Post WW2 the US – primarily the Democrats – very much felt that the US should take on essentially the entire defense of the free world against the soviet bloc. Canada, the rest of the NATO nations, Japan and, to a lesser extent, France became wards of the American miltary force for protection. At the time this was welcomed by most everyone, but over time the atrophy of these nations’ martial culture and capacity made them increasingly dependent upon the US for protection. Like all those dependent upon someone else the beneficiary becomes increasingly hostile to the benefactor.
Breaking these dependency habits without destroying the alliance will be near-impossible and with the decline in American economic power seeming to be accelerating we may not have enough time to be prepared to meet the challenges that confront us.
(Similar malaise happened post WW1 on all of the allies parts, but that included the US and at the time the idea of nuclear conflagration and conflict with the communists was literally science fiction.)

We should remember who Marcus Tullius Cicero (106 – 46 BC) was, where he lived and when he lived before we can put this quote into context. I read an excellent biography about Cicero; “A pillar of Iron” Taylor Cauldwell, years ago and I have reread it 3 or 4 times since then; I would recommend it to anyone who is interested in saving their country from Totalitarianism and their people from slavery.
The Roman Legion in Cicero’s day was not the army that had won wars for themselves and the right to be free men in a Republic; the Roman Legion in the closing days of the Republic was peopled with mainly mercenaries and/or conscripts who were sent in to ‘fill in’ for a Roman citizen or had run into debt and choose the army instead of the jailhouse, slavery or death. If the soldiers were not paid they would not fight. The citizens of Rome felt ‘entitled’ to dissipation, adultery, blood sports, intrigue, drugs, wine, and fine food. Few Roman citizens, in the cities, worked for a living and the producers in the country were overtaxed to feed the welfare minions and the elite in the big cities. The ‘demands’ for bread and blood’ (entertainment) had become the ‘stuff of life’. Rome, in Cicero’s day was ripe for any invader with grit and the stomache for terror and violence. Roman citizens were soft, sentimental, lacked moral outrage (because they saw the lines crossed every day by themselves and their fellow citizens), and placid. Most of they did not know how to fight and were not inclined to fight. They scorned the commanders of the Legion and soldiers as unsophisticated bruts; not really fit for the society of moral/social decadance that ‘sophisticated’ Roman citizens considered the hight of civilization.
Cicero kept secret documents, damming the actions of his peers (Romans still had some sense of outrage), to stay alive. Cicero was a lawyer and knew the score (fight fire with fire); he also knew right from wrong.
Canada is a tougher nation than Rome or America, in the sense that many Canadians ‘know the score’ because this country has always been a colony and been forced to compete for the scraps from the big table. Because we grew up as a colony we produced better and faster than the ‘Mother country’ and thus we have always been less arrogant as a people but a lot tougher. Real Canadians support our troops and value the nation that they live in; we are resentful of ‘overlords’ because we have had overlords all though our history. United States has not; the Americans fought for and won their own independence and prosperity.
The enemy sent both nations a Trojan Horse (Political correctness and false tolerance for evil and evil doers) that played on the false guilt that strong people harbour for their own success (the Greatest Generation, springs to my mind). If the population of Canada is, by ratio ,increasingly immigants, and of cultures welcomed and ‘tolerated’ how can we support a military? Where are the Canadians that will suit up? Why would they sign up to fight the Taliban, for example,when they left their homeland to get away from the conflict? Or they are here sending money back ‘home’ to support the cause.

Why do we lack the will? Even in high school, I remember my teachers laughing about how the Americans will protect us while we pump more money into healthcare. Does that sound like a good idea now?
The divide between Americans and Canadians is too rich and complex a topic to cover all at once but what I will say is that our will should match our means. If we want to win in Afghanistan, we should go in to win, not do a half-half job.

Not so, I think in the case of Canada after the Korean War began (see my comments here, #4 and the one following). We then had a huge increase in defence spending and the size of our armed services. And remember Ike became president in 1953 to preside over the big NATO build-up, unimagined before Korea. We also actually built and exported CF-86s and CF-100s (a few) to Europe in the 50s since the US did not have the production capacity (F-86s).

