  1. Those were the days! Thanks to my parents and grandparents, I grew up listening to this wonderful music. It makes one happy, despite life’s trials.
(And then I think of the trainwreck of the present CBC Radio 2. Good Lord, deliver us.)
    Thanks, Vitruvius!

  2. We have the messiah coming to our town this weekend. Can anyone tell me why Obamessiah is gracing us with his presense. Seems he loves to give campaigne rallies near bridges. That is on hell of a scary thought. Apparently their are 60 democrats living in or near Windsor ON. and he is putting on a rally for them. This guy seems to be flushed with money so why could he not give a handout to the DNC when asked. What he doesn’t know is there a some Republicans living in this area also. The wannabe world emperor.

  3. Thanks, Vitruvius. The big band era is musically one of the grandest. Let me hop in with one from Jimmy Dorsey; Green Eyes.
**http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r2n2aaghnM0&feature=related** Sorry for the cut and paste requirement. Tinyurl seemed to be so slow.

  4. Please excuse my absent letters and spelling, I’m very disgusted with this situation and can’t think straight. Ever hear of our candidates holding rallies in foreign countries.

  5. Dolly; try listening to the great music from a wonderful era, it’s so calming. The voters will have their say and you may just be happy with the result. (fingers crossed)
I have stopped campaign working partially because of the depression it sets up in me. The media is maddening and the voters seem so fickle. “Oh; I wouldn’t vote for him; I don’t like the way he smiles”. “Seeing him trip getting off the airplane did it for me”.

  6. Thanks Gunny, I’ll take your advice. Been following both of these elections and I guess it’s getting to me. Leaving for Vegas Saturday and won’t be in town when that little god shows up.

  7. Wanna be a Green candidate? Yes you can. Over at rabble someone has posted an e-mail that shows the desperation of the greens to attract candidates. No experience necessary, but they do prefer that you are one of the minorities that the HRC’s would defend. If you are not up to running for them(rather than away) it would be nice if you could send them a name of someone who might. No kidding, they are a real national party, and with any luck I may be a candidate, but you can be one too…This link to their plea may work,if not hold your nose and go to the babble/rabble site . http://election.rabble.ca/post/50303099/rabble-ca-exclusive-green-party-desperate-to-find

  8. Cbc has still not mentioned anything on air about Garth’s little fiasco with his campaign manager’s son. Are they so low that they will allow themselves to be lied about, if it will help the liberals? Obviously, they are.

  9. Heh! I was sitting in a neighbourhood pub in Grande Prairie, having a pizza and a pint, and idly watching some boxing on the sports network. On comes a CPC election ad, featuring the “Dion’s Scratch and Lose” lottery ticket. I got a great chuckle out of it.
A colleague, who came to Canada from eastern Europe a year or two ago, spotted it too, and spontaneously said, “They got that right.”
    Double heh!

  10. Much as I loath saying positive things about CBC wallyj, Susan Ormastead did a piece on the whole Garth thing a couple days ago.

  14. Dolly:
I may be wrong on this so if anyone else has knowledge of US campaign rules please correct me.
It is my understanding that candidates are forbidden to campaign on foreign soil. That does not preclude Obama from “visiting” or “dropping in” on an event, however.

  15. Where ya been folks, what was Obama doing on his Eurpoean tour, grabbing an audience from a rock star event, speaking to cheering a horde high on whatever? Given the communications of this 21st century he got a bit of campaign mileage from that.
The Canadian MSM love him, he’ll be covered and he will talk politics, that’s what it’s all about.

Agreed politics was his main reason for visiting Europe but his stated reasons for that visit wasn’t for that purpose.I think you would be hard pressed to find a statement he made indicating “vote for me”.
Having said that, it is obvious that was his reason for going, he just didn’t overtly state it.

