Blog Notes

Readers may note that the preponderance of items posted here in recent days are decidedly non-Canadian in content.
This is due in no small part to the fact that the number one story in Canadian politics at the moment is a controversy involving the Prime Minister and a cracker.
I mention this, not to invite further debate, but to offer that if you are a Canadian news journalist or pundit who has not yet been launched from a bridge railing in celebration of your complete and utter uselessness, there may still be time.

  1. So far, none of the fine Christians upset at my use of the word “cracker” have expressed any regret at all over my call to throw journalists from bridges.

  2. What bothers me about this incident is not merely the triviality of a national media focusing on it, but the malice, the mean-spirit, behind this agenda.
Our Canadian MSM is so biased, so partisan, so unprofessional that it doesn’t deserve the name of ‘journalism’. It is, instead, a singular process of propaganda that is devoted to getting Harper out of office – and the Liberals reinstated to their ‘natural place’.
These news services are relentless; they constantly criticize Harper – but, since his work in the substantial areas of Canada is excellent, they don’t report this and instead, spend days and endless front pages on trivia. On ‘the wafer’; on his being 100 seconds ‘late’ for the photo-op; on his hair, or his not hugging his son (who would have been mortified if he had done so); or his clothes, or hair, or..whatever.
Do we hear about what he does for the economy? No, instead we hear about the ‘recession’, with the media expecting Harper, alone, to repair a global recession. The many economic agendas, the wise treatment of banks, etc – no. Not a word. When grants are handed out, silence. Or, the provincial premiers take the credit.
For example, in Toronto, the TTC is displaying large signs thanking McGuinty for new money. The money comes, shared, from the federal govt. Not a word. But, a TTC sign, effectively acting as an election sign, for McGuinty.
Nothing is ever heard about the infrastructural work of Harper’s government – the water, roads, transportation funding. The reduction of taxes to enable small businesses to prosper. The funding of immigration settlement programs. On and on, but not a word is ever written about such things.
When Chretien was funding projects of his special friends – the media never said a word; when the Liberals were funding their election campaigns with taxpayer money – the media never said a word until it was broken by whistle blowers.
And the Canadian media – what do they endlessly discuss on their talk shows? When, when, when’s the election. That discussion is endless – will it be next week, next month, in the summer, in the fall. They refuse to accept that we have a government; that they have a duty to inform the public of its activities – and instead, the Canadian media reject our government and work, diligently, on trying to get Their Guys, the Liberals, back in power.

  3. Being Catholic myself, I know that to us the Eucharist is sacred. That being said, we all know that PMSH is not Catholic, so did that priest that served him Communion. Instead of the MSM attacking our Prime Minister they should be attacking the priest. No one knows the protocol of others’ religion, unless you have been schooled in it. Things have changed so drastically in the RC religion over the past 30 yrs., that I am not even sure giving him communion was wrong. From what I’ve seen of other Catholic PMs, I don’t even think they know what they believe anymore.
This is just some brouhaha that the media has manufactured to make our PM look foolish. I wouldn’t buy a newspaper if they paid me. There are not many journalist left amongst them. Gotcha politics all the way every day.

  4. ET; that is all because THERE IS NO MONEY BEING GIVEN OUT IN PAPER BAGS NOW, you and I both know that when lieberals are in power the money is sloshed around like coffee at a Stampede breakfast. The pathetic angry faces in the media, the Don Martins Jim Travers etc have nothing else to go after Harper on so they manufacture garbage. The msm are such self loathing losers they endorse failure/Cretien/ but try endlessly to crucify successful administrations/Harpers/, says more about their utter uselessness than anything else. May they all follow their mascot the Dodo bird to extinction quick as possible.

  5. “Canada is nowhere to be seen on more than just another missed photo-op,” said Liberal Foreign Affairs Critic Bob Rae. “On the global issues that matter – climate change, Africa and the global economy – Stephen Harper is going in the wrong direction.”
At least Stephen Harper didn’t miss the photo-op because he was skiing in the U.S. instead of going to the King of Jordan’s funereal.
And Kate’s calling the eucharist a “cracker” is small potatoes compared to suggesting that people should be handing out chocolate crucifixes at Easter instead of bunnies.

  6. Well said ET. Thanks.
Since I am a lapsed Catholic I have no objection to bridge tossing lickspittle journalists.
My problem is which one to toss first.
Giggles? Carol? Bob? Jim? Don Newman / Martin? Tom Clark? Craig? Susan Delacourt? Greg? Either Van Deusen? Rockburn?
In fairness though, I would provide them with a life-presever jacket, all with Conrad Black’s autograph on each.

