Why this blog?
Until this moment I have been forced to listen while media and politicians alike have told me "what Canadians think". In all that time they never once asked.
This is just the voice of an ordinary Canadian yelling back at the radio -
"You don't speak for me."

"Go back to collecting your welfare livelihood." - Michael E. Zilkowsky
Well written- thanks for the story.
What kept going through my head as I read this article. Why do people put up with this kind of treatment. Its not like they have a lot to lose.
The lack of hope or future in this piece about Libya speaks for itself.
JMO
Another socialist triumph! Oppressed minorities in Western countries such as feminists, people of colour, homosexuals etc. are desperate to emigrate to a country like Libya and will be leaving any time now…..
It’s like Cuba without the music.
Tripoli reminds me of Detroit.
A long time ago, when circumstance occasioned my contact with “spooks”, I had a bizarre conversation with a pair.
This was about a month prior to the great USAF bombing raid on Libya.
It seems they had been directed to produce “intelligence” on Libya….The one fella commented it was a blatant request for a list of targets for bombing…..
Their problem was apart from the obvious….Libyan air bases and a coupla army bases…..there were no targets….nothing to report.
Oil depots/facilities were off limits…
One of the bits and pieces I have heard is the Qadafi must rely on mercenaries from Mali…..murderous tuaregs…..not berbers or arabs. This makes reports of military units in Benghazi joining the protestors credible.
It seems more and more that this MB instigated pan-islamic revolution is more and more the sorcerer’s apprentice learning the hard lessons of unintended consequences.
but daDaffy has a hot daughter and the coolest Amazonian bodyguards…for those two things i can forgive a man a lot..
….and a son who looks like a well fed thug……..
well, begley, that’s a stupid comment. You can’t forgive that man anything he’s done.
Looks like Detroit!
Kate, I enjoyed the link very much, thank you.
There’s still some very intermittent internet service in Libya, and was able to contact a friend in Tripoli about the situation. Her words were “It’s hell here“.. I get the feeling things are much more serious that we are hearing.
Regional tribes appear to be arming themselves and pushing back government forces.

What burns my thrusters even more than the abject stupidity of Qadaffi and his regime, is the people like Jack Layton and all his useful idiots doing their flat-out best to bring that HERE.
Go Libyan rioters!
It seems the Internet, Facebook and Twitter plus the ubiquitous cell phone are finally the “killer ap” humanity has been waiting for since Sam Colt created the previous major breakthrough in self protection. Self-organizing flash-mobs are the answer to totalitarian dictatorships.
well wendy….what can i say…
daDaffy also has an unerring sense of the sartorial…..as I do as a matter of fact.
like this morning i asked the missus if the Tyrian purple kaftan and matching tasselled fez i was wearing made my head look too big….”not at all O Serene One” she answered.
“It seems the Internet, Facebook and Twitter plus the ubiquitous cell phone are finally the “killer ap” humanity has been waiting for… ”
I believe it was also just a matter of time here and those were the sparks. My impression is Libya has been going though some extremely rapid changes. Not nearly as isolated and conservative as it once was. Even Michael Totten’s article feels a little dated, although it’s only a few years old.

“Two Libyan fighter jets land in Malta”
“VALLETTA (Reuters) – Two Libyan fighter jets and two civilian helicopters landed unexpectedly in Malta Monday, witnesses said.”
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2677335/posts
Agreed Phantom, on all counts. The internet and its progeny such as twitter and facebook along with cell phones have released a genie that is becoming increasingly difficult to squeeze back into the bottle. And since autocratic regimes need the very technology they seek to contain in order to keep up with the surrounding despotic Jonses, they create an internal contradiction which hopefully will result in their own downfall.
Someone once said that majority rule is the best defense against extremism. Hopefully, in the case of radical Islam, this will also be borne out and the new technology will allow the people of the arab world to curtail radical Islam’s worst excesses. Its ability to survive the penetration of these technologies, which it resists mightily, remains an open question.
These are interesting times. I’m wondering when Cuba’s turn will come.
“Pyongyang on the Med”
I see airfare to Libya has recently dropped to $149 from the US. Any takers?
It’s a chokehold on AlMoh.
Next? KSA, where da Mecca stone fell/landed from Al’s hands.

“Oil Companies Plan Evacuations From Libya”
New York Times – Julia Werdigier, Rachel Donadio – 58 minutes ago
LONDON – Global oil companies said Monday that they were making plans to evacuate employees in Libya after some operations there were disrupted by political unrest.”

“Military planes are attacking civilians, protesters in Tripoli now. The civilians are frightened. Where is the United Nations, where is Amnesty International?” al-Warfali told Reuters.

“Two Libyan fighter jets land in Malta”
A couple sources are reporting that the pilots have defected rather than bomb civilians.

“…airfare to Libya has recently dropped to $149 from the US.” And you only need a one way ticket!
Looks like one way tickets to Venezuela will be in high demand.
Reporting that aircraft are strafing crowds and neighborhoods in Tripoli now, somebody is getting kinda excited in the military there.
Things are looking up for Qadaffi going DOWN, baby.
Could be Cuba might fall next week. Good time not to go on vacation there, I’d say.
“Reporting that aircraft are strafing crowds and neighborhoods in Tripoli now,”
True, I’m chatting with a Libyan in Tripoli now. Says there’s gunshots and bombing all over the city. It’s not isolated.
I am working with a young Libyan man who has been in contact with relatives back home. They are using more than bullets….antitank rounds have been deployed as well.
Unofficial reports of Italian aircraft in the sky.
word has it that the “Duck” has flown the coop
and is headed for Hugovile (venezuela)

I remember the good old days, Daffy Duck would threaten the world and everyone would shake with fear. Then Ronald Regan came along and rammed a cruise missile down his throat. Not another word from this school yard bully for many years. Now the bully is running for his life. The people have had enough. It must hurt the ego of a guy like Daffy when he realizes that he isn’t really liked by his own people. Send this guy to the same place Saddam has gone.
But…But…Isn’t Mo no the U.N. Human Rights Council?..So I guess he knows whats best for his people” Come on everyone, give Mo some space here.
Three Canadians working on a Suncor rig several miles from Tripoli have just hastily grabbed backpacks (water?) and rushed out into the desert to hike about 10 miles to their nearest neighbor Suncor rig — after their rig was attacked by ‘rebels’ ..
Careful what you wish for … hopefully all of the ex-pat Canadians, Americans, etc. make it out of that sh*tstorm in the M.E.
Even the U.A.E ex-pats are beginning to look over their shoulders … maybe time to load up those Airbus 380’s and get the h–l out of dodge. Now.

“Libyan deputy ambassador to the UN: ‘What’s happening is genocide’
BBC News”
Colonel Muammar Qaddafi will fit right in with Hugo. Maybe they could invite their soul mate Jack over for tea.
However, that being said, all the green flags etc do not bode well for Libya or North Africa.
Most likely the Libyans are replacing a Marxist thug with fancy uniforms for a thugocracy in black kaftans.
Like any of us would visit the Guardian for any accurate news.
“after their rig was attacked by ‘rebels’ ..”
A tribe in (or called?) Al-Zawia threatened to sabotage the oil fields “if the blood shed of innocent Libyans doesn’t stop before 24 hours” (the links are missing now) It’s been roughly 24 hours so it’s possibly related.
