    The Federal(national) government is only permitted to raise revenue from duties and tariffs.

  13. They are not the “Tar” sands, they are the “Oil” sands. Tar is a liquid distilled from coal. Anybody (such as Greenpeace) that uses the word tar when talking about the oil sands is just trying to be detrimental.
    I am sure the American professor would not know the difference.

  15. Perhaps he would be so kind to visit Mr. Goodale’s riding and proclaim that Potash, Oil and Gas and Uranium are not Saskatchewan industries but Canadian industries.
    If there is one national energy industry it’s the off shore oil and gas industry, if you want to talk about Canada’s fair share of resource revenue look East not West as is pretty clear as who owns and controls the resources under the province (the citizens of that province) and who controls that under the sea (Canadians).

    I hear where you are coming from, but “tar” really is just a generic term for a very viscous liquid or very plastic solid, usually of an oily nature.
    Historically, the Athabaska Tar Sands were called exactly that; same as the La Brea Tar Pits in Los Angeles were, and still are called exactly that. Where the Athabaska sands outcrop in the river valley, the oil is oxidized and tar-like, so it’s really not a misnomer.
    “Oil Sand” may be the correct geological and industry nomenclature for the deposit, but “Tar Sand” is a pretty fair descriptor for what the stuff actually looks like, and smells like.
    Whatever. It’s a valuable source of energy, and it should be exploited, and it is, of course. Let’s not fall into the trap of debating nomenclature with the greentards. Simply say, “Tar or Oil, who cares? Both smell like money to me!”

  20. I think you should get off your high horses on this one. It is clear that the oil sands contribute a great deal to Canada’s economic success, not only Alberta’s. A good part of the annual $8,500,000,000 equalization money going out to Quebec is generated by the oil sands’ activity which is precisely why they should be told over and again to respect it rather than trashing like they’ve been doing. So Iggy is not necessarily all wrong just because he is Iggy. (For the record: I live in Alberta).

  23. I’ll give him the benefit of a doubt – if- he realizes his misstatement and corrects himself by saying “the oilsands in Alberta are an albertan industry – an albertan asset – that provides benefits to all canadians.”
    Otherwise, he should be condemned for such imperialist central Canadian comments.

    Factually incorrect.
    The last time Quebec received $8.5 billion dollars was in 2000 – 2001.
    The current number is closer to $15 Billion . . . let’s try & be accurate about the status of the Quebec welfare economy.

  29. I hate incorrect terminology. The are not extracting tar, they are extracting oil. Barring the wordy unconsolidated bituminous sedimentary aggregate, oil sands is closest to being accurate.

    The federal Liberals believe they can gain more votes in Central Canada by demonizing Albertans, than they can earn votes in Alberta. Simple political calculus really.
    Also, earning votes is hard, keeping votes is much simpler. When losing, Liberal leaders are like head coaches in the NFL. They are quickly discarded if they don’t produce results immediately. I believe it’s in the Liberal’s constitution to have a leaders race/convention after a loss; therefore, even if (st)Iffy wanted to, he is not afford the time to earn the votes he surely will not have in Alberta. So, with no hope of winning seats in Alberta, the logically Liberal thing to do is to drum-up support from his Progressive base with cheap rhetoric.
    It’s happened before…
    Do you recall last year at the Calgary Stampede when (st)Iffy said (paraphrasing here) that “the best cowboy hats are made in Montreal”?
    These are blatant and calculated attempts to create a stir, a grasp for attention. (st)Iffy fancies himself Larry Bird to Barak’s Magic Johnson. This is (st)Iffy’s version of Barak’s race/class/gender baiting. Unfortunately, (st)Iffy is no Larry Bird, and the only shots he gets-off are because “People are touching my(his) private parts all day long”.

  33. Alberta’s Premier Stelmac acts like an escapee from the commie NDP. When Ralph retired without calling an election first, Stelmac was ushered into the leadership of the Progressive Con Party making him the defacto Premier.
    His first order of (unelected) business was to give himself and buddies a raise. He then promptly gave we debt free Albertans a 5 billion dollar debt for no reason whatever even though it was against the law to go into debt. His brilliant move of violating the contracts with the oil companies over royalties chased away 70 billion dollars worth of business – to the benefit of Sask.
    When we finally did get an election, I voted Wild Rose – the only conservative party in Alberta.
    I remember the NEP raid on Alberta when smaller companies had to sell off their equipment at ten cents on the dollar at auction. Everyone had the rug pulled out from under them which resulted in several suicides.
    The Wild Rose Party’s Danielle Smith says “Not necessarily separation, but separation if necesary.” Iggy (the Puffin) could make it happen if he were ever to become PM.

  37. Indiana Homez: I agree with you absolutely. The game is always about winning Quebec… and not losing Ontario. Then Alberta and the Prairies, ha, who cares (certainly not the CPC), they’ll vote for the Conservatives no matter what. But I’m just not convinced that Ignatief’s comment had anything to do with that old regional political game this time around. Call me naive, I think he just talked for the country as a whole.

  42. Many of you are missing Ignatieff’s point (and I am a “true blue red neck”).
    The Canada-wide and international benefits are very much wide spread and accrue not only from equalization payments but through sales of industrial products such as steel, wire, pipe, electric motors, and through factory jobs in prefabricating many of the elements, through contractor fees, tradesmen sending home wages, and more. This is particularly true in both Ontario and Quebec and is in addition to equalization.
    Did you know that currently, Ontario earns more from the oil sands than from the auto industry?
    When he agreed to take on his job, poor Ignatieff did not understand the pressures he would be under from the left wing of his party (disgruntled NDP’ers hiding out to gain influence). He is not very left and you can detect that in his arguments and his body language, he made a mistake and must now work it out, I cannot feel sorry for him.
    The “Industry” is Canadian and world-wide, the beneficial ownership is Alberta’s. Be patient, it is only a matter of time and Harper will have changed out the Liberal bureaucrats, judges and senators, then we can go to work.

    That might be why the Liberals don’t hold any seats in Alberta.
    Here in Ontario we are working on reducing them to the 416 area code. Nothing short of famine and/or carpet bombing is going to winkle them out of there.
    Every time I go down to Hogtown I come back swearing we should build a fence around it and not let any of the black clad b@st@rds out.
