I think Islam is popular among these women because, in short, it puts them in their place and that’s what they want. It gives women who were never comfortable with a career or being independent a politically-correct excuse to opt for a “family values” lifestyle and defer all major decisions to a man.
On the bright side, these women described themselves as “deep thinkers”, “feminists” and Palestinian sympathizers. In other words, they are Progressives. Good News, Progressives destroy everything they touch. Give the ladies about 20 years and they’ll have turned that religion/culture inside out. And, once it’s not just a few foreign girls getting drowned, beheaded and jumping off balconies, the official women’s organizations might get off their lazy butts and rediscover their outrage.
My other curiosity – I hate to be mean – but are these women converts unattractive. I know the ones in the article are cute but, on average, are these ladies beauty-challenged. That and regret over their previous promiscuous, party-girl lifestyle may contribute to their odd decision. I just cannot believe that women who are secure and happy with themselves would be drawn to such a barbaric religion. Someone introduce them to, I don’t know, Buddhism?

a) If there were a real Christian culture left in Britain (I’m agnostic), these women – not the brightest, I intuit – would be able to find some way to live between acting like drunken, drugged-up party sluts and being slaves dressed up in tents.

I’m not a fan of stupid baby names. Mohammad is a common name and a distinctive one at that. It’s a sign of changing demographics more than trendy baby-naming.

You may well have a point there. This certainly describes the three or four professional women in my acquaintance who have converted. In every case, however, the “deferral of all major decisions” has gone along with access to a fairly bottomless cheque-book. Some, but not all of these women are observant on a daily basis. I have seen a couple of them in costume but just as often in the kind of fashionable and well-cut clothing their new husbands now afford them.
Sholud not there be a law that forbids stupid parents punishing their infant boys for the rest of their lives by naming them Mohamed?

Its not a sign of anything. When I was a kid everybody was converting to Buddhism. Shaolin style being the big favorite. I notice a distinct lack of Buddhism being the dominant religion in Canada of late.
Converting to Islam is “edgy” these days. After a little of that, pretty soon something else is going to be edgy. Militant Anglicans maybe, who knows?
