The vast majority of Bob Dylan’s catalogue of recordings were pulled from YouTube and other such sites about a year ago, but thousands of cover versions of his songs are still available. For example, here’s American singer/actress Julie London’s rendition of Quinn the Eskimo.
The comments are open for your Reader Tips.

“The Governor of Punjab, Salman Taseer, was assassinated earlier today for supporting reforms to Pakistan’s arcane blasphemy laws. It is the most high profile and significant political assassination since former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto was assassinated in 2007.
“Killed by one of his own close protection officers from Pakistan’s Elite Security Force, Taseer was shot in Islamabad’s F6 sector, a wealthy district close to Koshar Market – an area popular with Pakistan’s middle classes and dwindling expat community. The alleged killer, Malik Mumtaz Hussein Qadri, reportedly told officers he did it because ‘the governor described the blasphemy laws as a black law.’ Samaa Televsion in Pakistan…broadcast a statement from Qadri saying ‘Salman Taseer is a blasphemer and this is the punishment for a blasphemer’.
“Taseer incurred the wrath of religious extremists after taking up the case of Asia Bibi, a Pakistani Christian sentenced to death for blasphemy…”
Julie London? Bob Dylan?
I’ll be back!
Hmmm. Not sure.
London’s a better singer, she’s definitely better looking, but I’m not sure her voice, her presentation, do anything to enhance Dylan’s version of his song.
But, thanks, EBD. ‘Food for thought.

High Fidelity…Low Anxiety…I heart it.
Warren the K in the Toronto Sun:
“When you think about Stephen Harper, do you also think ‘taxes’? When you consider Michael Ignatieff, does the word ‘corruption’ spring to mind? How about Jack Layton — ‘in touch’?
“Me neither. None of those words apply to any of those political leaders…..The Grit boss – who has never held power – is somehow corrupt?…Sheesh.
“But, according to Abacus Data, those are just some of the words Canadians associate with Harper, Ignatieff and Layton.”
Nope. That isn’t what the poll was asking. The reason I know this is because WK says so in his next sentence:
“A national poll Abacus did in early December asked nearly 1,400 respondents the following: ‘When you think about the [political party], what three things first come to mind?'”
*Party.*
There’s a world of difference between “When you think about the Liberals, what three things first come to mind?” and “When you think about Michael Ignatieff, what three things first come to mind?” You’re going to get different answers, obviously, to completely different questions.
Btw – and this just cracked me up – later in the same piece he writes:
“Personally, I’m always a bit suspicious of this political branding analysis stuff…”
EBD
I read that on the way to work this morning. Chuckled off and on for most of the day.
I heart that restaurant critic.
Batb (10:33), I thought it was self-evidently a very bad cover version. In retrospect I shouldn’t have deleted (and at the very last second, yet) the original final line, which was “I believe it’s called ‘the law of unintended consequences.‘” I’d put it back in now, but if I did it would make it seem like you have poor reading comprehension skills…

FORGET new year’s resolutions. I am making a new year’s admission. I’m a member of the crappiest generation.
No disrespect intended, but I’m guessing you are too. US comedian Louis C.K. christened the term, pointing out that we live in an amazing world that’s wasted on a generation of spoilt idiots.

The crappiest generation is indeed a mindset, born of hippies, fed by yuppies, milked by wenies and abhorred by meanies.
Just for fun…

Farmer Joe, I sent the Hitler/Wheat Board Youtube video to a number of people. Hope they enjoyed it as much as I did.

To promote the preferred east-side route for Manitoba Hydro’s Bipole III transmission line, a group known as the Bipole III Coalition has been formed to raise public awareness of the issue and hopefully lead to a return to the route originally proposed by Hydro on the east-side of Lake Winnipeg. The present NDP government has instructed Manitoba Hydro to build the Bipole III transmission line down the west-side of the province. There will be substantial additional costs associated with a west-side route versus the shorter, more reliable, safer, and more environmentally friendly east-side route. An east-side route would also impact a smaller number of landowners and existing infrastructure as would bring economic opportunities to east-side communities.
This is one of the most fascinating things I’ve seen in some time: Animated Display of Life Expectancy vs. Income vs. Time
Please don’t let it escape your attention that the higher the income, the higher the life expectancy. Yet another reason to support capitalism over socialism!

