40 Replies to “Federal By-Election Results”

  1. So far the Liberals have won 9, 12, 14, and 21% of the popular vote in the four ridings. Third place across the board.
Must be that Ignatieff charm working for ’em.

  2. So with two wins, how many seats are they up to? I know they had 143 after the last election, but I seem to remember some by-elections since then…where do I find the official number?

  3. Before the by-elections:
    Conservatives (143)
    Liberals (77)
    Bloc Québécois (47)
    New Democrats (36)
    Independent (1)
    Vacant (4)
    After (if the numbers hold):
    Conservatives (145)
    Liberals (77)
    Bloc Québécois (48)
    New Democrats (37)
    Independent (1)

  4. Looks like the Tories will pick up a couple of seats, not a bad night.
Seat totals here. (not reflective of tonight’s results)

  5. A very good result. I’d have been content with the Tories getting one, so two is excellent for our government, especially in these adverse times. They’ve managed well, and the Opposition is looking well, Igneutered…

  6. The death of the Conservatives in Quebec has been greatly exaggerated apparently.
What did the average liberal candidate get tonight? Less than 20 percent.
The BlocTreason or the Dippers might for the opposition after the next election if current trends continue.

  7. Way to go CPC!!
I think the telling is more in the actual number of ballots cast over the number of registered voters as a reflection/barometer of what is actually happening.
In New West BC it reads a dismal turnout of less than 15%…(NDP holding onto Dawn Black’s seat)…no surprise there.
All one can learn from those figures is that the Electorate really aren’t in the mood to stomach another National election any time soon.

  8. Conservative average across 4 ridings 33.52%
NDP average across 4 ridings 24%
Liberal average across 4 ridings 14.5%
Bloc average across 4 ridings 22.5%
So Iffy the great Quebec hope finished lower than the Bloc even though the Bloc ran in only half the ridings while Stephen Harper the bane of Quebec politics won one of the ridings in Quebec and another in Nova Scotia.
Does anyone know if Iffy has his resume polished up so he can return to Harvard?

  9. Bummer about the New West-Coquitlam vote. That’s a big win for the Dips in a seat that has been razor-close for several elections. A couple of times when Paul Forseth was elected (as Reform the first few times) I voted for him and he won by about 100 votes. I don’t know why he didn’t run again; if he had it might have been closer. There really wasn’t any campaign, and I got the impression that Diana wasn’t all that small-c conservative.
OTOH, the good news is that the Libs are dead dead dead, even in a riding that has a fair number of immigrants.

  10. Cbc has their usual coverage. Maybe a minute on the results. Usually in by-elections the sitting gov’t takes a bit of a beating.Usually, but not tonight. The conservatives did very well, the liberals basically sucked big time. Therefore this night shall never be mentioned again in polite cbc circles.

  11. Stunning results for the Liberals, percentage-wise:
Nova Scotia: Cons 45.8, Liberals 21.3
    Quebec: Conservatives 42.4, Liberals 12
    New Westminster/Coquitlam: NDP 53.9, Cons 33.8, Liberals 7.7
    “Mr.Harper, you’re on probation…”
    …and ransacking Ignatieff’s house, apparently.

  12. I see on Bourque that McKenna is flogging a book. Seems like he may be the next messiah? Funny how Bourque appears to be in tune with the Libs.

  13. I hope the Liberal house keeps chasing it’s collective tail and doing the “Paul Martin dither” for the next couple of years. They have run their trick-bag dry of candidates who are electable. This is a great thing for all parties in Kanukistan.
This will give the small-c’s a chance to circle the wagons and undo some of the Liberal crap that has stripped us of our freedoms here in this great nation.

  14. Although I voted for Dilworth in New West-Coquitlam, I wasn’t too keen on her. Her record on Port Moody city council suggests she never saw a spending bill she didn’t like. She is a red tory. Mind you the Dipper’s Fin Donnelly is a dork.

  15. Way to go, Conservatives!
On CTV’s Power Play yesterday (or the day before, who’s counting?)…one of the guest panelists, an American expert on the economy, said that Canada is being well run. (The guest was very obviously not impressed with Pres. Obama.)

  16. Voter turnout in all four ridings sucked! Sucked I say. 22% of eliglible voters in Hochelaga! WTF! On the anniversary of the Berlin Wall crumbling and 2 days before Remembrance Day where so many gave their all for democracy and freedom no less.
Sad. Very sad. I fear the country is doomed. last one out, please turn off the lights.

