Started with a bad case of hopenchange fevah….It’s sad watching someone descend into the heart of darkness.
What! The Canadian people do not see Iggy as the next coming of Moses. The ignorant curs.
good explanation of why minority governments will stay with us: there is no fundamental difference between the Libranos and the Cons.
Governance requires leadership and occasionally – firm decisions.
Our Cons have triangulated for power, and that’s what they hold. If that means nationalizing car companies or bailing out pension plans selectively, then so be it. The same as the Libranos would have done.
I dunno bob c, About Moses as a role model, then again, Moses led the Jews around the desert for 40 years, then he settled them on the only land in the middle east with no oil? Now Mr Ignatieff does share the prevailing view among the elite that the seas will subside, the Earths fever cool, if only the likes of you and me pay way more “green taxes”. It must be workin’ already, I hear kookzooki and big fat Al are buying waterfront homes, maybe they get special dispensation from Gwaii.
It’s H-is fault. Iggy reveals his New NEP later this day at his Love-In at Sudsbury.
Aunty-Ammurican says: It’s an O’Shrinker in the States, the EU, the JapanInc.: “The U.S. economy shrank by 5.7 per cent in the second quarter.”
…-
“’80s recession worse
Still, the level of economic contraction nationally was approximately half of the 4.9 per cent GDP loss experienced by Canada in the recession of the early 1980s.
Even faced with that level of deterioration, Canada fared better than many other regions around the world.
The U.S. economy shrank by 5.7 per cent in the second quarter.
For the first three months of 2009, the European Union’s GDP fell by 10 per cent, while Japan’s national income shrivelled by a record 14.2 per cent.”

Aw, shucks, poor Liberals. If the economic news is not so, so bad, the sheeples are not all that afraid, less likely to rise to the EI bait.
Better think of something else to sell us, Iggy. Surely, there must be some horrific injustice left in this world that Canadians are uniquely positioned to fix, if only they had the correct leadership.
In the interim, may I humbly offer the Libranos, at no charge, the following platform plank: “we’ll steal less next time”.

