Tonight, in the interests of bringing you the sort of thing you would otherwise never see, or ever miss if you didn’t see it, German actor and singer Fred Bertelmann reprises one of his hit songs in the opening credits of a 1958 movie named after, and loosely based on, that very hit song: Der lachende Vagabund (The Laughing Vagabond).

    “Almost half the country would back a far-Right party if they gave up violence, an astonishing new poll revealed today. A total of 48 per cent said that they would support a group that vowed to crack down on immigration and Islamic extremists.
    They would also restrict the building of mosques and order the flag of St George or the Union Jack be flown on all public buildings.”

  8. A little bit old news from January, but interesting. Daihatsu, which makes small displacement cars with extremely light emissions, is being put out of buisness in Europe by overburdening CO2 emissions regulations.

    Daihatsu Motor Co., Ltd. (Daihatsu) announces that it has decided to cease sales of new vehicles in Europe as of January 31, 2013. However, Daihatsu will continue after-sales services, including supply of spare parts, for its vehicles beyond that date.
    Daihatsu currently sells new vehicles in approximately 10 countries. The decision to discontinue sales of new vehicles in Europe is the result of increasing development costs to comply with regulations in Europe, such as those related to CO2 emissions, and the appreciation of the yen against the Euro, which have had a negative impact on business results and made selling vehicles manufactured in Japan by Daihatsu no longer viable. It was made from the perspective of streamlining operations and focusing on specific areas of business.
    Notification to distributors and dealers in Europe regarding Daihatsu’s decision to cease sales of new vehicles there began on January 13, 2011.”

    If the megalomaniac were to use the $3 billion he parked in London to write his memoirs, it could easily be entitled, How the West Was Won because the story of Gaddafi is, in effect, the story of the corruption of Western leaders, and how it ultimately leads to the decline of Western civilization.
    Both Canada and the United States helped put Gaddafi on his perch and helped keep him there.

    Incredibly, Martin’s advance team in Tripoli actually chased Gaddafi for a meeting: “It took toe-tapping patience in order for Martin’s advance team to confirm a meeting between the two leaders. Like the host who flees his mansion when he hears pesky relatives are on the way for a visit, it at first appeared that Gaddafi was never going to be at home.”
    When two meetings were finally arranged, they took place in tents with camels parked outside.
    Having laid his artful dodger routine aside, the Arab leader was absolutely gushing about the depth of his friendship with Martin.
    “On a personal level, we have gained a quite personal friendship. We are friends not just because he is the Prime Minister of Canada but we shall always be friends, even if he is not the Prime Minister,” Gaddafi professed.
    Gaddafi even joked about the possibility of Martin leading a revolution some day just like he did.
    “Pretty soon I expect Canada to be a jamahiriy.” he quipped in a reference to his own socialist revolutionary state. Gaddafi’s vision calls for a “people’s power”, a non state that is both non capitalist and non communist.”
    Sounds just like the cloaked-in-democracy coming Insurrection to some.
    Martin and Company went on to meet with officials of the Great Man-Made River Project, an ambitious pipeline scheme to tap vast aquifers beneath the Sahara Desert to quench Libya’s parched coastal population. The Montreal-based Canadian engineering giant SNC-Lavalin is a participant in the massive project that will be 20 years in the making and one that is compared to building the Great Pyramids of Gaza—16 times over.”

    OTTAWA — Canadian special forces are “on standby” for deployment in Libya, local media said Tuesday, as a reconnaissance team set out to help evacuate foreign nationals from the chaotic North African country.
    “Canadian special forces (JTF2) are ‘on standby’ to depart for Libya,” Le Devoir newspaper’s military reporter Alec Castonguay said in a Twitter message.
    Canada’s defence department would not confirm the report.
    “For reasons of national security and to ensure their safety, the Canadian Forces doesn’t discuss the operations of its special operations forces unit,” the military’s spokeswoman Jenna Alexander said.
    “So we can’t confirm they would be deployed to Libya.”
    On Monday, the Canadian military sent a 13-member reconnaissance team and medics to Malta along with two C-130J cargo jets and two C-17 jumbo transport aircraft to assist in the evacuation of foreign nationals from Libya.”
