Good evening ladies and gentlemen, welcome to SDA Late Nite Radio. Tonight, for your delectation and pursuant to our Wednesday night comedy show and Gunney99’s request for more rhythm and melody on SDA LNR, here are Allan Sherman, Dean Martin, and Vic Damone performing A Medley of Songs on the Dean Martin Show in 1965 (6:31).
Update: Pursuant to our previous footage, here at SDA LNR, of l’Hydroptère, the current fastest sailboat in the world (47.2 knots, 87.4 km/h), I have found some additional footage. While the former is more majestic and is a great overview, the latter, and I say this speaking as an old Tornado sailor, more accurately reflects the feel on the boat, in my opinion.
Your Reader Tips are, as always, welcome in the comments.

Re additional footage of l’Hydroptère: What a rush! Bonus upside – it’s nothing but exhilarating and positive, and it’s a fine example of what we as a species can achieve when we use everything we know to work together toward a common goal. My French isn’t great, but no matter – their naked glee when they hit top end required no interpretation. Stoked is a universal language.
Far better viewing for one’s mental health than the DNC, which, oddly, doesn’t quite fire a person up with the same compelling cellular-level desire to go out and do something cool in the world.
From the Daily Mail:
A Muslim-led local council has provoked fury by attempting to ban all members from eating during meetings throughout the fasting month of Ramadan.
Outraged politicians hit out after the shock move by Town Hall leaders to impose hardline Islamic rules on non-Muslim colleagues throughout the whole of September.
The storm was sparked by an email sent to all members of Tower Hamlets Council in east London highlighting arrangements for next month’s meeting.
The memo said that new council leader Lutfur Rahman and his deputy, Siraj Islam, had requested that meetings be kept to a minimum to accommodate fasting councillors.

Chilling News: “Sunspots May Vanish by 2015”
By William Livingston and Matthew Penn, National Solar Observatory, Tucson, AZ”
“Our data show that there are additional changes occurring in sunspots, independent of the sunspot cycle, and these trends suggest that sunspots will disappear completely. Such an event would not be unprecedented, since during a famous episode from 1645-1715, known as the Maunder Minimum, the normal 11-year periodicity vanished and there were virtually no sunspots visible on the solar surface (Eddy 1976). Recent studies of the appearance rate and latitudinal drift of sunspots (Hathaway et al., 2004) and of the solar magnetic field (Svalgard etal, 2005) predict that the number of sunspots visible in future cycles will be significantly reduced.”

“Muslim who helped Obama into Harvard recommends torturing white people”
Old videos appear to show a radical Muslim named Khalid Al-Mansour helped Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama gain acceptance into Harvard Law.
Civil rights activist Percy Sutton recalled being solicited by a man named Dr. Khalid A-Mansour to write a letter of recommendation to help Obama gain acceptance into Harvard Law.
In one of the videos, titled “Christians Designed Discrimination” uploaded by a YouTube user named IslamStudios, Al-Mansour said, “White people don’t feel bad, whatever you do to them, they deserve it, God wants you to do it and that’s when you cut out the nose, cut out the ears, take flesh out of their body, don’t worry because God wants you to do it.”

“Economy Grew 3.3% in 2nd Quarter
WASHINGTON — The U.S. economy was much stronger in the spring than first thought because of better exports and less inventory liquidation by businesses, according to a government report that surprised economists.
Gross domestic product rose at a seasonally adjusted 3.3% annual rate April through June, the Commerce Department said Thursday in a new, revised estimate of second-quarter GDP.
Originally, the government had estimated second-quarter 2008 GDP climbed 1.9%. First-quarter GDP increased 0.9%.”

Christians fasting during Lent do not ask everyone else to fast as well. What crybabies these infantile Islamofascists are. They’re so self-centred and fixated on their own importance as centres of the Universe that they think everyone else should fall in with their agenda, every where, all the time.

And, wouldn’t ya know it? The rally is held in Quebec, the province that has slurped the loudest, longest, and the most at the publicly funded government trough.

