Reader Tips

Good evening ladies and gentlemen, welcome to SDA Late Nite Radio. Tonight, for your delectation and pursuant to our Friday night international espionage show, here are Leo G. Carroll as Mr. Alexander Waverly, Robert Vaughn as Napoleon Solo, and David McCallum as Illya Kuryakin, with guest stars William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, and Werner Klemperer, performing The Project Strigas Affaire, II, III, IV, V, & VI episode of The Man from U.N.C.L.E., from which you surely no doubt recall that United Network Command for Law and Enforcement are battling their archenemy: Technological Hierarchy for the Removal of Undesirables and the Subjugation of Humanity; in 1965.

Your Reader Tips are, as always, welcome in the comments.

  1. Very kewl Vit – I had no idea that Nimoy and Shatner paired up together before, . . . . um . . what was that TV show again?
It’s funny watching “Nightmare at 20000 Feet” – I showed it to my girls – they thought it was funny – not scary at all. How times have changed

  2. And Werner Klemperer too
As mentioned many months ago, Mahler’s Second Symphony has many special moments, and is one of my favourite pieces of music. Otto Klemperer (pater) met Mahler whilst conducting the offstage group, and they were close for years afterwards.
For the Canadian connection, OK conducted the Montreal Symphony Orchestra from time to time as guest conductor. After falling in Montreal, he subsequently had to conduct from a chair
Despite all of his accomplishments, I’m sure he’ll be remembered by history for his son’s words . . . . “Ho-gan!!”

  3. Youtube is a wonderful thing.
Let’s make sure the Fascists (the Left) don’t destroy it.

  4. Gibbs on NCIS was right – Ducky did look like Illya Kuryakin when he was younger.

  5. Well, Sysk, should one study the show, one would find that Waverly (British), Solo (American), and Kuryakin (Russian) were all acting together in concert to oppose generic third-party bad guys. Funny how that works. Still, the whole set-up, including the UN/CLE pronounciation, does provide fertile ground for thought, in retrospect some 44 years ago now, don’t you think? And while I’m certainly not in favour of the subjugation of humanity, I think one can reasonable argue in favour of the removal of undesirables, at least if it’s gotten to the point where they’re puking into the Port decanter.
Meanwhile, for those of you who think that Kuryakin looks like Trotsky, Kuryakin was in disguise in that image I captured supra. Please, watch the show, or pick your own reader tip. Thanks. And look on the bright side, David McCallum is currently scheduled for a role in next Friday night’s SDA Late Nite Radio too 😉

  6. Sorry Vit – I will be a more patient person and will sit and watch the show now!

  7. Perhaps it’s time for a Canadian (CHRC) version, the Man from BUNGLE.

  8. That doesn’t really work, Peter. If you want to riff off the UNCLE thing, and not vary two parameters at the same time (which is always dangerous in incremental comedy), and given that C and G are glottally distinct, then you would probably be better off with one of: carbuncle, endosiphuncle, furuncle, homuncle, nuncle, peduncle, prepeduncle, pseudonymuncle, ratiuncle, sectiuncle, sermuncle, siphuncle, subpeduncle, or vibratiuncle. I’m just saying; you know.

  9. Obama prepares to throw Israel under the bus
    By Melanie Phillips
http://www.JewishWorldReview.com | Barak Obama is attempting to throw Israel under the Islamist bus, and he’s getting American Jews to do his dirty work for him. White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel reportedly told the Israel lobbying group AIPAC on Sunday that efforts to stop Iran

  10. Heh.
Vit, you’ve bin’ waitin’ to drop this one for a while now, I’ll bet…
Good on ya. Excellent stuff, and your timing is excellent. (although I haven’t figured out why yet)
It must be more than the Star Trek movie, eh?
    Thank you.
    Mad Mike

  11. Change of subject: Isn’t ANYBODY responsible for ANYTHING any more?
I just watched the National and two of the stories, with sympathetic clucking from Carol McNeil were:
    – Another child was lost in a house fire on the Sandy Bay Reserve in Manitoba. That’s the second fatal fire there this year. In each instance, there were a dozen people in the house, including eight children. So who is to blame? Why we all are of course.
The adults couldn’t get all of the children out in time, “because the houses were overcrowded”, and they were overcrowded because the gumint hadn’t built more. The most recent one to burn was only a few months old BTW.
    – The fool who lost his wife to hypothermia this winter when they skied out of bounds, without food, adequate clothing or even matches and without telling anyone of their intentions is now suing everything that moves. The pair got lost, ate snow for a week and were rescued a day after the woman expired.
Someone should take the clown helicopter skiing without skis and without landing the helicopeter.
Unloading at 1,000 feet above terrain would be about right.

