Do we (with audio at link)?
Does Canada deserve Mickey I.?/Bobbity’s smooth move
John Robson of the Ottawa Citizen wonders where the Mickster’s brains are at, and why we should even bother to care about winning a (temporary) seat on the UN Security Council…

I still say make a no-name fourth secretary at the New York consulate-general our charge-d’affaires at the UN, and have him phone General Assembly votes in.
Then quit writing cheques.
Oh, one more thing: make the Count the special assistant to the charge-d’affaires, responsible for making the coffee.
I agree with Robson, but most importantly, we don’t need/want Ignatieff, he blew it this time.
Every day that the UN continues to exist, the civilized world is imperiled. Canada should distinguish itself and withdraw from the UN. Ideally, the US should as well. Given that the appetite for the that good idea doesn’t appear to be there (although, I would be interested in seeing the question put to a poll, particularly in the US), then sure, why not play grown up inside the tent and perhaps the seat will be better managed than through an alternative occupant.
Simply stated the UN security council is a war making body attached to the interests of the world bank and IMF.
Wanting a seat on this council is a matter of how much tax revenue you have to spend on costly military misadventures doing the UN’s global social engineering.
I don’t think this UN agenda is what Canada is all about.
Canada in the UN? Whatever.
Since Peason was PM the Liberal Party of Canada has been destroying this nation’s ability to do anything useful as a UN member. With help from the now defunct Progressive Conservatives, I hasten to add.
Teeny weenie Denmark has a bigger military than Canada. Denmark has a better claim to a seat on the UN Security Council. Hell, Pakistan has a better claim. They have nukes!
To see Iggy out there blaming the CPC for something HIS PARTY has had as policy since the 1960’s, while appalling and repugnant, is not even a little bit surprising.
That’s what Liberals are, appallingly repugnant liars.
Luckily the UN is only a waste of tax money. If it was actually important, that would be… bad!
Occam:
Curiosly, it is what Obama’s agenda is all about.
Re: Phantom at 12:11pm – Unfortunately the UN is far more than just a waste of tax money. He11, the IPCC alone has the possibility of installing a supra-national bureaucracy, with taxing and punitive legislative powers, and without any method of opting out. Can’t you just imagine Canada’s oil sands once the UN/IPCC CO2 fanatics gain control? Yikes!
I’m no expert but I’ve read a bit about UN history. It seems that the UN -aside from Soviet obstructionism- was reasonably effective and non-hateful towards Western Civilization from it’s 1945 founding until about the mid 50’s.
At about that point, the UN membership began to swell with third world nations, particularly former colonies. These nations have shown a general streak of envy of and hatred towards Western Democracies and Western Civilization in general. Their actions in the UN have reflected that.
For me, the Zen-like moment of insight clarity about the UN was seeing Colin Powell boo’ed in the General Assembly at one time and Robert Mugabe cheered at another. ‘Nuf said!
It’s one thing to play the slimy liberal before Canadian Liberal Media it’s another to smear this nation by throwing cheap shots at Harper on the international level. Iffy’s contempt for this nation and her people is palatable.
I agree – within Canada there should be vigorous debate on anything, but outside of Canada there should be a united front. Just like a family – fight inside the house, but present a united front to those outside.
catch22, I’m prepared to be wrong about my opinion.
In my defense, Jean Chretien’s Kyoto promises were supposed to cost us a lot of money by now. And they would have, if any Liberals (including Chretien) had been even faintly serious about keeping those promises.
The UN, at this time post-cold war, is strictly smoke and mirrors IMHO. A place for corrupt third world dictators and their cronies to swan about and get free NYC parking.
It does have its serious side though, Rwanda being one. UN can’t really do anything, but they can certainly stop things getting done.
Mark Steyn said something about the mixture of Democracies and Despots at the UN that illustrates that organization perfectly. Loosely quoted, “mix a quart of ice cream and a quart of feces together and see which of those constituants overpowers the other”.
