On a serious note, the US presidential election is taking on a real “soldiers in your cities” feel to it. When people start spoofing your candidate and their positions, there’s real trouble in your campaign.
If Obama rises from the floor this evening as I’ve heard he will, this election is over. Republicans will benefit more from that image during the rest of the campaign from the average voter, than the Democrats will from their partisan crowd tonight.
Intrade says otherwise. McCain just lost Colorado and Nevada.

We’re in the middle of the DNC; of course there’s going to be a bump. Gallup poll today shows Obama at 48%, McCain at 42%.
The question is whether this will hold, which I doubt.

It is telling how you attack the arguer instead of the argument. Very weak form, just so you know. It is called an ad hminem attack byu those who know.
I’m sensing a backlash may develop in the near future. A CNN anchor referred to Michelle Obama as ” First Lady” this morning. She corrected herself, but not convincingly. Using pillars and other backdrops is going to really annoy a lot of conservative voters. That could result in a bigger turnout on election day.
John Kerry was overconfident in ’04, and look how well that worked out. In the end, he had issues that just couldn’t be overlooked. Obama has more charisma than Kerry, but his record is actually worse. Once it comes down to betting their future on one or the other, a lot of Americans will play it safe and avoid change.
I’m kind of inclined to think Obama may well pull this off, too.
It’s not because he deserves to. He doesn’t.
It’s not because he ran a great campaign.
He didn’t.
It’s because it’s the Dems’ year and most voters just aren’t that interested in researching the issues. And they just don’t care. They vote on soundbites.
So, if the electorate is smart, they’ll go with McCain, who does deserve to win simply based on experience and actual thought given to his platform (forget whether it’s even right or not). If people aren’t voting on substance, though, he’ll lose.
McCain can turn it around, and I hope he does. He has a very good chance, and I’m more optimistic now than I have been in a long time. But just because we know how bad a candidate Obama is doesn’t mean the rest of America will see it.
I don’t know, from what I have seen, the hard core Democrats like Obama and everything he does. The hard core Republicans agree that everything he does is stupid. But what do the rest of the people think? Are they even paying attention? I am willing to bet that the last episode of the Bionic Woman had more viewers than this convention. Filter out the political junkies, and you are probably down to not that many people actually paying attention.
He could probably pull a Madonna, and be brought out on a cross, and not that many normal people would care.
said it before will say it again. the average voter (human, person, individual, etc.) lack critical analysis skills. they are as dumb as a bag of rocks. hype will be absorbed and it will be good.
Kevin – My sentiments exactly. The DNC (RNC also) is just a pile of empty rhetoric that only the already-converted pay any attention to. There’s an American Idol type of commentary on the quality of the speeches. In a couple of weeks it’ll all be forgotten.

“Obama is a three-year senator without a single important legislative achievement to his name, a former Illinois state senator who voted “present” nearly 130 times. As president of the Harvard Law Review, as law professor and as legislator, has he ever produced a single notable piece of scholarship? Written a single memorable article? His most memorable work is a biography of his favorite subject: himself.
It is a subject upon which he can dilate effortlessly. In his victory speech upon winning the nomination, Obama declared it a great turning point in history — “generations from now we will be able to look back and tell our children that this was the moment” — when, among other wonders, “the rise of the oceans began to slow.” As Hudson Institute economist Irwin Stelzer noted in his London Daily Telegraph column, “Moses made the waters recede, but he had help.” Obama apparently works alone.

The American people take care to separate Hollywood and politics. Hollywood may not do this, but non-Hollywood Americans don’t mix the two. So, I have hope that the everyday American won’t fall for the Obama show.

Really, dp? Would pillars really piss conservatives? They didn’t mind a bit when George W. Bush used the USS Abraham Lincoln’s flight deck as a backdrop, and for an announcement that has proven to have been just a wee bit premature. If Obama’s rhetoric can be criticized as too grandiose, that of Bush seems to suffer from a more profound problem, an excessive economy as regards the truth.

Christoph @ 3.10. I don’t think he was a megalomaniac, he has become one since the gushing resoponse to his speech at some Democrat convention a couple of years ago.
I feel pretty sure that his ego is really rubbing people up internally, but they will stick with it to get into power. It’s when he starts screwing things up, you’ll see a lot of people leaving the ship. By screwing up, I mean ignoring basic common sense on political issues, not taking bold but risky steps that fail; just being an egocentric fool that thinks his mere presence and laying on of the hands can solve problems. After all, he is the chosen one.

Worth a read and seems to me to point at the reason the polls so often are so wrong. With the media in the tank for the one, he should have a 10 point lead in all the polls. Kerry did at this point 4 years ago and Bush43 won on his record and dedication. I don’t see either in Obama, but I do see them in McCain. There can’t be much left for the media to throw at John but there’s still lots of room under Baracks bus.

I would like to suggest that you research the ‘affliction’ described as ‘groupthink’. When almost all of the arguments you hear reflect and reenforce your own views it becomes difficult to even imagine that an opposing POV could have some truth to it.
Politics is an adversarial affair, add to that the anonymity of the blogosphere and bunkered mentalities and it creates an air where no one ever concede the other side ANY point.(though I must say I see cons as considerably more able to criticize their own than the left.)
Anyways, I really wanted to comment about the Clinton’s speeches.I could not quite figure out why both speeches made me feel quite uneasy.
Then I realized that it was the sheer force with which they were both delivered that betrayed the insincerety of them. Waaaay over the top.

No, Exetaz, it’s just Christoph. After a time, or a few times anyway, one learns to mouse-wheel past the noise, slowing only when a signal appears to come in range. That’s why, when reading blog comments, one of these here new-fangled heavy brass inertial-mass mouse wheels I’ve got is so useful: once you start it spinning it really saves a lot of wear and tear on your middle finder (which is important considering said finger’s other uses).

But I wanted to say that shouting “ad hominem” isn’t always appropriate. Ad hominem is a fallacious form of argument, responding to a point by attacking the person who made it. If you refuse even to consider a point because of who made it, that, strictly speaking, is not ad hominem, since you aren’t purporting to argue; you are declining to argue. And you’re under no obligation to argue or even speak with dishonest or offensive people. Of course, you can’t claim to have won the argument, having walked away from it, but that can be an acceptable trade-off.
Similarly, if the argument being advanced is the comparably fallacious argument from authority, it is not ad hominem to attack the supposed authority. We had an example some weeks ago when John Cross, one of the intermittent moonbats that attack this site, attempted to justify his global warmening beliefs by referring to one Tim Lambert. His interlocutor proceeded to blackguard Tim Lambert in no uncertain terms, and John screamed “ad hominem”, for which I took him to task. If someone invites you take a liar’s word for it, it’s entirely correct to point out that it’s a liar’s word, and the more energetically you can make him out as a liar, the more fun you’ll have.
And finally, if you actually address the argument, then however much abuse you then heap on your opponent, that’s not ad hominem, it’s just good clean fun, and at its best, healthy exercise.
