Reader Tips

Good evening, EBD here. Welcome to Vitruvius’ SDA Late Nite Radio.
Several weeks ago I had the good fortune to see American songwriter Lucinda Williams performing live in a small local venue. By the end of the two-and-a-half hour concert I knew I’d witnessed something very special. Tonight, for your delectation, here is Ms. Williams singing the title track from her 1998 release Car Wheels on a Gravel Road.
Your Reader Tips are, as always, welcome in the comments.

Shameless plug, I’m taking Paladiea (Stormy Days of March) to task over at The Phantom Soapbox.
Self defense is one of my hot button issues, and Pal said something truly amazing I can’t let pass.
Clickety click The Phantom in the “posted by” line there for the details. Comments are welcome, feel free to fill in blanks as they occur.

  3. Lucinda is great, I have seen & listen to her live a few times.
Authentic American music at its best.

  6. Vitruvius, I find your eclectic selections always interesting on SAD late night.
Thanks for picking one of my favourite, if not my favourite female country artist. Forget the dixie drivels and the pretty boy cowboys. Lucinda is the real thing.

  7. Happy Thanksgiving to all our American friends!!!
I’m sure some one has something honorable and creative to link here(I’m not tech savvy)
Let’s try to over come the dissing that America is taking, with the lowest blows coming last night as the news from Mumbai was unfolding.

Captain ‘Alfie’ Sutton: last survivor of the 1940 Taranto raid
The last surviving veteran of the attack on the Italian fleet at Taranto in 1940, “Alfie” Sutton was the observer (navigator) of the Swordfish torpedo bomber flown by Lieutenant F. M. A. Torrens-Spence, in the second wave of assaulting aircraft, which was led by Lieutenant-Commander J. W. Hale. The raid, carried out by pitifully slow biplane aircraft whose technology owed more to the First World War than the Second, against a modern navy bristling with anti-aircraft guns in a well-defended southern Italian harbour, achieved devastating results out of all proportion to the size of the force involved…

  9. RAND Corporation, The Kefaya Movement: A Case Study of a Grassroots Reform Initiative
Kefaya, also known as the Egyptian Movement for Change, was an indigenous movement for political reform organized in late 2004 in opposition to the regime of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak. This examination of Kefaya’s birth, its accomplishments, and the reasons for its decline is based on an analysis of the work of Egyptian scholars and Arabic-language media reports (including online and new media), as well as structured interviews with persons associated with and observers of Kefaya and the Muslim Brotherhood. It explores the challenges to grassroots attempts to bring about democracy and implement political reform in the Arab world in general and in Egypt in particular and looks at the implications of such movements for U.S. policy in the region.

  10. Thank you, bluetech, from a friend south of the border. One of the things that I’m giving thanks for today is smalldeadanimals.com. That applies to Kate, her fellow contributors, and the commenters here. This is one of those rare places (on the web and in the world), where I can hang out with people who have their heads screwed on straight. Thanks to all for making it that sort of place.

  11. Great musical pick EBD. I have been a fan of LW for a very long time. First heard of her in a drilling rig camp in Zama, Alberta.
Happy thanksgiving United States of America.

  14. Maz2: Re: Liberals emergency meeting. Try to post a comment in favor of these cuts at the Toronto Star. Guess, that they will be doing lots of “comment approvals” before they will find any in favor of supporting the Liberals on this one! That paper is not even fit to line a bird cage.

  15. Exetaz: I’d recommend, for starters, either Car Wheels on a Gravel Road or — my favorite — double-album Live at the Filmore.

  16. “Opposition preparing to form government?
National Newswatch has learned that the federal opposition parties are considering the idea of forming what can technically be described as a coalition government – in the event the Tory government is brought down next week.”

  17. Exetaz: I’ve been a Lucinda Williams for 20 years and I still think you can’t beat her first two mainstream albums Lucinda Williams and Sweet Old World. The tracks on those two albums contain her finest songwriting in my opinion.

  18. I’m checking out some Lucinda Williams tracks on Youtube right now. Not bad, actually, considering it’s not really my style of music. It’s certainly better than the average country song of the past few decades, and I’m impressed by the fact it sounds good live, because I rarely like live music as much as well-recorded studio work. She has a very good band behind her!
I will take slight issue with a commenter above who used the term “authentic”. I never use this word to describe music because I consider all of it to be “authentic”, from the heavily-produced work of Phil Spector or Bob Crewe to spontaneous or unpolished material like John Lennon’s “Give Peace A Chance” or the Proclaimers’ “Letter From America”.
