Reader Tips

Welcome to Reader Tips. Tonight’s music is a song about exuberantly reckless driving in the fifties era, back when the typically boat-like and seatbelt-less cars were designed for pleasure and not safety. Even though the singer describes speeding drunkenly down mountainsides at night, in the rain, and passing other cars on blind corners, what sounds like a cautionary tale has little or no effect on his own driving habits: when he requests plasma from his hospital bed he’s just a hip daddy-o asking to be primed up for another bout of driving.
It’s to laugh. Here’s Nervous Norvus’ 1956 novelty song Transfusion.

  1. Stu Tarlow says “Don’t be fooled by Obama’s ‘incompetence'”:
“It is a tremendous mistake to think that the disaster in the Gulf of Mexico will help convince Americans of Barack Obama’s incompetence. Obama’s true agenda is so insidious that even his inability to handle a crisis serves his greater strategy.
“And that strategy has a name: it is the Cloward-Piven Strategy. Named for the two Leftist sociology professors who formulated it, its purpose is to bring about the demise of capitalism by overloading the system, largely by making more people desperate and dependent on the government.
“Thus, Cloward-Piven’s goals are served by more and more aliens flooding across the border and filling jails, emergency rooms and welfare rolls. It is also served by the mortgage crisis; in fact, Professors Cloward and Piven were the creators of ACORN (Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now), which helped pressure banks to implement the lending policies that precipitated that crisis. But Cloward-Piven seeks a financial crisis far wider-ranging and more encompassing than a mere mortgage meltdown.”

  2. Once again our anglo and French members of the National Assembly are doing nothing to defend English rights. The only people, ironically, to vote against the new version of Bill 103 which further tightens the access to English schools were members of the Parti Quebecois (because the bill was not restrictive enough!).
“Jacques-Cartier MNA Geoff Kelley and D’Arcy McGee MNA Lawrence Bergman said that despite criticism that the bill does nothing to help the English public school system, the Bill 103 process had nothing to do with that issue or fundamental rights.”
    Yeah, right.

  3. I wasn’t even born yet, Louise. But yes, I’ve been dating myself for a couple of years now. Don’t rub it in.

Ha, ha. Haven’t heard that since, well, 1956.

  8. Like you, Louise, I was a first grader in 1956 but I remember the heady 1950’s as a awed and inspired onlooker. My dashing young uncles drove fast cars and one had an airplane – he used to take us kids for rides when he spayed DDT on the crops; we loved flying through the fog!! He is over 80 now but he still ranches and rides his herd himself. He gave up his airplane a few years ago. All of us loved speed and power and high risk was not very much of a consideration when contrasted with the thrill of burning tires and speed. The WWII vets that were the adults in my youth were used to risk – they called a panty waist a panty waist and no young men wanted in that category. Us kids just went along for the ride! I miss the confidence and the daring of those young men that were one generation older than me. This song is the epitome of that devil-may-care confidence – ‘just give me a hit of blood and I’m outta here!’

  9. Those young men would have never, ever been seen dead or alive, in a ‘Smart’ car!

  10. EBD – re Cloward Piven. Frances Fox Piven was born in Calgary. Piven was awful in the “Free to Choose” documentary by Milton Friedman. Re Calgary birth – so sorry!
PS – it’s always interesting to ask your spawn whom they would vote for. The answer so far – “The Green Party”.
I have a lot of work to do.

“The men, identified as 20-year-old Mohamed Hamoud Alessa and 26-year-old Carlos Eduardo Almonte, were taken into custody by FBI agents and others at J.F.K. International Airport outside New York City. They were set to take separate flights to Egypt and then make their way to Somalia, where an Al Qaeda-linked group known as al-Shabaab has been warring with the nation’s fledgling transitional government.”
    …
Federal authorities have been watching Alessa and Almonte since 2006, when the men’s unspecified “internet activity” led the New York Police Department to launch an investigation, ultimately dubbed “Operation Arabian Knight.”
    …
“The FBI and others had the two men under surveillance for a significant amount of time, with one official calling the investigation “well organized.””

“The men have been charged with terrorism-related offenses and will appear in a Newark, N.J., federal court on Monday. In such cases, suspects are often charged with “conspiracy to provide material support to a terrorist organization.”

