  1. Phantom that’s the half a bubble off level part I think. Fairly dismissive of things like that but it depends on when the letter was written and why.

  2. Whoa, with free education and health care offered in Libya, I’m torn between emigrating there or Cuba. I hear the winters are quite pleasant.

  3. Sounds like Libya was a paradise. They probably will not end up with anything much better and maybe even worse like Iran.

  4. Who are Jimmy and Joanne? Like everything Libbian not enough info. If what she says is true why doesn’t Ghadafi-Duck alow world media in to see?

  5. “Wherever there is a jackboot stomping on a human face there will be a well-heeled Western liberal to explain that the face does, after all, enjoy free health care and 100 percent literacy.” — John Derbyshire

  6. Sounds like there’s trouble in paradise. What brought it on pray tell?
This Ka Daffy has taken the loaves and fishes scenario to a whole new level. I would like to see if he rises up to heaven complete with his body three days after they kill him. Or was that old story fantasy too.

  7. Can’t really make any ruling on this correspondence…..
However, Ghadafi is an unstable, insane, narcisist
who has meddled in Chad and Darfur….gave sanctuary to terrorists and was involved in terrorist activities in Europe. Complained bitterly about Switzerland’s banning on minarets…
The attacks on protestors are the logical reaction of this whacho dictator…..
That the mad mullahs of Iran regard him as an unbeliever and apostate…banning Khomeni’s version of the K’aran, beards and mustashes….is true.
It is logical for the MB, financed by Iran, to take him out.
Indeed Ghadafi has claimed Al Qaida is behind this unrest…..in revenge for him turning over their people to the Italians directly/the US indirectly…..closing their training camps….
Then there is the bonus for Al Qaida of seizing the OIL wealth, and disrupting Europe’s energy/economy and jacking global OIL prices.

  8. “Free” health care and “free” education are a direct result of capitalist/western economies buying their oil. It is stunning they advertise this as a virtue of Libya.
If it weren’t for advanced civilizations and an industrious economy elsewhere, Libya would be an even bigger cesspool.

  10. If Libyans love Americans so much then why the Lockerbie bombing, the Berlin Disco bombing, etc.
This is the history of Libya under K-Daffy that we know for sure.

  11. just got back from Quebec;
    $7 day-care
    green hydro (cheap too)
    uni-language
    uni-pro-hockey team
    uni-versity tuition (cheap)
    sounds like paradise…..

  12. Warren Kinsella has a column in the sun today on Libya and the ME:
    http://www.torontosun.com/comment/columnists/warren_kinsella/2011/02/25/17408961.html
Here’s my response to it that I posted on his site – the hypocrisy he condemns his as well:
“First, the jury is still out on what will result from these revolutions- some kind of democracy or a wheeling into the midieval ditch that is Islamic fundamentalism. News out of tunisia and elsewhere is not encouraging… Thus we may one day Long for the comparatively peaceful regimes of Mubarak and khaddafi (and for that matter, the shah) lets hope that the shining beacon of democracy in Iraq (comparatively-speaking) helps to guide these countries to the placid shoals of democracy.
Second, I have to say that your column was full of contradictions:
You condemn PM for supporting khaddafi that:
“I was appalled that a Canadian prime minister was willing to break bread with a homicidal maniac. A dictator, an anti-Semite, a human rights abuser, a funder of terrorism Gadhafi was all of those things.”
Pierre Elliott Trudeau had Fidel Castro as a pallbearer and he was pretty much the same thug as you describe khaddafi as being, yet he is one of your heroes.
And Obama – accordingly should be condemned for glad-handing with Hugo Chavez – he fits the above bill perfectly.
    …
The anecdote of the red scar is a condemnation of how Canada has not supported freedom in Cuba. Well the staunchest supporters of freedom in Cuba – I think the red scar lady would agree – has been the republican party – most recently Reagan and the bush’s. I will take that as a tacit admission that the US’ policy re: Cuba has been the correct one all these decades and that the LPC’s has been the wrong one.
    ….
The industrialized nations of the world – including India and china are in a difficult spot when it comes to dealing with less than ideal governments and leaders in the ME. Collectively and in some cases, singly have us by the testicles economically speaking.
While I doubt there will be any tears shed if khaddafi is strung, up the alternative chaos that could result once he is gone could see us involved a lot more in Libya than I think a lot of people currently realize. There is already public talk in Europe about sending in NATO to secure the oil production facilities. Canada is a part of NATO and no doubt will be asked to help. Is that a circumstance that is more preferable to khaddafi? Is that something canadians rooting for unrest in the region are aware could be a consequence?”

