  12. Thanks Vitruvius for the link to my favorite band of that era until I discovered Hendrix. Wore out my Wheels of Fire album in high school and one of my unrealized life goals was to play bass as well as Jack Bruce.
    Photography is a tad odd and, given the era, likely there’s a simple psychopharmacologic explanation for focusing on Ginger Baker as Eric Clapton does his lead solo. Even despite the photography a great piece of music.

  15. Some additional preliminary information on the cause of the Deepwater Horizon blowout has now become available from the investigation now being conducted. The following is from the CBC report, “Gas bubble triggered oil rig blast” dated yesterday:

    […] was triggered by a bubble of methane gas that escaped from the well and shot up the drill column, according to interviews with rig workers conducted during BP’s internal investigation. The bubble expanded quickly as it burst through several seals and barriers before exploding, according to workers. […] the rig was being converted from an exploration well to a production well. As the workers removed pressure from the drilling column and introduced heat to set the cement seal around the wellhead, the chemical reaction created heat, destabilizing the seal and allowing a gas bubble to form inside the pipe.

    Deep beneath the seafloor, methane gas is in a slushy, crystalline form. But as the bubble rose up the drill column from the high-pressure environs of the deep to the less pressurized shallows, it intensified and grew, breaking through various safety barriers, the interviews said. “A small bubble becomes a really big bubble,” Bea said. “So the expanding bubble becomes like a cannon shooting the gas into your face.” Up on the rig, the first thing workers noticed was the seawater in the drill column suddenly shooting back at them, rocketing 240 feet in the air.     This is not the 1rst time you have done this, Ya sure i may add my comment, However Many Others do also with no Deletion. i have been a consistent contributor to sda for what 4,5,6yrs? And never have had complaints before Do you think iam a Liberal Troll?
    So why? have my contributions been removed, I might also add that many of my contributions have been appreciated by many of the reg bloggers, that have also been regulars on here as long as i.
    If mine are no longer appreciated then fine i will more on, But not before i give my opinion as that is the way i was taught.
    What are you judge/jury & hangman?
    One more thing maybe you should also consult the blogs creator/Host who has not had a problem with my postings over the yrs. And had No problem accepting my cheque when in trouble.

  18. It’s BP’s analysis, Cal. Methane contained in the compound stream at high pressure in the well piping can easily exist in a three-phase slurry form. Add some heat, convert some to gas, push it to lower depth, decreases pressure, converts more to gas, pushes to lower depth, decreases pressure, et cetera. I don’t like the CBC any more than you, Cal, but the report I linked to is one of their rare good ones and is better than the other ones I’ve found on these new results this morning. If you can find a better version or provide proper refutation, I would be most interested in reading about it via the link you post.

    I have to say that what’s happened to the entire “Tips” thing is very sad and disappointing.

  26. It is getting to the point where I don’t bother with Readers Tips anymore. I said to myself that as only an occasional poster that I wouldn’t comment on how the way things are run in this particular feature on SDA. I am more that willing to follow any rules that make the running of this site easier and by no means am I against deleting posts that are not the definition of a reader’s tip.
    Vitruvius I know it is not an easy job moderating for instance I have a fellow on my form who says I am being politically correct and denying him his right to free speech because I won’t let him use the “N’ word. So I know full well you can’t please everybody.
    However deleting some posts as not being a readers tip and letting posts stand that say “Good selection tonight Vit.” or ” I have always enjoyed so and so they are one of my favorite bands.” How can they be considered a readers tip?
    Now for my readers tip. Please be consistent.

  27. I have never removed any comment for spelling errors, or for punctuation mistakes, or for disagreeing with me, BCer. The reasons for attempting to adequately maintain the value proposition of Reader Tips have been properly explained above and on numerous previous occasions, as has the fact that Kate has agreed this situation. If the SDA community is not interested in maintaining the value proposition of Reader Tips, then I am not interested in accepting the role of managing Reader Tips. It’s no skin off my nose; it’s up to you.

As has been explained on numerous occasions here before, Largs and Soccermom, in addition to legitimate Reader Tips per se, (1) comments on said Reader Tips are acceptable here, as long as they don’t become extended debates that undermine the single to noise ratio in Reader Tips, and (2) the opening Late Nite Radio show is no more or less than a “seed” reader tip as was determined by popular consensus here at SDA almost two years ago.

    “When drilling down a couple of miles, pockets of oil/gas are encountered(the objective) that are under horrendous pressure – possibly thousands of psi.
    A heavy mud slurry is pumped down the center of the drill pipe and allowed to flow up between the outside of the drill pipe and the wall of the hole. (It also brings up the cuttings)
    This two mile or so high stack of mud can easily contain the pressure below – unless the mud becomes too foamy. If it does, drilling is stopped while the mud is recirculated through the settling pond until the mud is less foamy.
    But this one time they waited too long and the foamy mud could not hold the pressure. Out came the two miles of drill pipe and they had what looked like a pile of spaghetti !! There was he!! to pay.”

