  1. The National (UAE):

Almost US$50 billion (Dh183.64bn) has been wiped off the value of Arab stock markets after just over a week of anti-government demonstrations in Egypt.

The value of rocks and tourniquets, on the other hand, has more than tripled.

  2. too bad “when-i’m-64-i’ll-look-like-angela-landsbury” drank the barry-flavored kookaid and showed no class dissing my boy W while being feted at the WH last year. no wonder i’ve always been more of a stones and who fan…

  3. Yes, Mark R, do pass it on – it’s a catchy little number, and the people look so *happy*.
    Yid With Lid:
Who in the Middle East could the United States depend on five years ago to support its basic policy goals? Egypt, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, Turkey.
“Who in the Middle East can the United States basically depend on today? Israel, Iraq (?), Jordan (until next week?), Saudi Arabia.
“Who in the Middle East is likely to oppose basic U.S. policy goals today? Egypt (soon), Gaza Strip (Hamas), Iran, Lebanon (Hizballah), Libya, Sudan, Syria, Turkey.
“Might there be a trend here?”

  4. EBD, you are right, it is a catchy tune, but somehow I doubt that the descendants of the millions buried in mass graves appreciate the songs title all that much.

  5. I see Suzukster has written an epitaph to ethical oil, but conveniently omits and ignores the whole premise behind Ezra’s position. Not once does the fruitfly touch on the Arab issue, funding terrorism by purchasing ME oil……a very weak response.
I would love to have him go to McMurray and make his same hypocritical point, and see if he gets out of town without a good tarsand and feathering!

  6. (Deleted. Please don’t publish entire articles in the Tips. Feel free to post an excerpt/description and the link. – EBD)

  7. At 8:30pm on the West Coast and checking the UK news it seems that the Army has opened fire on the demonstrators in Egypt. Here is the address:
    http://www.express.co.uk/home
It seems that we maybe on the verge of another RED/WHITE revolution. Not quite 100 years since the last one although that one wasn’t about ousting a dictator. What you can bet on is that the winner will be the party that is the most ruthless in attempting to gain power. As per the UK article ”
A UN official said last night up to 300 people may have died since the uprising began, including 10 in the recent anti and pro-government clashes. ”

  8. Beautiful British Columbia: Massacre 100 sled dogs (one by one in front of each other) in Whistler ‘cos business is slow and receive Workers Comp for the post-traumatic stress.
See sidebar for additional background stories.

  9. Wouldn’t have helped, Vitruvius – same singer.

I was going to post a Teletubbies song, but there’s that pink triangle thing…

  10. MND,
I’m just asking. How many millions do you think that BC taxpayers should spend to make sure that “this NEVER happens again”?
And BTW, I have a dog … he licks my elbow if he needs to “go” before I wake up.
Another BTW, Will the SPCA, who seems to be using this to get more money from the taxpayers, refund the money if it happens again?
Does anyone think if we, the taxpayers of BC, gave the SPCA a billion dollars last year the dogs would have suffered a different fate?

  11. Speedy, thanks, the Red Army singers and musicians are good. They and the Cultural Singers put on a good show. We have seen them twice in St. Petersburg in the last two years.
I doubt Lenin and Stalin would appreciate EBD’s selection for tonight and that is good.

  12. Vίtruvius, I used to believe de gustibus non est disputandum until I met a guy who said Zeppo was the funniest Marx brother.
RT: Frank J. at IMAO provides a transcript — I feel compelled, for some reason, to give formal notification that it’s a satire — of Obama’s statement on Egypt.
    Excerpt:
“With all that is going on, we want the people of Egypt to know unequivocally: We are aware of them. Egypt is a country, and it will continue to be a country. With pyramids. Pyramids built in 2560 B.C.
“But let me be clear: It is time for Honsi Mubarak to do things that are relevant to this situation. Things are happening, and things happening require responses. That’s why it is contingent on Mubarak to respond to these things that are happening with responses. We are firm on this…”
    The rest here.

  13. EBD, loved the video. Don’t understand the birds chirping as background effect, but whatever. 😀
Also, Stalin pics? Yikes, fun and catchy tune, but really . . . . . .

  14. Erik Larsen: ” … Don’t understand the birds chirping as background effect”
I’m not sure, but I think someone said last night, that what’s a brain tumor sounds like in your head.

  15. Erik, the Stalin pics are just so much kitsch to modern Russians. To commenters here…not so much.
As for the birds chirping, it’s not from the McC***** video. One of the videos in this post (near the bottom of the main page) is (apparently) on an autoplay rampage – Snagglepuss brought it up a couple of days ago. I’d fix it if I knew how.

  16. Vitruvius: I assume that every Marx Brothers fan — with the exception of the guy I mentioned — would agree that Zeppo is infrastructure, and that each time you link to The Sons of Martha you are making the – entirely valid – point that infrastructure is no laughing matter.

