Getting back to the Canadian colours, supposedly when the design for the new flag was introduced it had two blue borders with a central maple leaf to acknowledge the colours of the Union Jack and the Stars and Stripes thus acknowledging the common history of North America. The Liberals at the time would not allow “Tory” blue to be used on the flag, and we have been a benign communist state ever since. “O, Canada”

Not only does it make it less distinctive, it makes it one of the worst national flags, and there’s a lot of crap out there.
Flags, especially national flags, should be simple, recognizable from a distance, and unique.
Countries that follow these principles and have nice looking flags are Canada, UK, USA, Sweden, Norway, Finland and Japan. I know there’s more, but that’s just off the top of my head. Other flags that fit are the Cross of St. Andrew and St. George, the Quebec and Nova Scotia Provincial Flags.
Flags that don’t follow the principles above and look like crap are most of the European Tri-colours, American State Flags, Australia and New Zealand and pretty much all of the abominations from the African countries.
On the Simpsons, the Springfield Mayoral motto is: “Corruptus in Extremis”.

Okay just wanted to throw in my two cents. I don’t know if its worth the hassle of changing all of the seals on every gov’t building to a new motto. Do luv our flag. Stands out. Last but not least we should go back to the ROYAL Canadian Airforce and the ROYAL Canadian Navy. Thousand of men fought and died in those proud outfits time to bring them back. While the link to the chap that graded the world’s flags was a bit flakey, it did remind me of the reason for flags and the symbolism that flags, banners, coats of arms, seals and mottos have. Be it ugly or mysterious, these symbols have been a rallying point and source of pride and inspiration since the entity was formed.
Having some johnny come lately show up and try to change the crest of Santa Monica because it shows a mission with a cross on it, is extremely stupid. Fer gosh sakes, Santa is Spanish for saint! The settlers named the place after a saint. The same goes for the Canadian Red Ensign. There was absolutly no good reason to change it. I respect the new flag but my heart is with the one with history.

Josh has the right idea, although I disagree with some of his ratings. The Swiss and Israeli flags are nice, and I do like some of the State Flags, although most of them are poorly designed.
To the aptly named Enkidu, even though we share a Head of State and a long tradition with the UK, it is appropriate for us to have our own flag, preferably with our own colours. If the flag containing blue you’re refering to is the “Pearson Pennant”, it looks like it was created by an eight year old, and I’m glad it wasn’t chosen, for whatever reason.

I’ve been looking into that very thing.
First of all, in my own life I’ve been pushing this discussion at every opportunity. Surprisingly I’ve yet to find anyone(western Canadian that is) who thinks western separation is a bad idea. Sometime ago I commented here that there is only one solution and I got lots of support(I thought I was the only one). That prompted me to make one of those “free polls” and again to my surprise the pipples agree with me. http://poll.pollcode.com/h1p
What is the first step? Someone from a party like ASP must win a seat in Parliament; or, someone with a seat in the Conservative party must support this, which won’t and can’t happen, it would break the Conservative party.
I contacted the Alberta Separation Party and the Western Block Party. ASP seemed on the ball and organized but because of my residence in Sask they’re not an option. Regarding the WBP, although I empathize with Doug Christie’s position the WBP is unorganized, has no money and no support. So, where does that leave us? No where!
I’ve commented that it’s not a question of “if” it’s a question of “when” and “how”. It appears that a catalyst is necessary for this reaction to happen; and “right-wing extremists” to the south may be that catalyst.
How can this happen?
If it’s to happen in my useful lifetime I believe it will start with a Liberal government. When the PMSH realizes the Conservatives are finished, he(and others) will then have to decide if he/they will return to the west and lead us as a political entity(this is our best hope). Will a Liberal government intent on harming the west be enough to force someone like PMSH’s hand and do as I propose? Probably not; but, there appears to be a very polarized society south of us. Middle class people have been moving away from major cities east and west to smaller (conservative) central cities for a decade now. As conservatives gather to a defined geographical region the likelihood of these states walking away from the USA increases. This presents an unique window of opportunity for western Canadians and the aforementioned conservative Americans to unite under a common banner. Our own little Israel!
All of that being said, this is just my opinion and analysis of this issue. Check out my poll(linked above), the numbers are surprising. I recommend that you check out the ASP website, it’s a good one(educational). http://www.separationalberta.com/
By the way, I’ve found a way to “spin” separation so it works for everyone. Whether speaking to a socialist or a conservative it doesn’t matter, this is not an ideological discussion, this is about western Canadians(or Albertans in your case). It can be explained to a socialist that sending hundreds of billions to Ottawa and Quebec does nothing to help the starving or disadvantaged at home. There will be plenty of time to argue what to do with our money once the east is out of our pockets. This is truly a nonpartisan issue.

SDH – I pretty much agree with you on all of these. How do you like Switzerland’s? Israel’s? The Isle of Man’s is pretty interesting… New Mexico, Texas, Alaska, and South Carolina have nice state flags, my own New Hampshire does not.
