Interesting. After all, the kidnappings are more and more becoming an economic process, a means of raising money, and have little to do with ideology.
The Taliban and Al Qaeda are moving out of ideology and into pure criminality. The same thing happened in C. America, when the Soviet Union withdrew its support and financing of various communist rebel groups. These groups transformed into criminal gangs focused on raising money by hostage-taking and the drug economy.
Same thing is happening with the Al Qaeda and Taliban. I wonder if they realized that they kidnapped one of their own and that, therefore, the economic return might be, well, zero.
I wonder if she has managed to explain this to them? Or if they are indifferent to her explanations of love and admiration? If they are only interested in ‘the money’. Hmmm?

The theory is that he arranged the kidnapping. Hard to figure out the motive here since no money exchanged hands and no soldiers were withdrawn, but it was one of the earlier kidnappings.

Current government policy is that no ransoms are paid….Given that she is islamic they cant kill her, for religous reasons.
She is a canadian citizen, which means the government should follow policy and try to get her released without paying a ransom period.
If one was paid before, but not admitted to…oh well. If the taliban want to come out and say they do these things for money then fine, we still do nothing.

CBC Radio did cover the story and interviewed one of her friends, who argued that, unlike the case of Melissa Fung, Khadija’s story needed to be told in order the pressure the Canadian government to work for her speedy release. I agree with Stephen that the Government of Canada should follow its normal procedures when dealing with these matters, but they needn’t have any sense of urgency. They should also check to see if she has violated any laws so that, if she is released, she can be given a proper welcome back to Canada.
“Kidnapping” is an expired description of what has become an industry in the middle east.
