Ha! Toronto’s been doing that for years; the express lanes on the 401 closed from the 400 to the DVP with nothing going on except at the end where one guy’s doing a little bit of work while 5 others watch.
Or, the Bloor Street sidewalk refurbishment – several years in the making and still going strong!

i hate to keep bringing up my recent sabbatical in Espagne but the highways there(in the southern third) are the best i’ve ever seen….ditto the rail system(systems of which i am expert in i might add)
having said that…exactly how they intend to pay off the debt incurred in building them is anybody’s guess….perhaps Germany will step up to the plate ?
Not much different here in Ontario. On Hwy. 115 to cottage country north east of the GTA the highway regularly has one of two southbound (or northbound) lanes closed for 10-15 km during the weekday. Sometimes (but not always) there might be a small crew working on about 30 feet of roadway. The single biggest expense is likely the team that places the pylons each morning and removes them each night.

Were they accompanied by any signage, Kate, announcing the imminent arrival of pre-election Christmas construction turkeys? Are the barrels a Potemkin highway project?

The joke in Minnesoa is we have two seasons, winter and road construction.
Mostly they are skim-coating the roads with a thin layer of asphalt. They pick a cracked section, grind it off and put a couple of inches of new asphalt down. Presto, new road! Your tax dollars hard at work.
Multiply that by half the major highways in the country, that’s a lot of road cones. Its also several hundred billion borrowed from China dollars. But hey, its shovel ready!
Those roads will look great until about 2013, when that skim coat starts to crack and big chunks come out. All over the country wherever there’s frost, there will be big f-in’ chunks of asphalt popping out about 4-5 months after the 2012 election.
Any road engineer types want to back me up on that time line?
In all fairness Kate, don’t they work during the day, while this video was shot at night? And isn’t that freshly paved blacktop, indicating recent work? Furthermore: land formation, sub base, aggregate, paving, shoulders, painting, etc all done by different contractors, sometimes a few days apart. Couldn’t that have happened here? Just sayin’.

Actually, in high traffic urban areas you’re more likely to encounter night crews than day crews. As I said, the barrels went on for miles. Thousands upon thousands of them.
Have to agree with Simon…after working for over a decade in road construction, it is quicker to push the barrels to the side of the road, than to stack and unstack them daily into and out of trucks…..
But we don’t have to look south of the border, to find money being wasted on needless road projects.
Here in Greater Victoria, we have the Town of View Royal spending $7 million (two-thirds funding from senior governments, but who’s counting?) on building bikelanes and sidewalks, and putting utilities underground….while KEEPING the 2 lane feeder route into Victoria.
Saanich is now going to reduce a four lane road to two lanes, with a bike lane on each side instead…….following Esquimalt’s example of a few years ago.
Comrade Gregor of the Fatherland of Vancouver, has authorized close to $4 million to add a dedicated bike lane (with permanent….oops ‘trial’ barricades) which wipes out 4 blocks of parking in the business district of Vancouver….all the while moaning that the City is running a deficit of $20 million.
Our collective governments are verging on insanity with these projects that accomplish nothing but wasting money, and if anything, causing MORE traffic congestion.
You don’t have to be very cynical to figure that the BIG plan is to force us out of our cars, on purpose, without having to pass laws to do so……no, we don’t need Obumble to show us how to waste money, our socialist governments have been setting the example for him for years!

Throwing insults at people is all you have and that’s a pretty pathetic strategy. It’s kinda lost it’s affect.
In southern (rural) Oregon, the barrels have been in the same places on I5 for many years with signs that say “fines double in construction zones”.
This is just revenue enhancement for rural counties.
While doing my part to accelerate AGW this summer, I toured with the motorhome through 8 US States and witnessed much of what’s on this video. THere must have been hundreds of miles of Interstates that had one lane closed by these same barrels and barricades. In some places the weeds in these closed lanes were as much as 3 feet tall. The only good thing about construction zones in the US is that the speed limit is 60 mph!
I could have taken an hour of video just like this. Pretty much every main artery we traveled in Chicago is lined with no-construction barrels.

My opinion is that milling and repaving is a band-aid approach. Nova Scotia was famous for this just prior to an election….
Roads much like buildings require good foundations. The trend I am seeing is ripping up asphalt AND the old 4″ concrete beneath and redoing the roadbead using the crushed concrete as a base for 1′ of reinforced concrete with a top of 4″ of asphalt.
The worst surface is this continuous process of heating–milling and relaying….when this was first used it worked but now the result is clumpy uneven pavement….that separates with frost action or even heavy traffic. I suspect skimping on heat and adding gravel rather than asphalt.
I expect Luke’s hero (the Mau Mau in the White House)will not get to finish his term……impeachment….or civil war as a result of election fraud—-Luke’s followers will try to pull a nationwide Franken given the chance…..

Reminds me of the last time I traveled the Pa Turnpike. Single lane and orange barrels for about 25 miles on the east side of Pittsburgh. Middle of the week, not a holiday, nice weather and not a construction vehicle or worker in sight. My guess was that they store surplus barrels in the middle of the turnpike.
Pennsylvania is always like that.
I wish I had bought stock in a road barrel manufacturing company in ’08.
