Drove from km178 on Sierra Yoyo Desan road (NE BC) to Grande Prairie yesterday and have been on the go since first week of January (maintenance) and there is sweet f%^k all on the go with regards to oil and gas activity out here. Nothing happening. No traffic hauling drill pipe or yellow jacket. Talked to lots of operators and hotel staff and everybody is in shock at the slow rate of work, especially this time of year. Few of the companies we sent rate sheets out to refused any rate increses and are asking for rate decrease from last year. (last year was end of 4 year rate that began in summer of 2005, before Katrina hit, already below market pricing, eh.)
Some people are going to be really hard done by come June if this doesn’t swing around fast. This is the slowest I have seen in 11 years. The construction/drilling workforce are really going to get a shit kicking here. And I am the eternal optimist type.
As I was driving on the winter access roads past all the seismic cut lines I thought what a shame that we aren’t chasing more of the gas beneath the surface. I guess that kind of stimulus thinking is way not cool. I understand that commodity pricing is low, today, but there’s way too much government intervention in the energy sector, both federally and provincially. If Harper and, it appears, every other politician of significance in this land are truly betting that this deficit will only be temporary and that the economy will recover in a year or two, they are betting on the wrong horse.
The economy of North America is suffering from an inability to compete with nations like India, China, Mexico and many others. That’s essentially why we’re having a recession. Harper’s “stimulus” package does nothing to rein in the ability of organized labour to hold our economy hostage to their whims, nothing to decrease the size and scope of the public sector, and nothing to lessen the regulatory burden on business. Instead, we are supposedly going to “compete” with India by building more hockey arenas, museums, and money-losing rapid transit systems.
It’s inevitable that the three levels of government involved in doling out this stimulus will not be able to simply borrow all the money they need. The Bank of Canada has already begun to print whatever is necessary to finance this spending orgy. This will result in an inflationary spiral not unlike what we went through in the 70’s.
For those who think that this will be a harmless distraction, think again. Many investors were sheltered from the ravages of the inflation of the 70’s by thirty year mortgages. My parents’ farm was financed that way, so that when inflation hit they actually enjoyed a windfall from what came to be seen as ridiculously low interest rates.
That won’t happen again. I’m not aware of anyone offering mortgage terms longer than five years before the rate has to be re-negotiated. So if you think you are going to “invest” in this stimulus, make sure the loan gets paid off before five years are up. Otherwise, you may find yourself “stimulated” by 20% interest payments. By the time this nonsense settles down, I doubt that anyone will be able to get a mortgage for more than one year at a time. That’s gong to make long-term investment planning virtually impossible. When that happens, the debt bubble will have truly burst, although this time it will be all three levels of government that will be bankrupt.

I am not going to diss Danny Williams because he stands up for the people that elected him. NFLD has contributed way more than they have ever received from Quebec. Quebec is the province that has benefited from every other province in this confederation. Quebec worked out a ‘deal’ to steal the hydro power from NFLD, the Fed government ‘sold’ foreign nations the right to over fish the Grand Banks, Canada has reneged on every promise it made to the people of NFLD after WWII.
Yukon and Nunavut produce nothing, contribute nothing yet people OK billions to these luxury ‘have not’ because they ‘will not (work) welfare territories…then there is Quebec!! When was the last time anyone got a $ form that belle province? We got lots of Cod Fish (in the Cypress Hills) during the Dirty Thirties for free, from the people of NFLD – and NFLD was NOT a part of Canada in those days, so my Dad told me.
I have met people from every province in Canada and I must say that NFLDers are the most generous – they are not ‘small’ people. Danny is not small either, IMO; he knows Canada’s track record of double crossing NFLD.

Let me use an analogy to see if I understand the newfie gripe. An employer offers a wage package with two alternatives: $25 per hour with no benefits, or $20 per hour with benefits.

Shamrock – you should read the history of NFLD and Canada. Why do you not object to giving trillions to Quebec? NFLD has been a ‘scapegoat’ for Quebec for all the years it has been the 10th province – Canada has looted the resources of NFLD, given the NFLD people ‘bailouts’ (the first being the ‘baby bonus’ after WWII ended to con war widows into voting to join Canada) to replace payment and entitlement to the resources of their own province. The people were sold out by their own politicians (of course). The Churchill Falls hydro power that Quebec sells to USA is a pretty blatant example of the betrayal, IMO. Allowing foreigners to fish out the Grand Banks is another example, and just where is that railway NFLD was promised to enable them to ship resources to market..?