Could anyone give me a link to the study that shows the brilliance of the Canadian Wheat Board holding 4 million metric tonnes of wheat off the world market this past year when wheat prices were at some of the highest prices in modern history?
Actually ‘holding’ is not the right word.
The CWB is ‘hoarding’ western Canada’s wheat.
Ironically, federal Lieberal Wayne Easter recently criticized all nations hoarding grain as an unconscionable act which just deprives poor people of their daily food.
Care to check with the CWB Big Boy and lay the lumber on the CWB too for hoarding Canada’s grain?
Or is the CWB still in the pockets of Big Crooked Lieberals?

Remarkably, however, the wars that chiefly roil the Islamic world today are no longer at its periphery. They are at the center, and they pit Muslims against other Muslims…
Taking the long view, one might note that intra-Islamic feuding is as old as the religion itself. Of Muhammad’s immediate successors—the “righteous caliphs,” according to Sunni tradition—the first, Abu Bakr, may have been poisoned; the next three are all known to have been assassinated, with the murder of the third caliph (Othman) resulting in the schism from which the Shiite branch of Islam emerged. The Abassid revolt destroyed the Umayyad caliphate in the 8th century; the early 9th century was marked by civil war between the sons of the fifth Abassid caliph, Haroun al-Rashid…

Is national service the answer to youth crime? It may sound like a Daily Mail editorial but there could be more to the idea than disciplining errant teens
…With our prisons fit to burst, and the papers full of unending gang violence, the concept of sending teenagers off to square-bash and do assault courses for a year or two, to reset their moral compasses and keep them so busy they haven’t got the time or the energy to commit crime, has been floated quite seriously around the media and there seems more than usual willingness to consider it…
I’ve just come up with a term for the controversy over the tainted meats at Maple Leaf Foods: Lysteria Hysteria.
I read an article on the issue in the Globe this morning and they are still sticking with the story that 15 deaths have resulted from this contaminated meat, when in fact Health Canada has actually reduced the number of deaths attributable to meat from the MLF plant to 5.
Considering that listeria can be found even in household kitchens and that Canadians consume millions of pounds of processed meats every year with next to no ill health effects, I find the panic expressed over this issue, even by some conservatives in the blogosphere, to be overblown and annoying.

In my perplexed state of mind, I consulted a younger friend (who has some tattoos). It wasn’t long ago that tattoos were for Marines, sailors, and guys on Harley Davidsons. Now, women in graduate school doing dissertations on Elizabeth Gaskell are getting tattoos. What gives? “Well,” she said, “I guess it’s just a way to express your individuality. Everybody’s doing it.”
Individuality—and everybody’s doing it. Hum. That pretty much sounds like the ethos of middle-class culture since the 1960s. Blue jeans and tee shirts. The Rolling Stones. Punctuating conversation with emphatic expletives. It’s a wave that has been crashing onto the beach for a long time now. Everybody tossing off the horrible, oppressive conformities of bourgeois culture—together.
Mass non-conformity has always been a fantasy, of course. In fact, by my lights, it’s the great and abiding fantasy of my lifetime. And it’s a fascinating fantasy, one well worth contemplating in its latest, flesh-altering form…