  13. I almost started believing the letter and feeling somewhat sorry for Ghadafi until I came to the 70K “wedding gift” to every Libyan. That is too much to swallow. We know that multiple marriages are allowed in islam … so anybody would be able to figure out how to get rich in Libya. And, the condos for everybody. PLEAAAASSSSSSSEEEE !!!
However, from all appearance of what we have heard of the Colonel, he is pretty secular and only state-approved sermons are permitted in the mosques, no rantings. So far, that is the only thing to be admired about the man.

  14. Most likely they are working in the oil industry and are close friends with the government bureaucrats only, or as I strongly suspect it’s blatant propaganda. Too many absolute figures in there. Do you honestly think the wife of an american working in Libya would use such talking points?
The lady doth protest too much, methinks!
I to have been in close contact everyday. I’ve seen so such thing.

  17. “He does not allow the additions to the Koran which were inserted by the Ayatollah in the early 70’s.”
What the hell is that nonsense?? And why the hell is this email posted as an image??
    Drivel.

  18. Gord,
You missed the biggest contradiction with Kinsella’s old boss, Suharto.
As well, when Chretien made is comments on the UAE airline negotiation did nobody ask whether or not Chretien was paid to make the statement? Thats what he does to make a living these days.

  19. I don’t think there can be any doubt that this is a bit of Daffy’s propaganda. However I know that the information I am receiving from the MSM is propaganda from the other side. It would be very interesting to get a truly balanced point of view.

  20. Re: Warren Kinsella’s outrage of “willing to break bread with a homicidal maniac”. The Libyans I speak with all agree that trade with the West was a good thing, just for obvious reasons didn’t want that to include military or crowd control weapons like the UK did.

  21. One would have to write a book as long and as complete as the bible to cover all the issues involved in what is going on in the Arab and north African world.
The extremists would be fools not to take advantage of the demonstrations and revolts. At this point in time no one knows what the outcome of events will lead to.
That we tend to frame our response or attitudes in such a way that our hope-for end game will take place doesn’t mean it will happen.
We tend to forget that Ghadafi was a left wing-pro soviet revolutionary when he started out.
Forty years of power and money and extreme avarice took over.
Add to his mix mass murder, and you have todays despot. Again, a despot supported by Europe and the UN. !00 million oil dollars a day and a seat on the UN human rights council outlines a pretty interesting career.
Obama just doesn’t count anymore as the world accepts his ineptitude and silliness.
Further there is no true democratic movement any where in the arab world and in Libia even the Army isn’t the huge organized power group that it is in Egypt.
The complexities of tribal politics and real political are lost on scribblers like Kinsella.
I don’t believe he knows very much about what is happening on the ground in North Africa.
We need to avoid jumping to any conclusions because at this stage we should be wary of what we wish for.

  22. During the Egyption disruption a friend received an e-mail from her friend in Egypt who expressed concerns about the crowds in the public square. The locals didn’t recognise their dialects, and had no idea who they were or where they came from.
I don’t know the credibility of the ‘Dear Michael’ letter but I find that similarity interesting.

  23. melwilde, that was a well thought out comment. It is too early to see where this is all going in the ME, but there is a good possibility that it will not turn out well for our security.

