A while back we saw a knife-throwning Mom who showed her skills by barely missing her two-and-a-half and six-year-old daughters. Tonight, we look at archival footage of a rifle-totin’ husband who tests out that newfangled bullet-proof glass by having his wife hold a sheet of it in front of her face while he fires away. Why so jumpy, hon?

    [ The end of climate science and the fall of climate politics could never have happened in a world of typewriters, faxes and three TV networks. Cheap telecom and the Internet brought it about, as any document that mattered became available with a Google inquiry and a mouse click. The East Anglia guys were still living in a world of paper journals. Nowadays all the peer reviews that matter come quickly by dozens to anyone who posts something worth (or not worth) reading. Lots of junk turns up, but that’s the freight for information that flows so cheaply and freely.

    You know, I’m not a particularly religious person but let’s just say that I’m an agnostic with strong spiritual inclinations. Most important of all, I think, is that I realize that there’s a whole lot more each of us doesn’t know than we do know.
    With that in mind, I’ve repeatedly noticed that the biggest Leftist anti-Christian atheists are frequently also those who so deeply believe in the Man-Made Global Warming Theory. And yet, much like throwing a sponge at a teflon coated ball, they’re unable to grasp the deep irony of this dichotomy.
    Anyone else noticed this?

  3. Robert – and that is a surprise to whom? Those who don’t believe in nothing will fall for anything, n’est pas?
    I find it particularly funny when someone invokes the precautionary principle to call for carbon sequestration. Forcibly injecting an acidifying agent into bedrock, including limestone strata that is eaten by acid (aka carbonic acid, caused by carbon sequestration)… what could possibly go wrong? Oh yeah….

    I had a prof who would not drive the Squamish highway within 2 days of a rain because of geotechnical instabilities. Imagine what happens when you add acidic consumption of limestone layers and increases in water/pore pressures to groundwater systems. The “settled” geothermal system changes have nothing on what will happen when we start playing with groundwater pH on a massive scale.

  5. C_Miner, your professor’s name wasn’t Chuck Brawner, per chance, was it? When I went through UBC Mining Engineering in the 80’s there was a famous rock mechanics prof there by that name. He told us all sorts of stories about how the original contractor had drilled too much and/or used too much explosive, which created fractures much further back than there should have been.

The Wikileaks founder had made arrangements to release his archives to his mainstream media partners and found himself either the victim of a leak or double crossed — you decide which. He is engaged in a dispute with the Guardian’s office for the most sordid of all possible reasons: money. As Vanity Fair puts it:

  22. I’ve been following the merit pay for teachers debate over the last week. I agree with the intent but, knowing how unions and governments operate, I doubt that the definition of merit and the class requirements would be maintained to an acceptable level. As an example, here is a story from Britain that shows what happens when unions and progressive politicians manipulate the education system to artificially increase the grades of students.
    “Only 15 per cent of children get five good grades in traditional subjects at GCSE.The shocking figures – to be released next week – highlight the consequences of a shift toward ‘soft’ courses. A Labour shake-up in 2004 gave pupils more scope to study non-academic GCSE equivalents – and these options have surged in popularity by 3,800 per cent.They include certificates in personal effectiveness, salon services and preparation for working life…
    Labour gave non-academic qualifications – including computer skills and sports leadership – parity with traditional subjects in league tables in 2004. The move helped fuel a damaging collapse in the number of children taking academic courses as schools pushed weaker pupils into other areas to improve their standing in league tables.”