charles krautmanner has a nice column in the Washington Post on the Russian agenda in Georgia.
August 22nd.
He writes: “Russia’s aims are clear: (1) sever South Ossetia and Abkhazia from Georgia for incorporation into Russia; (2) bring down Georgia’s pro-Western government; and (3) intimidate Eastern European countries into reentering the Russian sphere of influence.
Objective No. 1 is already achieved. Georgia will never recover its provinces. They will soon be absorbed into Russia.
Objective No. 3 has backfired, for now. The Eastern Europeans have rallied to Georgia — and to the United States.
Objective No. 2 remains in the balance. Russian tanks have cut Georgia in half. Its largest port has been ransacked. Its capital is isolated. Russia shows every sign of staying in place by maintaining checkpoints and ultimate control.
If conditions continue, Georgia will be strangled and President Mikheil Saakashvili will fall, to be replaced by a docile client whom Russia will offer to deal with magnanimously. Moscow will have demonstrated its capacity to destroy a neighboring pro-Western regime without full-scale invasion or occupation and with zero resistance from NATO. Eastern European leaders will observe this outcome with shock, rethink their reflexive move toward the West and, in time, begin to accommodate themselves to Russian ambitions. Every Russian objective will have been achieved.”
ET, there is a similar piece in the Financial Times:
Mikheil Saakashvili, Moscow’s plan is to redraw the map of Europe
This war was never about South Ossetia or Georgia. Moscow is using its invasion, prepared over years, to rebuild its empire, seize greater control of Europe’s energy supplies and punish those who believed democracy could flourish on its borders. Europe has reason to worry. Thankfully, most of the international community has condemned the invasion and confirmed their unwavering support for Georgia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty…
The next step in Russia’s invasion script, of disinformation and annexation, is regime change. If Moscow can oust Georgia’s democratically elected government, it can then intimidate other democratic European governments. Where will this end? What we know about Russia, and especially the current regime, is not encouraging…
charles macdonald – right, Krauthammer’s August 14th column says that and adds:
“Subduing Georgia has an additional effect. It warns Russia’s former Baltic and East European satellites what happens if you get too close to the West. It is the first step to reestablishing Russian hegemony in the region.
What is to be done? Let’s be real. There’s nothing to be done militarily. What we can do is alter Putin’s cost-benefit calculations.
We are not without resources. There are a range of measures to be deployed if Russia does not live up to its cease-fire commitments:
1. Suspend the NATO-Russia Council established in 2002 to help bring Russia closer to the West. Make clear that dissolution will follow suspension. The council gives Russia a seat at the NATO table. Message: Invading neighboring democracies forfeits the seat.
2. Bar Russian entry to the World Trade Organization.
3. Dissolve the G-8. Putin’s dictatorship long made Russia’s presence in this group of industrial democracies a farce, but no one wanted to upset the bear by expelling it. No need to. The seven democracies simply withdraw. (And if Italy’s Silvio Berlusconi, who has been sympathetic to Putin’s Georgia adventure, wants to stay, he can have an annual G-2 dinner with Putin.) Then immediately announce the reconstitution of the original G-7.
4. Announce a U.S.-European boycott of the 2014 Winter Olympics at Sochi. To do otherwise would be obscene. Sochi is 15 miles from Abkhazia, the other Georgian province just invaded by Russia. The Games will become a riveting contest between the Russian, Belarusan and Jamaican bobsled teams. ”

“Elections Canada allowance was driving Liberal Party election plans
The Liberal Party under Stephane Dion wants to fight an election, or so they say, but later this fall. Apparently kicking off an election now, in September, is a bad thing.
A good thing would be kicking off an election in October.
Why? Really, what difference would it make?
In either case, Stephane Dion would still have to face a leadership review in December, either as the new prime minister or as the loser of a general election, so from that point of view, there really isn’t a difference.
Then it struck me that, for the Liberals, there is one big difference in starting an election in October. All federal parties that meet the criteria get their next Elections Canada quarterly allowance in October. The way the Liberals have been complaining about starting an election now instead of just a few weeks from now tells me that the Liberals need that money, and desperately.
Until that cheque arrived, Stephen Harper was going to get a free ride from the Liberals.
I think we ought to have an election now. Having the proper functioning of parliament (which includes an effective opposition) short-circuited by a broke political party that lurches from quarter to quarter on the back of taxpayers is just wrong.”

Just heard on the CBC in their news break (CBC Toronto, and this is a slight paraphrase):
And more on hurricane Gustav, whose track is heading for New Orleans.
1. Right now it’s tropical storm Gustav.
2. It’s 5 days away, if the models are to be believed, from landfall. The uncertainty on the track is huge at this point. And the centre of the track “cone” isn’t even on NO.
To say it’s a hurricane right now and to pinpoint its landfall location is nothing short of media hyperbole. They’re trying to cause panic. Speed up that asteroid, losers.
