  1. Oh Great…..They lost the fight there, so now they are going to pull their crap here in Canada.
    Liberals embraced them!!
    Conservatives banned them as terrorists!!!
Toronto’s NDP mayor ordered his police chief to allow them to fly their terrorist banners and shut down streets and a highway.
    The Mohawks must be jealous!

  2. This is a perfect opportunity for the liberals to distance themselves from terrorist supporters. They can now(with a clear conscience) claim to champion the plight of arsonists.

  3. Unless Iggy has had a memory lapse I’d say that he’s got a big problem with this Liberal voting bloc.

“I was in Colombo, in Sri Lanka, in the spring, and I was there to give a lecture in honour of a man whose memory I revere, Neelan Tiruchelvam…He was a moderate Tamil politician, and in 1996, coming home from an institute of academic research, he stopped at a stoplight, and a young woman drove up on a little scooter, detonated herself, and blew him out the other side of the car…… somehow, by the mysterious and slightly chilling grapevine of modern international life, when the word got out that I was going to give a lecture in Colombo in his honour, I began to get very extraordinary bits of Tamil literature, mailed to me with a Canadian postmark.… the sum and substance of these newsletters was basically to say that Neelan, got what he deserved. … And it shocked me deeply to discover that the people who wished and rejoiced in his death were fellow citizens of my country.”

  4. Cal,
Just like O’Bama, the past has no relevance. It’s only what is good for me (Ignatieff & O’Bama, which, by definition, is good for the country)at this point in time that matters.

  5. I was born and raised in Toronto. I lived there for the first forty seven years of my life. In 1996 I had had enough of the dirty streets, aggressive panhandlers literally every few feet, squeegee kids washing your windshields out of buckets they had just urinated in and expecting to get paid for it and the rising crime rate. (although BS statistics show it is not so bad and is falling)

When I read articles like the following (snippet and link provided) and read about one tribe of “New” Canadians setting fire to a place of worship of another tribe of “New”Canadians I don’t know whether to laugh or cry.

Here is what Toronto is not: Toronto is not dirty, dangerous, or poor. Toronto is not a hell of lost liberties or a babble of cultural incoherence or a ruin of failed institutions. Yet a popular argument against high levels of immigration suggests it should be.  LINK

  6. There’s little need to worry about the Tamil vote, it’s solid Liberal, won’t change, check out the Toronto ridings.
We really can’t know who in the so-called Tamil community is supporting the banned as terrorists Tigers, it’s a good bet they all are or are coerced to do so.
Our government has work to do to stop what could escalate into violence in our streets. Preventing people from going about their daily lives by blocking traffic is not a peaceful act.

  7. Largs, thanks for that link. What flavour of Kool-Aid was the guy who wrote THIS drinking?
    [begin quote]
Toronto, which has an Anglo-Protestant heritage as strong as any, has proved … dead wrong [the late Samuel Hungtington’s theory that “successful societies … owe their liberty and prosperity to distinct institutions which, in turn, depend on the persistence and dominance of the culture that established and nurtured them. Should that culture fade—or become too diluted by the customs, religions, and tongues of outsiders—the foundation of all that is best and most attractive about that society cannot long last.”]
In fact, Toronto shows that a community and its core institutions can not only survive a massive and growing immigrant population but thrive with one. Multicultural Toronto and cities like it prove that the institutions of liberal modernity are robust. Life within them is so good that people the world over flock to them. And newcomers do not take these institutions for granted. They have a stake in seeing them last. They can and do make them stronger …
    [end quote]
It’s obvious that this writer has never spent any time in Toronto and/or has been gobbling up all of the left-L/lib hearsay of bleeding heart multiculturalists who WANT Toronto to be a blueprint for a Kumbaya Utopia. He’s obviously not talked to the hard-working, tax paying Toronto public about this city’s deteriorating infrastructure, violence in our streets where police have increasingly become merely bystanders to lawlessness, and our ever-rising tax rates.
I’m not experiencing a Utopia here in Toronto. I’m not seeing “an Anglo-Protestant heritage as strong as any.” I’m not seeing “institutions of liberal modernity [that] are robust,” though I AM seeing “people the world over flock[ing] to {Toronto]” and too many “newcomers … taking these institutions for granted,” the Tamil Tigers (LTTE) being a perfect example of biting the hand that feeds them.
Now, the Liberals are looking like the duped thugs they are, having championed the cause of the terrorist Tamil Tigers. I hope they wear their duplicity like a millstone around their necks — and that Canadians have the eyes to see what complicit fools they are.

