Kate, did you not, awhile back, have a post on this ?
Explaining exactly what was ‘declining’ – the “hockey stick” hid evidence of the MWP and the LIA. NO? And how crucial it all was?
Mann’s hockey stick led to
CRU led to
IPCC led to
UN Summary for Policy Makers led to
Kyoto led to
THE BIGGEST FRAUD THE WORLD HAS EVER SEEN !!
If you read the article, make sure you read the comments thread. They dice him up bad.
Not a word about the flakey code or the deplorable state of the data sets?
Gosh, how surprising.
Of all the technical,scientific, and political people out there ripping Mann a new one;
Li’l old totally insignificant, dumb wannabe from Alaska is the problem.
LMAO !
Heh
I’m a bit surprised at this.
Mikey is under investigation by his university (PSU) and I would have thought they would have him on a fairly tight leash as a damage control measure.
Adding more fuel to the already hot fire is probably not what he needs.
According to NASA, the warmest recorded year in the U.S. was 1934 (thanks to a glitch Steve McIntyre discovered in the GISS temperature data), not 1998. Did Mann not get the memo? Did he also miss the memo stating that the warmest year globally — according to NASA (y’know, the people he works for) — was 2005?
Apparently Sarah Palin isn’t the only one trotting out old numbers and information. *koff*
Wow, Mann is taking on the comments made by a politician. Maybe he should start by focussing on what the scientists are saying about his work.
He scoffs at others for misinterpreting what trick means but then explains it so eloquently (sarcasm) by saying this?! The “trick” (by which scientists generally mean a clever solution, i.e., a “trick of the trade”) was that the longer-term record could be viewed in the context of recent temperature measurements.
I’m sick to death of context. Why doesn’t he admit that context means he grafted temperture data onto proxy data.
“Wow, Mann is taking on the comments made by a politician.”
Yes. Everytime the scienticians try this they only sound lamer.
… according to NASA (y’know, the people he works for)
Actually he doesn’t. He’s employed by Penn State University. You’re probably thinking of Gavin Schmidt who is a climate modeler at NASA.
Although … both bald, beligerant and certifiable.
Easy mistake to make.
Mann is still sticking with 1998 being the warmest on record. This after 1934 admitted to being warmer by James Hansen himself.
I’m looking forward to hearing he’s become “Killer’s” foundation bitch.
@B.Humphrey: I stand corrected.
Gee do you think Mann is a progressive far left liberal much?
When in doubt in fantasyland of progressives attack Sarah Palin.
No science, no explaination about why they removed the 1960 decline in the data when it was collected and analyzed the exactly same way as the rest of it. If you see an unexplained change in the tree rings as a scientist should not have Briffa called into question the methodology and actually determined what the cause was and provided a solution to make the entire record reliable, you know the science part?
When you look at physical samples you cannot change methodology because the results do not show what you want, that is how crooked exploration juniors falsify drill samples, and when caught they have the same lame excuse. There were unexplained anomolies in the ore concentration so we changed methodology after 10m depth, which just happened to increase ore density 4000% to be more in line with the top section of the formation.
Ya we were all born stupid except for scientists, like you Micheal Mann, also the term trick was not used as a trick of the trade, spin that all you want. You said yourself via proxy of realclimate that you or your peers had never grafted the surface record onto the paleo-climate one, so either way you are a liar. So why should we believe you are not lying now?

“No researchers in this field have ever, to our knowledge, “grafted the thermometer record onto” any reconstruction. It is somewhat disappointing to find this specious claim (which we usually find originating from industry-funded climate disinformation websites) appearing in this forum.”
Anyone else had this problem?
when I clicked on the washington post link my computer froze, the mouse went dead…
and it went on for so long that I eventually turned off the power bar.
I know this is risky I could have lost data but it was spookey that nothing worked anymore on my computer….
Anyone?
Interesting how Mann avoids the subjects of data manipulating software code and missing data.
