“They just appeared to think they knew the subject well enough, or had a set enough idea in their heads as to what this kind of story was about, that they pursued only the lines of questioning necessary to fill in the blanks of that presumed story line.”
“On nothing more than a story in the paper and armed with no evidence, Fife laid out “the issue,” based on his personal suspicions.”

Oh man, “dart-throwing chimp” is my new word for pundits!
I love that phrase too!- explains Robert Fife and Jane Taber to a ‘T’ in their effort to gin up a scandal over a mortgage. Seems to me they have such intent interest in anything conservative and a total lack of interest for anything liberal ( no matter how worthy the candidate for scandal)
And, back to the prhase ‘Dart throwing chimp’…does that not conjure up visions of say a Robert Gibb at the WH Press conferences or more to the point, those e-mails exposing the ‘top down hubris’ of the Climate change ‘scientists’ working overtime to aim that dart where they wanted it to go!
Guergis is in enough trouble without Fife and Taber just making stuff up.
Notice they dont apologize, which in the mortgage aspect of the story they should.
Shameless.
My favorite Fife quote, heard on Mike Duffy’s show:
“I’ll see it when I believe it”.
“I’ll see it when I believe it” Priceless!
And does that not describe the reporting we get every darn day?
Modern Journalism: Having an opinion and finding the “facts” to back them up!
Kudos to John Gormley. Would that there were more like him, in journalism.
Ever since I saw Fife’s “knuckle dragger” comment about anyone conservative, I’ve given very little credibility to anything he reports. This is not much new. He needs to retire and take Taber with him…..
Taber and Fife.
I think that’s what my neighbour calls her pair of snarling, simpering, pissing little chihuahuas.
Sounds like Guergis is in deeper trouble now; Jaffer’s use of her Blackberry:
“Guergis quits Tory cabinet; under RCMP investigation”
http://www.thestarphoenix.com/opinion/Helena+Guergis+quits+Harper+cabinet/2783381/story.html
Fife and Taber are two of the reasons I do not watch CTV anymore. Have to keep the blood pressure down you know.
Shit, I thought for a split second that status of women will be ministerless, but community minister takes up the position. What a waste!
Discovering the source of MSM bias is just a form of honest but mistaken mental shorthand is about as profound as discovering after the raid that the only nonwhore working at an Escort Agency is your gullible self.
The first link “The Bias of Veteran Journalists” has an interesting quote from an NYT editor nonetheless, ” the new reporters are … the ones who ask the best questions.”
Reminds me of a koan I came across yesterday:
“Nan-in, a Japanese master during the Meiji era (1868-1912), received a university professor who came to inquire about Zen.
“Nan-in served tea. He poured his visitor’s cup full, and then kept on pouring.
“The professor watched the overflow until he no longer could restrain himself. “It is overfull. No more will go in!”
“”Like this cup,” Nan-in said, “you are full of your own opinions and speculations. How can I show you Zen unless you first empty your cup?””
http://www.cincinato.org/koans/showone_en.php?koan=a_cup_of_tea.txt
Some journalists are too arrogant to give up their cup of tea, others have an empty cup that anyone can piss into and then they continue on trying to sell their cup of tea to everyone else.
Where were these cracker jack reporters when Jean Chretien was handing out money for golf courses and hotels?
And for WalterF about that RCMP investigation, no one knows what it is for. Chances are much better that the unsubstantiated allegations of influence peddling by Jaffer would be the investigation as there is nothing Guergis did except get pissed off at some officious windbag in the “hellhole” that is PEI. I’ve been to PEI, it’s too small to be a real hellhole, more like a heckhole.
Dwayne,
Who knows. I can’t imagine Harer calling in the RCMP on his own minister, they only do criminal, unless there was a serious and somewhat credible allegation floating around.
Now use of the ministers blackberry….well it means that maybe good old RJ had access to cabinet material. maybe the budget….maybe RJ passed the info on, or is alleged to have. Maybe its soemthing else, remember the guy had cocaine in his jacket.
Jaffer himself needs to answer questions on his own. Guergis has to clarify things as well….the whole thing is very odd, and yes I blame Jaffer the most, what HG saw in him in the first place is beyond me, but love is blind.
Wasn’t it George Carlin that using sports described journalists?
“I calls ’em as I sees ’em and if I don’t sees ’em I makes ’em up!”
Stephen, using someone’s crackberry doesn’t mean you have access to the realm. your pondering puts you in the fife/taber category but with less of an audience.
I was always puzzled as to why Guergis was singled out as a target for a media gang ravishment. I mean, she may be a bit of a klutz dealing with slothful unionized service industry workers but that hardly seemed to justify the blood feeding frenzy she takes from the media.
Now, being hounded by news-creating dart throwing spin monkeys with writer’s block and a dead news day – the whole thing makes sense.
This concocted who-kissed-who tabloid paparazzi sludge is what passes for news in the demented dominion.
I think Kathy is onto something when she mocks the presumptuous intellectual and moral superiority of these MSM hobgoblins.
While Guergis may well be deserving of demotion CTV is essentially a piece ofagenda driven leftist shit in MSM alongside forced taxpayer subsidized CBC.
Texas,
Access to the blackberry gives you access to their email account, allows you to open and view whatever attatchments are sent. We dont know, but its a reasonable theory that fits the facts that are currently out there.
That being said it is an enormous void when the PM calls in the RCMP, who only do criminal investigations, and there be no explainations provided.
Fife and Taber were way off on the mortgage speculation. They were just making up wrongdoing when none was alleged, or any facts to support it. In this case some unknown criminal wrongdoing is alleged, hence the RCMP gets called in by the PM, different cases.
Who knows….information needs to be put out there, this is serious stuff. There may be nothing there, as it turned out in the Income Trust investigation. But whatever criminal allegation it is it involves just HG and RJ, and that includes the scenario of RJ taking advantage of HG, where she is an innocent party.
End of the day, more info is better. HG could help her own case if she was more forthcoming.
Is it just me or did I miss something?
I was working under the impression that I kept myself abreast of current events…..and mow this Guergis thing is abroad…..no details except she is possibly being investigated by the RCMP and has resigned from the cabinet and the leftist MSM regards her as several layer lower than Whale crap.
It reminds me of 2 old biddies gossiping about X….says one I don’t know but it is just terrible……..Or my Chysler crazy aunt, telling me about a new car…..she didn’t know how many wheels it had but is was just wonderful….
Bill says “I was always puzzled as to why Guergis was singled out as a target for a media gang ravishment.”
Probably on orders from Donolo to Liberal operatives that are planted in every “mainstream” media organization in the country.
The problem is the opposition in Canada has turned into the political version of the tabloid TMZ, except without the humour.
Meanwhile, nothing gets done. The government can’t govern and Parliament never gets on with the business of addressing real issues. Iggynoramus is the most irresponsible politician of my lifetime (I say this as a former long-time Liberal who voted for Chretien, Trudeau, etc.)
I’m angry enough to become Liberal again just for one purpose: to subvert and destroy that party from within with every false and defamatory allegation 100x worse than the completely amoral and unethical Iggynoramus could imagine. After all, there’s no penalty for being a professional political slanderer in Canada — every fake political tabloid allegation from “pocketing communion hosts” to “torturing innocent Afghan farmers” has been perfectly acceptable. This has been hate activity, not legitimate opposition to an issue. And it is probably because Harper is a Christian.
BTW, did the opposition at least have the grace to show solidarity with Harper after he was threatened with being beheaded by the “Toronto 18”? Or did they secretly celebrate it? How about the time the Liberals put up that doctored photograph buffooning the assassination of Harper in the person of Oswald? These are not opposition MP’s, they are anti-Christian pigs.
I am going channel the traits of a professional journalists and say my suspicion is that HG is a woman who has gotten in way over her head. She needs to take a leave of absence and get away from the hyenas in Ottawa before they completely tear her apart.
“that status of women will be ministerless, but community minister takes up the position”
There’s 2 ministries that are almost as idiotic as Silly Walks. No wait, they’re more idiotic. SW was a comedy skit.
MSM headline omits the word: Liberal.

