“The Taliban are indeed our enemy–but, what, me worry?”

Quite a few people are now saying that al Qaeda are the real AfPak threat, and the Taliban are just nasties with a local focus (see below). Those people should read this, by a NY Times reporter held captive for seven months. And that “local threat” includes nuclear-armed Pakistan (again, see below). What, me worry?

Over those months, I came to a simple realization. After seven years of reporting in the region, I did not fully understand how extreme many of the Taliban had become. Before the kidnapping, I viewed the organization as a form of “Al Qaeda lite,” a religiously motivated movement primarily focused on controlling Afghanistan.
Living side by side with the Haqqanis’ followers [more here and here], I learned that the goal of the hard-line Taliban was far more ambitious. Contact with foreign militants in the tribal areas appeared to have deeply affected many young Taliban fighters. They wanted to create a fundamentalist Islamic emirate with Al Qaeda that spanned the Muslim world…

  1. Eric (the mongoloid) Margolis should read this. But he wont because he is still stuck on stupid.

  2. Without the CBC and NYT, Margolis would be collecting pop bottles on the roadside.
He is not totally stupid, he is clever enough to avoid visiting A-stan.
More is the pity….I would pay to watch a video clip of some bearded savage hacking his head off.

  3. It is 2009. The Islamonazis have been saying this crap now for what, 20 years? Since they blew up the Marine Corps barracks, basically.
Why doesn’t any of the Left just take them at their word? They want us dead. Duh. Can we shoot back yet?

  4. True, Phantom. The Islamonazis, as you rightly labelled them, issued their proclamation a long time ago. It’s another one of those cases of “conformity to them, or die.” Well, give us Liberty or give us Death, but we’ll be forever damned if we just roll over and let it happen.
Fight them every way and everywhere you can. This is the new World War, but just not really so formal and conventional, since roadside bombs and civilian atrocities are now the enemy’s choice of offense, along with master-planning and strategies for missions of sabotage to cause death and destruction in massive proportions.
We need vigilance and unity of purpose on our side too, for any of us who cherish and promote freedom. It most certainly is “time to shoot back”. Oh, and while we’re at it, the slogan “Better DEAD than RED”, is now more applicable in the Liebral sense instead of Communist. (Subscribers to the Red Star excluded.)

  5. So right Phantom. This guy must be Rip Van Winkle incarnate. The news has been out there for 20 years. The Mackenzie Institute, Yossef Bodansky, Osamma bin Laden, Ayatollah Khomeini, we have plenty of sources reporting the obvious. Is the NYT signaling that the Left finally gets it?

  6. While opposition to these Islamic whackjobs is critical, our utmost concern has to be the decay within our own mis-guided Left (politicos, learning(?) institutions and media) that promotes the advancement of this insane cult-ology!
What do they think they will gain, and moreso, do they think they’ll be venerated and beloved and have special immunity with these dipshits when the inevitable subversion comes to pass?
The time has come guys, to take an assault on where the real rot lies- our very own intelligencia and the MSM.
And time to confront the resident Mullahs and community leaders- either renounce these practices and conform to the Canadian ethos or tell us where you really stand!
They all have to be discredited – ridiculed, confronted and made to account at evey turn. Shouting from the rooftops if necessary. But, we’ll no doubt just look around bewildered and ask ‘wtf happened’?
The majority of the population is not stupid (though it certainly appears that way at times), but they surely are oblivious to current events that are not related to the latest Hollywood, pop-culture or greenie issue. Green should be the least of our worries!

  7. What makes me sick is all this could have been avoided when they first started this Jihad in the 70s. If anyone would have been on the ball enough to see the danger rising with the hijacking of Planes & the Olympic killings.
Now we will have to pay with blood to stay free in the buckets.

Er, not quite . The (principally Palestinian) Middle Eastern terrorists of the Seventies weren’t actually jihadists. They were motivated by political rather than religious extremism.