    “*Why Robespierre Chose Terror
    John Kekes
The lessons of the first totalitarian revolution
The American attitude toward the French Revolution has been generally favorable—naturally enough for a nation itself born in revolution. But as revolutions go, the French one in 1789 was among the worst. True, in the name of liberty, equality, and fraternity, it overthrew a corrupt regime. Yet what these fine ideals led to was, first, the Terror and mass murder in France, and then Napoleon and his wars, which took hundreds of thousands of lives in Europe and Russia. After this pointless slaughter came the restoration of the same corrupt regime that the Revolution overthrew. Aside from immense suffering, the upheaval achieved nothing.
Leading the betrayal of the Revolution’s initial ideals and its transformation into a murderous ideological tyranny was Maximilien Robespierre, a monster who set up a system expressly aimed at killing thousands of innocents. He knew exactly what he was doing, meant to do it, and believed he was right to do it. He is the prototype of a particularly odious kind of evildoer: the ideologue who believes that reason and morality are on the side of his butcheries. Lenin, Stalin, Hitler, Mao, and Pol Pot are of the same mold. They are the characteristic scourges of humanity in modern times, but Robespierre has a good claim to being the first. Understanding his motives and rationale deepens our understanding of the worst horrors of the recent past and those that may lurk in the future.
Historians distinguish three phases of the French Revolution.”

  15. Lest We Forget.

    “Canada Remembers D-Day
    OTTAWA, ONTARIO–(Marketwire –
June 6, 2010) – The Honourable Jean-Pierre Blackburn, Minister of Veterans Affairs and Minister of State (Agriculture), issued the following statement today regarding the 66th anniversary of D-Day.
“On June 6, 1944, 15,000 Canadian forces from land, air and sea came together on the beaches of Normandy to join in the Allied invasion of occupied France. D-Day, and the campaign that followed, would signal the beginning of the end of the Second World War.
The triumph at D-Day and the Battle of Normandy, however, was not without sacrifice. Of the 90,000 Canadians and Newfoundlanders who served in the Battle of Normandy, 5,000 would lay down their lives defending freedom, democracy and the rule of law.
The First Sunday in June is Canadian Forces Day, a day dedicated to honoring the contributions of those who serve, both at home and abroad. It is fitting that this year Canadian Forces Day also falls on June 6, because the values our military men and women continue to defend are the same as those our Veterans fought for on the beaches of Normandy so many years ago.
Canada remembers its heroes—we will pay tribute to their legacy and honour those who continue to serve. The freedoms we enjoy today are because of them and we owe it to them to remember. Lest we forget.””

Allen tells CNN’s “State of the Union” that oil company BP needs to understand that it must finish drilling a relief well or quickly cap or kill the leaking the well.
He calls the spill “an insidious enemy that’s attacking our shores” and “holding the Gulf hostage.””

  18. Maz2, Time Magazine, the ones that brought us the Koran down the toilet lie, is on the auctioneers block, too. Good riddance.
I read about it yesterday and a potential buyer wants to turn it into a “right wing” rag, but I’m betting even that won’t save it. It’s been losing buckets of money, even though on of its principal competitors went belly up a year ago. Print on paper is in it’s sunset phase thanks largely to bloggers and video utilities like YouTube.

  19. What can one say about this?
A person going to university for 4-5 years borrowing money the person does not have, NOT KNOWING WHAT IS PERSON GOING TO DO AFTER FINISHING the school with useless degree. The whole country may need about 5 of them for no other reason than to teach others to acquire the same useless degree.
On the other hand, a person that is energetic, not waiting for a job by some miracle, can make a good living by own initiative. After all a person is wise by now, one would think.
The article is not necessarily about that subject, nonetheless is illustrative of the waste of talent.
Glenn Reynolds: Higher education’s bubble is about to burst
    By: Glenn Harlan Reynolds
A New York Times profile last week described Courtney Munna, a 26-year-old graduate of New York University with nearly $100,000 in student loan debt — debt that her degree in Religious and Women’s Studies did not equip her to repay. Payments on the debt are about $700 per month, equivalent to a respectable house payment, and a major bite on her monthly income of $2,300 as a photographer’s assistant earning an hourly wage.