  7. I try not to clutter my mind, what little I have left of it, on stories like this. However reading the comments brought 2 things to mind.
The Catholic church touts its self as the true christian religion and believe in 1 true god and are against idols. When you go into a Catholic church how many statues/idols are there, and how many saints do they have?
Now I’m led to believe that one of their biggest ritules is an act of cannibalism.
Boy I guess the rest of us protestants or below are lucky to have dodged that bullet

  8. re the cracker:
    LUKE
    Chapter 22
19 And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in REMEMBRANCE of me.
20 Likewise also the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you.
Christ was literally still there with his disciples when he said it.
    It was a METAPHOR.
    Duh, Catholics.

  9. Did someone call the Canadian PM a Cracker?
Where’s the ACLU when you need it now? Or would that only apply to Iggy?

  10. Has anyone thought that perhaps the PM was hungry?
Or if he did stick it in his pocket perhaps he was saving it as a snack for the plane trip over to the G8 summit.

  11. “So far, none of the fine Christians upset at my use of the word “cracker” have expressed any regret at all over my call to throw journalists from bridges.”
    LMAO. That’s 2 days in a row. Tip’d.

  12. Has anyone actually read most of this coverage and what is actually being written? Or is it just the fact that it is being written at all the outrage? Because, while widely covered, the articles are all pretty much just reporting the facts of the circumstances. Moreover, almost all columnists have decreed this a non-event: check out National Newswatch or any of the other news aggregators.
In fact, none of “The Media” go even as far in criticising Harper as does LifeSiteNews.com, hardly a “liberal” news organization.
But if it gives you the opportunity to bash Liberals and “The Media” and to further the mythmaking about an anti-conservative “Media”, what the heck, eh?
(And to say Harper did not know exactly what he was doing is giving him a much too free pass on this scandalette. He’s been to Catholic and Orthodox masses often enough, as his own PMO made clear. The obvious and intelligent thing to do would have been a quick and simple “oops, my bad, not my religion, won’t happen again”. But then that would entail conceded that Harper is not perfect, so it won’t happen.)

Canadian Non-Catholic PM Says he Did Consume Communion after Offered, Will Meet Pope Saturday
By John-Henry Westen and Patrick Craine
OTTAWA, July 7, 2009 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Prime Minister Stephen Harper is in hot water over a video that caught him taking Holy Communion in a Catholic Church, despite being a non-Catholic Christian. To make matters worse, the video shows him walking away without consuming the host – although a spokesman for the Prime Minister told LifeSiteNews.com that the PM did consume the host off-camera.
The incident took place last Friday at the funeral of former Governor General Romeo Leblanc in Memramcook, New Brunswick.
In the video Harper is show being offered communion by the Archbishop of Moncton, André Richard. The Archbishop commented, regarding what Harper did with the host, that “I didn’t see anything wrong there because I was busy doing something else,” according to the Telegraph-Journal.
According to Catholic teaching the communion wafer becomes the body and blood of Jesus Christ after it is consecrated by the priest. The Church teaches that only practicing Catholics who are properly disposed to receive Holy Communion should present themselves to receive the sacrament.
Catholic officials are blaming Prime Minister Harper for the incident. Monsignor Brian Henneberry, Vicar General and Chancellor for the Diocese of St. John called for an explanation from the Prime Minister’s office. “If the prime minister is not a Catholic, he should not have been receiving communion,” he said, “and if he comes up it places the priest in an awkward position, especially at a national funeral because everyone is watching.”
He says that if Harper took the host without consuming it, “it’s worse than a faux pas, it’s a scandal from the Catholic point of view.”
“If I were the prime minister,” he said, “I would at least offer an explanation to say no offence was meant, and then (clarifying) what happened to the consecrated host is in order. I would hope the Prime Minister’s Office would have enough respect for the Catholic Church and for faith in general to make clear whatever happened.”

  13. So far, none of the fine Christians upset at my use of the word “cracker” have expressed any regret at all over my call to throw journalists from bridges.