  18. With the economy being a focus in this election..,I really wish we could get a running tally of the cost of the Lib/NDP election ‘promises.’ Seems to me,that a lot of them are so over the top,we need to keep track, and figure out the spin, and if they are realistic.Any good math wizards around? There could maybe be a spot at top of Kate’s popular site, just to keep things up to date and ‘real’

  19. The Muslims move to get UN to enact law against insulting Islam:
“OIC to move UNGA against caricatures”
    Staff Report
ISLAMABAD: A resolution against the publication of blasphemous caricatures of the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) in various countries will be presented in the upcoming session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), an Organisation of Islamic Conference (OIC) representative said on Tuesday.
“The resolution will demand legislation against the publication of blasphemous caricatures of revered personalities and derogatory remarks against religions. It will also demand [sacrilegious] actions be declared a crime,” OIC Secretary General’s Special Representative on Kashmir Ezzat Kamel Mufti told a news conference.
Mufti said a particular group in America and the European Union had been launching attacks against Islam. “However, we should not get emotional and resort to any kind of violence, including suicide bombings,” he said.

  20. Interesting times ahead…
The Spotlight Shines On The US Treasury:
The official deficit of the US government is projected to more than double this fiscal year (which ends on
September 30). If any of the regular Treasury debt “auctions” is under-subscribed, some of the debt paper
on offer will be left on its counters unsold! The news of that happening would fly in an instant all over
the world – and the global solvency crisis of the US would be ON! The unthinkable would have
happened. The US Treasury couldn’t find enough willing lenders anymore. Worldwide, the financial
markets would go into convulsions. Central banks in most other nations would look with fear at their
“reserves” – most of which are held as US Treasury and Agency (yes, that’s Fannie and Freddie) debt
paper. The fear of all these central banks would be that from now on, there would be no secondary
market where they could sell part of their US-based “reserves” should they need to do so. There would be
next to no willing buyers of the US Treasury paper except at discounts which would make all US
Treasury and Agency paper look very uncomfortably like all the existing US “subprime” paper.
The Spotlight Pins Down The US Treasury:
Obviously, any financial organisation which takes on $US 5.3 TRILLION of the debt of two other
organisations as well as their $US 3 TRILLION in off balance sheet obligations deserves very close
scrutiny. What does one find when one examines the books of this organisation, the US Treasury?
One finds spending vastly exceeding revenues – taxes in this case. One finds funded debts of $US 9.6
TRILLION and climbing fast. One finds UNFUNDED liabilities which it has contracted to deliver to the
American people of close to $US 100 TRILLION. If that near unimaginable sum is doubted, examine the
words of a former American high official, the former President of the Dallas Federal Reserve, Richard W.
Fisher. Mr Fisher has stated this: “Add together the unfunded liabilities from Medicare and Social
Security, and it comes to $US 99.2 TRILLION over the infinite horizon.” If the funded and unfunded
liabilities of this financial organisation are added together, they come to $US 108.8 TRILLION! And
THIS organisation – the US Treasury – is the one which will bail out Fannie, Freddie et al?!?

  21. Turkey’s PM calls for censorship as well. Islamists simply fear that their supremacist ideology of hate is being exposed for what it is and want to end it, thus removing all western resistance.
“Enmity with Islam ‘crime against humanity,’” by Thomas Seibert for The National (UAE), September 17 (thanks to Jack):
ISTANBUL // In a sign of his simmering anger about what he sees as baseless accusations against Islam in the West, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Turkey’s prime minister, has called on the international community to declare the enmity against Islam a “crime against humanity”.

  22. The AGW Climate Fraud Bubble has exploded:
    Poof! It’s dead.
    >>>> “Al Gore’s carbon trading business GIM was banked with Lehman Bros.”

    …-
“Lehman Brothers Close Ties to Gore, Hansen and Carbon Trading
Al Gore’s carbon trading business GIM was banked with Lehman Bros. It will be interesting to see how this will play in the future but I suspect that this increases the risk of participating in Carbon trading. Merrill Lynch, was also deeply involved in this business.
Last year Lehman Brothers released a long and highly publicized report about climate change in which they preached about decarbonization, trying to make their investors keep getting high profits from the Kyoto carbon trade scheme and the support of huge public subventions. All that, of course, with the applause of the usual choir of politicians, the entire media and the Greens.
A year ago they couldn’t predict their bankruptcy but were predicting the climate 100 years ahead. Thousands of green militants have been using the Lehman report as a proof of global warming and impending chaos. Lehman Bros said it! sacred words! Its scientific advisor is James Hansen! The report is the basis for policies on climate change in Spain, Argentina and several other countries playing the progress game; it is used by economy professors playing the climatologists; by newspapers editorials, and even by a State Secretary: Lehman Bros, said it!”