In the article Mann state:
“Briffa described a phenomenon in which the density of wood exhibits an enigmatic decline in response to temperature after about 1960. This decline was the focus of Briffa’s original article, and Briffa was clear that these data should not be used to represent temperatures after 1960”
In other words, the post 1960s tree ring data does not fit their story and they don’t understand the divergence, so gets rid of it. If present day tree-ring data does not correlate well with measured temperatures doesn’t this not at least cast some doubt on the suitability of using this kind of data as a proxy for past temperatures? Maybe I am wrong and someone can enlighten me.

I use Firefox, and yes, I had a page freeze a couple of times.(cookies galore) But finally got through to the comments section.
( I think the site is getting hammered) The comments section is worth a graze. As someone above noted Mann is getting shredded.
Illiquid Assets- you’re right on the money. I’ve been reading the same postings on RC.
That’s pretty standard garbage that gets thrown around at Real Climate. They always have an excuse for their inconsistencies. ‘Well tree rings don’t matter anyway because we have ice cores’ & ‘Well we don’t need that many temperature measurement stations anyway so who cares about data being mishandled’.
Steve, you’ll never get a straight answer explaining how they gather any confidence in their teperature reconstruction despite the divergence problem. They are too busy playing with their computer models.
And they sure are proud of their computer models predicting the cooling after the Pinatubo eruption.
Y’all know, there’s sumthun wron wit that thear Mann.
Whoah,
the comments to the article, are, how shall I put it delicately,
not terribly sympethetic. Actually, I can’t recall the last time I saw that much consistent anger in one comment thread directed at one person. Yikes.
He acts like a man caught.
All of this controversy can be laid to rest very easily. Provide other scientists/skeptics the access to the RAW data and source code for review as scientific method demands. If that is done and shows the same trend I will change my skepticism to a believer.
lame duck, mahann, oh mahann! The wimpy, the pathetic, the liar, the Global joke!
He tried attacking Sarah Palin because he saw the success of everyone else – does he even know that Sarah is not a PHD certified ‘climate sorcerer”? She has common sense and enjoys telling the truth. By injecting ’emotion’ this fool has just ditched any and all his ‘science’ credentials – he has stooped to the political junkie level of msm.
The comments on that article were grrrrrreat! Good grief — in the Washington Post no less! If Mann reads those comments he should be put on suicide watch. I was half expecting some one to call, “guillotine, guillotine” — hmmmmm.
If you’d like to see how disingenuous & dishonest the Rabid Left can be, look no further than this comment to Mann’s diatribe: May a Polar Bear land on your house.
What kind of wacko psychotic nut case would take a chance on doing irreversable damage to the planet, and destroy our drinking water and endanger clean air rather than deal with the possibility that these specialists may be right?
I puke on you.
Do you see how he/she/it groups in clean air & water with the falsehood of Global Warming?
G,
I use Firefox too, I thought someone had taken control of my computer or something…
thanks!
time to call for the ninja of nothingness , Dr. Fruitfly
the kamikaze of klimate change can throw himself to the deck of the great sinking ship of lies.
Mann is still getting clobbered in the comments at the link. That gives me great hope.
The gig is up.The goose is cooked. The scam is over. The MSM are toast. Copenhagen is just a city in Denmark, and Obama tooted his own horn again.
All that’s left to close the book on this story is the words from PMSH that he will not turn his back on Canada for the sake of some whackos.
Sleep well folks.
Mann, for years refuses to debate anyone with knowledge and expertise, and won’t submit data. His rank as a “black belt” scientist is unquestioned. Then a little, unqualified girl (Palin) ,critiques him and he blows up on the last day of Hopencraven , and he finally responds. Quit taking on only the little girls.
Mikey’s gravy train
Can be heard grinding
To a screaching halt
On frozen rails of reality
The steam is escaping the boiler
The coal is nearly spent
The stokers have abandonned
The Settled Science tent
Actually, Mann cannot see Penn State from his house. I am certain of this because I know where he lives, and I clean a couple houses in his neighborhood.
SNL skit – Sarah breaking a hockey stick over Mike’s head !!