That’s because that was insulting the proper target, Kate. (And I see this section is now attracting the minority, ‘Whore of Babylon’, wacko-Protestants–contrasted with most Protestants–as well as the Evangelical Atheists. Hey, just like an Allahpundit thread at HotAir that should see a religious addendum made to Blair’s Law*.) See you, I’m gone for the whole weekend.
    *Blair’s law
Coined by Australian journalist, Tim Blair as –
“the ongoing process by which the world’s multiple idiocies are becoming one giant, useless force.”
    1. The alliance between the radical Left and extremist Islamists is an example of Blair’s Law.
    2. The fact that white supremicists like David Duke supported ‘Mother’ Sheehan’s sit-in at Crawford, TX is an example of Blair’s law.

  14. So far, none of the fine Christians upset at my use of the word “cracker” have expressed any regret at all over my call to throw journalists from bridges.
    Funny how that works…

  16. When the PM meets the Pope this Saturday, perhaps he should offer to have his stomach pumped.

  17. I”m surprised at you, Sean. Such old, 4th grade “jokes” are really beneath your intelligence. LIke Catholics haven’t heard that one a million times. Try harder.

  18. So far, none of the fine Christians upset at my use of the word “cracker” have expressed any regret at all over my call to throw journalists from bridges.
If anyone thought you were seriously urging that, you’d be getting a visit from the RCMP.
    I think it’s a jest.

  19. From the TangoJuliette Desk.
tj’s latest issue of the “For What It’s Worth” Epistle to the possibly Sacredotally-deranged pawns and tools of the thieving libranoid war-room cabal.
tj is prepared to consider granting more weight, gravitas and substance to recent contentions, allegations and concerns raised by one maritime RC Bishop, Brian Henneberry, regarding questions surrounding the issue of the Host, in the hands or pocket or mouth of PM Harper.
Is there a long trail of documented history of the good bishop voicing similar strenuous concerns about RC clerics and laymen abusing little boys and girls, abusing and demeaning First Nations Peoples, throughout Canada’s residential School Network and or the Church’s orphanages and ‘insane asylums’ of Quebec lost generations? Does there exist a similar record of this same Bishop advocating for his church to loosen her purse-strings in an attempt to help alleviate the sad plight of the hungry, the needy the down-trodden of the world? Has the bishop a track record of lobbying to clean up the Quebec French vocabulary of cursing and swearing wherein every word of foul and vile intent is rooted in the sacramental icons and elements of Roman Catholicism.
If no such serious paper-trails exist, then it is worth serious consideration to see this ‘man of the cloth’ to be not much more than a man of the cabal; to see this titled bishop to be no more than a willing, actual real-time pawn, in the hands of his political masters he serves with greater allegiance and obeisance than he submits to the God he professes to serve.
Supposedly created God’s image, yet referring to himself as a piece of “Shit from Hell,” the liberals’ war-room Cardinal Richelieu-wannabe seems to be not much more than a straight man for some latter day Savonarola-pretender, all uniformly stepping out to the cadences of CBC’s not quite excommunicated princess of punditry and lib-stooge, secretive, gently-chastised, author of anti government screeds.
Of course, in typical fashion, exemplary of so-called “progressive’ insight, very few if any of this lot know the differences between the nuanced variations within Christendom’s “fundamentalists,” “evangelicals” and “protestants.” At best, all that is being generated at this point is what appears to be not much more than a LPOC exercise in the Politics of Division – Sectarian Branch.
Indeed. Why not let’s bring back those glorious days of the emerald isle’s era of strife, murder and mayhem. Hell “The Glorious Twelfth” happens to be just around the corner – still ample time to scrawl some vicious graffiti, terrorize a religious denomination or two, crack a noggin or three.
This then, is warrin’ dimfella’s Liberal-Canada-to-come, as foul a bit of “work in progress” As one might want to imagine. Welcome to this air-conditioned nightmare in the making.

Re: Sarah Pailin?? If Sarah is the “absolute ditz” the proggies contend her to be, why this constant and persistent attack on the woman? To my way of thinking, this is just another manifestation of the Proggy, Lib OR Dem [P.L.O.D.] ELITIST & ENTITLEMENT Derangement Effect. They are deathly afraid that, once properly positioned, Sarah would resonate so effectively with a large slice of the U.S. electorate who’d vote in a way that most leftoids would consider to be a “tremendous mistake.” They would have to invoke their leftie doctrine of “the tyranny of the majority” for we all know that, when all is said and done, and after all the ballots are counted, “…anything other than a Liberal/Democrat victory would be a tragic mistake.”
The Liberal/Democrats are such elitists that they cannot believe, nor can they accept the fundamentals of democracy, wherein “ the great unwashed masses” have the mental acumen to rightly judge and effectively vote as they see fit. They do not trust the voters; they do not trust the will of the people. They don’t really want to admit it – but they don’t believe that everyone should be allowed to cast a ballot, without passing some sort of test.
    For what it’s worth!

