  1. They need to invent a “dark” panel that generates electricity from darkness, then we can run our air conditioners and beer fridges at night too. The daylight running at full power barely makes up for the hours of darkness so you are never ahead. Who gets to wash the panels on a regular basis so that the dust and bird poop don’t block the precious rays of sunshine? Hope they don’t get much for winds as the windblown dust can etch the panels and reduce their efficiency. What kind of reflection comes off the panels and could it be an aviation hazard? Do they get lightning in that area, as that could fry a lot of panels real fast.
Burning wood, oil and natural gas seems such a natural thing to do and its cheap (relatively). The kw hour cost for solar panels is an order of magnitude greater than hydro, coal, oil or natural gas generation of electricity. Maybe covering such a large area with solar panels will affect the world in ways similar to logging large areas of forest, upset the ecosystem somehow.
    mid island mike.

  2. So, California is building an 800 megawatt photo-voltaic plant that has peak production in the middle of the day when they also have peak demand!
Finally, they’ve figured out they live in a semi-desert area.
I bet they won’t need a nuclear plant SWAT team to protect it from being taken hostage by terrorists.
Now the EU has elevated blood pressure from realizing how politically and economically dependent they are on Russian oil and gas. They’ll too will invest more in renewable energy. Whatever, the cost. It will look less expensive than a Cold War re-armament budget.
Saskatchewan’s electrical power generating mix with a photo-voltaic plant might not need a 10-15 year wait for an upteen billion dollar nuclear boondoggle.
Peak electrical demand might turn out to be daytime when people have their electric E-Volt GM cars and E-Volt GM half-tons parked recharging while they are at work? Who will miss that weekly $50-$100 deposit at the local gas station?
The same invested in a home roof photo-voltaic system, if it buys energy independence, would be damned attractive.
It might be a little optimistic but I’m tired of seeing Mid-East dictatorships and a re-newed Russian dictatorship bully the rest of the world with oil money. Democracy’s survival may depend on a significant reduction on the demand for oil?

  3. Was that trial and error journalism at the Times? How many hands did that copy go through before they decided to print it?

… when the Gray Lady is laid to rest.”
    Cherniak, probably.

  5. Considering the NYT thinks that the sun rises because they deem it to be so and they are on the east coast, they should have at least gotten that one right.

  6. or:
    Boring/troubled/lonely life at RedTory?
    (note time stamp)
I never visit blogs I dislike, let alone at 2 in the morning.
The other side’s habit of constantly checking out right wing blogs and posting about our every burp and fart says a lot more about them than it does about us.

  7. I’m laughing so hard, tears are in my eyes.
The rest of the newsroom wishes I would quiet down.
Well, at least it was not north-south

  8. Liberal bloggers get lonely and bored. And not just for the reasons you would naturally think.
Very few allow comments (big surprise), and the ones that do censor all but the usual fart catchers.
But we really should be encouraging these brave incursions. After all, that type of inbreeding has led directly to the arrogant, mean-spirited, dishonest shell of a political party that the present day Liberal Party has become.
Heck, if you compiled a list of all Conservatives who became Liberals, kept Conservative monikers, and regularly resign yet again from the Conservative Party, you might have enough people to fill an 8 man crew row boat. In that particular scenario, lifejackets are highly recommended!

  9. Man, was picking us some family in the big city of S’Port Sunday Morning and low and behold there was a NYT Sunday Paper at the stand, nice crisp and thick. My nephew noticed me eyeing it and bought it, as we were loading up I non-chalantly threw the NYT in my toolbox in the back of the truck. My nephew quickly comments I thought you wanted to read that on the way home. Nope said I, my birdcage needs a new bed-lining.

  10. Ah, I finally understand why Lefties give me an argument when I say the sun rises in the East and sets in the West.
“Phantom, you JERK! Says west to east in the New York Times, its gotta be true!”

  11. Larry, whatever rated number of electricity they throw at you, you’ll find that they’ll only get about 17% of that rated capacity out of it. That’s true of all solar and wind generated electricity. The rated capacity is when the star align correctly, and there’s source of whatever you’re trying to harness. Problem is, nature for the most part will not cooperate with your design.
This is great for getting that extra bit of juice into the grid, but not for primary generator. For that, you fall back to the old reliable: coal, natural gas turbine, diesel, and of course, nuclear.

  12. Doesn’t the direction of rotation depend whether the reporter was looking at the panel from above or below?

  13. Environmentalists have put the kibosh on many solar projects in my area. The main reason for objection is usually the death of birds caused by the whirling blades, noise and unsightliness. You can be assured that some light-loving species, an “endangered” plant or titmouse, will be disadvantaged by large areas shaded by solar panels. It will likely be years before the court challenges will be sorted out.

  14. Bats also are very susceptable to being chopped by windmills.
mo’ windmills, mo’ bugs, mo’ west nile.
we need mo’ obama to save us.

  15. ‘She’ might be grey but ‘she’ is no lady! Poetic licence? I more inclined to use ‘dirty old man’ as a metaphor for this one.

  16. ural
The MSM don’t hire reporters for their technical expertise, they hire people for their frame of reference in which they manage to confuse “right and wrong” why not “east and west”?

  17. glasnost said: “The MSM don’t hire reporters for their technical expertise, they hire people for their frame of reference in which they manage to confuse “right and wrong” why not “east and west”?”
I thought they got hired because they were someone the editor or publisher slept with, wanted to sleep with, or might be the children of someone they slept with…

  18. proof reading? as for it being a slow news day, well, i did not have one single ad for male enhancement today. it must be slow for everyone.

  19. Kathy Shaidle : ” …posting about our every burp and fart… ” You mean ladies fart???

  20. Clockwise, counterclockwise!
Left to right or right to left,
Upside own or right side up,
In and out and out and in,
Good luck, bad luck, or no luck.
    Win, lose or draw.
    Some days life sucks,
And no one seems to give a F*&?

  21. Larry –Who will miss that weekly $50-$100 deposit at the local gas station?
So if we all go solar it will be free or cheaper, why do you assume that?
“Each solution carries its own problems”

  22. Paraphrasing from “Robinhood, men in tights”: What are you doing, Blinkin? Guessing.
