Why this blog?
Until this moment I have been forced to listen while media and politicians alike have told me "what Canadians think". In all that time they never once asked.
This is just the voice of an ordinary Canadian yelling back at the radio -
"You don't speak for me."

How juvenile. Politics has always been a sleazy sport, but Canadian politics takes it to a new low.
Each party gets $1.95 per vote from the taxpayer, and this is how the Conservatives spend their share of the swag?
I’ll stay home next time.
I like it. I like it a LOT. 🙂
rhebner:
get over yourself.
if rick mercer did this on the cbc (read our dime) you would think it hilarious.
They get what they deserve … the sooner Canada can park the Liberals in deep opposition, the better … so many people are fooled into voting for them every time out, to be the unwitting enablers of their sense of entitlement … and I doubt very much that 90% of those voters get anything in return except frequent views of the flag … you can go out to the town square if that’s what you need.
This whole fall campaign is transparently the result of impatience over having to wait for further patronage and further influence peddling for the Liberal establishment, they have nothing to offer and everything to gain for themselves.
I also like it ….a lot.
Uninformed LIEberals I see. Actually not one penny comes out of publtc funds. This is spending money donated (something the LIEberals and Biffy wish they had) to the Cons to spend as they feel that will help spreading the TRUTH about the LIEberals and in particular Biffy.
It sure saves mea lot of research time about Biffy – THANKS
“I’ll stay home next time.” rhebner Wow, you will not even vote for your own party – I guess the truth ads are working. After all only people that do not believe in Canada will not vote in a Canadian election – like Biffy not voting in Canada all those years while being an “American Citiczen.” I will not encourage you not to vote, but if you cannot get off your seat to support you own party, you are to immature to vote any way.
Me three, but I think I’ll stay home too, unless Harper does something, ya know, conservative.
He could start by cancelling the gun registry.
LOL, It’s pretty good!
A little Easter egg that I found is when you are at the homepage and mouse over the “ignatieff ME!” icon in the top left (make sure you have your speakers on) it has ignatieff saying me.
Me four.
richfisher; I don’t get it. How do you expect them to cancel the gun registry? Will the NDP or BLOC support them in a vote to dismantle it? Past experience would indicate not.
And the worst case scenario; a Liberal Minority government. That registry would be used to seize your guns. And the BLOC and NDP would be in full support.
Think it over. What do you want?
You are stuck with the Registry until there is a Majority Conservative government. Close your eyes; take three deep breaths; and think it over.

Uh, rhebner, the Tories tried to eliminate the party subsidy last December, and we all remember how that turned out, right? Take your self righteous poseur keister elsewhere.
IgnatIeff putting the “I” back in polItIcs.
This has been out for ages.
Sheesh Dijon is looking better and better….I miss that little moronic prof.
Ignatieff loves to quote Shakespeare. In keeping with this I submit a similarity between him and MacBeth:
Throughout Shakespeare’s tragic play Macbeth makes several bad decisions. By the end of Act V, the consequences of these decisions catch up to him and result in his mental deterioration and downfall.
Macbeth’s tragic flaw, his blind ambition, is a large contributing factor to his mental deterioration.
In the course of the play, Macbeth has a tendency to make decisions out of his desire for power. Macbeth becomes over powered by greed and murders Duncan so that he may become king. (et tu Bob Rae? Dion?)
Macbeth’s tendency toward false hope and over-confidence is also a driving force in his mental deterioration.
Macbeth was over-confident, and as a result unprepared for battle, resulting in his tragic death.
Macbeth laughs and says, “That will never be/ Who can impress the forest, bid the tree/ Unfix his earth-bound root?” (the ads in the forest?)
Clown Party: “Actually not one penny comes out of publtc funds. This is spending money donated (something the LIEberals and Biffy wish they had) to the Cons to spend as they feel that will help spreading the TRUTH about the LIEberals and in particular Biffy.”
Not true. Donations to political parties in Canada are tax deductible, so that, for instance, a person who contributes $400 receives $300 of it back on his income tax return. A $400 donation costs the taxpayer $100; the remaining $300 is picked up by the Canadian taxpayer.
After the CPC (presumably) ends the $1.95 subsidy to political parties, it should move on to remove this tax preference too.
By the way, that clip of Ignatieff is a great catch by the CPC. It has the potential to do more damage to him and the Liberals than just about anything else in his past — and that’s saying something.
“I am the one I’ve been waiting for!” ~ Canada’s American PM in Waiting.
“But Ignatieff’s ratings have been on steeper decline than his party’s since summer’s end. He has yet to articulate a compelling narrative, not only for an election campaign but for his own leadership.
Having forced voters to give him a reluctant second look, the Liberal leader is so far failing to reintroduce himself to them on winning terms.”

