Times Square Quilting Bee Goes Horribly Wrong

The smoldering propane tank, powder, gasoline and timing device equipped Pathfinder “appears” to be a car bomb, but they “haven’t attached a motive to it”.

A federal official said that domestic security officials had been informed that the event did not appear to be a terrorist threat.

Until they can blame it on tea parties.

  1. just outside the armed forces recruiting centre too, apparently.
    Having been there before…eerie.

  2. Outside the Lion Theatre, which was full at the time.
    3 propane tanks,2/5 gal fuel cans(full),batteries,wholesale type fireworks,and wiring,connecting all.
Ummmmmmm…..sounds like an early July 4th BB’Q to me.

  3. It will be easy..45th is the natural feeder (one way) into midtown from the Lincoln Tunnel..(you can make both left or right turns) The Toll booths into the Lincolm, and the tunnel itself have video cameras. 7th ave is one way towards central park..The Van looks like it is parked on 7th ave pointing in the wrong direction, but they may have moved it..Note 7th ave & 8th ave (Broadway) come together at Times square… JMO

  4. I have to correct Myself.. 45th is one-way towards
the Hudson west…8th ave in that area is not Broadway. Broadway & 8th are mixed at the Colunbus
    circle
When you come out of the Lincoln you would turn left on 8th ave and then Right on 46th ave which is the best natural flow (keep open)…or you may get some trafic tickets.. delivery trucks block
    most of the streets east/west
Broadway & 7th ave are both one-way and run South
The 45th & 7th is where the Double Decker Bus Tours are Staged
I hate it when my memory fails…walked by that Corner for ~ 18 years…coffee from the Mcdonalds on 7th

  5. $42.7 billion for Homeland Security and all I get is the lousy T-Shirt salesman to stop them from bombing Times Square….

  6. Wonder if the supects represent, as they did in the case of the Trawnah 18 (or 28), “a broad spectrum of Canadain Society” (RCMP Asst. Commissioner talking to media after arrests)

  7. This might be islamist nutbars, but I don’t think its Al quiada (sp?). When you have the backing of various governments and money is no object, you don’t use homemade explosives with improvised detonators. Justike the IRA had semtex and real detonators and TPU’s (time and power units), I suspect that “professional” islamist terrorists would have the same.

  8. minuteman:
Yep, the Islamists have found a unique was to celebrate May Day.
    That must be it.

  9. Curious,
Good question, but no. CC’s New York Office is 345 Hudson, a considerable distance from Times Square.
No the target wasnt “as clever” as that. Looks like simple focus on slaughter of innocents to create mayhem and fear….terrorism.
If one wants to get into more complex theories the best one I saw was it bears similarities to the Glasgow airport. The day before there were two failures at Picadilly Circus and Trafalgar Square….while focus was elsewhere then there was the drive in attack at Glasgow Airport.
Who knows if this is a single attempt or part of a larger campaign or program. I wouldnt rest easy for the next couple of days, since this appears to be a cell or individual that Homeland Security and/or the FBI didnt have a good handle on, or perhaps didnt know about.
Second attempts, either to hit the first responders when the arrive or in another place when attention and resources are focussed elsewhere is common. Once again, while I hope this was some lone wolf who is “amatuerish”….but I wouldnt count on it. I certainly hope the hope US law enforcement and intelligence isnt counting on it.

  10. Car bomb on May 1st? May Day of Russian Revolution fame? Parades through the Kremlin, Uncle Joe waving to the adoring crowds?
Gotta be one ‘a them crazy Tea Party racist gun huggers. Gotta be.

  11. *
huffpo was all over the “not a terrorist threat” thing.
even if… by some freak chance… this turned out to be
the “deer jawbone militia” from bumf*ck, arkansas…
how is this not a terrorist incident?

  12. Curious,
Small correction….Comedy Centrals owner, Viacom, has a head office nearby.
But I think that gives more credence to the bombers than is deserved. Hit the background owner as opposed to the direct producer, Comedy Central? I think the fact that there weer two or three full theatres in the 1 block radius and the place is always busy early evening on a Saturday is better explaination. I still think the target is more likely to be the 100’s of innocents people in the area rather than a corporate target with “deeper” meaning.
The moral reasoning on these thugs isn’t very sophisticated.

  13. Stephen – Don’t jump to conclusions. Comedy Central’s office may not be in Times Square but Viacom, their corporate owner is, at 1515 Broadway. Right at 45th. Right where the bomb was found.

