Ezra is a shill and his arguments are dull and deluded.
The Alberta oilsands are a terribly inferior source of energy…the EROI is the WORST of any current energy source. If we really wanted to do what’s best for Canada we would develop the sands slowly while re-investing plenty back into technology.
You all miss the mark on the issue in the middle east…by a long shot. The US is interested in KEEPING that oil right where it is in order to keep world dominance (especially so now a days with the tanked US economy and rising economic powers in China and India). They’d use the oil if they didn’t have closer, more stable sources (Canada and South America). In these respects, look out for increased US pressure on South American countries with oil and nationalistic endeavors.
Canada is just the US’s little dog, serving up our natural resources for cheap to a crippled nation desperate to keep itself from collapsing.
Alright, BTJ, what about Ezra Levant’s book SPECIFICALLY did you find lacking?

Hey BTJ….with the commotion going on in Egypt, you might want to buy shares in the oilsands. Looks like those shares will be heading up if there is any disruption of oil shipments throught the Suez canal. Hey…you might also want to stock up on Potassium Iodide pills.
I won’t be able to attend that evening with Ezra. I am however reading Ethical Oil and find it quite engaging, even eyeopening read. Ezra breaks the subject into very tidy sections.
And yes, now I have a better understanding of why non-islamo-fascist sourced oil should be demanded by consumers.
Recommended reading for anyone that uses oil to power their life.

Joey, please explain your claim that:
a) Egypt would allow any disruption (it’s a HUGE part of their economy)
b) Any interruption would cause Alberta oil demand to go up significantly (more than 99% goes to the US already, and the US gets the majority of its oil from Canada, Mexico, and South America)
The bigger issue for the oilsands is the gap in crude price benchmarks.
The riots in Egypt are an opportunity for the Muslim Brotherhood to seize power giving them an additional chance to control both sides of the Suez Canal.
That can only mean bad things for world economy and a jump in oil prices.
Good thing Canada is not in OPEC.
Ezra’s book is excellent. Very well argued and very well documented.

BTJ claims that the Egyptian riots by the Islamists are a chance for the Egyptian population to escape dictatorship. Funny that is exactly what some claimed when the Shaw was overthrown in Iran.

As I’ve said…I’ve listened to Ezra discuss his argument on ‘ethical oil’ (just the title itself is a misnomer). I don’t need to read his book to have heard his debate.

Osumashi Kinyobe: Yes, it is a good book, and makes some very direct points (how boorishly un-Canadian). After reading it I stuck it into a drawer lest some rabid environmentalist see it and accuse me of being in the pay of big oil.
Indeed I should have written Shah instead of Shaw as Bartinsky pointed out. I thought most would figure it out, and in any case the spelling mistake did not make my statement false.