It has nothing to do with the polls. Really. The Iggster is just really, truly, deeply committed to making this Parliament work. Really. At least until the poll numbers improve.
Here is my opinion: I don’t want an election this year and I won’t vote for the Liberals.
I hope they are writing this down.
Jay seems to have a real hard on for the the fact that Harper has not governened from the mid to far right with a minority government.
Not sure how one is supposed to do that here in Canada.
I’d like to see him get a bit more aggressive in his messaging – and he has at times.
The HRC sec. 13 issue is one that needs to be resolved too, but any attempt to do so would have been defeated by the looters in opposition and painted Harper and the Conservatives as extremists. End of issue – and of Conservative government.
As it stands, it has meant that though some very good and decent individuals have been dragged through the mud (and I don’t envy them one bit), Canadians as a result, are becoming more informed of the issue and the HRC continues to hang itself with the rope it is given.
A grassroots desire for the killing of Sec 13 that this will create, is far better than the government simply attempting to sweep it aside while the public remains largely ignorant.
The Libs and media would have a field day with the narrative on that,(they being the champions of maintaining Human Right – The Cons trying to take them away) and it would likely trigger an election that would see the Conservatives defeated.
I think I will vote Liberal – the candidate here says nice things, and I just KNOW they will not toe any party line, and bow down before count Iggy (and his brilliant advisors), and NOT steal any more money , and, and, and ………………
pathetic
“The difference being that the Grits genuinely believe the idiocy”
This is plain stupid. It reminds me of people who decided to vote for obozo because they didn’t think mccain was sufficiently conservative. How did that work out?
He’s going to vote for people who believe stupid things because they really, really believe the stupid things. And even that’s kind of dumb – what evidence is there they believe in anything?
What a fool.
Like many I am mortified by some of the decisions the Conservatives have been making. Partly I have excused them because I think they are locked in the bind of public perception. They have tried to do Conservative things only to get lambasted in the media by pretty much every columnist, even so called Conservative ones. Partly this may be due to a lack of ability to present public policy in simple and easily understood terms, but I do think there is an entrenched difficulty with presenting change. Really conservative is a misnomer as they are proposing a lot of changes while liberals tend to favor the current system.
For example we both know what would have happened if Harper had said what he really thinks about antropogenic global warming: ie: the science is not there. Every columnist out there and every TV personality would be running mockumentaries about 10,000 IPCC scientists and interviewing every AGW supporter-fake scientist out there until Harper looked like a member of the Flat Earth Society.
Therefore the best I can hope is that he lips the public message, and stalls at every opportunity preventing the demise of Canadian infrastructure. That appears to be what he is doing, which really is what the Liberals did as well for all those years.
I have also thought about supporting local candidates for who they are rather than what color they are (red, blue, orange). Unfortunately I have figured out after decades of Chretien, Mulroney, Trudeau, and now Harper that the MP means exactly what Trudeau called them. The best you can hope for is an MP who tries to limit stealing from the public purse for personal riding and gain – knowing that others are doing the most they can to enrich their ridings at the expence of others.
So for now I go on hoping that eventually the Conservatives will develop a better ability to present public policy. I think Harper is 100 times more intelligent than many have given him credit, and I will agree with him that things will move slowly and we cannot expect people to change years of socialist upbringing to suddenly move a little to the right.
Harper has not governened from the mid to far right with a minority government.
Not sure how one is supposed to do that here in Canada.
By voting Liberal, silly, just like Jay will now.
ward – bingo. Cheers
That the Iggy steam roller that was supposed to “flatten” Harper has run out of steam should surprise no one, no one except his lackeys in the MSM.
Step one for any leader of a major political party is to get a legitimate mandate from his own party. In Iggy’s case, that never happened. He was essentially parachuted into the position by the party bosses. It’s going to be tough for the Liberals to motivate their base when that base never had a chance to actually vote on who the leader should be.
The problem is that if you don’t get a mandate to govern your own party, the voting public is much less likely to hand you a mandate to govern the country.
I’m beginning to think that the whole effort to create a leftist coalition last fall was just a coup d’etat within the Liberal Party. The objective was to get rid of Dion by handing him a task that the party bosses and Power Corporation knew he would fail at. Then they could install a leader who was more to their liking.
I tend to agree with those who are willing to cut PMSH and the CPC some slack. That doesn’t mean they don’t hear from me when warranted, nor does it mean I’m unsympathetic to the frustration the Jay Curries must be feeling at times, but there’s only so much they can realistically accomplish at this point in time.
As others have noted, any serious attempt to govern well to the right on certain issues simply won’t fly. They might go down ‘honourably’, but they’ll still almost certainly go down. Imagine for a moment President Obama somehow winning in 2012 while we’re stuck with a minority Liberal government propped up by the NDP and/or the Bloc. For now I’ll take the least worst option.
As the Americans are finding out, be careful what you wish for.
The reason Ward and others are not sure how the Conservatives are supposed to lead, is because they have never seen leadership. I can tell you, in my experience, excuses are always much easier than leadership. Excuses in fact, are pretty much the easiest thing in most any circumstance.
…not sure how the Conservatives are supposed to lead, is because they have never seen leadership.
What currently living Canadian has?
Kevin,
I think the fundamental problem is that conservative leadership is an oxymoron. Conservativism is not one of the 6 attributes of effective leadership. In fact it works counter to what a leader should be. You need go no further than the posts at this blog to observe the ‘nut’ of conservatism.
I see the 6 attributes of conservatism as being: 1) cheap 2) paranoid 3) a complainer 4) inflexible 5) egotistical 6) parentally programmed.
Just read ubber conservative maz2’s post to discover that his rhetorical maZturbations offer no solutions and not the slightest inkling of leadership…just wanking, complaining and bitterness!
I took a telephone survey Call (last week) RE: Obama & Economy….IN CANADA…. I suspect it was Liberal… They really wanted my Email Addy..(contest) Nope. Don’t think my answers fitted any category
Jay Currie seems most of the time to be a decent guy, so I’ll spare y’all the enraged rant this time and say just two little words:
Party
Discipline.
And by Party Discipline I mean that it doesn’t matter a tinker’s damn who your MP is 99% of the time, because all votes are whipped votes. It only matters what party he’s in.
You want action out of the CPC Jay, then get in their face. Sorry if that’s a bore, eh?
Fixed that for you.
…conservative leadership is an oxymoron…
It’s probably defensible to state that, until recently, Liberal leadership has been relatively strong; unfortunately it’s also been relatively corrupt.
Syf:
nice little ad hominem attack on conservatives…
Meanwhile the reality is that conservatives donate a greater percentage of their income than liberals do,
they do not play identity politics (by and large)
do not fall into the messiah complex – no obama’s kennedys or trudeaus on the right side of the spectrum.
Are not paranoid like Chomsky and klein.
And many were not conservative in their youth but broke free from their parental and MSM upbringing to become conservative.
It has been my experience that the attributes a name-caller gives to his enemy very often best describe the name-caller himself. Take a long hard look in the mirror SYF, perhaps you will be able to admit that it is you who has the attributes that you say conservatives have.
Wonder if Jay wants to attend the $550.00 plate fund raising dinner in Sudbury tonight to help his new friends?
Way to impress a union town that is in the pits right now?
Just to emphasise the ‘eliteness’ of the Libs, the Dippers are having a $5.50 spaghetti dinner to help the un-employed miners.
The donation to the food bank (at the Lib rally) sounds like an afterthought.

