  2. It really is a pathology, isn’t it; it’s a sickness. There are four, four main entries at the top of the SDA blog on the latest round of the ongoing nobel peace prize idiocy, currently running 137 + 52 + 77 + 15 = 281 comments, and you open tonight’s Reader Tips with another waste of bytes on the same danm topic? How ’bout a useful reader tip, buddy? It’s sad, really.

    Read in this weeks National Review of a book by Sam Tanenhaus, a new release called “The Death of Conservatism” as reviewed by Jonah Goldberg. He is probably most famous for his bio of Whittaker Chambers. Luckily, I believe in resurrection, because the author calls today’s conservatives, angry, mean, close-minded, resentful, extremist, radical and at times deranged Jacobins, oh and “revanchist” – whatever. Goldberg goes on to say, according to the book – bad conservatives were jabbering radicals trying to turn back the clock. And I ask: What’s so bad about that?

  7. It has been put forward by several spokesmen including the Nobel people that Barak Obama won the Peace Prize because of future hopes that he has inspired. But surely he will feel pressured to get the Americans out of Afghanistan. This in turn will mean that Canada would have to leave also, along with the other contributors. Surely this would mean massive slaughter by the Taliban and their cohorts. Women will be beaten for going to school, and anyone whosoever assisted the allied troops will face torture and probably death. When or if this occurs, can we ask for the award back?

  9. It’s a nice version, but nothing touches the track from Can’t Buy A Thrill. Elliott Randall, who I’d never heard of before or since, played one of the most exultant riffs I’ve ever heard. I used to turn up the volume on the fade out, just to catch the last few bars. If ever a song cried out for an extended version, this was it, but that just wasn’t Becker and Fagen’s style. More the pity.

    There are some instructional vids of Baxter on Youtube – the one that I just watched on rhythm guitar should be mandatory for anyone learning the instrument.

  13. Yep…good choice of music-vids tonight. Must say I prefer the 2000 look to the ’78 long haired stuff. Is that when the guys started down the emmasculating path?
    And this could be why the CPC numbers are up in Ontario.

  14. Okay, you must mean Reelin’ in the Years – I didn’t listen to that one just now because it’s always on the radio, so I wasn’t thinking of it when I googled the album.
    So I’m slow, but at least I didn’t mention… American Idol or whatever it was.
    Great music, but I’m afraid that Donald Fagen might be a vampire.

    The ant works hard in the withering heat and the rain all summer long, building his house and laying up supplies for the winter. The grasshopper thinks the ant is a fool and laughs and dances and plays the summer away. Come winter, the shivering grasshopper calls a press conference and demands to know why the ant should be allowed to be warm and well fed while he is cold and starving. CBS, NBC , PBS, CNN, and ABC show up to provide pictures of the shivering grasshopper next to a video of the ant in his comfortable home with a table filled with food. America is stunned by the sharp contrast.
    How can this be, that in a country of such wealth, this poor grasshopper is allowed to suffer so? Kermit the Frog appears on Oprah with the grasshopper and everybody cries when they sing, ‘It’s Not Easy Being Green.’
    ACORN stages a demonstration in front of the ant’s house where the news stations film the group singing, “We shall overcome.” Then Rev. Jeremiah Wright has the group kneel down to pray to God for the grasshopper’s sake.
    President Obama condemns the ant and blames President Bush, President Reagan, Christopher Columbus, and the Pope for the grasshopper’s plight.
    Nancy Pelosi & Harry Reid exclaim in an interview with Larry King that the ant has gotten rich off the back of the grasshopper, and both call for an immediate tax hike on the ant to make him pay his fair share. Finally, the EEOC drafts the Economic Equity & Anti-Grasshopper Act retroactive to the beginning of the summer.
    The ant is fined for failing to hire a proportionate number of green bugs and, having nothing left to pay his retroactive taxes, his home is confiscated by the Government Green Czar and given to the grasshopper.
    The story ends as we see the grasshopper and his free-loading friends finishing up the last bits of the ant’s food while the government house he
    is in, which, as you recall, just happens to be the ant’s old house, crumbles around them because the grasshopper doesn’t maintain it.
    The ant has disappeared in the snow, never to be seen again. The grasshopper is found dead in a drug related incident, and the house, now abandoned, is taken over by a gang of spiders who terrorize the ramshackle, once prosperous and once peaceful, neighborhood.
    The entire Nation collapses bringing the rest of the free world with it. MORAL OF THE STORY: Be careful how you vote in 2010.