Dave in Pa sums it up well. Most of the UN’s apparatus has become totally useless in any meaningful political sense and is being run by the Pachurri, Strong ET AL crowd to subvert western democracies with the assistance of 3rd world tin pot dictators.
Phantom says it well “That’s what Liberals are, appallingly repugnant liars”.
Harper is supposed to beg and plead for something Canadians don’t need or want!
How many promises, payoffs and outright bribes will it take to secure a seat on this corrupt global government?
They then decide who can speak out against Islam, how much money will wastefully transfer through them to fund world conflicts, and what rights you have in your own country as to freedom of speech and gun ownership (Too name just a tiny fraction of assaults on our sovereignty).
I think the only reason we might want a seat at the UN Security Council is to keep an eye on what the clowns are up to and be in a position to ensure the UN doesn’t interfere in Canadian internal affairs. Other than that, Canada should simply drop out of the gong show called the UN.
The bigger question is whether Canadians, or any other decent people deserve to be subjected to legalized depradation by this nest of thieves, killers, and dictatorships.
Who cares what these criminals call their latest scam, whether it is AGW, or any other name. A scam is a scam.
Much better to close the UN, and emphasize cooperation among non-criminal nations, through voluntary, normal, bilateral relations.
Interesting to see the comments on this article at the Glop and Flail. The commentators over there are the ones we have to worry about. Didn’t fully comprehend the depth of liberal insanity in this country until today, kinda ‘Pollyanna’ of me to think that small “l” liberals might someday finally see the light, now I know there isn’t a chance. CAUTION make sure you have a stiff drink at the ready when you begin reading or a barff bag; whatever works for you!!!
I have the impression that Ignatieff or his handlers just had to say something in opposition to the Government no matter how nonsensical. First, a derisive comment about ignoring the UN for four years, then trolling for a Security Council seat when one comes up. I commented on the newspaper story that ‘ignoring’ to Ignatieff means that Canada has continued to strongly support Israel in oppostition to the UN circus.
Then, to paraphrase, “Canada hasn’t earned a Security Council seat”.
Hmmmmmm. We are playing a lead role in a major UN sanctioned military operation. We are the 7th largest contributor to UN finances.
Seems to me that should get us an automatic appointment to one of the rotating SC seats in every other rotation.
I’ve said on other occasions, these things are actually good news for conservatives. During the summer we heard little from Ignatieff and the CPC slowly fell in the polls as one manufactured scandal after another was trotted out. Now he’s back and we have the registry vote and these comments just this week. I expect the poll numbers to go right back up.
The comments in the Grope & Flail on this article are nauseating. Calling that paper “right wing media” shows the depths of leftist ignorance and bias. Too bad those people get to vote – we really do need an intelligence test to qualify for a ballot. As for Ignatieff, where does one draw the line between sedition and treason?
I say we declare the UN a new nuclear waste disposal site. How bought you?
That or move to Iran.
IMO …. for many decades has been that Canada should stop participating in the UN in any way.
So should any other nation with any self respect.
I am Conservative, by nature, and I would be ASHAMED if Canada were awarded anything by the stinking UN CORRUPTOCRACY.
DRINK TEA!
“We don’t need no stinking Security Council seat”
As a matter of fact, We don’t need no stinking UN.
Canada, US, Japan, Israel, Australia (maybe), NZ(perhaps), Taiwan, (maybe a few others) should form our own alliaince.
Won’t happen of course.
Considering that Iggy comes from a party whose former PM thought it was more important to win a majority after WW2 than making changes to the draft to help prevent Canadians from being killed in the fight against National Socialism, that we should ignore them.
How about a Council of English Speaking People
Talk about an organisation with huge moral and ethical rep, intectual and philosphy, wealth and work ethic, superiority over anything else.
There is a reason why the most common second language in the world is English.
English speaking people are currently responsible for
Any good envirnomental change, sorry D Suzuki

quite alot more than 50% of all Nobel Prizes
Militarily undefeated, any and all locations, an English speaking nation has not been defeated since the 1700’s.