  24. The similarity between the ‘conflicts’ in the Middle East, the timing of them, the way the media presents them, the unobtrusive players, even the similar signage, should cause even the saggiest breasts to perk up and pay attention.
Aren’t the riots actually a co-ordinated effort? A triage? Isn’t the combined assault of a freshly ignited Middle East labor movement, along with the Muslim Brotherhood plus the communist/socialist movement, all three of them in concert, specifically a planned, purposeful trio designed to defeat Middle east capitalism?
Obama, in the light of day, would like nothing better than to watch capitalist America “pass”, and he has done everything he can to facilitate socialism.
A sure way to defeat any kind of Middle East capitalism as we know it, is to take control of the Suez Canal so that commerce dies; and labor, Muslim Brotherhood, and socialists will dance at the wake.

  25. GYM @ 3:18
Do you really view Nobama as inept?
On the contrary, I spy a fox.
And although he may CLAIM otherwise, his ACTIONS are anti-Israel, anti-capitalist, and anti Chrisitan.

  26. I’ve been getting similar information from people on the ground in Libya too. I’m not there but there’s something about this that smacks of the MB/Iran at work.

  27. Ghadafi indiscriminately murdered all the passengers on Pan Am 103, and 11 residents of the town of Lockerbie, so he deserves death. That’s how you deal with heads of state who indiscrimnately murder the citizens of 19 different countries. Unfortunately, the political class lacked the will to wage even the brief military campaign which would have been necessary to topple him.
Contrary to the email’s implicationn that ” the enemy of my enemy is my friend” he is truly an enemy of Western civilization: he only gave up his weapons of mass destruction when he saw the regime change take place in Iraq.
Let the Libyans hang him high. The best outcome would be a NATO military occupation; with the aim being the de-Nazification of the senior levels of the Libyan government.

  28. small c @ 4:07
Every dictator develops his own peculiar fetish, which usually consists of money, power and women; and all too often, the gathering up of his so called ‘comforts’ routinely causes death, grief and pain, as you have indicated.
But the alternative being offered just may cost a higher price. For the West.
Ghadafi can be bought. The Muslim Brotherhood cannot. Which you are more prepared to bargain with? Or worse, which one are you more prepared to send your elected representative to, to bargain on your behalf?

  29. Hey, folks, check out Shirley Q. Liquor (click on the h/t, which’ll take you on over to Five Feet of Fury’s blog). “She’s” a hoot and a half and her solutions to Ka Daffy and Libya’s problems are as good as any others — and a lot more fun.

I’m not apologizing for Ghadafi in any way, shape or form, but he blew the US plane up because a US Plane killed his son. In his mind it wasn’t indiscriminate but the hideous results certainly were.

  31. Upon further consideration, free housing, free medical care, free utilities and etc. is 100% completely consistent with Libyan jet fighters strafing Libyan cities. Inevitable outcome, really.

  32. Skeptical is prudent, Robert. I was ultra-skeptical, until I realized the MB/socialist/unions tripod had both an experienced 1)limitless-funder plus an experienced 2)PR-agent working for them 24/7.
    That’s when I said, “Oh, %$@&”.

  33. “He does not allow the additions to the Koran which were inserted by the Ayatollah in the early 70’s.”
    Matt M,
he/she is probably quoting anti-Khomeini propaganda. Shia Quran is supposedly different from “normal” (i.e. Sunni) Qu’ran, and the difference is due to changes made by Khomeini. It is, of course, total bs but if they are Sunni and Muslim and from Libya then for them such things are “obvious” and they would be surprised that you don’t know it.
As for other things —– some things are true (free schooling, secular behaviour at work but definitely not at home and so on), t I think Libyans are very…hmm… parochial.

    Thanks for the info.
There’s something about this whole deal that makes me think that Libya IS under attack and the only person to defend it is Ghadafi. Strafing people on the street, makes sense if they’re invaders on the street or even those who support invaders.

