“… in the early days like with the clinging-to-guns stuff,” said O’Keefe, referring to an incident at a San Francisco fundraiser in which candidate Obama said small-town Americans “cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren’t like them.”
O’Keefe said he also expected the ruse would be unmasked when Obama said that “under my plan of a cap-and-trade system, electricity rates would necessarily skyrocket,” and again when Obama claimed, “I’ve now been in 57 (U.S.) states,” with “one left to go.”
“We modeled the 57-states gaffe on Dan Quayle’s ‘potatoe’ mistake,” said O’Keefe, referring to a 1992 incident at a Trenton, N.J., elementary school in which then-Vice President Dan Quayle added an “e” to “potato.” “We figured Obama would become a national laughingstock like Quayle, (but we) underestimated the tendency of the press and the public to forgive mistakes by people they like.”

Hah! I knew it. For me, the realization came when, on top of everything else, Biden got the nod for VP.
As far as satire goes, this is pretty weak sauce. Conservatives really should leave comedy to the pros.
‘corpseman’….is so VERY telling..
but my favourite was of course the very idea that this poseur…this egocentric jumped up long legged macdaddy did not know how many states there are in the Union.
always reminded me of angela lansbury using heinz 57 catsup as an aide-memoire in the ‘manchurian candidate’……perhaps one of his advisors was a half literate Richard Condon fan ?
and if the haughty twit is an illiterate with facts and history and culture just imagine…ponder if you will what i suppose to be his monumental ignorance of the concept of numbers…debt…interest and exchange rates…
Oh come now! You really don’t expect the faithful to believe that the Messiah makes mistakes? The are not inaccuracies or displays of ignorance, these are deliberate tests of of faith in the “one”.
If only.
Davenport if you happen to have the full text of the LaMarre, Landreville and Beam paper, I’d like to have a look at their methodology for determining ‘conservative vs. liberal’
Potatoe is the correct spelling. If I recall, it was Jesse Jackson who really got the most mileage out of Quayle’s so-called gaffe.
Occasionally Chicago Jesus makes a decision or statement which reveals his echoing inner consciousness, but it never seems to damage him. Lately, however, I am beginning to think people – other than hardcore dems – have accepted his presidency for the meaningless, reflexive gesture that it is. They did their part to elect him for the sake of history and are waiting for it to be over.
Don’t forget about speaking Austrian. As for Biden gaffes, let’s just say that he is in a class all by himself.

I agree. It was “the thing to do” for many…Unfortunately for African Americans though, Barry’s dismal performance might have the reverse effect of sorts in future elections…
Next progressive “thing to do”?…Elect a woman of course.
@SDH: I do, but have no way of attaching it. Sorry. The methodology for determining political ideology was self-report; the relevant passage is as follows:
Political ideology, the independent variable in the hypotheses, was measured using a single-item, self-report measure. Participants were asked “Now thinking in terms of political issues, would you say you are: Very Liberal, Liberal, Somewhat Liberal,Moderate, Somewhat Conservative, Conservative, Very Conservative, or don’t know?” The responses were coded 1–7, respectively (M = 3.68, SD = 1.48).
Our support for Japan is unshakable…….
re. Davenport @5:30 – “lots of conservatives seem to not understand the intrinsic, underlying joke of The Colbert Report”.
You’re right, Davs. I have no bloody idea why even anyone at HuffPo can claim to have found Stewbert remotely funny at all for years.
This is from The Onion, Nov. 2008.
I was looking for Kate’s link to The Onion when I read this.
Lot’s of conservatives seem to not understand the intrinsic underlying joke of MSM.
Fixed that for ya Dav.
Well, the article was sort of tragically funny in a black comedy sort of way. It’s interesting to see someone write a sarcastic spoof using only actual factual events. Irony is a tough mistress.
As suggested above, let’s assume a female president next. It follows a US tradition of entitlement/right to vote.
After that can we just have someone who can actually do a proper, effective job? Personally, I don’t care if he/she/it is green and hangs upside-down from the ceiling as long as common sense prevails.
I’m second to no one in considering Obama a reckless fool but I think the 57 state comment has a decent explanation. He was apparently referring to the fact that there are 57 or so primaries, because some non-states have them like DC and Puerto Rico.
Better to note Obama’s lament that he doesn’t speak Austrian, and his response to Clinton doing better in Kentucky because ‘Arkansas is closer,’ when in fact Illinois borders Kentucky and Arkansas does not.
“””As suggested above, let’s assume a female president next”””
Monica didn’t count?
We do know Obama likes to golf , to be seen on TV. Also being a person who enjoys mingling with Hollywood actors.
He doesn’t like England or most of the West. Has a hard on for Islam.
Hatred of Jews is real apparent.
Has lot of ex terrorist weatherman friends, with a fanatically bigoted Minister.
Oh yeah he stinks as President.
Thats pretty much it really. The rest is hidden like a poisoned fortune cookie.
JMO
Good spoof.