[Liberal] “Kash Heed becomes the third B.C. solicitor general to resign
VICTORIA — Kash Heed announced Friday he is under investigation by the RCMP and will be stepping down as the province’s solicitor-general.
In doing so, Heed became the third consecutive solicitor-general to step down in the last 25 months.”
http://www.vancouversun.com/Kash+Heed+becomes+third+solicitor+general+resign/2784603/story.html
I resent this.
When I was in Ottawa a while ago, I was just a few feet away from Mr. Fife—at, of all places, the top of an escalator! Sticking my foot out in front of him immediately came to mind. However, thinking about my future, I desisted.
What a puny, preening popinjay he is. And I only knew what he looked like from SDA’s linked videos of his posturing performances. I NEVER watch CTV.
Fife is proof the really low IQ types, the ones who excel in Pub & Library Snoozing, do so well in Journalism.
speaking of media and reporting standards, of interest to the fans of sheriff arpaio and his gang of thugs:
3w.courthousenews.com/2010/04/08/26230.htm
I can’t believe they ran with the Jaffer/busty hooker story with no proof. Is it just me or if this really happened shouldn’t someone have noticed? How hard would it be to get the waiter/waitress to verify the story or someone else who was there confirm it. With the hate on Toronto has for the conservatives maybe even some person sitting close by could be found to speak. If no one verifies this story should we believe it really happened?
Been waiting for this from MSM.
PM Harper has surprises awaiting Liberal Iffy, et al, and the left-liberal MSM.
Wait for them.
The hate campaign from the left has backfired in their faces.
It’s not egg on Iggy’s face.
Now, the choice is clear for Canadians.