  35. “me think that Libya IS under attack and the only person to defend it is Ghadafi.”
I wouldn’t go that far. ..but it appears that maybe things aren’t black & white here and the truth is somewhere in the middle.

  36. dot…I agree.
Ghadafi is a creep. No question, and as mentioned he should be on trial for Lockerbie.
But how many of you were caught a bit surprised by the civil unrest in Cairo, and now Libya? This is about ordinary citizens that have lived relatively peaceful lives and now their homeland is in turmoil, and strangers in their city square.

  37. M’thinks the latest Al Qaida announcement calling the people of Saudi to revolt, the people of a different dialect in the square in Egypt, the “Islamic State” rhetoric coming out of Tunisia, the “Rebels” vs. the Pro-Government forces in Libya, organized, trained and well armed “Rebel Forces” in Libya…..this is far, far to domino like to be accidental. It’s the nasty old Caliphate stuff again.

  38. Initially, I was befuddled when prominent Egyptian generals were actually in the USA when the Egyptian riots broke out. And they stayed for longer than believable. And Obama was noticably quiet.
I was befuddled, but Obama and the Egyptian generals were not. The world was unfolding for them, as they hoped it would.

  39. I’m not apologizing for Ghadafi in any way, shape or form, but he blew the US plane up because a US Plane killed his son.
    Not so.
K-Daffy spread propaganda that the U.S. air strike killed his adopted daughter, not his son.
    It didn’t happen.
So where is his excuse for blowing up that U.S. plane now, eh?
    And that U.S. air strike?
That was for the bombing of the La Belle nightclub in Berlin that killed 3 people and wounded 229 others.

  40. Oz,
Dictators are not exactly the epitome of reason. Perhaps he was refused to open a bank account, so he retaliated. Perhaps he was refused a visa for his family to visit Fiji, so he lashed out. Perhaps he asked the UN for another favor, and they refused so he ‘taught them a lesson’.
The logic of a well fed cat is elusive.
But the point to note is that the recent dictators were willing to negotiate to gain goodies for living. To make life more pleasant. More luxurious. For life.
The next set of negotiators may be ones who view death as better than life. That death is the singular goal, and self-sacrifice will provide an enriched death.
    Try and reason with that.

  41. Patsplace – It’s never been firmly established that the youth killed was Ghadafi’s child. Even if he was, let’s remember that the air raid that killed him was in response to the Ghadafi instigated bombing of a nightclub frequented by American servicemen, and thus it was, by any standard of international conduct, other than Ghadafi’s, completely justified. (This was verified by NSA signal intercepts.) I am curious why you give the morality of a serial killer like Ghadafi any legitimacy whatsoever.
dot – ” Ghadafi can be bought. ” In light of his abandonment of his weapons of mass destruction after the 2003 deposing of Saddam Hussein, I feel the correct formulation is ” Ghadafi can be intimdated “, and, better still, ” Ghadafi can be deposed and a Western oriented regime will take his place. ” All it takes is will on the part of the western countries. They hold all the cards.
    dot –

  42. The next set of negotiators may be ones who view death as better than life. That death is the singular goal, and self-sacrifice will provide an enriched death.
    Try and reason with that.
    – dot
dot – Why should there be negotiations? They aren’t a legitimate government. They should be pre-empted, in one way or another. The American experience in Iraq with the al Quaeda in Iraq terrorists shows that there is no negotiating with them – they want your head. You confront them militarily, and defeat them. Michael Yon’s dispatches from Iraq made it abundantly clear that al Qaeda quit Iraq because they made a rational choicewhen confronted with the choices: a.) stay, and be killed or b.) flee, and save your life. They left, to save their skins.
The Islamists are rational, and, best of all, no match for Canadian, British, or American infantrymen. All it takes is the will to defeat them. Treating Islamists with kid gloves gets you nothing but endless terrorism.
