Welcome to the Wednesday (EBD) SDA Late Nite Radio.
The music of Christian church services can range from the practically monotone, vaguely medieval sounds of some eastern Orthodox churches, to the all-out, exultant, virtually free-form testimonial shouting of some Pentecostal services. Tonight’s music, excerpted from a live broadcast of a Chicago area show called The Breakthrough Hour, is of the latter variety…and then some.
Watch and listen as powerhouse gospel legend Delores “Honey” Sykes, backed by a remarkable group of musicians on bass, drums, piano and organ, builds the energy, moment by moment, until the entire congregation is dancing in the aisles. Just when the whole thing threatens to get out of control, it does, and a Sunday evening church service turns into a riot of music and sales: as the band plays on wildly in the background, a woman takes the broadcast mic and begins offering audio and video cassettes, carefully enunciating the prices right down to the ninety-five cents, and then, while she’s talking over top of the band and the shouting congregation, the pastor, Apostle Dr. Richard D. Henton, can no longer contain himself and commences to shouting into his mic – “Come on now! Owww!” – from his throne-like chair on the side of the stage.
Christianity, commerce, and a dance riot all rolled into one – only in America, as Don King would say. Here then, without further ado, former Chicago Duncanaire Delores Sykes exhorts all to understand that when your troubles are squeezing the life out of you, that’s when you’ve got to Stretch Out.
The thread is open for your Reader Tips.

Here’s a brief excerpt from Wolf Howling’s Thoughts On Britain, Colonialism, and Multiculturalism:
“In all of history, I can think of only two colonial powers that have had a major positive impact on the world. The first is Rome. As they expanded throughout Western Europe, they built up the infrastructure in each area they laid claim. They brought with them writing and a language that unlocked a rich store of knowledge. They brought advanced science, engineering and sophisticated forms of government administration. These things they left in their wake, allowing Western Europe to evolve much faster than those who did not benefit from Roman rule.
“The second colonial power to have such a major positive impact is of course Britain. The Brits, just like the Romans, brought a host of benefits to the nations they colonized, from education to the English language, from trade to capitalism, from government bureaucracy and democracy to the British legal system. What further set Britain apart from other colonial powers of the time was that Britain tended to treat her colonies as what amounts to junior trading partners. That was a major difference between Britain, Spain and France. The latter two looked upon their colonies as areas to be exploited for their riches.”
Do read the whole thing, if you have the time.
This must be a joke…

“Rural Canada Matters
Rural Canada matters. It puts food on our tables and drives much of the resource wealth of our country. Rural Canadians deserve the same opportunities and comparable levels of service that urban Canadians enjoy.
At the recent Canada at 150 conference, Mr. Ignatieff announced Liberals would take the $5 billion to $6 billion a year the Conservatives are planning to give to large corporations in tax cuts – at a time when our country simply can’t afford them – and invest in deficit reduction and economic initiatives, like those outlined below, which will have lasting, tangible benefits for Canadians from all walks of life.
This page will be updated with the links to the latest press releases, backgrounders and speeches as they become available. ”
Also, if the country can’t afford the tax cuts, how can it afford to use that same money on these lavish spending programs?
Here’s a rare archival interview with Maurice Strong, back when he wasn’t living in a walled-off compound in China. He says the future will be determined by whether the Royal We are “enlightened enough” to subject ourselves to enough “discipline and control,” and points out that we may need to have licenses to have babies, at some point.
Watch the video, and ask yourself: would you buy a used car from this man?

Wow, that Strong footage is something else, EBD. Thanks.
Hodge, when he-who-would-rule-from-behind-his-arched-thatchy-brow starts talking about a National Food Policy, I almost forget what continent and era I’m living in. I mean, what’s next? A National Clothing Policy?

“we have also noted a distressing increase in vehicles and engines with what can only be considered to be environmentally unfriendly levels of horsepower,” Strickland said in the release.
Further down:
It is expected that fuel economy and emissions will be measured during wide-open throttle (WOT) runs from 0-60 and 0-100 mph and from 0 to the vehicle’s top speed. In addition, measurements will be conducted at proposed steady-state speeds of 80 and 100 mph for all vehicles and at 120 and 150 mph for those vehicles capable of reaching these excessive speeds. A factoring system will be developed to incorporate the results of these tests into each manufacturer’s overall CAFÉ certification performance, the release states.
A “factoring” system? Are you kidding? Unless I have a steady state speed of 150 mph, I don’t see how this is even remotely relevant.
EBD,
I posted something like that a few days ago. Included is a program to help farmers manage pesticide and fertilizer use. We all know the Liberals are much more knowledgeable regarding pesticide and fertilizer use than farmers themselves. They figured it all out during the “deep thinkers conference”.
Anyways here’s a direct link to the “Liberal food policy”:

Agreed, EBD, about Rome and Britain. A key difference from France and Spain, which were colonizers only to extract the resources, is that Rome and Britain enabled the population to be politically, economically and socially part of the nation.
France and Spain set up elitist rule where they and their bureaucracy ran the ruled. When they left, this same two-class disaster remained, eg, in Mexico, Vietnam, Africa, etc.
Ignatieff’s billions wouldn’t go to the farmers but to the bureaucracy to ‘oversee’ them. Same mindset as France and Spain.
I also find it concerning to speak, as Ignatieff does, that ‘rurals..deserve the same opportunities and the same level of service..as in cities. Yet another reference to ‘rights’ and ‘entitlements’.
Is there going to be a school that you can walk to? Will the water not come from a well? What about burning wood for heat in the winter – something forbidden in the city. Ignatieff, the latte-Liberal, doesn’t seem to know much about rural life. Maybe people prefer the non-urban life.
ET, I know from personal experience that a lot of people *do* prefer the non-urban life – in fact, “prefer” might not even be strong enough a word.
Here’s a great selection of photos of Canada taken between 1858 to 1935.
I find this one fascinating too: via DavidThompson.typepad.com, here’s some color photographs, taken in 1942, of New York’s Lower East Side.

Just had to bring that to your attention.
Hey EBD, great selection this eve! I tell you me, I would go to that church, garontee!
Also thanks for providing the link to the gospel blog. Cool.
Apparently my link at 10:43 CST is completely fake. Sorry for the inconvenience.
No need to apologize, allan. We can’t possibly fact-check every single link we post in a comments thread – it would take days. What we can do is issue a correction/update when we find out that the information in a link is incorrect or inaccurate, which is exactly what you did. Thanks for that.

At New Culture Forum, Helen Szamuely summarizes some of the points made by Pascal Bruckner (author of The Tyranny of Guilt) in his speech to a packed house in England. Excerpt:
“The feeling of guilt that has been imposed on Western countries by the various elites (and elites matter, as M Bruckner said), coupled with a constant demand for self-denigration, is at the heart of the cultural malaise we are experiencing. However, its roots, as was mentioned in the discussion, lie in an important aspect of Western culture: it is one of self-analysis and, if needs be, self-criticism; it has been there from the very beginning, however far we can trace it. But we have to deal with cultures that do not have the same attitude and have not yet worked out a way of doing so.”
(…)
“While Western countries, particularly those of Western Europe are endlessly enjoined to confess to historic crimes and to expiate their guilt (often through international aid that helps nobody but bloodthirsty, kleptocratic tyrants), there is one subject about which silence reigns. There were two vicious totalitarian systems in the twentieth century: Nazism and Communism. Everything in Western history is related to Nazism; when it comes to Communism, its crimes and the support those crimes had in countries that were not under its yoke are passed over without a murmur. Yet, the feelings of guilt were first sown by the Communists and their fellow travelers well before the Second World War and until we face up to that problem it is unlikely that we can tackle the malaise Pascal Bruckner has diagnosed.”
Wow EBD. What a selection!
I was 16, working as a cowhand in Texas. The white family lived a few miles from a negro colony and on their land was a church on a 12 degree tilt and it wasn’t consistent either. Every 4 weeks a traveling preacher would come around and 6 of us attended once. Only white folks in amongst 50 Black folks. We were welcomed and before long that place was rocking so hard the building was literally shaking on its rotting piles.
Never forget it. A moment in time where we were all friends, smiling like fools and Getting Down!

An Arizona rancher named Roger Bartlett caught 16 illegal aliens trespassing on his property in 2004. “Aware of the chaos in Mexico, the increasing cross-boarder violence, and the repeated damage to his property, Bartlett made a citizen’s arrest,” and called the border patrol.
Here’s the, erm, punchline:
“Bartlett was sued for $32 million in actual and punitive damages. The courts found he had not violated the smugglers’ civil rights, but he still had to pay out some $677,000 in punitive and other ‘damages.'”
Small price to pay for trying to help the police to enforce the law….
at about the 4. minutes mark, the interviewer at the BBC refers to Mo Strong as “Dr. Strong” yes I know he’s the holder of multiple doctorates and professorships, I guess the BBC thought it an honor to interview such a man, and let him know it.
a very enjoyable “late nite” video EBD….