  12. BUNGLE = Big Ugly Neo-Governmental Liberal Excess
I admit the “man” part needs some work.

  13. Remember that American comedian who made a quip at three in the morning about the Canadian military? Well, get this, my channel guide (I’m on Satellite) said I had “mail.” I opened it. This is what it said:
“We’ve made changes to how we offer Fox news. There have been recent inappropriate and disrespectful comments on the channel regarding the Canadian Military’s efforts in Afghanistan, comments that were found to be offensive to our customers. In response, we are moving the channel to an opt-in service starting May 19.”
In other words, Fox will be removed from customers’ channel lineup unless the customers contact Shaw to tell them not to delete it.
    Ridiculous.

  14. Run, do not walk, to the Star Trek movie. I loved every minute of it. Just the right mix of high tech and cheese.

  15. MORE LIBERAL HYPOCRISY
Tonight, CBC.Ca is featuring a story where Fred Doucet, Mulroney’s adviser and trusted friend, allegedly hid facts in the 1985 Air India Flight 182 bombing.
Is this going to overshadow Ruby Dhalla and the “slave” story?? I doubt it!
It was a cheap shot on the part of the CBC to run a 24 year old story to try and cover up for the three day old “Dhallagate”
Re: Air India flight 182: Where are the alleged documents that “suggest” that Doucet tried to cover up the Air India story??

  17. Thanks for the memories Vitruvius. Haven’t watched Man from Uncle for quite a long time and remember thinking it was really neat when I was a kid. I liked Ilya Kuryakin’s character then and it’s probably why I watched NCIS as it appeared something was familiar. I didn’t hear the line “what did Ducky look like when he was younger” until after I’d decided to Google David McCallum as I knew I’d seen him somewhere before. Now that History Channel has NCIS on every day of the week I finally heard the Ilya Kuryakin line.
Another series that I’d like to see again is Get Smart mainly to see if I still find it as funny as I did 40 years ago.
On a more serious note, there is a lengthy article at wattsupwiththat on use of ocean temperatures over the last 10-20 years to refute AGW. Atmospheric temperatures are of relevance to people who happen to be immersed in a volume of air at a certain temperature but the heat content of the atmosphere is miniscule compared to the heat content of the oceans. The first 2.5 meters of ocean have the same heat content as the whole of the atmosphere about them and the mean ocean depth is somewhat in excess of 2.5 meters.
    Check out: http://wattsupwiththat.com/2009/05/06/the-global-warming-hypothesis-and-ocean-heat/#more-7646
for the most damning refutation of the AGW hypothesis. The AGW fanatics have made explicit predictions regarding ocean heat content as a result of the massive amount of global warming that is occuring primarily in their observations. Their predictions are that ocean heat content has substantially increased over the last decade. There is only one minor problem with this theory: ocean heat content has been slowly decreasing over the past decade. The difference in their predictions and actual measurements is on the order of 4.2 x10^22 joules over the last 5 years. A quick glance at the AGW theory graph superimposed on the actual data reveals that there is a very major problem with the AGW models. IMHO this is enough to totally discredit the theory. Here is a prediction that they made and it was proven false.
I’d like the mathematically inclined SDA readers to peruse this article to see if there are any defects. If the logic withstands scrutiny then this is something that can be used in legal actions against governments who have enacted legislation based on invalid principles. I’d love to be involved in a class action lawsuit against the BC government to force them to return all of the carbon taxes they’ve collected by lying about the reasons they were collecting them. I’m saving all of my reciepts for gasoline and natural gas and all other reciets in which an environmental levy is collected and am looking forward to getting this money stolen from me back.

  18. Re: The Man From U.N.C.L.E. In a politically correct world and in a post women lib era, they might would now call the show, “The Girl From A.U.N.T.Y. (American Underworld Notorious Tyrants)

  19. I have this vision of the year 3,000 AD, some future version of the CBC holding daily meetings to interrogate Mulroney’s brain held in a bottle, a new scandal every week. By this time, the total number of viewers is seven.
In this vision, Harper is still not letting anyone say anything without his permission.
And Iggy is getting really bored with Stornoway.