  23. Speaking of keeping things real in this campaign it’s already too late judging what’s coming from Dion and Layton. Stephen Harper is the realist and anything he has promised you can bet it’s been well thought out.
Harper should get a bit of credit and respect for having a clue about Economics, he has degrees in that field.

  24. Sharia law comes to England with predictable results. How can the leftards continue to support this Islamic nuttery when lefties are supposedly on the side of “equality” and “women’s rights”?
    ——————–
Siddiqi said that in a recent inheritance dispute handled by the court in Nuneaton, the estate of a Midlands man was divided between three daughters and two sons.
The judges on the panel gave the sons twice as much as the daughters, in accordance with sharia. Had the family gone to a normal British court, the daughters would have got equal amounts.
In the six cases of domestic violence, Siddiqi said the judges ordered the husbands to take anger management classes and mentoring from community elders. There was no further punishment.

  25. Something else you won’t see in the vMSM. From 5 years ago:
The Bush administration today recommended the most significant regulatory overhaul in the housing finance industry since the savings and loan crisis a decade ago.
Under the plan, disclosed at a Congressional hearing today, a new agency would be created within the Treasury Department to assume supervision of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, the government-sponsored companies that are the two largest players in the mortgage lending industry.
The new agency would have the authority, which now rests with Congress, to set one of the two capital-reserve requirements for the companies. It would exercise authority over any new lines of business. And it would determine whether the two are adequately managing the risks of their ballooning portfolios.
The plan is an acknowledgment by the administration that oversight of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac — which together have issued more than $1.5 trillion in outstanding debt — is broken. A report by outside investigators in July concluded that Freddie Mac manipulated its accounting to mislead investors, and critics have said Fannie Mae does not adequately hedge against rising interest rates.
Among the groups denouncing the proposal today were the National Association of Home Builders and Congressional Democrats who fear that tighter regulation of the companies could sharply reduce their commitment to financing low-income and affordable housing.
”These two entities — Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac — are not facing any kind of financial crisis,” said Representative Barney Frank of Massachusetts, the ranking Democrat on the Financial Services Committee. ”The more people exaggerate these problems, the more pressure there is on these companies, the less we will see in terms of affordable housing.”
Representative Melvin L. Watt, Democrat of North Carolina, agreed.
”I don’t see much other than a shell game going on here, moving something from one agency to another and in the process weakening the bargaining power of poorer families and their ability to get affordable housing,” Mr. Watt said.

  26. If ANYONE believes there is no bias in the Canadian media, I invite you to watch the media questioning.
Tonda Maccharles( I think, doesn’t matter, Laflamme, Thompson, Giggles etc, all the same) of the Toronto Star just asked Harper a question.
I’d be surprised if anyone in the country missed the venom and dislike in her voice.
    Disgraceful and unprofessional.
5 minutes with a Canadian journalist would shake anyone’s faith in democracy.

  27. (Via CSP) McKiernan Charts Course Forward in Afghanistan
McKiernan said the effort in Afghanistan will require much more than just more troops… But he does need more troops. He will receive a Marine air/ground task force in November and the 10th Mountain Division’s 3rd Brigade Combat Team beginning in January.
“I’ve asked for more than that, but this is a good start,” McKiernan said…
The general said a valid requirement exists for another three brigade combat teams, and that he believes he will receive them if there is a political decision in the United States to divert units from Iraq to Afghanistan.
Though the counterinsurgency strategy in Afghanistan is valid, “the problem is we don’t have enough resources to do it with,” McKiernan said. He repeated that while some of those resources are military, governance and economic aid also are needed…

  28. As usual in Zeroland, confusion at the top while the lower orders regard any criticism of their messiah as a capital crime:
(Via CSP) Amir Taheri, Obama Objects
IN Monday’s Post, I discussed how Barack Obama, during his July trip, had asked Iraqi leaders not to finalize an agreement vital to the future of US forces in Iraq – and how the effect of such a delay would be to postpone the departure of the US from Iraq beyond the time Obama himself calls for…
In his statement on my Post article, Obama no longer talks of “withdrawal” but of “redeployment” and “drawdown” – which is exactly what is happening in Iraq now.
While I am encouraged by the senator’s evolution, I must also appeal to him to issue a “cease and desist” plea to the battalions of his sympathizers – who have been threatening me with death and worse in the days since my article appeared.

