“International Burn a Koran Day”

Indeed.

“The Bible is the story of a people’s journey out of barbarism.
The Koran is the story of a people’s embrace of it.”

And here’s a poll!
Further thoughts. As I was saying to someone just this morning, instead of whining about it, Petraeus should announce a Koran will be burned in Helmand province every Wednesday – use it the way that these guys do it.
A compromise! International Read Aloud From The Koran Day.

  1. In the spirit of supporting this gutsy fellow I think I’ll print out a few pages of the Koran and burn them on Sept. 11th as well.
The reaction by the media and others should serve as a clear reminder to all that Muslims are indeed achieving their aims.
Think about your kids and what the future holds for them….

  2. wonder what that poll would be if it said burn a bible or a Maple Leaf flag.
The Great Aggrieved Religion is entitled to their entitlement to be treated special.

  3. I see the intellectual heavyweights are now expressing their opinions on this matter:
[HMG Celebrity News] – Lending her voice to the growing chorus of condemnation caused by the plans, Angelina Jolie has denounced a Florida Pastor’s intention to burn the Koran on Saturday’s ninth anniversary of 9/11.
    …
“I have hardly the words; that somebody would do that to somebody’s religious book,” Jolie told reporters while visiting refugees camps in northwest Pakistan, which has been crushed by the floods.

  4. It has been determined that if you are appeasing your enemies you are losing the war. As I posted elsewhere yesterday, I wonder if Eisenhower worried about what the Nazi’s feelings regarding Spike Jones and his cute ditty Der Fuhrer’s Face.

  5. For those who want to print a few pages of this barbaric text to serve as kindling for your first fire of the fall season, here is one link:
    http://www.mideastweb.org/mew-quran.pdf
And here is just one passage from this terrible book that should give you pause:
“There are some who worship other deities besides Allah (pagans), they love them as
they should love Allah, whereas the believers are strong in love for Allah. If those
who are unjust could visualize (the Day of Judgement) when they will see the
chastisement, they would come to know for sure that all powers belong to Allah and
that Allah is stern in retribution.”

  6. Thanks for the link.
As many readers know, to the point of vomiting, I listen to US talk radio all day.
In general, the hosts are anti Koran burning (making the usual noises, either mildly or stridently so) but 7 out of 10 callers are cheering the guy.
They say they know it is stupid yadda yadda but they are JUST FED UP.
Many are mad that the State Dept and a General are lecturing civilians about their 1st amend. rights too.

  7. The poll is bogus. The issue is not “hate crime” or freedom of speech. The issue is about the symbolism of book burning, which is an essentially anti-civilization act. Don’t burn books: shoot Taliban.

  8. “The issue is about the symbolism of book burning, which is an essentially anti-civilization act.”
    ~Ham
Burning “a book” is not an anti-civilization act.
The Koran is an anti-civilization book.
All Korans should be burned, and I mean all of them, to safeguard civilization.

  9. A teaching moment or a conspiracy
The People behind G-Zero… Bloomberg (Jewish), and a so called Muslim (Punk) developer, and Obama, (Punk)… have started something they can’t control.
This does not bode well for Iran…When in your face provocation escalates… the resulting smack down will be a bitch….
    JMHO

  10. Actually Ham, the issue is more about a man who has the guts to poke a stick at a hornets nest so the world can see what’s inside it.
This whole storyline is starting to look awfully similar to the story of the cartoons depicting Allah.
If the Koran-burning preacher backs down, then you should be very afraid, because it will be an indication of just how weak we have become.
And besides all that, this is a lot of *fun*!

  11. “If Muslims can burn the Bible then surely kafir can burn the Koran. Goose-gander….”
    ~Mark Peters
I’ve heard Muslims refer to Christians and Jews as “People of the Book”, meaning the Bible is supposed to be Holy to them too.
The Koran, on the other hand, is nowhere in the Judeo/Christian tradition ever viewed as sacred.

  12. Kathy, glad to hear that 7 out of 10 callers are cheering the guy on.
I bet most of the people who are saying he shouldn’t go ahead haven’t even read one *word* of the Koran.
And besides, it’s a symbolic gesture. It’s not as if he’s burning a museum copy of the Koran.
When the Taliban destroyed the Buddhas of Bamyan that was uncivilized. However burning a few copies of the Koran – I say all the power to the man!