  8. Mark these words: “and a vast network in the 73 million strong Tamil diaspora.”
Tamil Tigers have “sleeper cells” in Toronto, Canada.
This is a warning to the Government of Canada and Canadians.

This is a perfect opportunity for the liberals to distance themselves from terrorist supporters. They can now(with a clear conscience) claim to champion the plight of arsonists.
The liberals also support Hezbollah, Al-qaeda; even Dion wanted to bring the TALIBAN into canada.
The liberal television media has yet to warn canada of the liberals’ association with terrorist groups even ndp and the bloc support them.
Why do you think that the LIBERALS NDP BLOC refuse point blank to RISE AND VOTE FOR THE ANTI-TERRORIST ACT BILL.
The very party which the Liberal media wants you to hate is the very party that ROSE AND VOTED FOR THE ANTI TERRORIST ACT BILL. that’s rights it is the CONSERVATIVES. They care for you not the libs, ndp or the bloc.
When OBAMA asked canada to take in some of the detainees, guess what, the libs ndp and bloc were in favour of it-not the prime minister stephen harper.

  10. Zilla, the Mohawks have nothing to be jealous of. These Tamil Tiger dorks can’t even burn down a frickin’ temple. The Mohawk Warrior and Smuggling Society burned down a whole bridge AND a hydro substation in Caledonia.
We should have Fantasy Football contests but with terrorists. Tigers vs. Warriors in a car burning contest, how many blocks of Rexdale can they lay waste in one night?

  11. Firebombing buddhist temples — great! Isn’t this how it began in Sri Lanka itself?

  12. Rachel Sa says: “You could have had us then. We were primed to hear more about your cause and, possibly, lend our support.””
    >>>> TO was ready to fold to the murderous Tamil Tigers?
“The unfortunate thing, Tamil protesters, is you had the opportunity to win the support of this city earlier this year. Your impressive, peaceful and non-disruptive protests filled the downtown core beginning in January. On the streets, everyone I spoke to was impressed with the crowds and with their determination to stand out in the cold for hours on end, forming a human chain.
You could have had us then. We were primed to hear more about your cause and, possibly, lend our support.”

  13. Not much of a fire bomb, Dr.D. More of a match rocket. Barely singed the paint work. Say what you want about the Mohawk smugglers, they know how to set a fire.

  14. Great . . . maybe now we’ll have the first suicide murderer here in Canuckistan . . . wonder who there target will be ?
    They already have Iggy’s address.

  15. The arson is probably still just an allegation. But if and when the LTTE operatives will be convicted, I take it that Canada will be free to expel the Tamil refugees? Sarcasm off.

  16. I wonder whats going to happen in Toronto in 50 or 100 years when there is going to be over a million Tamils living here.
Are they going to decide that they want a “homeland” of their own like in Sri Lanka?
Maybe they’ll start a civil war here in order to carve out an enclave for themselves.

  17. There is only one canadian solution to the firebombing. The governments must invest in fire proof temple doors and stop being critical.

