  1. McDonalds should simply shutter all their outlets in the city. That would have the effect of putting half the Democrat voting base out of work.

  2. Old: Can I have a happy meal with a boy (or girl) toy?
New: Can I have a happy meal? And can I also purchase a boy (or girl) toy?

  3. If kids are eating these toys and it’s making them fat, then I support the ban on kids toys at McDonald’s.

  4. I guess they’ll have to call it a “McGrumpy Meal” now!

  5. More nonsense from the California fascists. They go about dictating to everyone while they rearrange the deck chairs on the Titanic as it sails full steam into the iceberg called “Bankruptcy”. I guess it keeps their simple minds busy waiting for the collision to take place.
But then what do you expect from a State that elects someone as profoundly stupid as Barbara Boxer?

  6. What a sad travesty! Instead of worrying about content of MSG and sugar substitutes, they regulate fat, carbohydrates and total calories.
This is a by-product of silencing the MSG-sensitive crowd. When we are silenced and abused, we simply shut up and watch the rest suffering and dying. You reap what you saw.

  7. It is highly controversial as to whether McDonalds is unhealthy….usually denounced by the tofu crowd….
There is no shortage of “credentialed” work and experts denouncing soy in the diet….
Japanese are credited with a low incidence of heart disease….as a result of their fish/tofu diet….while their incidence of stroke is epidemic….
This reminds me of Woody Allen’s movie “Sleeper”….now chocolate and coffee are healthfoods….Nighshade family…..peppers(green, red, hot), potatoes, tomatoes are alleged to trigger arthritis….
    I need a drink….

  8. Can anyone find a clip from the 1978 Superman movie where Gene Hackman/Lex Luthor tries to nuke the San Andreas Fault and sink California – one that’s not in Turkish, I mean?

  9. The wisdom of MAD Magazine asks this fundamental question. IS THERE ANYTHING MORE DANGEROUS THAN LIVING?

  10. Watch this one spread to Socialist Ontario, monkey see, monkey do Mcguinty & co will follow suit.
And look out Craker Jack you will be next!

  11. Next on the hit list – MacDonald’s Monopoly. And, not to be left behind, Ontario’s Premier Dad will target Timmy’s Roll-up-the-Rim-to-Win since it also promotes bad eating habits, “No Donuts for You”. Only ethical coffee brewed with mountain fresh spring water and served with a side of wild blueberry tofu-yogurt (hand-picked by noble undocumented workers, of course) will be allowed.
I mean, it is not like this kind of intervention is about health, it’s a muscle flexing exercise to remind people (and business) who’s the boss. Public Awareness campaigns inevitably turns into government legislation. This is often accompanied by promoting/protecting businesses in which the legislators and activists have an investment.

  12. “San” is Spanish for Saint.
Kiddies aren’t fat because of their diet.
They are fat because of inactivity.
California, as the most populous American state, will be dictating health standards to the rest of the nation under ObamaCare.
Pray to Saint Andrew or pray ObamaCare gets repealed.

  13. Those whom the gods wish to destroy they first drive mad. Looking forward to California defaulting.

  14. Methinks that Eric Mar is a bit RACIST to me.He wants to protect the COLORED folks from harm.Sounds a bit Uncle Tom to me.

  15. Erik Larsen: if McDonald’s had a pair, the next thing you’d see in California McD’s would be posters for a new ad campaign: buy a Happy Meal, get a kid’s toy for just a penny! (All proceeds from toy sales go direct to Ronald McDonald House).

  16. The Rotten Ronnies in Sydney (the first one at least) was a good five or six kilometers from my house. A neighbourhood bud and I would walk there every Saturday and have our meal and then walk back. We got the best of both worlds. The grease rocket and the exercise! 40 years later, we can both still see our shoes when we stand up.
Of course, this was the early 70’s and parents thought nothing of 7 and 8 year olds going for 12km hikes for a snack. So long as we were back an hour or so after sunset they were happy….LOL

  17. Haha… this is my favourite theme! Stupid Californians. I like Steyn’s reference on election night about ‘the corpulent, gin-sodden trollops of New York and California.’ Not sure who specifically he was referring to with ‘trollops’, but corpulent and gin-sodden would explain the voting patterns (and basket case financial status) of CA.