Globe and Mail, Tuesday, Jan. 4. Mysterious fire guts heritage building.
http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/national/toronto/mysterious-fire-guts-toronto-heritage-building/article1855861/
I would make the suggestion that Toronto should support property rights instead of “heritage buildings”.
Hardly anybody cares about heritage buildings, so the city might as well not bother. If somebody wants to turn his own property into a tourist atraction or even to rent out space while maintaining it in original condition, no one can argue. But the real purpose of the city getting involved is to impose yet another nuisance interference with business and ownership rights.
On a related note, when “endangered species” are designated, owners who find them on their property tend to kill them immediately and hide the bodies. So much for policies that are supposed to protect.
Globe and Mail, Tuesday, Jan. 4. Pay teachers on merit, says B. C. Liberal leadership candidate Kevin Falcon.
http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/national/british-columbia/pay-bc-teachers-on-merit-kevin-falcon-says/article1856399/
“Susan Lambert, president of the B.C. Teachers’ Federation, said Monday she is appalled by Mr. Falcon’s proposal. ‘It’s a destructive idea that doesn’t bode well for public education,’ she said.” (her diagnosis of the system’s problems amount to “inadequate funding”)
“Annie Kidder, president of Ontario’s People for Education advocacy group, called merit pay ‘a really problematic idea’ that measures performance based on students’ standardized test results. ‘I have a problem with the underlying idea of the notion that if you just pay teachers more, you do better work,’ Ms. Kidder said.”
If People for Education isn’t a front for the teachers’ unions, I’m Barack Obama.
I don’t claim to know how to pick out the bad teachers and I don’t think student test results are necessarily a strong indicator. I never had a particularly bad teacher myself in grade school or public school, and I doubt it’s as big a problem as the critics think it is. But the unions’ attitude, as usual, is over-the-top.
I simply can’t top Ace of Spades HQ‘s own headline:

Re Michelle Antoinette Obama: I see she’s reverting to type. What will the fashionistas say about those pants, let alone her hair? ‘Looks like she just got out of bed — and the food was good in Hawaii.
Thanks, EBD, for sparing me the embarrassment! A few other posters don’t seem to have any trouble with Julie London singing Quinn the Eskimo but they also suggested other Julie London songs in which she shines!

nv53, love this comment from a true socialist who obviously thinks companies are not to be profitable but just fulfilling a social engineering function.
“Too many Corporations employ as FEW people as they possibly can, at wages as low as possible, in as temporary/contingent structures as they can BUY from a receptive Government through inadequate, constantly degraded Labour Laws. The Corporate GREED that is all too common out there is something you seem to APPLAUD, or are you just a mercenary for some bizarre…almost anti-social reason??”

The latest in political correctness idiocy — NewSouth Books plans to release a version of Huckleberry Finn, in a single volume with The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, that replaces the words “nigger” and “injun” with the word “slave.”
http://urbangrounds.com/2011/01/removing-nigger-from-twain/
It begs pondering about the removal of the n-word from all rap songs, or is it the color of the hand that pilots the pen?
Sorry Kate about the post concerning the editing of certain words from Mark Twain’s Adventures of Huckleberry Finn .
I pondered the hypocrisy of editing essential words and their impact to the work with respect to rap music.
The thought was, is it the color of the hand that pilots the pen that legitimizes the work.
Long live Bob Dylan!
– Outspoken anti-Communist (although the Left has “airbrushed” that fact out of its documentaries on the guy — Dylan is in fact the son of Russian-Jewish emigres and hated the Soviets; his real name is “Zimmerman”).
– One time committed evangelical Christian (also “airbrushed” out of Dylan’s history and pooh-poohed by the establishment Left).
This old hippie will always appreciate Dylan for what he always was: anti-establishment libertarian prophet of youth who never cow-towed to any of the elites across the political spectrum.
Sorry Lefties, but Dylan was never a Commie. The greatest poet and bard of our ’60’s generation was never one of yours!
Was in Calgary for Xmas. It appears the CFL bulb has been replaced by new LED that promised 5 years of continuous lighting and less than 2 watts to relace Edison 60W.