  29. Anne Applebaum, Willing to Win in Afghanistan?
And this, in a microcosm, is the dilemma we face in Afghanistan, well understood on the ground but occasionally worth restating for outsiders: Where there is a real military presence, it is possible to bring peace and development to Afghanistan. But where there are no foreign troops, there is often anarchy. Though European governments like to draw a line between bringing “security” and engaging in counter-terrorism in Afghanistan, on the ground those missions blur…

A growing body of evidence shows that criminal gang activities in the United States are taking on the characteristics of a domestic insurgency similar, in some ways, to the war going on in Mexico against drug gangs. There is also growing circumstantial evidence of mutual support between the more serious international gangs and state-sponsored terrorism that will soon pose a clear danger to American national security…

  31. Incredible logic.
The presidential race in the U.S. is close–ergo–it’s due to racism.
    Precise logic by Cafferty.
Unbelievable; I can see someone being a dem. supporter but this is leagues deeper than biased and comes close to insanity.
    To quote him:-
“Race is arguably the biggest issue in this election, and it’s one that nobody’s talking about.
The differences between Barack Obama and John McCain couldn’t be more well-defined. Obama wants to change Washington. McCain is a part of Washington and a part of the Bush legacy. Yet the polls remain close. Doesn’t make sense…unless it’s race.”

  35. Dion speaking today about child care funding which would provide funds under the Green Shift.
    He said it twice (CBC).
This is an amazing admission in my opinion, it validates the comments made earlier by a lib. MP Boshcoff (even though he retracted them later) “that the Green Shift is the “most aggressive anti-poverty program in 40 years,” which will target wealthy provinces — particularly Alberta.
He also said that the program would transfer wealth “from rich to poor, from the oilpatch to the rest of the country.”

I may be a few steps behind on this issue but it seems to me that this a huge admission that the “Shaft” IS now an admitted revenue raising scheme for social re-engineering plans at least to some extent.
Correct me if I am wrong but I think that admission by Dion is big news.

  36. Tony Halpin, President Medvedev threatens Russian Arctic annexation
Russia triggered a fresh scramble for the oil wealth of the Arctic today after President Dmitri Medvedev called on security chiefs to establish a formal border in the region.
Mr Medvedev laid claim to a vast tranche of the Arctic, telling his National Security Council that it had “strategic importance” for Russia. Estimates suggest that the polar region contains billions of tons of oil and gas reserves, which are increasingly accessible as global warming melts the ice cap…
Nikolai Patrushev, the director of the security council, said that Russia would defend its interests in the Arctic against rival claims from the United States, Canada, Norway and Denmark.

    By Michelle Malkin
Sometime early this morning, between approximately 3:00am – 4:00am, members of an infamous group of hackers broke into Gov. Sarah Palin’s private Yahoo e-mail account. The incriminating discussion threads included screenshots of Palin’s e-mail and private e-mail addresses of her contacts. The threads have since been deleted.
Hacking e-mail is a federal crime. A TV anchor who broke into his colleague’s e-mail account recently pleaded guilty and faces a maximum five years in prison.
The law will catch up to the hackers, but what about the lowlifes who are now gleefully splashing the alleged contents of Palin’s private e-mail account all over the Internet?
The Gawker smear machine — see here for all the background you need — has posted private family photos of Palin’s children that were apparently stolen from the e-mail account.
They have used Bristol Palin’s illegally obtained private cell phone number from her mom’s private account, recorded her voicemail message, and posted it on their website.”

  42. (Via Contentions) Ralph Peters, Why Putin should scare us
Far from being a Marxist, Putin belongs to a long tradition of aggressive Russian nationalists. A complex man, he’s cold-bloodedly pragmatic when planning — as both his rise to power and his preparations for the recent invasion of Georgia demonstrated — yet he’s imbued with a mystical sense of Russia’s destiny. The ambitious son of a doctrinaire communist father and a devout Orthodox mother, Putin’s straight from the novels of Feodor Dostoevski (another son of St. Petersburg)…