  18. MacDonalds should offer a free “toy” for parents with their adult meals. Perhaps throw in a Gadsden flag or other symbol of liberty, too.

  19. Don’t you pay for the toys? I have seen people in the drive through get 5 small drinks and 5 toys. I’m sure McD’s isn’t giving them away. If they sell it separately is it legal? Does the Happy Meal change it’s name to the Dem. meal, add 25% to the price and throw in an apple to throw away?

  20. “I mean, it is not like this kind of intervention is about health,”
    It’s called ‘keeping busy’ LCB.
The day they banned PB&J sandwiches at school was the day I declared WAR on all of the Do-Gooders.

  21. Every time Kate uses that blog title, I can’t help but think of King Julian (Sasha Baron Cohen) in Madagascar. 🙂
Ah the joy of having children…… 🙂

  22. now if they were giving out free CONDOMS….

    Or a needle exchange!!

  23. In related news, San Francisco has also banned bathhouses due to the extreeme health hazards inherent in such establishments. Just kidding. Waddayathink they are nuts?

  24. Maybe Mickey D should make some special toys just for San Francisco . . . . made out of organic tofu !

  25. Is that keeping busy or just busybodies, Indiana?
BTW, wasn’t McD’s the pioneer of the indoor play park. That has to count for something – call it a health offset. So maybe San Fran should mandate that all restaurants with kids menus must have play areas??
In fact, the play area is probably the number 1 reason why parents choose these types of restaurants, not toys. Kids can run around while adults have coffee with other parents. There are also fewer dirty looks from child-free customers (although I did once hear complaints about noise levels from some old duffers who choose to sit inside the kids play area). Family friendly restaurants are few and far between.

  26. This, of course, being the absolutely most important thing that San Francisco should be addressing right now given its current economic plight.

  27. We can make all the jokes we want about California, they deserve it; unfortunately, they don’t have the only food police. It wasn’t too long ago that Calgary City Council sicced the by-law people onto local restaurants over trans fats.
A commenter to the original story mentioned the cost of so-called healthy food. Last year I was in a corner grocer in Vancouver and I decided to throw a $4 jar of almond butter into the basket. Next to it on the shelf was an identical jar except for label color that cost $8. I checked the ingredients. The $4 jar contained “almonds”. The $8 jar contained “organic almonds”.

  28. I could be a wee bit off the mark, but isn’t it a broadcast no-no to direct TV adverts at small children? That’s basically what the toys-with-your-meal is; it comes as no surprise to the rug-rats when Ronald hands over the lolly. That’s why they make mommy take them to McD.’s rather than say, Wendy’s.
What’s the fun in an egg-salad sandwich on brown and a glass of milk?

  29. “they make mommy”
And there lies the problem – children are not the boss. If mommy acted like a mother and not like a slave or BFF, a lot of the problems would go away.

  30. Daniel Ream @ 1144 – you have significantly improved on my comment! That makes perfect sense, and is way better! 🙂

  31. A city ordinance? Ooooh, golly!
Ignore it. Make them sue, them beat them in court. Not even the Nutzo Ninth would climb on board this crazy train.

  32. San Francisco is a haven for more unhealthy practices than the eating of fast foods.
perhaps it was the connotation of happy possibly meaning gay that was so offensive?

  33. “although I did once hear complaints about noise levels from some old duffers who choose to sit inside the kids play area”
When I read this it instantly brought back memories of a less “enlightened” time when non-smokers would sit in the smoking section and complain about the smoke.
In regard to the McDonald’s Happy Meal … does anyone actual believe that the allure of a cheap toy (which is usually disposed of before leaving the parking lot) draws people to McDonald’s? Maybe the kids (and the adults) simply enjoy the food in spite of the constant lecturing from the health police.
