I don’t know how small the percentage of politicians there are who actually want to government in the best interests of their citizens, but I suspect it is very small and fleeting.
It is about power and ego and little else. It’s about the history books later and the fabulous perks right now.
The average intellect of the political class is not very high and their ability to truly understand what their job is and what their responsibility is are secondary to understanding the life-style that they will enjoy while in office.
I don’t know of a better way to organize or govern ourselves, but there has to be a better way of choosing who our leaders will be and also to make sure that they will know something about what they are doing.

Really? They’ll have a tough time, Jim? I thought there are some big differences. I thought last winter’s Coalition was a formal written agreement with Ignatieff’s signature on it whereas Harper has signed onto nothing. But to Jim, there’s no difference. And I thought the Coalition would have had the NPD, you know Jim, actually IN gov’t with a slate of cabinet ministers, whereas after yesterday’s vote the NDP is still in opposition and will remain there. But to Jim, there‘s no difference. And I thought that for the coalition to survive the BLOC would be given a de facto veto over all legislation since the Liberals and NDP combined wouldn’t have enough votes to pass anything — a certainty when you consider that there would be a healthy, very robust and what you could expect to be an extremely angry (justifiably so) 143 strong Conservative opposition, noting for Canadians at every opportunity that from BC to Newfoundland all bills passing through parliament are only doing so as a result of a separatist party that wasn’t even an option on their election ballot sniffing over all legislation, deciding what gets passed on our behalf and what doesn‘t. But to Jim, there‘s no difference. And I thought the coalition would have had the BLOC agreeing to support all matters of confidence for 18 months whereas yesterday, and until the next election, the BLOC will vote for or against matters of confidence on an issue-by-issue basis, of its own free will and not signing onto any agreement, which is what they’ve always done and how minority parliaments normally work anyways. But to Jim, there’s no difference.
In spite of the facts, in spite of the obvious differences we can expect a lot more of this from MSM in their attempt at muddying the waters, arguing semantics, chalking up the differences between the Coalition and yesterday’s events as insignificant and thus, not worthy of analysis or further discussion. They are doing this obviously to try and take a way what they know will be a very effective card for PMSH to play in the next election. But it ain’t gonna work.

The NDP/CPC coalition notion is laughable, as has been nicely pointed out above. The difference between giving the NDP cabinet posts and caucus membership and simply borrowing an idea or two on occasion is huge.
After all, Harper is leading a “minority” government facing opposition benches full of socialists from one end to the other. Canada is a centre left country for the most part, so that reality should be respected.
A little reasonable cooperation with the NDP now and then will do nothing but raise Harper’s status … the “cold fish” thing might not stick as well.
It’s clear that Canadians do not want an election at this time and will punish whoever forces one. The Party stupid enough to trigger an election is hooped … the parties that cooperate at least a bit, will likely gain status among the only group who count in elections … the middle. The only time partisans count in elections is if they stay home (ie: McCain), or if they turn out to work the election and donate cash (Palin).
