  2. Update: Family of imprisoned Cuban pastor given eviction order

    The family of a pastor who was given a six year and seven month prison sentence in July 2009 (click here for more information) has been ordered to vacate their home in Cuba. Authorities delivered documents to Pastor Omar Gude Perez’s wife, Kenia, notifying her that their home is to be confiscated and that the family will be relocated to a significantly smaller apartment in poor condition outside the city of Camaguey. Kenia has told officials that she and her children will not leave their home voluntarily. Although the official reason for the confiscation and relocation is “illicit gain,” Kenia has been informed by authorities that she is being punished for informing international human rights groups and foreign governments about the human rights violations her family has suffered.     It was once a centrepiece of the Federal Government’s election strategy, but now the emissions trading scheme (ETS) has been relegated to the shelf until at least 2013.
    Delaying the scheme means the Government could save $2.5 billion from its budget over the next three years, because it would not be paying compensation to households and industries.
    Prime Minister Kevin Rudd recently said climate change remained a fundamental economic, environmental and moral challenge, whether it was popular or not.
    But Government sources say it was decided last week to remove the scheme from next month’s budget, bowing to the political reality that the Senate is unlikely to pass the ETS any time soon.
    The Upper House has already blocked the ETS legislation twice.
    The bills are before the Parliament again but the Senate has delayed the debate while it examines the deal that Mr Rudd struck with former Opposition leader Malcolm Turnbull.
    The bottom line is that neither the Opposition, now led by Tony Abbott, nor the Greens like the amended legislation, so it remains in limbo.”

    If this isn’t the most partisan, one-sided opinion piece masquerading as balanced reporting, I don’t know what is. It would seem their idea of balance is an old quote by Palin not specific to the thesis being posed and an “I’m a victim, too” quote from Monckton. Everyone else, however, gets to hammer on it without rebuttal, the assumption being that “deniers” are violent oppressors in the pay of Big Oil.
    Absolutely disgusting trash from Reuters and not a bit of investigative journalism. You know, like a quick visit to wattsupwiththat. Most ironic quote:

    Trey and Matt made it clear in an interview before the aforementioned episode was aired, that all of the censoring was from Comedy Central, not from South Park. You can’t criticize or accuse Trey and Matt of shenanigans considering the cut they provided wasn’t censored in anyway.
    Re: Matt and Trey likely not being conservatives or supporting the GOP, I can’t say; but, had you viewed their material you’d see clearly they are not progressive p*ssies. They are the ONLY voice criticizing the progressive sacred cow(s) on a regular basis for years now.
    I recommend you see the movie “Team America” from the creators of South Park before you accuse these heroes of having an ulterior motive. JMO

    *in 1998 lost licence for driving with exess blood-alchol level
    and was convicted 5times for speeding since 1991, has also been convicted for having improper license plates, disobeying a sign & for seat belt offences.
