Good evening ladies and gentlemen, welcome to SDA Late Nite Radio. Tonight, for your delectation and pursuant to our Friday night old-time radio crime-detective show, here is Dana Andrews starring as Matt Sevetik in the The Black Gospel episode of I Was A Communist For The FBI (1953, 26:58).
Your Reader Tips are, as always, welcome in the comments.

Try link again?
If you’re suggesting, PiperPaul, that the above Black Gospel link isn’t working for you, well, I just tested it again on Red Hat Fedora Linux and on OS/X, and it works from here, and it’s the same sort of link to http://www.freeotrshows.com I’ve used many times before, so perhaps the problem is at your end?
Vit, my view page source shows:
,,,_Black_Gospel,_The.m3u
No file format specified.
Hmm, what does this do for you, PiperPaul:
http://www.freeotrshows.com/otr/i/iwas.1953.02.18_Black_Gospel,_The.m3u
OK, works. All(?) your links in the past were to YouTube, so both my brain cells said: “Hey! That’s not right!”
Well, actually, PiperPaul, for the last six months the Friday night shows have almost all been links to http://www.freeotrshows.com, but that’s neither here nor there. I’m still puzzled about the broken link. I have an idea: I mean, obviously, what’s the one possibly unusual thing about that URL? That’s right, the comma (“,”). I just checked, and none of the other freeotrshows URLs have commas. PiperPaul, I’ve modified the original link first shown in this entry, to include quotes (‘”‘s) around the URL; please refresh and go back and try it again and let me know if that works.
Ah, I see now. I’m confusing your Friday Night shows with the daily Reader Tips feature wherein you link to a lot of YouTube stuff.
My Mac popped up a notice since it wanted me to confirm that I actually wanted to open the file (it does this with PDFs as well), so I assumed that there was a broken link.
Being an ex-Windows guy and new to OSX, I’m wary of popup notices. When I saw that your referenced URL didn’t have a file format extension I thought the fully-formatted link might have not made it through for whatever reason.
Thus endeth geek talk from me tonight unless you want to discuss dead legs in propane piping systems.
Roger that, PiperPaul, situation understood. So that’s it for me too on that issue, thanks for your considered debugging feedback. On the matter of “dead legs in propane piping systems”, I’ll leave you with this U.S. Chemical Safety Board video: Fire From Ice.
Ha! That link’s been a headliner at my site for weeks. There’s a lot of other (engineering) cool stuff at CSB.

Small world, eh what? I first mentioned the CSB videos here at SDA on June 22, 2007, PiperPaul. There are more now, of course; indeed the whole collection is now available via a single USCSB Channel page at YouTube. I think that the final hour-long Anatomy of a Disaster report on BP’s Texas City isomerization unit failure is the most instructive. The software I am the putative leader of is used to prevent just these sorts of failures. Yet as my principal colleague, who is a professor who teaches his department’s risk analysis courses, often says: a disaster is twelve little problems that happen in just the right order. We can’t prevent all of them.
SUPREME COURT HEARS ARGUMENTS OVER ‘LIGHT’ CIGARETTES
Justice Anthony Kennedy’s trouble in accepting an argument made by the Maine smokers that they need not prove a link between smoking and one’s health. “[I]f I take away from your oral argument that it is your position that this suit is not based on a link between smoking and health, I’m going to have difficulty in accepting your position in this entire case.”
The most critical analysis came from Justice Samuel Alito, who took the FTC to task for the agency’s seemingly permissive policies towards big tobacco. He specifically blasted a discredited testing procedure used to justify the “light” labels. “The FTC’s position seems to me incomprehensible. If these figures are meaningless, then you should have prohibited them — are misleading, you should have prohibited them a long time ago. And you’ve created this whole problem by, I think, passively approving the placement of these figures on the — on — in the advertisements. And if they are misleading, then you have misled everybody who’s bought those cigarettes for a long time,” Alito said.
This may now look promising for a class action “Smokers vs. obscene profiteering by Government & Anti Smoking Groups”
BTW: Arizona GOV. cancelled Anti-Smoking Media Blitz. Perhaps the hypocrisy is beginning to sink the gravy train. (GOV is Dem)
Here’s the infamous poll queen bitching at Stephen Harper in a card shop: http://www.torontosun.com/news/torontoandgta/2008/12/11/7710636.html
And there’s a choice quote about The Coalition taking over if Harper doesn’t listen to her!
Re the Senate appts, great quote from one “P.Skelly” here: http://www.torontosun.com/comment/columnists/christina_blizzard/2008/12/12/7720126-sun.html
“So let me get this straight. It is ok for the coalition party to steal the ppls votes by trying to topple our elected PM. It’s ok for this coalition to promise these senate seats to Green, BQ members during their back room deals. It’s ok for the Liberal party to stack the senate seats where the Libs have (58) seats to Cons(20) & some were given right before Chretien stepped down (lame duck anyone). It’s ok for the Liberals to shelve the senate reform & stone wall Harper with their majority but it’s not acceptable for our PM to fill these empty seat with conservatives so there might be a chance in the future to reform it?? Where is the logic?? all I see is more LIBERAL HYPOCRISY! I support Harper & the Conservative Party completely in this move”
Yes, Vitruvius, it is a fascinating business. Feel free to contact me via the website. I want to know more about your software.
CAD and computer visualization can do some amazing things regarding education. Obviously I’m not referring to weather simulations.
Vitruvius and PiperPaul ~ Delightful geekfest! I’ve spent many happy hours watching CSB videos too, and worked with the creators of 3D visualizations and interactive simulations for safety and training. It is, indeed, amazing technology.