  14. Not a terrorist threat? HOW the hell do they know this so quickly all the time? Don’t they need to do a bloody extensive, time-consuming investigation before they can credibly make such declarations?
Juxtapose that with the Obamacracy pre-emptively, with maximum paranoia, calling the SWAT team to scarily goosestep (ok, they didn’t goosestep, but they might as well’ve) around in front of a bunch of apparently non-threatening little old ladies singing “God Bless America” during yet another fully-peaceful, non-threatening Tea Party… I betcha the Obamacrat minions who called in the SWAT team didn’t realize that there were so many little old ladies there, and it ended up backfiring as a propaganda stunt. It was a goldmine for the online new newsmedia to exploit and make the Obamacracy look like the police state it’s quickly becoming.
They don’t do that to the pro-Obama “Raging Grannies”, nor to the usually-threatening Code Pink, as far as I can recall.
Hmm. An “amateurish”-looking bomb. Wonder if the resurrected-under-a-new-name
Weather Underground has anything to do with it? Sounds quite Ayersian to me… new strategy- a dud-bomb so that the Left can blame it on the “anti-gov’t rhetoric” of the “right”. Yup, they sure will!

  15. Bomb???
From what I had read as to what was in the car it would have caused a nice fire.
The incompetence of what they think is a bomb reeks of terrorists.

  16. EJHill – exactly. The bureacracy versus the man on the street.
It IS a terrorist attack; whether it is linked to Islamic fascism or illegal hispanic immigration or communism or…it is an act of terrorism.
What will be interesting is how Obama handles it. He refuses to take responsibility for anything and can’t handle criticism. His entire perspective is Denial.
So far, the economy has been ‘all due to Bush’ ignoring that the Democrats controlled Congress during the last two years of the Bush era and that they set up the mortgage-free-for-all.
Equally, illegal immigration doesn’t exist; any problems are due to ‘greedy Americans who want wealth’ and are, furthermore, racist.
To Obama, Islamic fascism doesn’t exist. He won’t even allow the terms of ‘terrorism’, Islamism, etc to be used.
The focus is, instead, on internal anti-Americanism which is defined as Anyone Who Criticizes Obama.
So, how is he going to handle this? If it’s by an internal group, he’ll use it to harass and intimidate valid dissent, i.e., the Tea Parties, whom he and his administration have already defined as anti-American and racist.
If it’s external, ah well, he’ll blame Bush.

  17. So, with the accurate newspaper description of what was in the vehicle, and the bomb squad chief calling it “more of an incendiary event” I wonder how many copy cat bombers we’d going to have now.
I mean, really. Sure one can google how to make a boom boom, but heck, just for a free light show with cops and fire trucks screaming up and down the street, some kid might want to do this as a prank.
Just throw a few empty jerri cans, some Loonie store New Year fire crackers and some Walmart Timex watches and taped everything together with duct tape.
Maybe just hindsight, but I’d rather have the head bomb guy say this was a top notch job, not ‘list all the ingredients’ so to speak, said it was dangerous to try something like this at home (verrrrry volatile)…and then wait.
You know ‘pride comes before the fall’ the guy will tip his hand in some bar somewhere that “he did it” to feed his pride.

  18. You are all mistaken showing your hidden racist leanings. The vehicle had propane tanks to seal roofs, the roofing nails to fasten shingles and the fireworks to celebrate this spontaneous act of charity. Too many years in the civil service folks. I have learned to rationalize anything.:(

  19. I think this goes back a lot further than the terrorist threats in New York. This may well be a rock and roll revenge event. If you remember, the Peppermint Lounge was on 45th Street right about where that SUV was parked with an idiots version of a bomb. You might call it the Peppermint Twisted Bomb.
I think this is work of Joey Dee who never forgave his band, the Star-lighters from punting him and forming a new band “The Young Rascals”. They went on to have a career, but what ever happened to Joey? He was pissed about that and I think this is his way of finally showing it. :0)

  20. I’m sure Mark Steyn will get around to saying it eventually, but I long for the days when “Bomb Found on Broadway” meant that Andrew Lloyd Webber was stinking up the joint.

  21. This has all the odor of a false flag event.
Even rank amateurs experiment with proto-types. Usually the results of a poorly designed car bomb device result in the thing detonating on the way to the site. During N Ireland’s “troubles” they were instances of moving vehicles going boom.
IEDs by their very nature are very…..touchy….
    Unstable ingredients….faulty detonators etc.

  22. We can all breath easy now. There is no way this was motivated by Islam. Oblamebush in office and its quite evident that he is on the Islamist’s side.

  23. They had better raid every old folks home in the state, especially the burbs!!!!
It’s been reported that a large number of the Tea Party demographic is elderly, and in many cases (not intended to scare you) middle class white.
Protect America, the nasty Christian taxpayers are protesting.

  24. OH, WAIT…
    http://www.nationalpost.com/news/story.html?id=2977741
Looks like they might be plotting to blame it on the Tea Party after all… Napolitano’s saying it IS a “potential terrorist attack”…

“We’re taking this very seriously,” Napolitano told CNN’s “State of the Union” program. “We’re treating it as if it could be a potential terrorist attack.”

No doubt some folks like, say, Nasty Peelousy, will attempt to, ad-homimen, at least, pin it on all who dare to dissent…

  25. It can’t be the Tea Party folks. Guys who served in WWII, Korea and Nam wouldn’t be so amateurish. If those boys made an IED it would WORK.

