    “Horrific video footage has emerged of Taliban insurgents stoning a couple to death for alleged adultery in northern Afghanistan. Hundreds of villagers can be seen on the video standing around as the woman, Siddqa, is buried up to her waist in a four foot hole in the ground.
    “Two mullahs pass sentence before the crowd begins to throw rocks at her head and body as she desperately tries to crawl free. But the 19-year-old collapses to the ground, covered in blood – but miraculously still alive.
    “At this point a Taliban fighter shoots her three times in the head with an AK-47The crowd can be heard shouting allahu akbar as she is killed.
    “Her lover, Khayyam, is then marched in front of the crowd with his hands tied behind his back. He is blindfolded with his own tunic and crouches down close to the ground as he tried to protect his body from the stones. But he is battered to the floor by a barrage of rocks. He can be heard sobbing before eventually falling silent.
    “Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid defended the stoning…’There are people who call it inhuman – but in doing so they insult the Prophet. They want to bring foreign thinking to this country.'”

    The video, by the way, supports what Oz was saying in the dedicated Egypt thread from today. What Oz was saying and I fear.
    It must also be noted that few to no one on the Left will ever speak out against the Muslim Brotherhood. The Cowards of Equivalence should be their moniker from now on!

    One amusing thing is that there’s a 23 year old male commentator from Pakistan who feels that Ryan is “factual and unbiased”. Then he goes on to bash America and Israel. Proof positive that he’s one of Sid Ryan’s kissin’ cousins!!!

    You offer a interesting implied juxtaposition. The progressive thinkers at CARE Canada claim only a women, any women, can understand the plight of third world females. Yet they shamelessly invoke the iconic National Geographic image of Sharbat Gula, a Pashtun from the Tora Bora region of Pakistan.
    Pashtun province, as you probably know, is noted for it’s progressive culture.

  26. Interesting economic logic by the CBC. Computer upgrade project started in 2002, aptly named Project Vision, to be finished by 2005, budgeted at $33M. Project actually completed by 2009 and only $18M over budget or $$51M. In a little creative accounting CBC revised the budget to ta-da $63M so the project came in under budget.
    The CBC’s spokesman Marco Dube stated that this new system will save it $1M per year (estimated, so who knows) so payback will be 51 years, seems perfectly acceptable.
    Kevin Gaudet of Canadian Taxpayers Federation notes that “My personal experience is that bringing these projects on time and on budget is better in the private sector because there are pressures to do so, such as job security.”
    Down the rathole of EHealth and so many other government computer systems.

  30. I wonder If I could sue the army for making me shave. I was so traumatized that I haven’t shaved since I got out. My beard is short now but for a while I was often mistaken for a member of ZZ Top. And it wasn’t because I can play the guitar.

  31. CTV has an interview with a well-spoken Egyptian who has some interesting points on democracy.Unfortunately,I can’t find it on CTV’s website,therefore no link.

    He does say some that I agree with,along the lines of what ET said the other night,”democracy can be messy”. He then erodes his credibility by saying that Canada has done many wrongs. His examples,women were not allowed to vote or practice medicine,and that we bought children from the Brits to use as basic slave labour.

    This man appears to be making excuses for what I see as the inevitable eradication of all ‘infidels’ from the Middle East. I think he knows it also,and yes,he is a Canadian,or Egyptian-Canadian whatever.

    If the reports about a coalition between the muslim brotherhood and hamas are true,we are in for a world of trouble. The bad moon is rising fast.

  33. There is a massive power vacuum in
    Egypt and no possibility for a pro-democracy group to make any moves simply because none was ever permitted to exist. The Muslim Brotherhood no doubt has supporters in the conscripted army and the police. Their allies in Hamas are now moving over the border has the police have ‘mysteriously’ disappeared.
    How much of the military decides to act in concert with the MB will show how messy this will get. There is no chance for democracy in Egypt and the country is now forever changed. The talking heads on CBC and other media blabbing on about how this uprising is good for the people is ludicrous – these TV bobble-heads have no concept of what lays ahead for the regular folk. The choices are chaos and oppression and strict sharia law under the MB.
    This will be very bloody very soon. JMHO