Here is a tip for ignatieff – free of charge:
Visit a dentist. It is very hard to fake sincerity when your teeth are grey and crooked.
Fire the ad strategist who suggested a full face close up of those teeth in your ad.
Stop licking your lips oizard like when you talk.
Control those facial grimaces.
All of these traits distract from the message which is basically nothing more than “Anything you can do IIIII can do better-IIII can do anything better than you.”
It does not fit the image. Hint: watch yourself on TV with the sound turned off – tres creepy n’est pas?
Thanks MJ for correcting me on the comment I made. I think it is money well spent. Gets the message out there.

“This isn’t politics. This is psychotherapy.”
…-
“Michael Ignatieff and the Liberal Party undergo psychotherapy
It is rare for a politician to reveal the base motives for his actions. We all suspect they are there, but publicly the reasons given for doing this or supporting that are mature ones. The weight of responsibility, protecting the common good, the obligation of government — and so on.
Michael Ignatieff, on the other hand, seems to lack this sort of reflexive filer all politicians have. Why will the Liberals support the Employment Insurance legislation? Because it will make Jack Layton and the NDP look bad, and presumably that will make Michael Ignatieff and the Liberals feel better.
This isn’t politics. This is psychotherapy.”

“After the CPC (presumably) ends the $1.95 subsidy to political parties, it should move on to remove this tax preference too.”
Why? These are two separate and distinct situations. The political contribution tax credit is based on contributions made voluntarily by taxpayers to the party or candidate of their choice. On the other hand, the $1.95 is an outright subsidy over which the taxpayer has no control.
The Conservatives could get along quite nicely without the $1.95. The other parties …. not so much.
– from clownparty “I’ll stay home next time.” rhebner Wow, you will not even vote for your own party …”
I’m not sure what that means, but I don’t have a party. I don’t belong to a political party because there is not a ‘conservative’ party in Canada that I can vote for.
I do my duty, show up on election day, and reject my ballot. It counts as a vote, and it shows my disregard for what the Tories have become.
They can take the high road and govern like adults , or they can keep building websites like this.
I am of two minds on the tax credit for donations.:
No question it amounts to directing governement funds to political parties – funds from other taxpayers who do not agree with the party recieving the donation.
But raising funds under the current system is very difficult even without the credit. and politicians starving for money can be easily corrupted under the current system which is very loosey goosey on the tracking of money and money laundering – i.e. the Demarais way. Loans and loan guarantees to parties are allowed and they should not be as are cash donations.
So I would argue that the deduction/credit should remain until the loan loophole is closed and cash donations outlawed. also the personal limit should be eliminated while at the same time all donations should be made public real-time via the internet and any breaking of the rules should have mandatory jailtime as a penalty.
“Christian Heritage”, rhebner? Or “Libertarian”? How about “Western Block” if you live in Western Canada?
“It counts as a vote”
No, it doesn’t. It counts for nothing, to no one. No one is impressed by an intentionally spoiled ballot or a refusal to vote. It just squanders a hard fought right.
Even if you cast a vote for a candidate who cannot win, you serve notice that the winner has to watch over his shoulder. Positions have been lost by as little as one vote, even on recount (participated, or rather didn’t) in a local vote not very long ago. The least desirable candidate won by one miserable vote. I should have voted, I didn’t, because I assumed a slam-dunk for the incumbent).
Biffjr: “Why? These are two separate and distinct situations. The political contribution tax credit is based on contributions made voluntarily by taxpayers to the party or candidate of their choice. On the other hand, the $1.95 is an outright subsidy over which the taxpayer has no control.”
There is no tax preference as generous as the one associated with political donations. Why is that? Why should we (I contribute too) receive back as much as 75 cents on every dollar that we contribute? Do you think it might have to do with the fact that politicians made this law and that the policy benefits their parties — and therefore their day-to-day working lives — directly?
Before anyone criticizes my suggestion to end the tax preference for all political donations, maybe he (or she) could explain why these donations receive the richest pay-back to the tax-filer in the Canadian tax code.
My opinion is that people shouldn’t be forced to support certain political parties (I’m thinking of the subsidy), and that if people want to support political parties, they should do it on their own dime (I would do so, but not as much).
Anyway, Biffjr, contrary to your assertion above, the Canadian taxpayers’ money subsidizes an individual’s political contribution, whether they want their money to go to the Libs (or Cons or NDP or Bloc) or not. You do realize, don’t you, that you’re subsidizing another person’s political donations to the Libs, NDP and Bloc through this tax deduction?