    Much as other’s do on here, I do not have time to put up the actual http:/// crap, the person reading my tip can google the article or find it at borque, ctv,cbc or whomever.
    As they can also choose to either go & read the article or not.
    If you are saying that there are copyright laws re MSM online then i believe that debate has been hashed over in the courts before since the creation of the internet. If you say also that iam breaking Copyright Laws then those said laws should be posted Under the Readers Tips for all to see & obey.
    Now i have a Question for You.
    Are you paying Socan? for all of your musical postings?
    If not, then if anyone is breaking a copyright laws Sir, it is You!

Now, if you can’t be bothered to put in the link to the material you are quoting from, when you have it right there at your fingertips when you are quoting from the article, but you expect each and every person who may be interested in said article to find it themselves, then your comment does not meet the requirements for Reader Tips.

    Some good points on how regulation has shielded our financial market from meltdowns elsewhere, though not an issue IMO on mergers. Didn’t particularly like the “if parts of eastern Canada resemble Europe in economic terms, the west looks more like Brazil” comment.

  36. Vit sorry to say But yes you are breaking Socan laws Which are in question & have been for sometime as Socan has questioned YouTube. So even though you post a link you are playing a selection.
    This is this same as someone who say runs a Kareoke nite in their local tavern or club etc..
    You are playing protected material that recieves royalties. Regardless if you are copying from youtube You are playing protected material.
    If you were playing the material for Your use only then no royalties would be issued But since you are playing for all on SDA to hear you are in a sense breaking Socan laws.
    BTW noticed my prior post is Under Editors Review, No foul language used.

    and my comment regarding this… pointing to someone’s content, isn’t taking their content, it’s a direction given. I think the supreme court of canada is currently considering this topic.
    and it often takes me about 10 seconds to include a link, with the http business. I include the full link as it it sometimes includes information one may want to see before clicking onto a “tiny.url” for example, when including “cbc” or “pdf” that some may not want to have tainting their computer. 🙂

But as a frequent and long-term commenter, I would like to add my opinion that “seed” musical tips have no relevance and neither do the comments that refer to the “seed” musical tip. I don’t come here to watch an old grainy 60’s clip…I come here to catch up on what is going on in the world….and it really irks me that some people’s legitimate news tips (maybe missing a link or whatever) get snidely clipped because they don’t fit Vit’s standard but comments about a dumb old video get a pass….sorry, but that’s my honest opinion….
    Kate’s blog is still the best though !

    As others have said, Readers Tips are really becoming quite boring & useless on Subjects that are imaterial to the blogs intentions.

  45. A few months ago, I linked, commented, copied and pasted some sda material to ‘reader tips’.
    I was referring to the night the University of East Anglia’s CRU global warming scam broke. I thought it a milestone that the blogsphere was way ahead of the MSM. (Media still sweeping under rug)
    I thought it very significant that we were seeing on sda, and other blogs, the biggest scam in history being exposed in such an obvious manner.
    It took me awhile to fine the sda thread where some of the more computer savvy we’re helping (forget the sda reader’s handle) someone to put the damning information on a website that all could go to and download. (Knowing that Mann, Jones and gang would do all they could to squash the availability of said information.
    I posted a few of the sda exchanges on reader tips but it remained up only a few minutes. I thought it was ‘blogsphere gets results history’ in the making. After all, it killed Copenhagen.

    It’s beyond credibility that the CBC’s “viewer-inspired” question came from none other than a former Liberal Party candidate — and that neither you, Mr. Graves, nor, seemingly, the CBC knew Ms. Pynenburg’s connection to the LPC.
    This doesn’t pass the smell test: Either Mr. Graves and the CBC are dissembling or they are completely incompetent.

    It’s funny, but I was so into Cream, and Clapton, that I went out and bought a “Blackie” strat, only to find out years later that Clapton played Gibson guitars on all of my favourite songs.
    At least I still have the stratocaster, which is probably worth more than I paid for it.

  49. Including an embedded YouTube video may or may not be a violation, Bryan. However, I don’t do that. If a court of relevant jurisdiction decides that posting a link to a another site is illegal, I will stop doing that. In the interim, it is ludicrous to suggest that simply posting a link to something is actually playing it (otherwise posting an ISBN would be the equivalent of actually reading the actual book).

    My 12:55 was in response to your 12:49, Bryan, which is explicitly allowed so long as we don’t get into extended debates that lower the signal to noise ratio. Unfortunately, we are starting to do that, so I’ll leave it there. As Kate requests below, “Take your extended debates to private email”. My email address is available via my name-link as always.

    Furthermore, there is no Reader Tips comment of yours being held by the system for release (I just checked) Bryan, so you are mistaken (perhaps you hit Preview and then forgot Post). I do take your point on the matter of not having the Principles & Guidelines available from the main entry every night, thanks for the suggestion and I’ll look into fixing that in the future.

  50. That may be true, Vit @ 2:27 (last sentence)….but I don’t recall you being so persnickety back then….I think the power has gone to your head.
    My opinion is that the opening musical “seed” is useless fluff; I find myself scrolling down past the “hey cool video!” “hey, check this one out, too!” banter and looking for real news…just my opinion. I wonder how many others feel the same way…
    When Readers’ Tips becomes all about you and criticisms of you, Vit, you know there’s a bit of a problem….