  26. Place your bets.
It’s either the usual suspects(mad Muslims) or the looney Christian militia.

  27. Nothing here to indicate a connection between the failed Times Square bomb and the Pittsburgh microwave bomb… maybe it’s all regarding tests to see where the CCTV and monitoring is kept up… 2 failed bomb attempts, a few hours travel time between them… I think if it was ex military people with issues, these would have caused damage from the get go. Not simply fear and hatred of “the cause”.
    http://www.foxnews.com/us/2010/05/02/pittsburgh-marathon-course-altered-bomb-scare/

  28. Let us see now,
Neapolitano, as per earlier reports, pronounced that the islamist terrorists are not, that in fact they are (islamist) man made disasters.
Now it seems when they are local chaps, she decided to call “We’re treating it as if it could be a potential terrorist attack.”
Must have learned that in the Ivy league, they know these things when they spot them.

  29. Fausta wades into it with a comparison between Times Square and another failed attempt in London a few years ago…
    http://faustasblog.com/?p=20043
“Fuel-air bombs are hugely destructive, as this harrowing Danger Room article published after the London plot broke made all too clear. A fuel-air bomb properly detonated in Times Square on a Saturday night likely would have killed…”
is there a tier 2 islamic group?

  30. ctv resident ‘terrorism expert’ Juneau Katsaya (or however you spell it) has made the inference that it could be ‘homegrown white supremacy group’..reminds us of the recent arrest in the US of such a group.cbc says it is ‘Pakistani Taliban’

  31. From the NYPD report of the London bomb attempt…
with no mention of right wing militias, only an Iraq connection.
“The first bomb was composed of at least 50 litres of fuel, propane gas cylinders, and nails linked to a triggering mechanism…”
interesting comparison here, only a 2 minute read with fotos. I’m somewhat curious how long before O’bama makes a statement saying that “the system worked”…
    http://msnbcmedia.msn.com/i/msnbc/Sections/NEWS/NYPD-London.pdf

  32. Well, you see, Huff Po and the rest are a little bit racist – when they say it’s not a terrorist attack, they mean that it hasn’t been tied to Islamists.
Of course it’s a “terror inspired attack” – it’s just that they conflate Islam and racism you see . . . . .

  33. Speaking of home grown terror groups, did y’all hear about the Hutaree “militia”(aka beer drinking club)finally getting their bail hearings?
The lead FBI agent was “unable to remember several details”. Like, she was unable to answer basic questions such as “What specific bomb materials did you find, Agent?”
I seem to recall a headline to the effect that the judge told the FBI if they couldn’t show him these idiots did more than talk, the judge was going to let them out.
Evile and dangerous, these militias. Racists, you know. Can’t be too careful.

  34. Maybe, just maybe, if Obama apologized more often and harder, with a little tear in his eyes (and maybe a bow or two) all the hatred against the United States will just ‘go away’.
Or maybe their enemies will just be emboldened to try more stuff like this.
    Just sayin’.

  35. Well having ruled out Islamists as perpetrators I would recommend that MZ Neopolitan head of homeland security look closely at those stand offish Hutterites, Mennonites and Amish. Those black clothes are a dead give away.

  36. nope Joe, I think it’s the other guys wearing black… the ones that can’t knit or quilt worth a shit.
    http://www.longwarjournal.org/archives/2010/05/pakistani_taliban_cl.php
“Qari Hussain Mehsud, the top bomb maker for the Movement of the Taliban in Pakistan, said he takes “fully responsibility for the recent attack in the USA.” Qari Hussain made the claim on an audiotape accompanied by images that was released on a YouTube website that calls itself the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan News Channel.
The tape has yet to be verified, but US intelligence officials contacted by The Long War Journal believe it is legitimate. The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan News Channel on YouTube was created on April 30. Officials believe it was created to announce the Times Square attack, and Qari Hussain’s statement was pre-recorded.
All indications are the tape is legitimate”

  37. Is it still “amateurish” if the gun locker’s full of radioactive stuff?

  38. One of the broadway theatre shows that was playing is called “God of Carnage” – has nothing to do with blowing anything up type carnage. Playing at Benard B. Jacobs theatre located on 45th btwn 7th and 8th avenue.

  39. The power of that mix had it detonated is hard to imagine.
I saw the results of one tiny gas bottle that exploded early one morning in a car trunk in South Vancouver, thirty years ago.
The back half of the car was missing and parts were found in a park hundreds of yards away.
CBC radio 1 said some Pakistan based group phoned in claiming ownership… who knows.

  40. The difference between a monster bomb and a dud, when dealing with volatiles such as gasoline and propane is a very, very fine line….with luck a big factor.
This could easily have been a young “daisy cutter”.
Many times during the days of sail and muzzle-loading cannon….it was not unknown for pirate ships to suddenly manifest as a hole in the water….stuff happens….
Handling explosives is both an art and a science.

  41. Obama & his flying monkeys the MSM, will bury this in a flood of BS. If a nuke went off in NY, this administration would call it climate change!