Sorry I meant NSE not SYF

It beats the Modern Liberal Creed of greed, envy, penis envy, no ethics, no morals, no values, forms coalitions with our enemies, women bashers, no commonsense,no moxie, marxists loons.
See, Jay makes a good argument but his conclusion doesn’t follow it at all. “The Conservative party isn’t governing far enough to the right, so I’m going to vote for a party that will govern even farther from the right!”
Seems pretty self-defeating to me. Like someone said to Jay in the comments, if you want more conservative governance, get in your MP’s face and lobby for the change you want to see. The role of citizen in politics does not end when you mark your X.
My response to jay et al (including Andrew coyne):
How long would the CPC be in power if they were as hardline as you want them to be?
With apologies to LBJ – piss out of the tent not into it.
GigglesMSM mocks/ridicules Lib Iggy.
Mockery? Ridicule? SquishyIggy is finished.
The MSM is laughing/sneering at Lib Iggy.
Go home Iggy.

Brilliant, Jay. Vote left in order to get a further right government.
I’m sure there’s no inherent flaws in your plan.
Want change? Get involved with the Conservative Party and do something about the problems. Don’t bitch that they are too far left (with a minority government) and threaten to vote the next left thing.
I think people are dumb, but I’d still rather elect a person than my cat, who’ll just sit around licking his gonads and weaseling treats from my missus. Which, if I’m not mistaken, is a very apt description of the Liberal electoral philosophy.
Thanks for the delightful cat imagery Yukon Gold…
but you may be insulting Buster the cat because at least he catches a raiding rat and numerous pilfering mice.

the professional apologists are out in force today, creating excuse after excuse.
If you lack a spine, then any inaction and Liberal policy move can be explained away.
Calling Harper out on the flip flops and Liberal method of governing is part of the dialogue that conservatism demands. Considering exactly how far off the path of conservatism/ideology this ‘party’ had stood for, it’s to Harper’s credit alone the noise hasn’t been louder.
That will change. The Red Tory/Liberal hijack of the Conservative Party hasn’t improved electoral fortunes in four years, and has reduced popular votes to the smallest in history.
And we’ve ended up with a Liberal Party of Canada governance model: buy votes where you can, and forget your promises.
The lightweights in here shouting down dissent or alternatives are revealing. Just like a good bunch of thugs at a union rally ensuring agreement…dissent cannot be tolerated.
I might canvass for the Dawg if he was running nearby.
That’s some excellent thinking; a gobsmackingly-stupid doctrinaire Marxist dillhole would be a good representative of my conservative views, because, um, because …
“dissent cannot be tolerated.

Thanks, softboiled. This explains almost perfectly why your commie RedStar shut down comments on Iggy and possible election so fast….too much dissent against the non-emperor.
Hardboiled: and your policies that stephen Harper and the cpc would ride to a majority on would be…?
Kinsella lured Jay over. That’s just the facts. He did it openly on his blog for all to see. ( I am loathe to link to it, but it is there).
Jay’s words are merely a pathetic excuse for lusting after the “Comfy Fur” that Kinsella dangled at the end of a stick.
That “Fur” is access to taxpayer’s $ for personal pleasure!

The one defining attribute of losers, is that they keep doing the same thing that got them into trouble in the first place.
Commence with matching the behaviours of persons, pundits and politicians with this information in mind.
As much as I deplore the lack of conservatism in government by the CPC, I will continue to vote for them as the party that is the least of evils.
Voting Liberal to teach the Cons a lesson, sounds foolproof to me.The states did it,now look at the mess they’re in.

So speakth the snivelers and the whiners.
And what have these sniveling whiners done to help get us closer to achieving what he says he wants? Very little it would seem.
Goof balls like this remind me of “get rich quick” suckers. They don’t have the work ethic to slowly but surely work toward their goal. No, No, No, they want what they want, and they want it now.
Maybe these numbskulls should ask themselves why Canadians should vote “Conservative” when such a bunch of crybabying quitters are part of the package.
Do me a favor and bugger off then, would ya.
This is slightly off topic but I actually voted Lieberal in the last Provincial election.Terrible Iknow but the guys name was RATSO and I thought cool little guy grey pin stripe suit pointy nose little tail. Why not if the name fits besides it was the rodent or the ndp or greens BC sucks we need conservative provincial party.
Who the F… is Jay Currie?
As an original REFORMER in Ontario I share some of the frustrations of Jay Currie, but recall how the Reform /PC vote splitting for too many years resulted in the corrupt malfeasant Chretien Liberals governing.
Water in the wine, so to speak.
Unlike Jay Currie I could never bring myself to ally with that corrupt regime, the rot at the core remains, and the the stench still lingers.
The HRC’s need neutering for sure but as someone suggested it is folly for the conservatives to make that an issue, the media in this country is still Harper’s worst nightmare come election time.
However, the satisfying part, on the world stage, G-8, G-20 or what have you….. Harper is the smartest guy in that room!!
And, oh yeah, we don’t have to beg Putin’s Ruskies to transport our troops or water purification systems during disasters in foreign countries.
Is it asking too much of the Libs for them to find ONE election narrative, and stick to it for a while, like I dunno, three months at least ? My head is spinning, trying to keep track of all the different messages coming out of the characters in Lib Central.
