Reader Tips 29 Comments

In 1934 American songwriter Cole Porter’s stage musical Anything Goes made it’s official debut in New York City. The production had a long and successful run, and several of the songs, including I Get A Kick Out Of You, remain well-known standards to this day. Tonight’s amusement en route to the Tips is a recording of Cole Porter himself singing the title song, Anything Goes. (Lyrics here.)

    “The emails dictate that former CDLE unemployment insurance director Mike Cullen demanded ‘Work Order 51662’ be given top priority within the department. Completion of the work order would mean various questions asked of someone filing for unemployment regarding citizenship would effectively be ignored by a computer system.”

    This – this specific, exact version – is the only song I’ve ever enjoyed having stuck in my head for a month.
    (Not to be too ghoulish, but I love Billie’s voice at this precise stage in its disintigration. The dragging, grainy cigarettes-and-gin quality is still intriguing rather than wince-making.)

    When you see the sheer number of people involved, you realize that we’re pretty lucky here. We get the Guergis non-affair, or the Cadman sham. The last real crime I remember an MP involved in was Svend’s light fingers, but I could be corrected on that score.

    Rep. Ed Markey (D-Mass.) suggested a novel use Saturday for a 100-square-mile ice sheet that has broken off Greenland.
    “An iceberg four times the size of Manhattan has broken off Greenland, creating plenty of room for global warming deniers to start their own country,” Markey said in a statement. “So far, 2010 has been the hottest year on record, and scientists agree arctic ice is a canary in a coal mine that provides clear warnings on climate.”
    Some scientists have attributed the breaking off of the ice sheet to abnormally warm temperatures this year.
    Markey, who chairs the Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming, co-authored the House version of the climate change bill that’s currently stalled in the Senate.
    He said it was “unclear how many giant blocks of ice it will take to break the block of Republican climate deniers in the US Senate who continue hold this critical clean energy and climate legislation hostage.””

  29. Following brain surgery Friday, the 76 year old Cretin was advised to refrain from sitting down for a week to prevent complications related to the procedure…..
    Asked for comment, le Cretin responded: ‘I dunno, I had dis hurt in my ‘ead, so dey cut it open to examine my brains, but dey couldn’t find anyting. I tink I’ll be good as new in no flat time!’