  18. This is great news for Toronto.
Add this latest local street drama to the other metro TO socio-anthropologic tourist attractions:
The stigma of the next SARS plague incubating somewhere in the city’s plethoric accumulation of greasy grungy little corner restaurants and markets, or the cheery probability of catching a stray bullet from the city’s long-running drug gang turf wars, or the thrill of being fleeced by the internationally renown TO tax, fine and service kleptomania, or perhaps a colorful encounter with one of the city’s multitude of drug addict panhandlers will be educational for the kids. Now there are officially sanctioned pro Tamil Terrorist riots staged every week end for spectral colour.
What a wonder vibrant tapestry of social chaos awaits the intrepid traveller on his visit to “la grande fumée”.
Perhaps, if one is lucky and able to travel to the big smoke by car from the US, one may avail oneself of the spectacle of indigenous anarchy in the latest road or construction blockade by first nation warriors near Caledonia, Ipperwash or Deseronto. First rate impromptu anarchist mosaic street theater awaits you in the GTA and southern Ontario region. It’s hard to find this modern cultural nihilism outside third world failed states. A rare opportunity for the discerning anthropogenic taveller to witness civil and cultural break down first hand.
What a wonderful vacation and business destination. Top flight. Well done mayor Miller, Premier McGuinty et al. Somewhere the mayor of Mogadishu is envious you can make your cultural anarchy and violence pay tourist dividends. Even if it is from curious anthropologists studying the decay of your society.

  19. I wonder whats going to happen in Toronto in 50 or 100 years when there is going to be over a million Tamils living here. Are they going to decide that they want a “homeland” of their own…
Maybe the time has come for the “Torontonian Mandate”. The Jews get North York, the Tamils get…

  21. There was this interesting comment amongst the others in the article Largs’ linked to:

With all due respect, Richard Florida, what flavour of Kool-Aid were you drinking when you wrote this article? It’s pretty obvious that either you’ve been talking to the wrong people or that you’ve never walked the mean streets of Toronto or lived here for any length of time. Breezing in and out of the city and staying in hotels or in the better parts of town does not the measure of a city take.
I’m a Torontonian, living in the downtown core, and it’s not the multicultural Kumbaya Utopia you’ve described. I’m also not sure what “Anglo-Protestant heritage as strong as any” you’re talking about. This heritage is just about kaput, largely because in our multicultural stew here in Hogtown pretty much any culture OTHER than the Anglo-Protestant culture is protected by our Human Rights (sic) Commissions and other so-called “rights” legislation.
The goose that lays the golden egg is being slowly eviscerated and we’re approaching a time when the goose will be no more, so guess what happens to the golden egg?

  22. Cbc newsworld just aired a live piece on the Tamil demonstration in Toronto. No mention of this firebombing, but it was sympathetic to the protesters.Mohammed told us why they were demonstrating, all righteous and caring.

  23. So what happens if the Tiger leader calls for world-wide man-caused disasters as he goes down? Will these people in Toronto and other places start their own campaign of terror,or will they thank their lucky stars that they live in Canada where the rule of law applies?

  24. People who pine for multiculturalism must be very jealous of Toronto and its multi dollops of diversity. It truly is a world class city after all, right up there with Paris, Baghdad, Colombo, and London.I haven’t been there in 10 years, I’m sure it is now way too sophisticated for plain vanilla Canadians such as myself to visit today or anytime in the future.

  25. @oldwhiteguy
“what’s that about needing all these great immigrants?”
They come as refugees, not immigrants. Canada’s been carrying a guilt complex ever since McKenzie-King sent refugees back to Europe. Either you let them die or you provide them with a place for refuge. Human decency suggests the latter. Human greed results in your brand of Not In My Backyard – ism. Not that you’re wrong. Canada has been a little too lenient with these armchair/social activists. Wanna fight? Go back and fight. Wanna stay here? Leave your baggage at home.
    @voltairesbastard
yawn. Toronto-bashing is getting a little passe. It is, for better or worse, the biggest city in Canada, and the main commercial center. Come to think of it, all the big cities around the world meet your description. New York, London, Paris – they all get the same criticism. And yet they remain global focal points. Comes with the territory. Big cities attract the good. And the bad. Enjoy life in whichever backwater you re living in.
Heres what will happen with the Tamils. They’ll make some wierd noises now and then. And nothing more. Remember the Sikhs? They’ve been awfully quiet for a while now. I guess it doesn’t help that a Sikh has just got reelected as the Prime Minsiter of India.