  17. Nothing wrong with low voter turnout. Those that are informed and interested vote, those who vote based on a 30 second ad or their favorite color stay home. Turnout isn’t the problem it is made out to be.

  18. How will the Liberal Spin the results today!
Since they got a head start yesterday on the spin. EG: monday, Well we knew we were not in it in any of the ridings as they were always non liberal.
No afraid not guys this does not bode well on Ignatieffs performance, Even if you were not in it Your new leader’s performance would show better numbers for a finish in say 2nd, would you not?

  19. Yes, “chutzpahticular”, ‘saw that episode of CTV’s PP as well. The American guest panelist did say Canada is being very well run right now,it appeared it was much to the chagrin of the host, he didn’t even bat an eye at that praise, didn’t elaborate.
Guess by now we know the agenda of the MSM. If that had been praise for a Liberal government’s handling of the economy at this time it would have been reiterated.

  20. i watched the coverage on the national last night….lloyd had his concerned face on and fife was pretty much lost for words. hardly any mention of iggy…. another slanted report by the ctv liberal network.
    congratulations to harper!!!

I agree. I believe all potential voters should have to take a simple test before they are allowed to vote. Something like “How many provinces are there?” or “What was the year of confederation?”

  22. crap economy, h1n1, small scandal on stimulus spending, and typical bye election instability and history of the ruling party not doing well
And still the CP does very well – even in Quebec.
The desire for a majority government seems to be very strong indeed.

  23. We are ready for a majority.
I hope Harper plays the “Phase out of taxpayer contributions to political parties” again as part of a confidence vote or simply a promise on a future platform.
It made a lot of waves with the opposition parties and help form the wet petard “coalition” and the lefty MSM feigned outrage but I would bet anything most Canadian who “cares thus vote”, agree that tax dollars should not go to political parties for campaigning. I believe most voters think that parties should raise their own funds.
Of course the same rules should apply: No special interest groups or Corporations allowed and a cap should remain on individual donations.
If it was the case, frequent elections because of more frequent minorities would at least make it so that it’s not on the taxpayers back. It would also “discipline” politicians who care only about power. They would think twice before pulling the plug because it’s now their own grassroot money being gambled on an election.

  24. Good ’nuff! As for New West – Coquitlam,Burnaby etc., these are near hopeless ridings, where the likes of Svend and Bill Siksay and other disturbed working class heros hail from. They deserve whatever they get, which is worse than nothing.

  25. “I hope Harper plays the “Phase out of taxpayer contributions to political parties” again as part of a confidence vote or simply a promise on a future platform.”
That would ALMOST be better than sex. I dream of the day when these little socialist b*tches have to put their money where there mouths are. This would be a good start.

  26. Hmm, where is the comment from ‘hardboiled’?. Looks like there is trust in what PMSH and the Conservatives are doing!.

  27. “….Hmm, where is the comment from ‘hardboiled’?. .
Not just hardboiled. All the trolls seem to be uncharacteristically quiet today. Good thing too.

[..]Nothing wrong with low voter turnout. Those that are informed and interested vote, those who vote based on a 30 second ad or their favorite color stay home. Turnout isn’t the problem it is made out to be.[..]
    Precisely mine own sentiment…..
This is the critical mass that decides elections for the most part anyhooo…
Perhaps Harper can now govern like a majority with a minority—good stuff…

  29. The phrase making the blogs now, after the by election results, is the glorious but insightful moniker of being “IGNEUTERED”.
The LIEberal brand after all the H1N1 hysterics, the “your time is up” show down at the Parliamentary corral, is getting somewhat long in the tooth.
The by election results demonstrate conclusively that the LIEberal brand needs to be completely retooled from the ground up. The “natural governing party” is now “IG-NOTTED” by voters.
Voters have been “ignoculated” against the LIEberal virus!
    Cheers

  30. Whew. Thought maybe this might be the time for the Green Party to make great strides, but fortunately I was wrong. A quick glance at the GP home page doesn’t reveal any supporting propaganda for their by-election candidates, so maybe they’ve given up for the time being.
Lizzie does want a new global tax, however.

  31. Got a big chuckle out of all the comments. LOVE “Igneutered” and “Ignoculated”
I was worried that with four ridings up for grabs there would be lib and nipper skulduggery but it doesn’t seem to have made a difference if they even tried, which I think they did not.
Love the comments about the New West-Coquitlam riding. Some dippers are just overwhelmed with real life and simple addition.