Paul: it is not a question of race – it is a question of culture. In this case the judeo/Christian culture and the democratic system that sprung from it in the last 300 years. That is something worth defending. India is decidedly non-white yet has a system based upon it. That is the point of steyns book. The multi-cult support that the left has tried to jam down on us has to be resisted and not making the race / culture distinction is, as black mamba has noted above, giving our enemies on the left ammunition.

I think the country of Canada should be more discerning in its quest for immigrants. There was a huge influx of Europeans from war-torn countries that came into Canada after WW2–these folks were Caucasian, Christian, looking for a better life (and willing to work for it), and were instilled with the values of a democratic and pluralistic society. The next group of folks in the 60’s and early-70’s were from Third World countries which were either still colonies of Britain/had just been granted independence OR were educated people (nurses) from places like the Philippines–again most of these folks although not Caucasians, were educated, Christian, looking for a better life (and willing to work for it) and were instilled with the values of a democratic society (due to their upbringing as citizens of a colony). Canada had extremely strict standards for immigrants during this time-frame–the ability to speak either official language fluently, employable skills and I am sure there was an age cap of perhaps mid-30’s as the oldest. There was no “free” money and if your sponsor didn’t help support you–you were sent back to your country. Therefore, all these immigrants to Canada up to this point in time became Canadian (embraced Canadian values, raised their kids as Canadians, some only spoke English in the home to “divorce” themselves from their former culture and countries)or went back to their home countries.
This all changed in the 80’s, when it seems the doors of Canada were thrown wide open and anybody who claimed to be a refugee was let in. So, I don’t think it’s a “race” thing –there are non-Caucasians who are “old school” Canadians in the way they think and comport themselves and there are Caucasians who still see themselves as people from whichever nationality they originally came from living in Canada (some Italians come to mind and of course the Quebecers). I think what must be done is to scrap the multicultural agenda in government and society AND define what Canadian culture is all about (and if we happen to share a lot of the same culture as that of the USofA, that’s fine–since we’re both former colonies of Britain, we both have pluralistic societies, we’re both democracies with representative governments, we’re both Christian nations, we speak English, etc)
It’s true Canadians are sound asleep or at least distracted with pizza and beer in front of HNIC while their heritage, wealth, freedoms and sovereignty are about to be sold out from under them.
How may know what is in the Climate change treaty to be signed in Copanhagen in Dec.?
How many know, or care, that this treaty will have the heaviest impact on their nation, their lives and their prosperity than any other law passed in the last 100 years?
How many know that Harper has committed to follow Obama in selling out out nation?

I think that is initially where i came up with the segregation of whites in witch i was tring to say anybody who is a true canadian and embrasses our cutlural values should be allowed a baby bonus but even at that how do you distinguish .
And times are not good for the west at all from any angle .

Outside of the two world wars, Canada has never done much for its military. There was a brief moment in the early Cold War when we had a 125,000+ military but that was soon frittered away.
The truth is we have not really grown up yet. We were content to hide behind the aprons of the Mother Country and then just as happy to tuck ourselves safely behind Uncle Sam’s broad shoulders.
The sad part is that we are indeed a very wealthy country. A professional, well-equipped, regular military of 100,000 all up would hardly be much of a burden to an affluent First World nation of over 30 million people. That’s roughly an additional 30,000 personnel over our existing strength.
On top of that, a properly structured reserve component of 50,000 would give us the depth and personnel resources to sustain a good number of missions short of all-out general war.
A military of 150,000.
The UK, with a population of 60 million, and all kinds of fiscal woes, sustains 400,000. With a similar population, France has about 600,000.
How about a military with less than a third of it’s force pushing papers in NDHQ (Ottawa)?
Just look at the land mass and coastline Canada has and you can readily see that we are cronically undermanned for homeland defence, let alone aiding our allies. Time we pulled our weight in the world.

That’s one reason why I’ve always despised the term “Arctic Sovereignty”. It makes the Arctic seem somehow detached from the rest of the country.