Stretch Out: Now that’s LIVELY faith! Thanks, EBD. These guys know what to do when the going gets tough — they get tough, they get going, and they STRETCH OUT!!! Hallelujah!
Bob Dylan put out a CD of his Gospel songs in 2003, which seems to be unavailable now. Darn! Here’s a link to When He Returns, played by Dylan on piano at Massey Hall in 1980. There’s none of his usual cynicism here, just heartache, tears, and gratitude for “a Mighty God”:

“Human rights group accuses University of Ottawa of ’spying’
A Canadian human rights group is accusing the University of Ottawa of “spying” and attempting to stifle free speech after top university administrators considered preventing a well-known Burmese activist from speaking on campus.
Canadian Friends of Burma says it will ask the Ontario government to grant provincial ombudsman André Marin power to investigate the conduct of the University of Ottawa administrators in relation to the event.”
“The revelations contained in the emails come just a month after François Houle, the university’s vice-president academic and provost, sent a letter to U.S. conservative pundit Ann Coulter urging her to use “restraint, respect and consideration” when speaking at the school during a Canadian tour.”

Just to give you an idea of how incompetent and useless Toronto politicians are; a small example for over 30 years it can not build a simple connection from downtown to the Pearson Airport. Its transit system is a debacle.
It purchased 129 Peter St. as a 40 bed shelter almost 5 years ago for $4.7m, which was about twice the cost it should have been according to real estate analysts and then the City wanted to make a few renovations. It has now ballooned to $11m and wont open until maybe June with delay after delay!
At this rate I figure the 2015 Pan American Games should be ready some time in 2025

October 2007 to spring 2008 City replaces water mains.
October 2009 to January 2010 Toronto Hydro excavates the street again, to lower its vaults and chambers.
March 15 through end of May 2010 Four Seasons Site Development Inc. digs up the street a third time, to put in tree pits and granite sidewalks.
May to December 2010 Contractor set to add benches, lamps, bike locking rings.

Thanks for those photos. Outstanding old New York. When enough of a detailed location was given, I compared some of those pictures to the same location in New York today, using StreetView. One of the last pictures, “McSorley’s Ale House”, shows that McSorley’s is STILL THERE!! And it looks as though it hasn’t changed a bit, right down to the plants in beer kegs in front.

Apparently that esteemed body of wisdom and principles, the United Nations, has selected Iran, yes that’s correct, Iran, to sit on its Human Rights Committee on the Status of Women. That’s the committee devoted to the equality of women and justice for women.
Iran. Where they will charge women with a ‘suntan’, i.e., because it would show their face has been uncovered rather than veiled.
Iran – where a mullah informed us that earthquakes are caused by the immodest dress of women.
Iran – where women are stoned to death, where women are lashed if raped.
Iran, where men can divorce wives without reason but women can’t do the same with men.
Iran – where women’s publications that support gender equality are shut down, where women are banned from key areas of study.
Other nations on this committee: Zimbabwe, Liberia, the Congo, Cuba, Angola.
How do you spell petty? I spell it G-O-O-D-A-L-E. This story from (of all places) Jane Taber at the Globe says that the liberal from Saskabush, hopefully the last one EVER is on record as saying,— “He told MPs and senators, according to sources, that no one was to honour, give accolades or make complimentary statements in the House about Judy Wasylycia-Leis, the NDP veteran who announced this week that she is leaving federal politics.” — Wow,that is petty. BTW,the CBC is in the process of reporting on this story and will put it up as soon as the liberals win a majority in Saskatchewan.—http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/politics/ottawa-notebook/ralph-goodale-holds-a-grudge/article1551390/
ET; This just continues a long line of stellar appointments by the UN. Mugabe as chair of “Sustainable Development” and Khaddafi as chair of “human rights”,come to mind. The UN could and should serve a purpose, but they play a numbers game. We,as in democracies, are losing rapidly.
Even for the Toronto Star this column is a bit of a stretch. The opening paragraph from Travers,—“Lurking in the scandal now making pariahs of Rahim Jaffer and Helena Guergis are the spectres of the Quebec sponsorship scheme and privileged political access to lush federal contracts. Conservatives who remember that Liberals were ruined by easy money now must convince the country that history isn’t repeating.”— Is that so James?