  20. Kate,
Calling the Communion Host a “cracker” is like calling your dogs “mutts” – insulting and disingenious.
Those of us who are Catholics are the only religious group that people feel free to insult and mock without regret.
I look forward to your next blanket insult of the Jewish faith or Evangelical Christian groups.
By the way – Harper should fire his handlers for putting him in such a situation rather than ministers for handing out money to the “wrong” groups.

  21. This is a typical summer for the PM. Iggy can’t get any coverage because he isn’t the PM. The “unbiased” media is doing its part to drag our PM down. One day a wafer, the next late for a photo. Oh, this is really big news. I read comments from a few of these so called news stories and the people are not falling for this media hit on PM Harper. Most are saying: Is this really news?

  22. “So far, none of the fine Christians upset at my use of the word “cracker” have expressed any regret at all over my call to throw journalists from bridges.”
    And so?
You say that like it’s a bad thing…
BTW I don’t care what you call it….the transubstantiation dogma is a load of hooey IMO. The Christ I believe in is NOT a cracker, nor does he turn himself into one at various intervals.

  23. 500 stories about a communion wafer? That’s f-ed.
Good thing I don’t READ the Canadian press. I let Kate do it for me.
My condolences Kate, for you having to wade through the doodoo pile. What a waste of effort eh?
BTW, any of y’all giving any credence or weight to this idiot thing, cut it out. Don’t give in to the hype.

  24. My favourite part of The National’s coverage of this national scandal was the grainy, slow-motion close-up footage of the offending hand — sort of a “where did the bastard hide the body? This exclusive footage provides the best available view, but is inconclusive…
Btw, Kate, I too am offended by your incorrect use of the word “Cracker”. Jesus was, in fact, a Jew.

  25. As a practising heathen I don’t think the issue here is PMSH’s knowledge of religious protocol. It is the fact that he attended the funeral to pay his respects.

  26. No one is upset Kate, that you mentioned hurling journalists from the bridge.
Would that be with or without a parachute?
If it is the former, I’m sure the said journalists would quickly develop a short but meaningful prayer life. 🙂
    Cheers

  27. Re: Edward Teach
“You say that like it’s a bad thing…”
But… She didn’t say it like it was a bad thing, it was a simple factual observation.

  28. First PMSH was castigated for not taking the wafer. Now, as it becomes increasingly clear he did take it – they are starting to go after him for taking it.
It’s not something I’d get worked up into a lather about. Having a protocol expert? meh, if it wasn’t this it would be something else.
I take some small comfort tho in that the liboMSM morlocks get no traction from their endless machinations. They only make themselves increasingly irrelevant.
Get ready for the next pseudo scandal and the next and the next and the next….

  29. “… Btw, Kate, I too am offended by your incorrect use of the word “Cracker”. Jesus was, in fact, a Jew…”
    right on

  30. This thread is a painful reminder that,in both political camps, there are many people for whom rational thought dissapears once their particular pet doctrine becomes involved.
The secularists have pushed the pendulum far left; but only in reaction to those who would push it far right. The unfortunate outfall is that sensible, reasonable people, ie the majority, are often conflated with either of the extremes. This is why sensible, reasonable, ordinary people are often characterized as far-right or far-left. I’m beginning to think there will be no stabilizing solution since the zealots are always the noisiest.

  31. MSM slathered non-news stories regarding Harper hoping to deflect the public’s attention away from Iggy charging people forty dollars for a pancake. Notice not one single paper could muster up outrage that the unwashed masses had to pay Count Iggy and the Liberal Party forty bucks to meet the Leader of the Official Opposition. Now that’s a real scandal, poor broke cheap tasdards.