  26. uh huh wrote: “Heres what will happen with the Tamils. They’ll make some wierd noises now and then. And nothing more”
Maybe there’s some kind of Master Plan™ afoot that ‘uh huh’ has prior knowledge of. Do you happen to know which other moving target, special interest group is scheduled to capture the Bleeding Hearts and Vacuous Minds™ of the MSM next via annoying/dangerous stunts? Thanks in advance if you can help.

  27. Tamils lost the war but id be more then glad to give them Toronto. That comes from somone who used to live there.
    Peter

  28. So whores in Parliament are allowed to solicit, and politicians wonder why so many have no respect for them any more.
I, like many others, are fed up with the likes of people transplanting their foreign grievances in Canada and am even more fed up with whores for politicians, who by their actions thumb their noses at the welfare of Canadians. Bombing a Buddhist Temple in Canada does nothing to advance their cause, nor does holding areas hostage by blocking all traffic.

  29. wallyj: ” … or will they thank their lucky stars that they live in Canada where the rule of law applies?”
wally, I WISH the rule of law DID apply here in Canada. If it did, we wouldn’t be in the mess we are today: There’s one law (if you can call it that) for the two-passport, sometime-citizen, multicultural, visible-minority “refugee”/immigrant to Canada and another law for the one-passport, full-time-pay-your-own-way-citizen of Canada — and you’ve got one guess as to which “law” is extremely lenient to non-existent.
I remember Canada when it actually was a law-abiding country, when pretty much every citizen paid their own way, took responsibility for themselves and their families, helped their neighbours, took care of their property — and, definitely, respected city property and public spaces.
That Canada’s no longer in existence because accountability has become passe, and irresponsible, unaccountable voting blocks, who feel entitled to their entitlements, can win a politician election to the HOC.

  30. “There’s one law (if you can call it that) for the two-passport, sometime-citizen, multicultural, visible-minority “refugee”/immigrant to Canada and another law for the one-passport, full-time-pay-your-own-way-citizen of Canada — and you’ve got one guess as to which “law” is extremely lenient to non-existent.”
    Leave Iggy alone, willya? Sheesh.

  31. As the World turns, we let those in our Nation that want to kill us. Our society Religion & law. All to make us salves to them. Immigration of third world fanatics is not a solution its madness.
    JMO

  32. Why isn’t bombing a Buddhist temple a hate crime? Why no mention of a hate crime yet?
If they didn’t know who did this it would be investigated as a hate crime. They know who did it though and the temple was targeted because of the nationality and religion of the people who used the temple. I thought that’s what constituted a hate crime.
I guess it’s true only white people can be charged with a hate crime.

  33. uh huh said: “…Remember the Sikhs? They’ve been awfully quiet for a while now. I guess it doesn’t help that a Sikh has just got reelected as the Prime Minsiter of India.”
Yeah, about that. You remember this chick Indira Ghandi? Used to be Prime Minister For Life of India? She got killed. By her Sikh body guards.
Then her whole rotten-to-the-core borderline Communist government kind of disintegrated, and the result for the Sikhs was that they stopped being beaten and murdered by government(read Hindu) forces in the Punjab. Oh, and India kind of exploded into massive economic growth too. Side benefit.
That’s why you don’t hear from the Sikhs any more. They won.
So, how come your multi-culti superior self didn’t know that, uh huh? That’s what I love about Torontonians, they claim to be more smarter and cosmopolitan than us dumb sticks dwellers, but they don’t know Jack.

  34. I pray to the Earth Mother that the veil of ignorance shall one day be lifted from your eyes.

  35. . Remember the Sikhs? They’ve been awfully quiet for a while now. I guess it doesn’t help that a Sikh has just got reelected as the Prime Minsiter of India.

I guess you missed the Ruby fiasco?????