  20. Kathryn,
NCIS is one of my favourite shows. Gibbs is the best. Love Denouzo as well. Don’t get me started on Zeva BTW, yowza!

  21. Ruby plays Pin the tale on the brother-Bourque
Why is Ruby Dhalla always the victim?

  22. For anyone in Hamilton area (or even Toronto, if you must) there’s a rather nice car show going on in Caledonia today. Caledonia Fairgrounds, there’s a swap meet, kewl cars, the usual vendors selling crappy t-shirts, and etc.
The Phantom-Mobile! ooooh, ahhhh! is there on my filthy trailer right now, drawing crowds of awe struck admirers. Oh wait, sorry , that’s the line up for the bathroom. My bad. ~:D
Anyway, if you’re tired of perching in front of your computer, come on down and have some fun at the car show. Bring your kewl ride if you have one, or buy one when you get there.

  23. Garth Turner no show
“Failure to show means that more than a dozen people working directly on the program and 200,000 regular viewers were inconvenienced.
I have to say, however, that with former MP Garth Turner I’m not particularly surprised. Turner has been on my show several times over the years, sometimes requesting the opportunity, and now that he has a book out, Sheeple, we were willing to give him a full hour of interview. Rather generous of us, actually. ”

  24. Alan, MSM has been very irresponsible on this. In peddling his book trashing Harper, he was very popular last week, doing the book promotion tour on the tv news programs (the friendly ones). But now that his credibility and reputation is in tatters (okay, it has been for a log time) there’s nothing to report it seems. Certainly Coren’s 200,000 viewers per night is a lot more than any program of its kind would get (such as Politics or Power Play) so it should be reported. But what I love is the irony. Garth’s claims in his book are that Harper is controlling and doesn’t tolerate dissent. And yet Garth himself doesn’t won’t address criticism and shuts the COMMENTS off on his website.

  25. bryanr: “Why is Ruby Dhalla always the victim?”
Because, her equity/feminist/multicultural/kid-of-a-single-mom bona fides are all in place.
Given this pedigree, Ruby gets what Ruby wants every time. Nothing is ever Ruby’s fault, it’s everybody else’s — and we all get to pay, and pay, and pay.
The host culture/apple is being eaten from the inside. Soon, the parasites will ensure there’s nothing left of the apple — the seeming intention of the lib-left/equity/feminist/multi-culti lobby — but, then, what are they going to feed off?

  27. Rasmussen has a tracking poll on Congressional Support.
In Jan of 08, the Democrats were at 43% and the Republicans at 38. Over the 2008 year, the Democrats were always in the high 40s, about 47% average, while the Republians were about 37% average.
The Democrats began to lose ground in March when they slipped below 40; they are now at 39%, while the Republicans have moved to 40%.
This is still not a trend; it could be a blip and it is time, now, for the Republicans to define a few leaders and issues. They couldn’t do this too early in the Obama regime; they had to allow independents and indeed, everyone, to realize that Obama is harmful to America.
A key problem is that almost 70% of GOP voters think that Congress Republicans are out of touch with the base. Indeed, what is emerging is a Washington governance that is completely out of touch with Americans.
The Democratic latte crowd IS in touch, but latte-drinkers are passive govt-funded employess, not entrepreneurs. They absorb money; they don’t make it. Therefore, no economy can function with the latte crowd in control; that group has to be marginalized to their conferences and rhetoric.

  28. From today’s National Post vis a vis WHO and the swine flu:
    http://www.nationalpost.com/news/story.html?id=1578331
“Sometimes some of us think WHO stands for the ‘World Hysteria Organization,'” said Dr. Richard Schabas, who was Ontario’s chief medical officer of health from 1987 to 1997. “There seems to be a culture at WHO where they’ve convinced themselves that a pandemic is such an imminent danger that they overreact.”
WHO is “the directing and coordinating authority for health within the United Nations system … responsible for … shaping the health research agenda, setting norms and standards …providing technical support to countries and monitoring and assessing health trends” (http://www.who.int/about/en/).
Hmmm … ‘sounds like a pretty far-reaching organization, doesn’t it? Lots of potential to play power politics favouring the UN view of things …

  29. I read this morning on Bourque.org that Thugo Chavez has used his military to effectively seize control of the country’s oil servicing industry. Much of it is American owned.
I wonder what Obummer thinks of his new buddy now.
