  1. Ha-ha, Kate. Those are called Polar Oranges, and they’re melting.
See what I mean? Alright? Okay?

  2. [ “Given our level of ignorance about what’s going on, we don’t want to compound that with a level of arrogance by saying we know what’s going to happen in a month,” he says.]
Aaaawh come on – Suzuki knows what will happen in 10 years, Gore in 50.

  3. Actually, we spray the crop with water (sprinklers) to coat the fruit in ice. It sounds stupid, but it saves the crop from the freezing temps.

  4. I know we’re experiencing global cooling but this is ridiculous. I’m going to Florida in January and the weather needs to cooperate. Looks like I’ll have to pack a jacket and clothes that I’d never think of taking that far south with me. OTOH, maybe there’ll be better airline ticket prices and no crowds on the beach. Just have to think positive — 2 more hours of sun/day than at my current latitude.

  5. Didn’t you know that ORAGNGES are the staple of the polar bear diet???????
YOU MORONS, POLAR BEARS ARE STARVING BECAUSE OF AGW!!!!!!

  6. Years ago I would keep an eye out for Orchid Island pink grapefruit from Indian River, Florida.
Always more expensive than other brands until the end of season picking rush that began in late March.
Then the hurricanes and colder weather of the past made them seem to be only end of season in Canada.
Then nothing here, mostly shipped to Japan.
    Then none at all.
If you look on Google Earth the grapefruit trees have all been replaced by subdivisions.
    Paved paradise ……………

  7. South Dakota never should have let the Hurricane State steal their Sunshine State nickname.

  8. This happens every so often in Florida and is nothing new. However, this frost may have come earlier in the winter season than usual. Sera might know.

  9. Computer models to predict the ‘weather’ have been around for a lot longer than computer models to predict the ‘climate’. The weather models still can’t accurately predict what will happen tomorrow, yet they expect us to believe that the climate models can accurately predict what will happen in 2100. Are they mad?

  10. Meanwhile Newfoundland has been experiencing spring-like weather – they were golfing on stephenville just two weeks ago. Just saying…

  11. The sun is shining brightly down here in the Sunshine State. It’s just cold. Really, really cold.

  12. That firey ball in the sky has been having vicious storms, could that have anything to do with climate here on earth? This is a question nobody ever asks, of the intelliduncia like Suzuker Gore etal. Gore or Suzuker are so into this SCAM, if they came into their cold mansions they would blame the maids for ecessive farting rather than turn up the thermostat!

  14. Back to the playbook of Gorebulls and Fruit Fly….
AGW causes all extreme weather, because we didn’t have extreme weather before AGW….so saith the doom and gloomers from the church of AGW….

  15. Looking at those ice-coated oranges reminded me of the theme song, sung by Anita Bryant, from that old Orange Growers’ Assoc. orange juice promo campaign, “the Florida Sunshine Tree”. Looks like the oj will come pre-chilled this year.

  16. I’m down in the sunshine state right now and I can tell you it’s cold! Brrr. In 36 years of frequent visits I’ve never seen such a long cold spell.( Been here 2 weeks). Sara is right; They spray the fruit with water to protect it, as crazy as thatsounds.

  17. When water turns to ice it gives off heat – called latent heat. Plants that are soaked with water will linger longer at 32 degrees before dropping further. Oranges covered in ice at 32 degrees may look worse but they are safer than dry oranges whose temperature has plunged to, say 28 degrees. Do I have this right, Sera?

  18. wow the climate really is chanhing and becoming more extreme I wonder if this means that Gore was right ?

  19. What the orange growers are relying on is a thermodynamic property (in this case, of water) called latent heat of fusion. Basically, since water can exist in its solid and liquid form simultaneously ONLY at 32° F, it will stay at that temperature until it is all frozen. So for a short-lived cold snap, this strategy can protect one’s orange trees by having the sprayed-on water freeze essentially instead of the orange. But if it stays below freezing for an extended period, the oranges will freeze, too.

  20. Right, because extreme weather is a perfect argument against climate change :S
If it’s extremely hot somewhere on earth, it MUST be extremely cold somewhere else. Anyone with a basic understanding of global energy/climate balances will know this.

  21. For the slow learners in the back, and that means you, BTJ.
    1. What part of Solar Minimum do you not understand?
    2. If your theory is true then your lot claims the effects will be felt mostly in the polar regions, reducing the temperature differential between polar highs and tropical lows, thus reducing the intensity and frequency of extreme weather events.
Anyone with an understanding of basic physics will know this.

  22. “What part of Solar Minimum do you not understand?”
What does that have to do with ANYTHING!?
“If your theory is true then your lot claims the effects will be felt mostly in the polar regions, reducing the temperature differential between polar highs and tropical lows, thus reducing the intensity and frequency of extreme weather events.”
Where’d you quote this from? Perhaps this would occur in the long run, however, in the immediate higher temperatures in one place means lower temperatures in another.

  23. Turn your eyes to Europe now for the next installment of “Whoops, this Globe is Cooling.”
Big-time cold and snow heading for the UK and Ireland, should blast the CRU out of their slumber (course they’re inside where it’s prob’ly over 10 degrees).

  24. BTJ:
So far as I know, there’s no law of conservation of heat for the planet as a whole. A major volcanic eruption, for example, cools off the entire planet.