skip,
a rejected ballot is not a spoiled ballot. It is a vote, and counted as such. Dig around the Elections Canada website and you’ll find it to be true.
A few elections ago, there was a chap in our riding running under the Freedom Party banner. He got my vote, but he hasn’t been back since.
neo,
Hey if Jack or any other opposition finds it in their interest to vote for a piece of legislation then congratulations to them. Blank cheque support is as silly as blind opposition.
Iggy has gone from one to the other, Layton has left blind opposition behind for a middle stance amd Duceppe, that canny old seperatiste has stayed just where he wants to be….I cant stand his goals but I sure as heck respect his tactics….
Nobody ultimately cares why there is no election they just care if there is, because they (as a voter) now have to do soemthing. Layton is tactically correct, now is not the time to make voters come to a decision. Mor eimportantly there are things they can get done.
Iggy….well, he has moved to the next level of his training, parody of a politician, first stage is babe in the woods.
Amazing, high school never ends. Those guys at the Conservative propaganda center are absolutely brilliant. They defined Dion, now since Iggy won’t say what he stands for, if anything, are defining him. It truly is a well oiled machine and is highly affective. The more I see those “just visiting adds” the more I find them funny as its the same stupid picture of him getting off the plane, waving to everyone, with some new hilarious fact.

Duceppe cockily proclaims that he will not support the government again. How can anyone make such a stupid statement and expect to be taken seriously? How can one automatically reject future legislation if no one knows what it’s going to consist of?
I guess when you only run candidates in one province, you don’t need to be taken seriously.

Too bad it’s just a figure of speech. Oh well, a girl can dream. And carry matches.
“a rejected ballot is not a spoiled ballot. It is a vote, and counted as such. Dig around the Elections Canada website and you’ll find it to be true.”
I just did. A rejected ballot and a spoiled ballot are one and the same, and they are NOT counted in the vote towards any candidate. They are only kept in order to validate the total number of votes cast against the list of electors. In a recount, they may be re-examined for rejection.
Spoiling a ballot remains a foolish endeavour if you have any belief whatsoever in any kind of elected, representative government. Showing up to spoil a ballot is equivalent to Obama attending Congress and voting “present”. Its only a participatory democracy if you actually participate.

Government lives to fight another day Module body

OTTAWA (Reuters) – Canada’s minority Conservative government easily survived a budget vote on Friday, as expected, but it must now find a way to deal with a more threatening non-confidence motion expected early next month.
Legislators voted 224-74 to authorize budget spending. Had the government lost, Canada would have faced its second election in a year and the fourth in just over five years.
Two opposition parties — the left-leaning New Democrats and the separatist Bloc Quebecois — had said beforehand they would not bring down the Conservatives over the vote.
But the Conservatives still face a non-confidence motion soon from the main opposition Liberals, who say they have lost confidence in the government’s handling of the economy.
Polls show the Conservatives would most likely gain another minority if an election were held now. They won the January 2006 and October 2008 elections, but each time won only a minority of seats in Parliament.
That means the government needs the backing of at least one opposition party to stay in power and somewhat bizarrely its only bet in the confidence vote is the New Democratic Party, normally among the government’s toughest critics.
NDP leader Jack Layton, his party dropping steadily in most recent polls, this week hinted his party would keep the Conservatives in power until Parliament approved draft legislation that would boost benefits for the unemployed.
NDP officials expect a final vote on the benefits will be after the Liberals’ proposed non-confidence motion, suggesting the New Democrats could keep the government alive.
Liberal legislators jeered the New Democrats as they voted with the government on Friday. The New Democrats have in the past vehemently attacked the Liberals for backing the Conservatives on crucial votes.
Bloc Quebecois leader Gilles Duceppe said his party would definitely vote with the Liberals on a non-confidence motion, making clear the pressure is now on the New Democrats.