  36. Maybe it’s just that I am a young white Torontonian from a working-class family, but I can’t see any of these paranoid fears as true. They sound like the sort of thing out-of-touch baby boomers spout. Having grown up around multiculturalism, I don’t understand any of these criticisms of multiculturalism. These criticisms smack of nostalgia and ignorance, to me. For example, the ‘Anglo-Protestant’ heritage of Toronto is plain for anyone to see. Multiculturalism isn’t as diverse as liberals like to think it is – multiculturalism involves a number of cultural communities living within an ‘Anglo-Protestant’ framework. After all, tolerance means we let people do or think whatever they want – as long as it doesn’t break the law. So, no polygamy or child brides or female circumcision, even if it is traditional! And the law is fundamentally ‘Anglo-Protestant,’ and Toronto’s largest minority group is still white folk.
The Tamil protesters have very good reason to care about their homeland – it’s not just politics, it’s the fact that their families are threatened by artillery bombardment etc. Would you tell a Sudanese Fur refugee that they shouldn’t care about genocide in Darfur? Would you tell Poles during the Cold War not to care about their families under communist repression?
The Tamil-Canadian community has as much reason and right to protest as anyone else, and the government should certainly condemn human rights abuses in Sri Lanka. I am frankly disappointed in the conservative attitude that, if one group can be connected to a second group which we dislike, then the first group should suffer for the sins of the latter. The Tamil Tigers use terrorist tactics, yes. The Tamil people should suffer for that connection? No.

  37. @thePhantom
When did the Air India bombing happen? And Indira Gandhi? Its been 22 years. The Khalistan movement has been dead for the better part of those 22 years. But congratulations on hitting the target, and missing the point.
“Then her whole rotten-to-the-core borderline Communist government kind of disintegrated, and the result for the Sikhs was that they stopped being beaten and murdered by government(read Hindu) forces in the Punjab. Oh, and India kind of exploded into massive economic growth too. Side benefit.”
Ooops. I spoke too soon. You’ve got foot in the mouth disease. Indira was a communist? Uh. Okay. Do you know who the architect of India’s economic reforms is? Manmohan Singh, the current Prime Minister. Do you know which party he belongs to? Congress Party, Indira Gandhi’s party. Do you know who recruited Manmohan Singh (a Sikh) into the Congress? Indira Gandhi.
“That’s why you don’t hear from the Sikhs any more. They won.”
They were fighting for an independent state named Khalistan. Care to show it to me on a map? You can’t, because it doesn’t exist. THere was no violence till the whole independent homeland drama started in the 1980s. And that was funded by Pakistan’s infamous ISI. Heard of it? Think Taliban. Once that little “movement” was put to rest, it ended, minus some jokers in Brampton and BC. Ironically enough, the man who brought the militants to their knees was a sikh himself. KPS Gill. Look him up.
I suggest you stick to topics you know slightly more than a name or two about. You’re not doing yourself any favors by making statements that reek of stupidity.
Hey guess what, my multicultural ass knew more than your – well, I havent a clue where you live. And I don’t care to find out either. Do us all a favor and stay right htere.

  38. Hey guess what, my multicultural ass knew more than your – well, I havent a clue where you live. And I don’t care to find out either.
Kate – IP logged? I, myself, have a “multicultural “ass”, I just don’t shove into everone else’s face. How’d ya like a raging Cajun in your face all the time, eh?

  39. Jum, no one is saying that the Tamils have no reason or right to protest.
Do they have the right to close down main arteries in the downtown core? On University Avenue there are at least three hospitals in the area where they are protesting. How would you feel if a member of your white working class family was delayed getting to one of them during an emergency? What if the delay cost them their life? Would you still feel the same about this situation then? OK that scenario might be a tab extreme (but not out of the realm of possibility) Let’s try this one. You are trying to get your white working class self to your job downtown, The main highway into the core is blocked off, You are four hours late for work. Your boss being an evil corporate conservative tells you that if you can’t make in on time he will get someone else who can. With the number of unemployed right now, that is no idle threat. Do you perhaps think might reconsider your position?

