Germany’s Social Democrats take a beating:
The BBC’s Steve Rosenberg in Berlin says the result seems a disaster for the Social Democrats (SPD), who could have their lowest share of the vote since World War II.
The SPD have shared power with Mrs Merkel’s CDU/CSU in an awkward grand coalition since the last elections in 2005.
An exit poll for ZDF television gave the CDU/CSU 33.5%, SPD 23.5% and the FDP, Mrs Merkel’s preferred partners, 14.5%.
This would give the centre-right alliance, with 48% in total, a narrow majority over the SPD and the two other major parties, the Greens and the Left, both of which increased their share of the vote.

While the rest of the world moves toward economic sanity, US voters are counting down the days until the November, 2010 mid-term elections.
Hmmm right of Center.
Kinda looks like Obi is doing for Germany what he’s doing for Canada, who wants a lefty after seeing that idiot.
catching a glimpse of the future of the greens. one of the most successful one issue parties since the end of the war.
are you listening Ms May? Ms IfundamentalyagreeCanadiansarestupid?
p.s. if you are listening, that comment cost your party my vote for as long as you call yourself the leader.
Maybe there’s hope for the old country yet;
take that linkie losers!
That was the change I think Americans voted for in ’08 but got something very different. In 2010 things are shaping up to be a real rout for the dems. And the next potus will very likely be a GOP nominee or HRC.
I heard the CBC radio reporter in Germany giving the details sounding like she had razor blades in her mouth. Iggy can’t be liking it either.
curious_george;
While I can’t disagree that Ms. May’s comment about Canadian’s being stupid is a good enough reason not to vote Green, most of us figured out not to do that because of the sheer loopiness of her enviro-lefty views. Wasn’t there anything about those that had you wondering.
RE”MERKEL”BLE”!!
Angela comes up with a solid centre right coalition. The CDU/CSU get out their jar of halo-polisher.

The concern with a “right wing” party” getting power in Germany comes with it’s own scary talking points already in place. But I think the people would vote for anybody who could bring back some pragmatic common sense to their country.
I remember the uproar in Louisiana when David Duke started making inroads into government. The left had fits about it. The trouble was that it wasn’t racist voting for him, it was white working class people that were being shut out of the American Dream because of things like Affirmative Action. These people probably weren’t nor ever had been racist. They just had no other choice.
To quote some smart Jewish guy from the olden days. “A drowning man will even grab the tip of a sword to save himself”.
Will Germany finally have her own iron lady?
Which is it? Are the Greens one-issue or envirolefty? I can’t sort out the conservative doublethink on this one.
No doublethink,MG1. They are BOTH. I know that is hard for lefties to grasp,more than 1 thought at a time.
I sooooooo can’t wait until this headline – “Germany’s Social Democrats take a beating” – is Americanized!
Question: When the U.S. Dems are handed a major defeat, how will their bought & paid for media outlets try to spin it?!
Congratulations Mrs. Merkel. The right choice, IMO.
Yes, there are some positives in the world, despite Obama.
– Germany now has a centre-right government
– Sweden has a centre-right government
– Canada has a centre-right government (almost)
– Italy has a centre-right government (hmmm, well, I am not sure this is something to celebrate)
– France has a centre-right government (ditto)
– Mexico has a centre-right government
(Is there nothing Obama can’t do?)The evidence is thin….almost wishful thinking but it would seem that a lot of nations/societies are discarding the lefty/socialist template in reaction.
The US is having teaparties and Germany has an election—-identical results.
Copanhagen is shaping up to be a big disappointment for the UN.
Perhaps we should be grateful to little Kim and Ahmadinerjacket for diverting the world away from the AGW insanity.