  13. The fact that the book in question is repulsive does not make the act of burning it any less so. My grandfather signed up to fight book burners in WWII and I won’t do anything to dishonour that.
I plan to write a letter of thanks and encouragement to our military serving in Afghanistan on burn a koran day.

  14. Books are not sacrosanct. Had Charles Manson written a book I would take great pleasure in burning it. If someone gave me a copy of Mein Kampf I would cheerfully burn it. Based on its content I view the Qu’ran as being no different. The point is the content of the book not the book itself. Preserving the rantings of an insane murdering, power hungry pedophile just isn’t on my bucket list.

  15. A book is just a delivery mechanism.
An individual who burns a book because they wish to denounce the the message it contains is no different than the individual who stands up in the public square and says so.
This is not state-ordered destruction of books, and therein lies the difference.

For that to be true, Petraus would have had to conspire with Jones.
    I’m not buying.

  17. Much as I agree with these sentiments on principle, I have to note that veterans and active duty soldiers in the field seem to be in general agreement that this is not a helpful idea and we need to keep in mind that by supporting it, we stand willing to increase the level of attacks on NATO soldiers in Afghanistan as well as Americans remaining in Iraq, not to mention other as yet undetermined targets that are sure to be chosen. Those could include any innocent proxy civilians currently in harm’s way (or perhaps not even in harm’s way). So, the action has to be measured in terms of what it achieves minus this predictable additional carnage (unless for some reason not apparent to me, additional carnage is a good thing).
As we can see, no amount of debate or discussion can reach either the Islamic world in general, or the progressive side of politics in our own countries, as to the general state of dysfunction, evil and horror that forms the Islamic cultural universe today. It’s not for a lack of trying and very simple visual aids (9-11 having been replayed on TV almost daily, plus images of other terrorist attacks).
So we might as well accept that minds are made up and just get on with the security aspect that more can agree on, rather than looking at this as an “opportunity” to educate. There is nobody left to educate, the world is divided into the wise and the foolish now — and where have we heard about that? Matthew 24-25 and Revelations 15-16 would make instructive reading.
I guess what I am saying is basically this — it makes little difference whether they burn these Korans or not, it will do little good and possibly considerable harm, but there is evidently no stopping them now, so we’ll just have to live with this as we live with the rest of the mad, chaotic stampede of demons from the abyss until the very last one of them is out, shot down, and peace can prevail in the world. That could take forever unless we get some Help.

  18. Speaking of book-burning, I wonder how may copies of the Satanic Verses have been burned since it was published. Is that a hate crime? I suppose it’s considered by some to be a hate crime even to raise the issue.

  19. “we stand willing to increase the level of attacks on NATO soldiers in Afghanistan as well as Americans remaining in Iraq, not to mention other as yet undetermined targets that are sure to be chosen”
They’re attacking us everywhere as much as they can.
It isn’t that they lack the will or motive, they are only limited by capability.
You aren’t part of the solution when you council appeasement.
Screw them and the camel they rode in on.
I say let’s make them as unwelcome as possible until appeasers get out of the way and stop preventing what needs to be done to safeguard our way of life.

  20. > This is not state-ordered destruction of books,
    > and therein lies the difference.
I guess my personal feeling is that if something feels wrong to me, I shouldn’t be doing it. It doesn’t really matter whether or not the state says I should be doing it.
My rule of thumb these days is that if it’s something I would be uncomfortable defending in front of my wife or child, then it’s something I need to turn my back on.
I support the right of others to dispose of their personal property as they please, but I don’t think you’d find me shaking the hand of someone who proudly burns books. I’m much rather shake the hand of a Canadian soldier who has shot some of the fiends who use the koran as justification for committing murders and acts of terror.

  21. BTW, I just noticed an item in Yahoo Canada news with a headline ‘Canada Condemns Koran-burning plan’. The link is to the CBC. Once again this appears to be the CBC, in their boundless arrogance, claiming to speak for all of Canada, when actually they are only representing the the latte sippers of Toronto.

  22. “I guess my personal feeling is that if something feels wrong to me, I shouldn’t be doing it.”
God save us in spite of the mindless feelings of Liberals.

  23. > God save us in spite of the mindless
    > feelings of Liberals.
These are the feelings of someone who tends towards Judaism, who has many friends who are Jewish, who remembers what happened to Jewish books during the Holocaust, who would dearly love to visit Yad Vashem with his family someday, and who acts accordingly.
I’ve not told YOU what you can or can’t do with your books. That’s your business.