  25. I wonder where on earth the ‘climate balance’ “heat” was when Canada was under a mile of ice only 15000 years ago?

  26. “So far as I know, there’s no law of conservation of heat for the planet as a whole. A major volcanic eruption, for example, cools off the entire planet.”
Huh? You obviously don’t have a very good understanding of the issue of climate, and the global energy systems. The amount of energy reaching the earth, in a specific time period, is FIXED. This energy hitting the earth does so UNEVENLY. The Equator gets most of it, the poles get very little. The energy that reaches the Equator doesn’t just stay there, it moves towards the poles. This is the BASIS for global climate, global energy systems, basically why the earth is what it is. Now if somewhere on the earth, for whatever reason, receives higher than normal amounts of energy (heat), somewhere else must be receiving lower than normal amounts of energy (because the total amount in a given time period is FIXED).
A volcanic eruption doesn’t COOL the planet (cooling would imply taking away existing heat), what it does is blocks energy (and therefore heat) from reaching the earth. Turning off your oven doesn’t cool it, it just stops it from heating. The heat that is in the oven at the time you turn it off doesn’t disappear, it spreads through the entire room.

  27. As rabbit quite rightly pointed out, this:
“…however, in the immediate higher temperatures in one place means lower temperatures in another.”
is about the most absurd statement ever made with respect to global warming theory.
In case you hadn’t heard the news, temperatures have been stable for the last 10 years, with a noticeable decline starting in 2008. It’s why the IPCC crowd has been postponing the warnings of catastrophe by about another three decades. It’s called a solar minimum and it’s now about as deep as the Dalton Minimum.

  28. “is about the most absurd statement ever made with respect to global warming theory.”
Please, if you’re going to just blurt out statements without any explanation whatsoever, keep it to yourself.
YOU my friend, just admit it, don’t have a f**king clue about climate, or likely science (biology, chemistry, physics, etc) period.
It is a WELL KNOWN FACT that there is a FIXED amount of energy hitting the earth in a given amount of time, and that this energy is spread across the globe. In case you’re absolutely and utterly ignorant of even the most basic principles…energy cannot be created, nor destroyed.
Here’s a simple example…the earth is a room, this room is partially sealed and has one electrical outlet (representing the sun). There is a heater plugged in, which keeps half the room at 18 degrees C, the other half away from the heater is at 15 degrees (like the tropics and poles). Now, you plug in an air conditioner to with the cool air blowing into the 18 degree half of the room and the warm air blowing into the 15 degree half (an air conditioner does not produce any heat, nor does it store any heat). This lowers the 18 degree half to 17 degrees…what happens to the 15 degree side?

  29. Did you not know South American just came out of one of the coldest winters on record…the severe cold killed dozens of people and thousands of livestock. This has been reported repeatedly on the major MSM and discussed at length during the Globull Warming Beachfest in Cancun. They ruled this is just a glich and Gore said he would not let it happen again. Gore also said the record cold temperatures in Cancun were just a fluke. He says it just meant less cleavage to look at!
Gore also says if we send $100 Billion a year to third world despots this will reduce temperatures and speed up the next ice age.
Suzuki (CBC Fruit Fly Guy) says Canada must meet the Kyoto Accord signed by the Liberals (bill defeated by the Conservative Senators) so we must removed all cars and trucks, ground all planes, shut down all generating plants, etc. to eliminate the 1.8% co2 Canada contributes to Globull Warming. Suzuki also says that if it gets too cold in his mansions in BC with the furnaces shut down he will spend more time in his villa in the south of France! Just keep sending money to his tax free “Foundation”.
Suzuki had no comment regarding the mega tons of REAL pollution, including Mercury, coming over North America in brown clouds from China`s coal fired power plants. It is reported that Power Corp is involved in finacing several hundred plants coming on stream. This means the Liberals must tip toe around the China issue. The AGW crowd including BTJ do not seem to be concerned about REAL pollution, just about how much money can they suck out of the system for their own benifit.

  30. “It’s called a solar minimum and it’s now about as deep as the Dalton Minimum.”
I understand that chief…what you’ve failed to explain is just what in the hell that has to do with ANYTHING. Why are summer temps still above average?

  31. H/T: Big Undead Animals>
    Good news from Hope.
    AGW gooroos in retreat.
The bs is laughabull: “the ice is unlikely to collapse in spectacular fashion, causing hope that,”.
    …-
“No ‘Tipping Point’ for Sea Ice in Polar Bears’ Future
New York Times – Paul Voosen – ‎1 hour ago‎
While Arctic sea ice will continue to retreat under the glare of rising global temperatures, the ice is unlikely to collapse in spectacular fashion, causing hope that, with aggressive greenhouse gas emissions cuts and …
    Hope for polar bears CBC.ca”

  32. BTJ said, “The amount of energy reaching the earth, in a specific time period, is FIXED.”
Really? The amount of energy provided by the sun never changes?

  33. There aren’t other interstellar forces that can affect the amount of energy that reaches the Earth from the sun?

  34. “Really? The amount of energy provided by the sun never changes?”
Are you dull? My statement does not imply the above, it implies that the sun is the only source of energy, and that within a reasonable time frame…say a day…the amount of energy reaching the earth is FIXED.
It doesn’t make a difference to the concept of global energy movement how much sun light reaches earth…the point it that it doesn’t reach it uniformly, that energy cannot be created or destroyed, and so for the arctic to warm, it must cool somewhere else.