    D’oh. I guess that’s what I get for not tuning in every night.
    For the record, it’s not necessarily the vid posted that makes LNR so appealing, it’s the 6 or 8 videos I watch after, or, if I’m not familiar with the artist, the hours of research I put in figuring out why the heck I didn’t already know about them.
    Nonetheless, a short thank you for broadening my horizons Vitruvius; now, if only I could get into cheese….

  21. Saw Steely Dan at the Montreal Jazz Festival in 2008. I’m still buzzing. Jon Herington makes a great replacement for all previous SD guitartists, IMO.
    Funny, I was just reading about Jeff Baxter’s impressive new career earlier this week.

  23. The New Liberalism wants decline and the new Liberalism sees Obama as very capable in fostering decline. Maybe it’s innate.
    Decline for the middle class but not the Latte Liberal elite class. They believe the peasants never should have had the good life in the first place – dishwashers, the second vehicle, winter vacations, room temperature, …

  30. Anyone see Nicholas Stern on Alan Greg tonight (TVO) — also available on the Internet, I believe. To me it is astonishing to watch someone speak with complete conviction about a concept based on utter nuttiness. Even if we believed in AGW, Stern seems to have no appreciation for what he is expecting developed countries to do. Doubt does not seem to be a part of his thinking processes. This might seem to be an exaggeration, but it reminds be of the Third Reich — to the extent that Stern and other’s on the climate change bandwagon are totally convinced of the rightness of their bizarre grasp of reality.

  31. Walking Eagle!!!!
    Michael Ignatieff was invited to address a major gathering of the Indian Nation in B.C. this summer.
    He spoke for almost an hour on his future plans for increasing every First Nation’s present standard of living if he were elected Prime Minister. He assured them he was always urging the present government to address more of the native community’s concerns.
    At the conclusion of his speech, the Tribe presented Ignatieff with a plaque inscribed with his new Indian name – “Walking Eagle”. The proud Ignatieff then departed in his motorcade, waving to the crowds.
    A news reporter later inquired to the group of chiefs of how they came to select the new name given to Ignatieff. They explained that Walking Eagle is the name given to a bird so full of shit it can no longer fly.

    Next up is “worldwide shortage of water”. People already willingly pay more for bottled water (because it’s “safe”) than they would for, say, beer or pop.
    The ace-in-the-hole for the sponges is that the western societies’ primary targeted demographic is getting older (and therefore more concerned with their own health).
    It’s pretty obvious to me how things will work out.

In a sign that more banks are under great pressure from the recession, 34 financial institutions did not pay their quarterly dividends in August to the Treasury on funds obtained under the Troubled Asset Relief Fund (TARP). The number almost doubled from 19 in May when payments were last made, and also raised questions about Treasury’s judgment in approving these banks as “healthy,” a necessary step for them to get TARP funding.
    “The banks are not paying their dividends because they are worried about preserving capital,” says Eric Fitzwater, associate director of research at SNL Financial.

    Maybe it is all just a misunderstanding. Maybe they intended to award him the “Appease” Prize…and they interpreted it as “a Peace Prize”.

    I almost did this to my Tele but went with Mod Shop Noiseless instead. Already have too many humbuckers in the house. Albert Collins was the first guy I ever saw put Humbuckers on a Tele. Big killer tone. Some good stuff on YouTube of him.
