citizens of Iceland.
Unlike entertainers,who only seek our favour in buying their product, Ignatieff is asking us to trust him to run the whole show,and we have to ask,”why should we?”
Like the many dual citizens who accept our generosity and leave to make more money elsewhere the minute they get that precious Canadian passport, Ignatieff looks more a citizen of convenience than a true Canadian.

But, not this time.
There’s a difference between Mordecai Richler, Wayne Gretzky, Gordie Howe, Mavis Gallant, and Neil Young: They have never run for political office or aspired to become Canada’s prime minister.
If they had, after living and working outside Canada as long as they did/have, it would be presumptuous of them to return to Canada and expect to run the country. Add to this presumption the fact that Michael Ignatieff was parachuted into “his” riding (which was well-represented by two Ukrainian men who were vying to be the Liberal candidate in a riding in which they had lived all their lives) and the Conservative ads can hardly be called unfair, narrow-minded, or ignorant.
Fulford’s off on this one. Maybe he parties with the Ignatieffs. Who knows?
In terms of policy only, Iggy would not be as foreign to Canada as Obama is to the US. If the left were not fractured into three and a half parties, he could fit comfortably amongst them. The US Democratic Party encompasses the equivalent of all three and half and only captures at most, 50% of the electorate. If Harper gets a majority, it will likely be due to a split left rather than majority popular vote.
We’re not worthy of Iggy.

In terms of policy only, Iggy would not be as foreign to Canada as Obama is to the US. If the left were not fractured into three and a half parties, he could fit comfortably amongst them. The US Democratic Party encompasses the equivalent of all three and half and only captures at most, 50% of the electorate. If Harper gets a majority, it will likely be due to a split left rather than majority popular vote.

It’s the *whole* package, not just his years spent in the USA and the UK. One journalist (Globe and Mail?) states that we can’t judge Ignatieff on ‘character’ because he’s just such an ‘extraordinary’ man. (As though Harper has accomplished nothing!) Now those who question Ignatieff’s credentials, loyalty and concern for issues we expect him to take seriously are ‘parochial,’ narrow-minded and an embarrassment. The comparison of political party leaders to show biz and sports celebrities belies the importance of the role of Prime Minister.

I wonder what the media would be saying during an election campaign if Stephen Harper had lived out of the country (especially those evil United States) for over 30 years.