  32. First you get down on your knees,
    Fiddle with your rosaries,
Bow your head with great respect,
    And genuflect, genuflect, genuflect!
Do whatever steps you want, if
You have cleared them with the Pontiff.
    Everybody say his own
    Kyrie eleison,
    Doin’ the Vatican Rag.
Get in line in that processional,
    Step into that small confessional,
There, the guy who’s got religion’ll
Tell you if your sin’s original.
If it is, try playin’ it safer,
Drink the wine and chew the wafer,
    Two, four, six, eight,
    Time to transubstantiate!
So get down upon your knees,
    Fiddle with your rosaries,
Bow your head with great respect,
    And genuflect, genuflect, genuflect!
Make a cross on your abdomen,
When in Rome do like a Roman,
    Ave Maria,
Gee it’s good to see ya,
    Gettin’ ecstatic an’
    Sorta dramatic an’
    Doin’ the Vatican Rag!

  33. Tony W: the bible talks about the city build on seven hills who will deceive many with her riches and power.
I’m protestant and I’m offended by Catholics using the word Christain to describe themselves. There’s a profound difference.
the MSM can’t do anything to surprise me anymore, it’s the ol’ sleight of hand, distract us here, while they get you in the back while your attention was diverted.
I’m not trying to offend anyone by the way, just my take.

  34. I can’t get too upset about Kate using the word cracker, for the simple fact that those who are writing these articles don’t consider the host to be anything more than that.
It might be more offensive if this was being reported in the Western Catholic Reporter, and she were to refer to it as such.
On a positive note, nobody here is threatening Kate or rioting in the streets because she refuses to show “proper” deference to Catholics beliefs.

  35. Colby Cash asked if Harper were cloning an Army of Jesuses
is that not Jesi or even Jesii

  36. cal2 and Colby Cosh, if Stephen Harper wanted and Army of Jesusi he only has to go to Mexico and recruit them. There are plenty of men named Jesus there.
If he were to clone the wafer he would have pope-tater chips.

  37. What an utter disgrace/joke. Across the boarder the Giant”Oster” is blowing trillions of future taxpayer dollars out the port hole or down a rat hole….

We have a giant Faux-Con north of the border pissing billions of future taxpayer dollars out the port hole…

  38. “Not to put too fine a point on it”
Put a little birdhouse in your soul.
BTW: jlc is Catholic and doesn’t like “cracker”.

  39. OTOH: recent catholic PMs: Turdeau, Clark, Cretin, Mulroo, Martin (about 39 of last 40 years?) – had remarkably cavalier attitudes to catholic doctrine.
The idea that you can disassociate your beliefs from your behavior was invented in Canada.
Should we be proud or what??
Harper has more moral integrity that that lot combined.

  40. “So far, none of the fine Christians upset at my use of the word “cracker” have expressed any regret at all over my call to throw journalists from bridges.”
I’m not a Christian but I object to throwing journalists off bridges. It will just screw up traffic and the bridge might not be high enough once the pile gets half the CBC fatcats under it.
Dropping the Michael Jackson/waffer journalists into the middle of Lake Superior should do it.

  41. hardboiled: You and your “ilk” probably think Harper’s not spending enough, right? Or has his spending spree been just right for you?
I’m thinking you should be very pleased that our PM is going along with the climate change and stimulus stuff. I mean, it’s what all the lefties want, isn’t it? You’re a “believer”, right?
All of your posts try to insult us conservatives. Small “c”, that is. That’s fine. But you’re forgetting something.
I haven’t heard you praise PM Harper for doing exactly what all of you lefties want. Come on, you can do it! You must be pleased! Let’s hear it!

  42. In fact, hardboiled, you should be so pleased about all of this stuff, that Harper should be the guy you vote for in the next election, right? Come on, you love him, admit it!!! Admittedly you hate us, but you must, by now, love Harper! Come on, you can say it!

  43. *
kate… it’s not like the rest of the news coverage is all that scintillating.
    we’ve had a week of “michael jackson… still dead”… and i bet
lloyd rubberhead wets his pants tonight over this fatal livestock
    incident.

  44. The irony of this whole thing is incredible. One of the principal organizations that have been the centre of anti Roman Catholicism from its inception (Radio Canada) has become a crusading defender of the faith. This is so rich. You can’t make this stuff up. All the anti-faith bigots at Radio Canada have become standard bearers of the faith. Who knew that it would be that simple to convert the heathen? Prime Minister you have done it again!

  45. Day 3 of Harper Bash by the media
ctv is reporting that the pm’s aid is apologizing for giving misinformation to the PM about a statement that was supposably made by Ignatieff & the PM making a rebuttal comment at the G8 about Ignatieff.
Iam not even going to post the Headline, Iam so Sick of the crap from the Socialist Media in this country when our PM is out of the country.
