Now is the time at SDA when we juxtapose!
FCPP – It is insane to ignore the voices of the people at the bottom who witness a lack of accountability and transparency in Indian Country. One candidate for national chief, on his campaign website, said that, “First Nations leadership has been challenged by unfounded assertions of lack of accountability and integrity.”
CBC – British Columbia businessman Shawn Atleo became the national chief of the Assembly of First Nations on Thursday morning when his sole remaining contender conceded defeat after the eighth ballot.

accountability and transparency . . . .
conditions that are needed for better governance. Too bad these conditions are so rare in Aboriginal politics.
At this time in history, the key words would be corruption and favoritism.
Juxtapose !! Where the comparisons are all powerful and obvious.
(N/A for those that are so blind they will no see)
Not excited about what this guy will bring. I don’t see any improvements in his blurb.
I have said this before, elsewhere on the blogosphere, but I will repeat it here again today –
First Nations seemingly function as separate independent entities (on about 8 billion federal tax dollars per year).
Why do not some of the progressive bands concentrate their efforts towards building and operating for profit Health Clinics for MRI’s Cat scans etc to bypass the Canadian health care monster?
Thus eliminating rationed wait times for ailing Canadians.
Rather than deal in illegal cigarette manufacturing, operating much needed health care services would be a welcome service for Canadians bringing not only wealth to First Nations but enhancing their own place in the Country of Canada, getting off the dole.
What say you new Chief Shawn Atleo?
Obamaism strikes again!
I have something interesting from Caledonia to add:

This is a letter from Six Nations Councilor Helen Miller to the Brantford Expositor on July 14th 2009. Her letter does much to restore my faith in the basic decency of Canadians, whatever hyphenation PC multi-culti stupidity would like to put before their names. Native-Canadian, French-Canadian, p1ssed-off Scots-Canadian (that’d be me), these false distinctions are just that: false.
The general run of people on the Six Nations reserve are getting quite fed up with the antics of various criminal and/or political groups who have claimed to “represent” the Indians. As Ms. Miller says:
“We’ve all noticed of late the absence of protests on development sites. I believe the protests have stopped for two reasons: The people [protesters] don’t want to be arrested and they know they don’t have the support of the Six Nations community anymore.”
The most important thing to keep in mind with Caledonia is who people around here are angry at. They are not angry at the Indians generally. They are not angry particularly at the Six Nations elected council. They haven’t done anything.
The are however -very- angry at the OPP and the McGuinty government for allowing ORGANIZED CRIME to take over and keep an entire housing development, and for continuing to allow illegal smoke shops, thuggish behavior and general lawlessness to prevail in Caledonia. Its obscene, its disgusting, and it may very well be the result of deep reaching corruption in the Ontario government.
The national situation with reservation governance is just Caledonia writ large. Time for a clean up, eh?
Just out luck, the one thing the guy picks up from white-man-culture is global warming!!!
Oh yeah, and twitter.
Native Canadians share a knack with Palestinians for unerringly choosing leaders who exploit them, lie to them, and perpetuate their problems.
Here’s hoping the new guy will snap the streak.
Like us its up to Natives to kick the crooks out.
If the Muslims take over the natives can look forward to conversion or beheading as Pagans. As for treaties it was not made by Islam, so tough luck to them. They can kiss any land or money from anyone away. In fact they will have to pay Jizra to be allowed to live & their Women not to be raped.
Its time the Government left them alone & let natural process determine Native future if there is one. This system will not be able to take any disasters without collapse, or eventual revolt from those under it.
When you allow evil greedy men to do what they want without any protection, its morphs into a criminal enterprise.
No wonder they cry at any thought of looking into REZ pratices.
JMO
I’m not expecting anything to change. Why call for accountibility or integration when irresponsibility and race-baiting have worked so well in the past?
Ron said, “Juxtapose !! Where the comparisons are all powerful and obvious. ”
I disagree. This one was so complex and nuanced I actually had to read the article to understand the point.
Joe, I see potential but it’s harder to run an effective, profitable hospital than casino.
Three of the five front runners asserted that all their problems are a direct result of being under funded and having too many demands for accountability along with conditions placed on funding.
No one was recorded as offering the will to take greater responsibility or that such an option even exists.
These are the top of the heap?
The best of the bunch?
This new Abo leader is just another Obamba and Sotomayor style racist.
In his comment about the indigenous people’s movement, one would get the impression that white people cam from another planet and have no homeland of their own.
We suffering white folks need to start a movement to fight for a sustainable homeland for our people.
If we’re lucky, they will give us Greenland, after all, much new real estate is about to open up there, as the astounding warmth of the eastern Canadian summer wafts in that direction.
Or so I am informed.
I’m so confused. There were only 2 candidates left in the last 4 or 5 rounds of voting. Each vote keeps bringing back the same result of essentially a 50-50 vote split. They keep going to another ballot in hopes that something will change?!?!?!? This line of thinking leads me to believe that nothing will change with First Nations governance either despite a new leader.
There is always another side of the coin, and you turds couldn’t see it if it hit you in the face, every one that posts here is so smart answer me these questions dealing with the “Indian Problem”.
1) If the Canada bought Ruperts land for 250,000 pounds from the HBC, who did the HBC Buy it from?
2) Is being aboriginal, a away of life or is it a raced based system?
3)By whom, when and where does law start on turtle island?
4) Did any aboriginal group agree to the Indian Act?
5) Why is it we have to learn french as a second language not Cree, Dene, and on (area specific)
6) Why are there only two groups who founded canada not 5 like history clearly states.
7) Why is it that we like to look dowm on first nations leadership, Is it that the colonial government of Canada has never been corupt?(vote for Grant Devine)
8) Residental school system (i’ll leave this alone)
I could go on but i wont, we are all hypocrites, that doesn’t matter it is striving for human, gender and mother nature rights as well as equality and consensus that is the Canadian way
