The vast majority of Bob Dylan’s catalogue of recordings were pulled from YouTube and other such sites about a year ago, but thousands of cover versions of his songs are still available. For example, here’s American singer/actress Julie London’s rendition of Quinn the Eskimo.

    London’s a better singer, she’s definitely better looking, but I’m not sure her voice, her presentation, do anything to enhance Dylan’s version of his song.

    Nope. That isn’t what the poll was asking. The reason I know this is because WK says so in his next sentence:

    *Party.*
    There’s a world of difference between “When you think about the Liberals, what three things first come to mind?” and “When you think about Michael Ignatieff, what three things first come to mind?” You’re going to get different answers, obviously, to completely different questions.
    Btw – and this just cracked me up – later in the same piece he writes:
    “Personally, I’m always a bit suspicious of this political branding analysis stuff…”

In retrospect I shouldn’t have deleted (and at the very last second, yet) the original final line, which was “I believe it’s called ‘the law of unintended consequences.‘” I’d put it back in now, but if I did it would make it seem like you have poor reading comprehension skills…

There will be substantial additional costs associated with a west-side route versus the shorter, more reliable, safer, and more environmentally friendly east-side route. An east-side route would also impact a smaller number of landowners and existing infrastructure as would bring economic opportunities to east-side communities.

    I would make the suggestion that Toronto should support property rights instead of “heritage buildings”.
    Hardly anybody cares about heritage buildings, so the city might as well not bother. If somebody wants to turn his own property into a tourist atraction or even to rent out space while maintaining it in original condition, no one can argue. But the real purpose of the city getting involved is to impose yet another nuisance interference with business and ownership rights.
    On a related note, when “endangered species” are designated, owners who find them on their property tend to kill them immediately and hide the bodies. So much for policies that are supposed to protect.

    If People for Education isn’t a front for the teachers’ unions, I’m Barack Obama.
    I don’t claim to know how to pick out the bad teachers and I don’t think student test results are necessarily a strong indicator. I never had a particularly bad teacher myself in grade school or public school, and I doubt it’s as big a problem as the critics think it is. But the unions’ attitude, as usual, is over-the-top.

    I pondered the hypocrisy of editing essential words and their impact to the work with respect to rap music.
    The thought was, is it the color of the hand that pilots the pen that legitimizes the work.

    – Outspoken anti-Communist (although the Left has “airbrushed” that fact out of its documentaries on the guy — Dylan is in fact the son of Russian-Jewish emigres and hated the Soviets; his real name is “Zimmerman”).
    – One time committed evangelical Christian (also “airbrushed” out of Dylan’s history and pooh-poohed by the establishment Left).
    This old hippie will always appreciate Dylan for what he always was: anti-establishment libertarian prophet of youth who never cow-towed to any of the elites across the political spectrum.
    Sorry Lefties, but Dylan was never a Commie. The greatest poet and bard of our ’60’s generation was never one of yours!

  37. Re AtlanticJim at 8:30am – It blew my mind when a few years ago I saw that poverty groups were demanding that a cel phone and monthly package also be declared a basic human right. This, at a time when I didn’t have a cel phone, very much by choice. Little did I know that my rights were being violated daily!!!

    Here’s a very interesting development out of New Mexico. The governor there has fired all of the members of the “Environmental Improvement Board”, citing, “Unfortunately, the majority of EIB members have made it clear that they are more interested in advancing political ideology than implementing commonsense policies that balance economic growth with responsible stewardship in New Mexico.”

Allan @12:52 The Bipole III line (East vs.West) side of the Lake, should for cost purposes be on the East, eliminates problems of transmission in the narrows (e.g. terrorists) would be readily available if a contract with Ontario Hydro could be concluded. However, it passes over and thru Native territory, and the N.D.P. will not go there!

Early in Dylan’s career he became repelled by the left’s putative “ownership” of him and his music, and he proceeded to shoved the proverbial heel of his hand in their collective face. But even years later, after “Union Sundown” (“Well it’s sundown on the Union / and what’s made in the USA / Sure was a good idea / ’til greed got in the way“) and “Neighborhood Bully”, which defends Israel in the starkest and, erm, most energetic terms, he is still claimed by some (perhaps pot-addled) baby boomers as “one of them.”
    The 60s-spawn who believe we can all build a better world through, erm, communo-leftism apparently failed to notice from the outset that his great “peace” anthem “Blowin’ in the Wind” essentially says “who the hell knows what the answers are?” For years afterwards Peter (or Paul?) would later speak the final line (while Mary and the other guy hummed) as “the answer, my friends, is in you, and me, and in all of us, as long as we continue to fight for social justice and…”
    I paraphrase, but it’s pretty close.
    On a sad note – I didn’t realize this until yesterday – Denis Dutton, the founder of Arts & Letters Daily, passed away on New Years Eve.

    I’m sure that Joan Baez’s constantly pushing him to be the spokesman for the Left — when he had absolutely no intention of becoming a mascot for the Left, because he didn’t buy into their agenda — had a lot to do with his nastiness towards her and the end of their relationship.     Those stupid socialists obviously don’t realize that it’s by hiring as few people as possible and paying as low wages as possible that the standard of living rises, for the workers as much as for the businessmen, and including for their ingrate selves. One could hire a railroad engineer or two to drive a train of coal from the mines to the port, or hire an army of people to carry it on their backs. Which is more efficient? One standard principle of economics is that wages rise with an increase of capital investment per worker.
    The socialists also think that when their system takes over, some kind of magic wand can be waved that will bring prosperity to everyone, except that past instances have brought plenty of misery and death. It’s what the psychiatrists call “magical thinking”. What they don’t realize is that they’ll be dragged down with everybody else.
