When I was a young lad of 17 my mother went through a phase of baking bread. It was so tempting and delicious I would sit down and eat an entire loaf with bread and jam.
….butter and jam.
Luckily my parents owned a restaurant, feeding four boys was no easy task. My mother had to cook four chickens with all the trimmings, we were all extremely active in sports plus we worked on our grandparent’s farm and in the restaurant
Ferocious Slavic appetite and an over abundance of food. We had to eat everything on our plate as some kid was starving in Korea, just like today.
Cabbage rolls and coffee anyone?

When asked about his parents’ attitude to his joining the airforce, my ex told the psych interviewers that his parents would be glad for him to join the military because they were finding it hard to feed him….
The RAAF psychs didn’t get the joke.
After I left for RMC 25 yrs ago, my dad mentioned to me one day that he could afford to send both my sisters to university.
Studies of this nature simply confirm Captain Capitalism’s argument that ‘soft’ degrees like psych/soc etc add no value to the economy. As Kate suggests, it’s patently obvious that boys eat more than girls and we shouldn’t need people with lots of abbreviations after their name to tell us that. Especially if there’s any form of government grant attached to it.
One might undertake a follow-up study on the amounts eaten by the boy-friends of teen-age girls when visiting. The grant could help defray some of the expenses of nacho chips and Coca-Cola.
The question is: how and where do you get the money to conduct these so-called “studies”?
Is there a menu somewhere?
My husband and I are so relieved to find out, finally, the cause of our empty pocketbooks! Its the groceries for the six boys! And I thought it was the gas for Mom’s taxi!
they could be eaten out of house and home
But the cheap food policy makes that concern irrelevant, does it not?
i can still hear my mom shouting from the other end of the house…”get out of that fridge!”
I remember being hungry from, oh, about age 13 until 26 or 27. Every waking hour. (Exception: Thanksgivings, when having third helpings made me feel full for an hour or two. I still remember those Thanksgivings with considerable pleasure.)
All that eating didn’t make me obese, or even overweight. At the end of the time, I weighed about 130 pounds, though I am about 5′ 11”. I suppose working on a farm for much of that period helped make me hungry — and helped keep my weight down
Pok raises a valid point. It is clear that no one conducts these “studies” out of the goodness of their heart, and I suspect they get a nice hefty sum. So the question is who funds these ridiculous so-called studies? Again I have a feeling that we, the tax payers, do through some government grant. If so, it would be worthwhile in my opinion to expose it.

========================
At our house it was “don’t stand there with the door open!”
Somehow there was never anything “good” in there, no matter how hard we looked.
I weighed a hefty 125 lbs when I joined the RCAF at the ripe old age of 18. After 12 weeks of basic training I was up to 142 lbs, so I certainly ate my parents’ taxes worth. Could there be a study to determine the risk of frostbite to teenage boys who stand with their heads in the freezer compartment? I know that opening and closing a fridge door is a major source of exercise, so that should be studied too.
Well they raised up a son who could eat up his weight in groceries.
Named him after a man of the cloth.
Called him Amos Moses.
I believe there is a prize for such “research”; the Ig Nobel prize:

The surest sign is when you still cook as if you have a teen male and you find a fridge full of leftovers.
Ma raised three boys (and a girl) and for years after she still cooked to feed an army. Just mom & pop, a full fridge and a giant freezer that you couldn’t fit an extra ice cube into for years after we all left.
I’ve often joked about the things you can get a man or teen boy to do for pizza or a sandwich. Promise a few beers and most dudes will perform back-breaking labour for hours on their day-off with a smile on their faces.
My wife and I have often spoke of how we’re thankful that we don’t have boys for precisely this reason.
My mom used to buy lots of stuff my brother and I didn’t like. A jumbo box of plain Corn Flakes would last forever, and we could never b@tch that there was no cereal. Being a Food-Nazi was one of my mom’s primary responsibilities.
Also, I’d fully support a tax payer funded study as to why my brother and I weren’t aloud to use the main upstairs bathroom either. No such rules applied to my sister.
My 9 year old would enjoy the challenge of the 2000 calorie lunch. Right now he’s perfectly capable of polishing off a round of Brie and then he hits the mozzarella block. A cheese eating surrender monkey indeed. The hormones are about to kick in and I suggested to my sweetie that she turn up but not cut the hems on his jeans.
Two quarts of milk and two dozen chocolate chip cookies was a regular home from school snack when I was growing up. My brother easily topped that but he was a UBC 1st division rugby prop so bulk was good.
I used to be astonished at the silly things which were funded. No more.
I am waiting for the study which confirms that when they are not eating, teen aged boys have been know to think about sex. (Actually, as I recall, while I was eating was a perfectly good time to think about sex…still is.)

yes but it all pales compared to the $1,100,000,000 wasted on security for the G8/20. and speaking of sucking on teats, any chance some of that money winds up back in Conservative election funds? kinda like the Lieberal Adscam?
The catering contractors for fire fighter camps in B.C. have to guarantee a daily menu of at least 5000 calories. Those boys (and girls) can eat!
I am glad to inform everyone that my son and all my grandsons have appetites just like their grampa. My mother described it as ” Throwing groceries into a garbage can”. LOL.
Hate to point out the obvious,
If western nations stopped giving so much food aid to third world nations and encouraged them to grow their own, there would be plenty of food for 4 child families in the US and elsewhere (At competitive prices).
Wonder why your milk costs are increasing so much lately?

China a traditionally lactose intolerant nation has found a taste for western dairy. With almost 2 billion cheese induced salivating mouths that are becoming economically independent, we are now competing for more than just natural resources.
No aid food or otherwise will be forthcoming from China or India to the African hungry. Quite the opposite – We still continue to give aid to both China and India because regardless of their prosperity they are non white nations, and we will continue to feed Africa forever. They will not feed their own starving, but many haughtily enjoy driving Rolls Royce’s to work in Mumbai and Beijing. Our food costs will continue to skyrocket and the Liberal elite will continue to tell us that we are having too many teenaged boys……………
Never wanted kids but lived with a stepson during my first marriage. Would get home from work only to find out he’d cooked up the meat defrosting in the freezer and eaten it as well. He’d drink a quart of milk in one gulp and put the empty carton back in the fridge. I definitey do not miss the little bastard. This marriage’s stepdaughter hardly eats at all, no meat to speak of AND she voted for teleprompter jesus. That is why I chose Corvettes over kids.
