There are known unknowns. And then there is Bob Woodward.

Nixon did nothing exceptional. He acted not unlike what other administrations had done. Take at look at LBJ’s record as an example. Nixons sin was that he was a conservative president representing the Republican Party.
Well everyone knows journalists can’t be wrong, never make mistakes and are pure as the driven snow without any political or personal agendas to propagate & promote.
Right?
“Nixons sin was that he was a conservative president representing the Republican Party.”
Nixon’s real sin was the invocation of executive privilege to prevent congressional committees, independent counsel, and other oversight bodies from investigating possible legal and ethical breaches by members of the executive branch.
The precedent set by Nixon using executive privilege in this way has been expanded and severly abused by Presidents Clinton, G.W. Bush, and Obama.
“He acted not unlike what other administrations had done”

“has been expanded and severly abused by Presidents Clinton, G.W. Bush, and Obama.”
sooooo basically ‘they ALL do it’ “Right?”
sda regulars feel free to continue your hero worshiping.
Well beagle, the ONLY reason that they didnt impeach Clinton was that Al Gore would have been president and NO one wanted that.
beagle, does the phrase “choosing the lesser of two evils” carry any meaning at all for you?
Nobody ever gets everything they want. Nixon was most definitely the lesser evil than McGovern, just as Barry was far the greater evil than McCain who is nonetheless a pink underwear socialist. Bush vs Algore or Kerry? No-brainer.
As to Woodward, you have anything useful to say about this guy? Because as far as I can see he’s just another word parsing liberal rules lawyer who I’d trust as far as I could throw him by the ear.
beagle it ain’t hero worship…
Bob Woodward is more interested in flogging his books because they make MONEY.
Saying a meeting didn’t take place, even though the stamped and dated evidence is before your lyin eyes, is ideological advocacy rather than being a ‘historian’.
Sanitizing the record to present a more lurid than justifiable account leads to the more apt comment:
Andrew J. Bacevich, professor of history and international relations at Boston University (http://tinyurl.com/4cjlvm7):
“Once a serious journalist, the Washington Post’s Bob Woodward now makes a very fine living as chief gossip-monger of the governing class.”

An unbiased person who takes an honest look at Nixon and his record would conclude that Nixon was probably one the most effective presidents the US had in the 20th century. One would conclude that his policy was not just a reaction to present circumstance like Clinton and Bush senior nor was it a figment of the imagination of a slobbering press corps like Kennedy and FDR. Nixon actually got things done.
Lest anyone think that RMN was a knuckle dragging
right-wing racist, he did more for civil rights than his predecessors ever did. And that includes
LBJ’s “Great Society” and the Civil Rights Act.
Indeed he was one of the most effective Presidents of the 20th century. The best of course was Reagan.
It’s a simple question of integrity….and I believe Mr Rumsfeld.

Clinton was impeached.
“sooooo basically ‘they ALL do it’ “Right?”
Yeah, except that Bush used executive privilege to block efforts to investigate his predecessor Clinton’s role in the fundraising scandal involving campaign contributions from non-U.S. citizens and he also blocked investigations into Clinton Attorney General Janet Reno.
Basically, Bush was protecting the offices of the POTUS and Attorney General from degradation.
Nixon, Clinton, and Obama abused executive privilege to protect themselves and agents of their administrations as individuals who may have broken some laws.
A rational individual would understand the difference and not simply state, “They all do it” as if these people are somehow morally equal.
John F. Kennedy swore to ” … undertake – any sacrifice, bear any pain, proceed if necessary alone, to guarantee freedom everywhere in the world,” which led eventually to war in Viet Nam. This, in his inaugural speech. The media then, was delirious – unlike they were of George W.’s condemnation of the “Axis of Evil” (National Review)
History’s insider is just about right.
History will show Bob Woodward singing “Old Bus Driver” and bleeding from a head wound while sitting in the drivers seat of the flaming garbage truck that is modern journalism today as it swerves off the metaphorical 1000 foot cliff.
It’s like the Spider Man comics juxtaposed with Bob’s books will do more to show how journalism really functioned in our time than Insider Bob can ever hope to explain America’s governing class’s place historically.
Rumsfeld has probably forgotten more about integrity than Woodward will ever know.
Kate, can you make “beagle” change his name to a dog I don’t like?
‘Some of his most acclaimed achievements came in his quest for world stability. During visits in 1972 to Beijing and Moscow, he reduced tensions with China and the U.S.S.R. His summit meetings with Russian leader Leonid I. Brezhnev produced a treaty to limit strategic nuclear weapons. In January 1973, he announced an accord with North Vietnam to end American involvement in Indochina. In 1974, his Secretary of State, Henry Kissinger, negotiated disengagement agreements between Israel and its opponents, Egypt and Syria.’ wikisomething or other.
Compare with Kennedy whose warships watched as Cubans were machine gunned on the beach as they waited for the word to do what they were there for. Never came.
Or bambam sending a Marine combat landing/’copter deck with 200 Marines to Libya. Dude, your about 13,000 Marines short on that there fancy piece of iron.
“Arianna Huffington (http://tinyurl.com/45nqusx):
“Woodward is simply the purest distillation of what journalism has been reduced to in Washington: the thirst for access — not to better serve the public, but to better serve the journalist.”
Seems Woodward isn’t too well respected on either side of the fence.
Richard Milhouse Nixon in a nutshell:
a very flawed man. considered an ‘outsider’ in republican circles because of his humble birth.
built his image early on as a fierce opponent of communism (mccarthy hearings) and yet opened relations with the chinese.
ordered secret bombing in cambodia but FINALLY got the USA the h*ll out of vietnam.
brought down in some sort of modern greek tragedy.
etc etc.
“considered an ‘outsider’ in republican circles because of his humble birth.”
Yes, beagle. Demeecrats tend to be sons of the soil, whereas Republicans all grow up in mansions and play polo and flog the servants for fun.
Actually, Nixon was considered “an outsider” because he a)was socially awkward and b)didn’t try to make himself seem upscale, unlike a certain bootlegger’s son whose name I can’t quite recall.
LBJ, Nixon, Ford, Bush1, bush2, and probably Clinto all knew by who and why JFK & RFK were shot.
This factor led to the watergate fiasco, and was the reason behind the “tapes”
The only think Nixon was effective at was massively expanding government by creating whole new bureaucracies, defaulting on the gold standard (with the consequences coming int he form of a housing bubble), appeasement of China, and declaring ‘we’re all Keynesians now’. Then he lied to the public and congress while trying to cover up electoral fraud (which he admittedly didn’t commit). You guys just can’t go a week without making a joke of your own limited government rhetoric.
Oh and Rumsfield is an incompetent and a liar.
I always had a thing for Rumsfeld.
Nixon was impeached for all the reasons you don’t know. The Whole break in was just the theater of exit, not the cause. Worse happened that both sides did at the time. Heck half the folks who voted for his impeachment where a lot worse, as we now know about Kennedy.
There is a valid reason why he was got rid of. Booze with Prescription drugs don’t go well with A-Bombs.