“PM praised in handling Guergis situation
Prime Minister Stephen Harper is winning praise from experts for the way he handled the “salacious” controversies surrounding former cabinet minister Helena Guergis.
Ian Capstick, a communications consultant and former NDP staffer, says he doesn’t see any other time at which Harper could have fired Guergis, despite a well-publicized tantrum at a Prince Edward Island airport and ongoing bad publicity over her husband.
“You don’t lose your job because of salacious gossip, you lose your job because you did something wrong,” Capstick said.”

i’m with iggy… why didn’t stephen harper just
use the special “pmo time machine”?

KS from the get-go …. Poo Flinging Baboons.
Darts require some comprehension of cause and effect.
Joe Molnar…
CTV and CBC…two leftist agenda driven pieces of shit… How right you are!
Is there a message in the fact the PM gave the Status of Women portfolio to someone who already has a Cabinet post?
The case should be closed pending the investigation ordered, the goons in the opposition and their media shills should sit back and hear the echos from the empty chambers of their minds.
Have we ever had such a pathetic excuse for an Official Opposition? Nothing is important to them beyond playing gotcha games, and this latest one will end up like all the rest and fall flat.
Liz, that is because the Liberals have been slowly discovering during the last seventeen years that they do not stand for anything and have not for fifty years now. So the CBC, CTV and Global have taken up the slack.
Fife…what an imbecile. A call to his local banker would have quickly confirmed a simple fact. That is, it is common practice in Canada for a lender to register a mortgage on title for the full valuation of the property. However, the loan itself would only be advanced for, for example, 75% or 80% of this value. This is true for both commercial and residential mortgage loans.
For example, I buy a house for $600,000. My bank registers a mortgage against my property of $600,000. However, the bank only lends me $480,000, 80% loan to value, which is the maximum conventional residential financing allowed under law in Canada (i.e. without CMHC insurance).
Let me make this clear: the amount registered on the title document has NOTHING WHATSOEVER to do with the underlying loan. Given the flexibility of so many mortgage products these days (i.e. the ability to draw, redraw, or create multiple loan segments within a mortgage loan), the title document will also reflect an interest rate of, for example, Prime plus 7.0%. However, what the borrower ACTUALLY pays is guided by the promissory note.
The legal mortgage document is not the promissory note. The legal mortgage document is only what is registered at the land titles registry, represents the security on the loan, and is the legal mechanism by which a lender can initiate foreclosure proceedings.
The title document, including any mortgage registered therein, is in the public domain, and is what Fife would have been referring too. The promissory note contains the actual terms, rates, and conditions of the loan itself, and would be strictly protected by the lender under Canadian privacy law. As such, Fife would have no way of speculating on the nature of the terms of Guergis’ loan.
Fife. What a maroon.
Does anyone here have a link to the PM’s speech today about the First World War soldiers? I would like to listen to it. CTV and Cbc just replayed the GGs speech.
Gah!
Lengthy post caught up in the filter, which always (understandably) happens when I comment on finance and banking matters, my personal area of professional expertise.
Kate, hopefully you can get my first post up ASAP.
The second linked page (Star Phoenix) goes on to note that the HIV-AIDS incidence in Saskatchewan is rising because the province gives out free needles to drug abusers. So abusers tend to inject rather than smoke.
“alongside forced taxpayer subsidized CBC.”
Just for the record, all the results from the poll at http://canadacomments.com/cbc/cbcq.html were “Yes”
The question is: “Should the taxpayer-funded status of the CBC be re-evaluated?” Yes/No/Not Sure
I guess that I shouldn’t mention that there were only 15 responses, all from SDA readers and many of the 15 email names were like ‘mickeymouse’, ‘a.hitler’ and ‘f-u-piperpaul’.
That would be quite unjournalistic of me to disclose those facts.
Fife the magic news fairy lived by the sleaze / And frolicked in the muddy depths with all his newsy fleas/ Old Lloyd he always counted on the skanky little Bob/ to tip the barrel one more time and expose his little knob/ He couldn’t get a girl in 7 years of high school/ So he stalked Helena day and night / And this is all he got? Sing this to Puff the magic dragon, feel free to add verses, Fife makes me puke!
Well they dont call him barney fife the knife for nothing,he reminds me of dummy dick leblanc and wayne the pain easter, allways got there mouthes ingaged before there brains
You know, of all the things I miss by not having TV, I love missing CTV the most. What a pack of rabid weasels. May they all starve in the cold.
I love that quote about dart throwing chimps too. Why on Earth would I pay money to listen to pundits who are less accurate than random chance? Good thing I stopped, it was torquing me off.
http://onpar.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/04/05/no-access-is-no-problem-for-some-media/?scp=1&sq=Darren%20Rovell&st=cse
Slightly OT, but the correction at the end of the story is hilarious.