Ontario’s governing Liberals won a midtown Toronto by-election race last night, cruising to victory despite spending scandals that have dogged Premier Dalton McGuinty all summer.
Eric Hoskins, a 48-year-old family physician, replaces former cabinet minister Michael Bryant, who left provincial politics in June, in the riding of St. Paul’s.
“I am very excited about this new adventure,” Dr. Hoskins said at his jam-packed victory party at a Toronto pub.
He was introduced to the cheering crowd of Liberal supporters by Mr. McGuinty.
“It’s my great honour to introduce our St. Paul’s champion,” the jubilant Premier said.
Dr. Hoskins won by a wide margin in a Liberal stronghold that had been held by Mr. Bryant for 10 years. Mr. Bryant won the seat three times before leaving the government to run Toronto Mayor David Miller’s new economic development agency. He stepped down from the agency this month after he was charged in the death of cyclist Darcy Allan Sheppard.
Dr. Hoskins was in a hotly contested race with Progressive Conservative candidate Sue-Ann Levy, 52, a columnist at the Toronto Sun. NDP candidate Julian Heller, a lawyer, came in third.
Dr. Hoskins won 13,192 votes, leaving him well ahead of Ms. Levy, who won 7,851 votes, based on results from all 238 polls posted on Elections Ontario’s website early Friday morning. Mr. Heller received 4,677 votes. Turnout was low at the polls, with only about 25 per cent of the 82,500 eligible voters casting ballots.
The fact that Dr. Hoskins won by a wide margin in a Liberal stronghold shows that the spending scandals dogging the McGuinty government did not resonate on the doorsteps of voters, observers said.
David Docherty, a professor of political science at Wilfrid Laurier University, said he expected voters would have punished the Liberals over scandals at eHealth Ontario and the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corp. that have left the McGuinty government on the defensive for months. “People are thinking that this is a government that did not do enough to get out in front of this, that they were just kind of turning a blind eye to what was going on in these arm’s length agencies,” Prof. Docherty said before the outcome of last night’s by-election.
Tim Woolstencroft, managing partner with the Strategic Counsel polling firm, cautioned about reading too much into the results.
“By-elections are not a good predictor of general elections,” he said.
Ms. Levy and Mr. Heller campaigned hard to turn the by-election into a referendum on the McGuinty government’s plans to harmonize the provincial sales tax with the federal goods and services tax. But the blended tax does not take effect until next July, and there are few indications that most Ontarians have yet to seriously consider how it will affect them. The tax will result in higher prices on everything from haircuts to lawyers’ fees, but it will lower costs for businesses.
The by-election results do not gloss over challenges confronting the McGuinty government, Prof. Docherty said.
After six years in power, Mr. McGuinty has lost control of his own agenda as he deals with revelations uncovered by the Tories of lavish wining and dining by employees at two of his government’s arm’s length agencies, he said.
Mr. McGuinty told reporters last night that the results indicate that voters think his government is moving in the right direction.
“Elections are always more complicated than one particular issue,” he said. “I guess people want to know, ‘what’s our record.’ We’ve been around for six years. Our record is inescapable.”
This was the second by-election race since the Liberals cruised to a second majority in the 2007 provincial election. Former Progressive Conservative Leader John Tory was defeated in the Lindsay-area riding of Haliburton-Kawartha Lakes-Brock last March.
The Liberals now have 72 of the 107 seats in the legislature, the Tories 25 and the NDP 10.
Iggy going to take in a ploughing match next week..hoping to bury a lot of puffin poo.Old Owl Oliver on Power Play commented that Iggy does enjoy the smell of a barn! I’m sure the farmers will enjoy his highness appearing.
What is important is economic debate at the end of day here And foreign policy to do trade for having security to do so in long and short term
The rest is nonsense all is power and money in grid or Mafia under table either with sell the seat or with sell the weapon they are in.,
the group of army from USA moved to Afghanistan must back to USA and new group work there since those group when they were in Iraq they faced god knows may be US army put more blow up bomb we can expect US army anything .Now they moved to Afghanistan more and we faced more blow up bomb in Afghanistan. Some thing fishy or may be they US army scared Italian and others to only stay in Ugandan Or they scared Russian if they sell more weapons to Afghan or Iran
May be they need to ask Iran to take care of Taliban power down and bring two arrested American back to USA when president of Iran coming next week to UN in New York Iran can help Taliban out and bring more restricted Muslim as Afghani want it and made new relationship between Iran and US open but I feel fishy smell of US army increased and more suicide bomb we seen now!Or may be Obama tried to put concentrate to Muslim fight and less to health care and Acore under question.if we open can of full of worm we can see anything this is take so much time to stop corruption from both sides nobody know why they do act like this! Or may not what they do best
While this is different kind of Democrat shape are working in USA,We can still use the same model for Liberal in Canada as well. In liberal also some are toward left and some toward right some like gay some do not .The disagreement of Canadian parties over economic is similar like obama challenge is that. all parties must get united and think about all level of people very rich, rich and mid to poor to made sure their economic challenge take care of every group to win this game in long term but we can say Osama main challenge is that even in Democrat liberal are divide in several branches .That is reason Obama tried to get other Republican to say what they say that he can not see for debate since He is a lawyer and like to know both side of story. I think it does not matter liberal or conservative this is matter of how they take care of pubic interest over each matter to debate it. In several layers of politic