  24. So we enrage the Taliban, they gather to riot and screech in Afghanistan and we shoot them. Frankly I think that’s the solution to ridding Afghanistan of the filthy Taliban maggots.
If the Islamic Supremacists have the Constitutional Right to build a Victory Mosque on GZ then people have the Constitutional right to burn the Koran. I find building a Victory Mosque to terrorism on hallowed ground far more offensive than burning their so called Holy book.

  25. There’s a good column about this by Lorne Gunter in today’s National Post, “A double standard on rage”. (Sorry, I tried to post a link but couldn’t. Maybe someone here knows how to do it.)
One of the commenters suggests “stoning” copies of the Koran rather than burning them. That wouldn’t keep our soldiers any safer, but maybe the symbolism would be less offensive to some.
I’m not sure what the answer is, but appeasement of Muslims—who behave like toddlers with guns, and, coming soon, the atomic bomb—isn’t working, and won’t work.

  26. “I’ve not told YOU what you can or can’t do with your books. That’s your business.”
    ~Sean
Well, “tends towards Judaism”, telling me what I can or can’t do with my books would require an uncharacteristic stand or committment on your part wouldn’t it.
Clearly you don’t “feel” up to it.
I think if I just burned a scrap of paper that had the word ‘Koran’ written on it and maybe even the word ‘Mohammad’ as well, that would be making a similar statement as the people who are burning Korans.
I suppose “stoning” the Koran would be a good idea except for having to buy one in the first place.
One could always stone it over and over and over.

  27. “How unfortunate for all these girls and women that their deaths didn’t come at the hands of Jews — in which case, they’d probably have streets named after them, just like al-Dura.”
I said something very similar on SDA regarding women here in Canada. If you’re going to be the victim of a violent crime; you best hope the perpetrator is a white guy.

  28. Oz: I suggest a compromise. You can burn your Koran while I draw a cartoon of Mohammad burning a Koran as he’s pleasuring a goat and wearing a head dress made of bacon. That work for you?

  29. Sounds fine to me, Sean.
While everyone is going on about the Koran, I think it should be pointed out that Muslims actually get their behavioural cues from the Sunnah which contains the sayings and living habits of Muhammad.
It is the Sunnah which really needs burning because it is the lense by which the Koran is interpreted and applied.
If the copies of the Sunnah were all gone then it would be possible to rehabilitate Muhammad and reform Islam.

  30. When the muzzies want to build a monument atop the site of their burning victory over the west at 9/11 ground zero it is all about “protecting and promoting the constitutional rights afforded to all Americans”. Being sensitive to the families of the innocent murdered civilians and doing the “right thing” need not be taken into consideration whatsoever.
When a religious oddball wants to exercise his constitutional right to burn a co-ran to protest the daily barbarism that takes place because of that islamic text, the leftards want him censored and jailed for a hate crime. American Constitution notwithstanding, doing what the leftards have decided is the “wrong thing” is clearly a hate crime and must be stopped. Ignorant, illogical hypocrites that they are the leftards cannot see the inconsistency of arguing both sides of the same issue.

  31. Burning any religious text might seem abhorrent but do remember that fanatics were born angry and need very little provocation to murder and bomb, that no one would care if a Christian symbol was desecrated (indeed, how many Buddha statues do you see in stores? Isn’t Buddha the Benevolent now Buddha the Trendy?) and that Christians and their places of worship and symbols are desecrated by the same people who whine now. How ironic that Christians will come to their aid whenever it is needed.

  32. Well if religious tolerance were the order of the day – The Dome of the Rock Mosque would be a Jewish temple. The Hagia Sophia would be a Christian Church, the Buddha statues in Afghanistan would still be evident, the twin towers would still be standing and there would be no mention of the GZ Mosque.
Trying to appease your enemy means you’re losing the war.

