  2. What kept going through my head as I read this article. Why do people put up with this kind of treatment. Its not like they have a lot to lose.
    The lack of hope or future in this piece about Libya speaks for itself.

  6. A long time ago, when circumstance occasioned my contact with “spooks”, I had a bizarre conversation with a pair.
    This was about a month prior to the great USAF bombing raid on Libya.
    It seems they had been directed to produce “intelligence” on Libya….The one fella commented it was a blatant request for a list of targets for bombing…..
    Their problem was apart from the obvious….Libyan air bases and a coupla army bases…..there were no targets….nothing to report.
    Oil depots/facilities were off limits…
    One of the bits and pieces I have heard is the Qadafi must rely on mercenaries from Mali…..murderous tuaregs…..not berbers or arabs. This makes reports of military units in Benghazi joining the protestors credible.
    It seems more and more that this MB instigated pan-islamic revolution is more and more the sorcerer’s apprentice learning the hard lessons of unintended consequences.

  12. There’s still some very intermittent internet service in Libya, and was able to contact a friend in Tripoli about the situation. Her words were “It’s hell here“.. I get the feeling things are much more serious that we are hearing.
    Regional tribes appear to be arming themselves and pushing back government forces.

    I believe it was also just a matter of time here and those were the sparks. My impression is Libya has been going though some extremely rapid changes. Not nearly as isolated and conservative as it once was. Even Michael Totten’s article feels a little dated, although it’s only a few years old.

  17. Agreed Phantom, on all counts. The internet and its progeny such as twitter and facebook along with cell phones have released a genie that is becoming increasingly difficult to squeeze back into the bottle. And since autocratic regimes need the very technology they seek to contain in order to keep up with the surrounding despotic Jonses, they create an internal contradiction which hopefully will result in their own downfall.
    Someone once said that majority rule is the best defense against extremism. Hopefully, in the case of radical Islam, this will also be borne out and the new technology will allow the people of the arab world to curtail radical Islam’s worst excesses. Its ability to survive the penetration of these technologies, which it resists mightily, remains an open question.
    These are interesting times. I’m wondering when Cuba’s turn will come.

  26. Reporting that aircraft are strafing crowds and neighborhoods in Tripoli now, somebody is getting kinda excited in the military there.
    Things are looking up for Qadaffi going DOWN, baby.
    Could be Cuba might fall next week. Good time not to go on vacation there, I’d say.

    True, I’m chatting with a Libyan in Tripoli now. Says there’s gunshots and bombing all over the city. It’s not isolated.

  31. I remember the good old days, Daffy Duck would threaten the world and everyone would shake with fear. Then Ronald Regan came along and rammed a cruise missile down his throat. Not another word from this school yard bully for many years. Now the bully is running for his life. The people have had enough.   33. Three Canadians working on a Suncor rig several miles from Tripoli have just hastily grabbed backpacks (water?) and rushed out into the desert to hike about 10 miles to their nearest neighbor Suncor rig — after their rig was attacked by ‘rebels’ ..
    Careful what you wish for … hopefully all of the ex-pat Canadians, Americans, etc. make it out of that sh*tstorm in the M.E.
    Even the U.A.E ex-pats are beginning to look over their shoulders … maybe time to load up those Airbus 380’s and get the h–l out of dodge. Now.

  35. Colonel Muammar Qaddafi will fit right in with Hugo. Maybe they could invite their soul mate Jack over for tea.
    However, that being said, all the green flags etc do not bode well for Libya or North Africa.
    Most likely the Libyans are replacing a Marxist thug with fancy uniforms for a thugocracy in black kaftans.
    Like any of us would visit the Guardian for any accurate news.

    A tribe in (or called?) Al-Zawia threatened to sabotage the oil fields “if the blood shed of innocent Libyans doesn’t stop before 24 hours” (the links are missing now) It’s been roughly 24 hours so it’s possibly related.