Classical Democrat In this latter sense, classical liberalism is sometimes called laissez-faire liberalism, every public power since the world is civilized, is a detestable principle that we cannot grow but by the lowering of our neighbors! There is nothing but mischief and malignity of heart that is satisfied with that principle, and interest is opposed to it. Essentially they follow classic liberalism, merging constitutionalism with free markets and centering the differences on the influences of social liberalism [3] and conservatism.
Historically, the party has favored farmers, laborers, labor unions, and religious and ethnic minorities; it has opposed unregulated business and finance, and favored progressive income taxes. In foreign policy, internationalism (including interventionism) was a dominant theme from 1913 to the mid-1960s. In the 1930s, the party began advocating welfare spending programs targeted at the poor.
Social Democrate deal with social issues such as : for educational reform, human rights Discrimination, LGBT rights, Reproductive rights (birth control), Embryonic Stem cell research, under the strictest ethical guidelines. Legal issues such as Torture, USA PATRIOT Act, Right to privacy, Gun control, Death penalty. . ( they could be socially liberal and economically conservative)
Conservative Democrats (economic liberalism )deal with foreign policy Invasion of Afghanistan, Israel, Iran, Iraq, China, Russia , Europe, African and Unilateralism and political issues such Democrat platform and political status regard to countries such as Puerto Rico. And economic Issues Minimum wage, Renewable energy and oil, Fiscal policy, Health care reform, Environment, College education, Trade agreements, Alternative Minimum Tax. ( they could be socially liberal and economically conservative ,as is the case with those called variously classical liberals, neoliberals, libertarians, and conservative liberals/liberal conservatives. )
Progressive Democrats of America , deal with social mores, human nature, and morality on grounds of positive vs negative liberties as marriage, the family, monogamy and gender roles and gender identity, abolition of slavery, right to vote for women and civil rights.
Libertarian Democrat Democratic positions on such issues as civil rights and separation of church and state are more closely aligned to their own than the positions of the Republican Party.
Modern liberalism in the United States started to develop in the late 19th Century in response to three major problems with the Laissez-faire capitalism[not in citation given] of the Jacksonian era. First, there was a boom and bust cycle, resulting in periodic depressions. Second, wealth became increasingly concentrated in the hands of a few, while the great majority of Americans lived in extreme poverty. Third, upper class used their wealth to control government, limit competition, and create a new despotism based on social class. To counteract these trends, modern liberals supported a vast increase in the power of the federal government, especially to control monopolies and to protect the rights of organized labor such as Union. Presently, the agendas of European social liberals and modern American liberals tend to be very similar, with both taking a distinctly left-of-center stance on social issues, whilst taking a more centrist stance on economic issues. Since the ideological center of the United States lies further to the right than that of Western Europe, policies considered centrist, or even right-wing, in Europe may be considered left-of-center in the U.S. Universal single-payer health care, for example, is considered a largely centrist policy in Europe but distinctly .
Democrats in general have tended more to the left and Republicans to the right.

All parties know still they all are in minority if they go to next election until they do some job or say something that people vote for one group more than others
Having more PHD in liberal made them analyze the data more. Joint NDP to conservative if they are not get what they wish for is made NDP looser and Liberal a winner as opposition party
Conservative in West plus NDP( Olivia Chow wife of jack Layton is look not believe god) is from Toronto vs. Liberal in Ontario and Qubeqa in Quebec
Now see who can help Toronto more so far Liberal are got more vote here, Maybe tone of conservative are talking is not sound humble and friendly to Toronto scared them Of white English attaching here, We need Obama to save us with black color, we thought a week ago Quebec was separated and NDP is socialist then the trick of new election is work for conservative both Harper and Jack Layton are not look god lover or too much to religion, Then Liberal must boos the religion more, Still 25% of Muslim and real religion are not support conservative unless conservative change their plan and politic of defamation of Muslim aside