  33. “This is not state-ordered destruction of books, and therein lies the difference.”
Kate nailed it. This isn’t the 1930s, and there is no risk of knowledge being lost in the electronic era. I could burn all of my CD’s and not have lost any music.
It seems that the political strategy moving forward is: blame the book burning for any escalating violence. Coincidentally, the American’s have withdrawn combat troops from Iraq; though I doubt that will have any bearing on things.
What I find interesting, is that so many politicians and Generals feel it’s necessary to persuade Mr.Jones not to hold his tasteless event. I suspect that many Progressives feel he should be legally sanctioned; all for the sake of the troops of course. It’s interesting because I don’t recall the same persuasive levers being pulled, for the sake of the troops, in the last 15 years while Progressives attempt(ed) to destabilize the war movement at every opportunity(ex. ACLU). What’s changed? Why is this obstacle so much more damaging than those erected in the past by Progressives? Are we not doing our part to destabilize this Imperialistic war? Something is fishy here!
So as by-proxy victims, liberal and Progressive secularists contort themselves into positions of disgust and empathy; because one religious zealot pi$$es of a bunch off religious zealots. Not just pi$$es them off, but pi$$es them off by burning a “holy” book. Seriously?
You know it’s reality, because the knobs in Hollywood could never write this stuff. Me, I’ll be at home with my beer and popcorn watching Reality TV’s version of Circ du Soleil.
And football of course. Go Chiefs Go!

  34. These are the feelings of someone who tends towards Judaism, who has many friends who are Jewish … .
So bloody what, Sean. No one is more Judeaophilic than me, but frankly I’ve just about had it up to here with the Jewicidal Jews. For cry’s sake even “hard right” Bibi is participating in the sham “peace process” just after 4 of his citizens have been murdered by Hamas, and after Abbas speaks honestly saying he will never recognize Israel, and will make no concessions whatsoever. Period.
I think the Burn the Koran Day is dumb but I like it! I also liked the movie Dumb and Dumber which I saw in a motel once.
Screw Patreus telling Americans how to behave: he’s sounding like any other PC-addled government employee. In a more robust age, he’d be keen on this believing it could be a good lure to get these medieval madmen out in force for mowing down.
In fact wasn’t that one of the justifications of the Iraq War: fly paper for the al Queda, who, let’s face it, weren’t really in Iraq in any meaningful numbers?
Muslims have got to be de-sensitized. How about a weekly Friday afternoon Koran burn.

  35. “Dumb and Dumber which I saw in a motel once”
Hey! I think I know the same sisters, different motel no doubt………

  36. Just to be clear…
    1. I find the burning of ANY book to be revolting, mainly because of historical precedents that are important to me. It’s a personal belief and — the CHRC notwithstanding — we’re still allowed to hold those, right?
    2. I personally believe in standing up to militant Islam, but I’ll go about it my own way, thank you.
    3. My personal view on the war in Afghanistan? Pull out the troops and send in the nukes. Speaking as a gardener I know full well that a tree badly bent never grows straight. Sometimes you have to uproot something twisted so that something healthier can be planted. Horrible, but true.
My 2 cents. I’ve said my piece and I’ll move on.

  37. The BEST thing this does is highlight how the MSM and most politicians will defend the Bible-burners right to ‘free speech’, but howl against this action when it’s NOT the Bible.

  38. Now let me get this straight. Islam can destroy the Buddist monuments some 1500 years old in Afghanistan, they can burn a young girl’s face with acid as in today National Post article including a father raping and impregnating his daughter who is killed by her brother for bringing shame on the family, they can burn and kill Coptic Christians – destroying their churches in Egypt, behead Christian children in Thailand, kill 13 American soldiers in Fort Hood, destroy Christian churches in Indonesia, refuse any other religion entrance to their countries and on and on yet if someone in the West burns just one of their book of death all hell will break loose.
    Have I got it right…

  39. Indiana Homez at 3:12 PM
There is something fishy about all of this.
What I mean is,, how did this non event (it hasn’t happened yet) by a mere 35 obscure people in Florida make it this big as a news item? Why does Petraeus have to make a preemptive declaration on a domestic issue? I know, he got told to by his CinC.
This just stinks of a lame diversion by the Olameya regime to divert attention from their dismal polling numbers. Its a self manufactured crisis to isolate the guns and bible voting block.
Its disgusting to see Petraeus name connected to this. He’s a general tasked with securing Afstan, not getting in the middle of a constitutional debate on the rights of free speech.
Its my hope that all of the MSM will have to show images of these Koran burnings with the same zeal they show any time an American flag is being burned.

  40. How about we just kill all Mooslums and save the Koran as a reminder of how evil Islam is?
…can’t wait until the retribution begins…and it will begin on the next big strike…

  41. Many of the self same people asserting burning a Koran is akin to a hate crime would laugh and dance if we Christians were removed from the public square or the political landscape. Funny how they never afford us their empathy or concern, where were these hypocrites when Christians were being persecuted by the various HRCs?