  17. I do most emphatically do not agree. The lighting guys and the sound technicians and the set designers were infrastructure; Zeppo was an amiable nepot. (Chico was a problem gambler. His brothers wound up putting him on a strict allowance. It’s not relevant, I just think it’s interesting.)

  18. Well, that probably won’t happen tonight, Black Mamba, so I think I’ll cash in my chips & wish y’all a fond adieu. Until another day, then, thanks as always Kate & EBD, and please don’t forget to tip your waitress & the doorman on your way out, folks. Good night.

  19. L’iberal L’Iffy’s L’Iggy L’affaire L’ingerie goes viral.
    Iggy la Porn Star?
    It’s Taber’s fault.
    But, ‘Rubygate’, Dahling?
    P.S. “Scrivi un commento”.
“Scandalo numero 2 – Si tratta del commento del politico Michael Ignatieff alla vicenda. Il leader dei Liberali si è infatti detto un entusiasta appassionato della lingerie femminile (su corpo altrui), ribadendo però come non sia corretto che quella più ‘estrema’ venga venduta su un sito come Canada Post. Ecco il testo integrale della dichiarazione: “Well, I’m an absolute fan of lacy lingerie. I want to make that perfectly clear, but I don’t think it’s appropriate to sell that on Canada Post. There is no greater fan of lingerie than me but I just don’t think it’s appropriate on a Crown corporation website”.”

  20. John Lennon was my favourite Beatle. That’s was. When I was young and impressionable and thought that giving peace a chance was plausible. Now, I realize that John was delusional.
    ‘Never liked Paul.
So, there’s George and Ringo left. Of the two, I’ll take George. In the meantime, I’m reading Keith Richards’ autobiography.

  21. And so it begins…
@ebertchicago: Does the Right understand that the violent demonstrators in Egypt are paid rightist goons? Does Beck still think they’re commies?
I knew the left would have to distance themselves from their comrades in the Egyptian NDP, but I didn’t think they would do it so quickly.

  22. I just heard an interview on the radio with Global National’s Jas Johal, who is currently in Cairo. Among other things, he mentioned that a lot of the pro-Mubarak thugs are reported to be public sector employees who don’t want things to change.
Hmmmm, what does that remind us of over here in North America?! The more things change, the more things stay the same!

  23. “The value of rocks and tourniquets, on the other hand, has more than tripled.”
    lol
    regarding the gay-math article.
“Maths — teaching statistics through census findings about the number of homosexuals in the population, and using gay characters in scenarios for maths problems;”
Why stop at gay-math; why not be inclusive and make it multi-cultural-gay-math?
    Example question:
Using the provided case study, determine the percentage of the population by race that have:
    a) penises larger than 8″
    b) penises between 6″ & 8″
    c) penises smaller than 6″
    d) what is the relationship between penis size and the woman’s satisfaction index?
    e) what is the relationship between penis size and the gay’s satisfaction index?
    f) explain why the penis size of Chinese men is inversely proportionate to the number of Chinese people?
Bonus question? What percentage of men have been “labeled with small penises” and what should be done?
    Math is gay!

  24. Just remember, SDA faithful, Canadian culture is no better than any other.

I’ve noticed that lately 80-90 percent of my ‘Readers Tips’ (specifically Readers Tips) posts are caught in the filter or being held back; and when they do get through the links are more often than not disconnected.
If you have any suggestions to how I can get around this I’d be much obliged. Also, if you feel there is a content issue with my posts and you are screening and disabling them, then please advise me as to what the problem is so I can remedy it. I’m not want to waste my time if my ‘tips’ are not wanted.
(Hey, EBD here. Every submitted comment that brings up that “pending” page has gone automatically to the spam filter (i.e. is not being juried by me or anyone else) usually because of a particular word. I’m learning new ones every day; I can’t count the number of times I’ve looked at a comment of mine that gets caught up and thought, “geez, what could it possibly be this time?”
Kate has listed the biggies (insurance, viagra, poker, online , etc) in the “before submitting…” blurb atop the comment box — “online” is quite a common trigger, as many URLs, including the WSJ’s and David Warren’s, include the word, and “insurance” is a common one recently too in light of Obamacare — but there are others.
Oh, and URLs that contain the character “&” often get caught up too.
In your case, I can tell you with certainty that I have never ever deleted any of your comments, and I can almost guarantee you that Kate or other guest bloggers haven’t either. The rule of thumb which is worth repeating here once in a while is that if you see your comment published and it then disappears a while later, it’s been deleted by human hands, but whenever you see the “pending” page as soon as you hit “post” it’s an entirely automated (unjuried) decision and is therefore obviously never personal.)