“Why did an ad agency donate $10,000 to Warren Kinsella’s 1997 election campaign?
If Warren Kinsella disagrees with the legal findings of fact made against him by Justice John Gomery in his Judicial Inquiry into Adscam, why didn’t Kinsella file an appeal?
Other Liberals who felt wronged by Justice Gomery appealed. But not Kinsella. Justice Gomery said Kinsella’s conduct was “highly inappropriate”. Kinsella grumbled about it, but he didn’t take any steps to overturn it.
It’s funny; Kinsella has made a cottage industry of denouncing Justice Gomery. On his website alone, Kinsella calls Justice Gomery a “joke and a circus”; “grossly biased”, someone running a “despicable political inquisition”, someone who deals in “smears” and shredding reputations, and on and on. A quick Google search finds hundreds more insults. In one op-ed, he comes out and states the obvious: he holds Gomery’s Commission “in contempt”.
So, it’s typical Kinsella – a cascade of insults. But Kinsella never uses one particular insult: he never says Justice Gomery’s findings were legally incorrect.
That’s a pretty glaring omission, don’t you think?”

“Signs of a Kremlin Fearful Of Unrest
12 December 2008By Nikolaus von Twickel / Staff Writer
This is the 12th in a series of reports about the effect of the global financial crisis on Russia
Sociologist Yevgeny Gontmakher has painted a disturbing picture of what might emerge from the financial crisis.
As Gontmakher sees it, a provincial industrial town will see huge protests after massive layoffs at its main factory next year. The authorities scramble haphazardly to contain the unrest. Violence will spread, ultimately reaching Moscow.
The scenario, published under the headline “Novocherkassk 2009” in Vedomosti last month, is purely fictitious. But it triggered a very real reaction from the authorities. The government’s media watchdog fired off a warning to Vedomosti that it was inciting extremism. Vedomosti is part of Independent Media Sanoma Magazines, the parent company of The Moscow Times.
Novocherkassk is a town in the southern Rostov region where Soviet police brutally quashed rioting workers in 1962.
Gontmakher, a deputy social protection minister and Kremlin official in the 1990s, said he had not expected such a response from the government, but the threat is real and growing daily as the crisis takes it toll. “Of course they are worried, and they should be,” he said of the government.”

“Something is rotten in Norway – 500,000 sq-km of sea ice disappears overnight
13 12 2008
I had planned to do a post yesterday evening about how sea ice area and extent had returned to very near normal levels. But I was tired, so I saved off the data from the NANSEN arctic sea ice site.
This morning I was shocked to discover that overnight, huge amounts of sea ice simply disappeared. Fortunately I had saved the images and a copy of the webpage last night. Here is the before and after in a blink comparator:”