Be careful there Bill, you don’t want to be following too closely in Gilbert Gottfried’s shoes.
bluetech: “Lot’s of conservatives seem to not understand the intrinsic underlying joke of MSM.”
See, that comment perfectly illustrates why conservatives are just no good with the funny.
@ GYM – “Monica didn’t count?”
No, I think she was more of a humidor. 🙂
Why does everyone assume Obambas 57 state reference was “a mistake”?
For one he could be geographically illiterate as many Chicago activist bums are – why can’t anyone see his Harvard scholastic records? Locked by court order.
Possibly he views the world through his corporate buddy lenses and truly see’s a global 57 states, and simply spoke out of turn. The mistake was then an Elitist one not “common folks” lingo.
There are, as it happens, 57 states in the Organization of the Islamic Conference.
What about “The Police acted stupidly” remark right after acknowledging that he didn’t have all the facts,or something like that,my google is lazy for the moment.
Biden’s call for the gentleman in the wheelchair to “stand up” to be acknowledged was priceless. To think SNL does Palin skits when Obama and Biden material is overflowing.
gordinkneehill >
Indeed! A quick search proves you are 100% correct, “57 states in the Organization of the Islamic Conference.”

The “stupid” coincidences with Barry Soetoro are getting thick. Can even he be that stupid?
The left dosen’t seem to think so, so which way is it?
Revnant Dream nails it.
I think that the number 57 that Obama referred to was the number of his communist mentors from the State Department a la Senator Joe McCarthy.
Dan Quayle NEVER misspelled “potato.”
He was asking students how to spell words written on flash cards. The student correctly spelled the word, but the card given to Quayle said, “Potatoe.”
Quayle told the student that he was wrong, not quite realizing the word on the card was misspelled.
So the truth of the matter is that THE TEACHER mispelled the word.
I still cringe at the repeated use of the word “corpseman” by Obama. Un…believable! He not only has no military experience, he’s apparently never watched a WWII film.
Umm. Davenport? If we are so not funny why do you spend so much time hanging around us? I would never post at Rabble or Puffington- so why do you post here?
I find it a little weird.
wnmc – in her heart of hearts, she’s drawn to the Dark Side.
Indiana Homes nailed Davenport the other day, said she’s a paid agitator. Overpaid, if today’s attempt is any indication.
The Reason article would be funnier if the truth wasn’t so horrific. Japan just got decimated by The Flood, Barry’s off to take in the night life in Rio.
That’s as funny as a rubber crutch.
“After that can we just have someone who can actually do a proper, effective job? Personally, I don’t care if he/she/it is green and hangs upside-down from the ceiling as long as common sense prevails.”
You’re a conservative thinking rationally, liberals on the other hand want to make themselves feel more politically correct.
They hate the country and love themselves.
This is why they all carry a list, and “Womyn” and then “Gay” are the next identifiable victim group at the top and they’ll get to wield the big-stick-of-pay-back, on their evil oppressor of a country or so help us Gia there is no Oprah.
“Crippled”, and “Islamic”, are waiting in the wings checking their watches and tapping their foot.
Phantom – that seems weird to me. How would that be a valuable service to anyone? And would someone pay me to go annoy people on HuffPo?
The Phantom: “Indiana Homes nailed Davenport the other day, said she’s a paid agitator.”
It’s true, I get a cut of Kate’s reader donations for each thread where I manage to bump the comment count up past 50. Busted.
Black Mamba said: “Phantom – that seems weird to me. How would that be a valuable service to anyone?”
You only think its weird because you’re not a brain damaged liberal, Mamba. People in possession of a functional set of neurons realize that paying union thugs to show up at protests, or having whole call centers established to get on the Rush Limbaugh Show is frickin’ stupidity.
Liberals though…
The alternative thought, that she just comes here and does what she does for free, well that’s just pitiful.
Davenport! I am your father!