  40. ‘Nice to be you, Jum, young white Torontonian from a working-class family.
Are you paying the bills yet? Do you realize that the “Anglo-protestant heritage” segment of Canada’s population is footing the bill for these immigrants of convenience, and it’s getting to the point where we can barely pay our own bills let alone those of immigrants who hold two passports, can return to their country of origin whenever they want, and are sending Canadian money “home” to Sri Lanka — not spending it here in Canada? In other words, are you aware that too many sometime-citizen immigrants are bleeding us dry?
Look, I hold one passport only. I have no other country than Canada to give my allegiance to. What’s happened since the Liberals liberalized our immigration policy, allowing a very loose definition of “refugee,” in order to get the votes of huge blocks of people, is that Canada now has hundreds of thousands of immigrants, pulling on health care, education, and housing moneys to which they are not, necessarily, contributing — and certainly haven’t for very long if they are. These immigrants who, apparently, have the “right” to hold two passports, one Canadian and one from their country of origin, do not have an undivided loyalty to Canada and are quite happily, by the looks of it, using our country as a hotel where they can lodge, with food, health care, and education thrown in, while they send monetary benefits gained here — and at the expense of the rest of us — to their country of origin.
It’s a great arrangement for these Canadians of convenience and a lousy deal for the rest of us. So, Jum, tell me what’s “out of touch” about what I’m saying? It’s YOU who are out of touch with reality.
Multiculturalism is fine and dandy if all of the multi-cultures are paying their way and are contributing to the betterment of their neighbourhoods, their cities, and their new country — and if we are all equal under the law. But, as increasingly seems to be the case, if immigrants are here as freeloaders, happy to take all the benefits and perks of being Canadian but not in any way contributing to the long-term betterment of Canada, then what’s the advantage to those of us who have a permanent stake in our country?
There needs to be an end to two-passport, sometime-citizen, Canadians-of-convenience, immigrants. This is no way to build a country and, in fact, there’s every indication that these kinds of immigrants are badly damaging the fabric of our society.
And, Jum, as for ” … let[ting] people do or think whatever they want – as long as [they aren’t] break[ing] the law”: The recent demonstrations, where Tamil Tiger flags and T-shirts were ubiquitous, did break the law — and what did our law enforcement officers do? Has anyone gone to jail? Will anyone go to jail? As I said in an earlier post: There’s one law for the sometime-citizen, visible-minority immigrant (lenient to non-existent) and another for the rest of us.
I don’t have to like it. And not liking it doesn’t mean that I’m “out of touch,” as you so quaintly put it. I’d invite you, Jum, to get with the program.

  41. @piperpaul
I meant multicultural donkey obviously. Admittedly poor choice of words.
“How’d ya like a raging Cajun in your face all the time, eh?”
Prefer it as a burger, really.
Prey, what is a ‘stick dweller’?

  42. Yes, Jum, you let the ‘people do whatever they want’ and that’s the problem.

  43. @piperpaul
Come to think of it, is that the only thing you read in my post? Or the only thing you could take issue with?
Smells like nitpicking. Have a real go, why don’t you? Something mildly more intellectual than, well, whatever filler you did post.

  44. Do they have the right to block traffic? Yes, I think so. I visited the protest on University to see what was up, and noticed that they had let the police open up a lane for the ambulances to get into the hospitals, though it was closed to regular traffic. Your inconvenience or mine is less important than what they are protesting, I think (alleged genocide).
batb, these immigrants must be productive or else they would have no money to send home, and they would be unable to pay their very high Canadian rents and grocery bills, and the entire government infrastructure would have imploded. What is the problem with people treating “Canadian” as a job description instead of a political identity? Once again, this must be some kind of generation gap – I nor anyone I know under the age of thirty seems to care about nationalism, we have ‘quiet patriotism’. I don’t see any harm in having “Canadians of convenience”, given that most of them pay enough into the economy and social security that we are still immensely prosperous. I, for one, think that we GAIN by the influx of foreign expertise and culture, even if it is fleeting.

  45. Jum has been successfully indoctrinated with liberal white guilt. Sad indeed. Most of us however are colour blind and understand that mobs of any colour, shape, sex or size holding citizens hostage must not be tolerated.

  46. I missed Jum’s comment on the generation gap. Having four young productive and successful adult children who also understand the problem here, the claim of a generation gap is rubbish.