Re AtlanticJim at 8:30am – It blew my mind when a few years ago I saw that poverty groups were demanding that a cel phone and monthly package also be declared a basic human right. This, at a time when I didn’t have a cel phone, very much by choice. Little did I know that my rights were being violated daily!!!
Could the proverbial pendulum really be moving back in the right direction?
Here’s a very interesting development out of New Mexico. The governor there has fired all of the members of the “Environmental Improvement Board”, citing, “Unfortunately, the majority of EIB members have made it clear that they are more interested in advancing political ideology than implementing commonsense policies that balance economic growth with responsible stewardship in New Mexico.”
Allan @12:52 The Bipole III line (East vs.West) side of the Lake, should for cost purposes be on the East, eliminates problems of transmission in the narrows (e.g. terrorists) would be readily available if a contract with Ontario Hydro could be concluded. However, it passes over and thru Native territory, and the N.D.P. will not go there!

Ricardo (11:00 am):
Amen to that. Early in Dylan’s career he became repelled by the left’s putative “ownership” of him and his music, and he proceeded to shoved the proverbial heel of his hand in their collective face. But even years later, after “Union Sundown” (“Well it’s sundown on the Union / and what’s made in the USA / Sure was a good idea / ’til greed got in the way“) and “Neighborhood Bully”, which defends Israel in the starkest and, erm, most energetic terms, he is still claimed by some (perhaps pot-addled) baby boomers as “one of them.”
The 60s-spawn who believe we can all build a better world through, erm, communo-leftism apparently failed to notice from the outset that his great “peace” anthem “Blowin’ in the Wind” essentially says “who the hell knows what the answers are?” For years afterwards Peter (or Paul?) would later speak the final line (while Mary and the other guy hummed) as “the answer, my friends, is in you, and me, and in all of us, as long as we continue to fight for social justice and…”
I paraphrase, but it’s pretty close.
On a sad note – I didn’t realize this until yesterday – Denis Dutton, the founder of Arts & Letters Daily, passed away on New Years Eve.
ricardo: “Sorry Lefties, but Dylan was never a Commie.”
That’s for sure and I like him all the more for it.
I’m sure that Joan Baez’s constantly pushing him to be the spokesman for the Left — when he had absolutely no intention of becoming a mascot for the Left, because he didn’t buy into their agenda — had a lot to do with his nastiness towards her and the end of their relationship. She’s still carrying the Leftie torch (‘nice voice but lousy politics), while Bobby keeps singing truth to lies. He’s nobody’s toadie.

“Cold Temperatures Overnight In India Kill Five People”
“Low overnight temperatures in Uttar Pradesh, India, killed five people, raising the number of dead to 41.”
“Despite the efforts of New Delhi officials to convince homeless people to stay in city-run shelters, at least 10 people died of exposure over the past two weeks.
New Delhi had two days of lower-than-normal temperatures. “Tuesday, the low temperature was 39 F and Wednesday’s low was 40 F,” said AccuWeather.com Senior Meteorologist Frank Strait. “There were winds of 5 to 10 mph.”
The average January temperature in New Delhi is 58 F.”

Those stupid socialists obviously don’t realize that it’s by hiring as few people as possible and paying as low wages as possible that the standard of living rises, for the workers as much as for the businessmen, and including for their ingrate selves. One could hire a railroad engineer or two to drive a train of coal from the mines to the port, or hire an army of people to carry it on their backs. Which is more efficient? One standard principle of economics is that wages rise with an increase of capital investment per worker.
The socialists also think that when their system takes over, some kind of magic wand can be waved that will bring prosperity to everyone, except that past instances have brought plenty of misery and death. It’s what the psychiatrists call “magical thinking”. What they don’t realize is that they’ll be dragged down with everybody else.
